    To me “weird Nintendo” died with the failure of the Wii U. They saw that being the wacky kids console gimmick couldn’t keep putting up numbers and you see that switch in philosophy with the switch era

      "Weird Nintendo" died with the Wii. The motion control gimmick isn't "weird" but rather a bad gameplay decision many people disliked but still sold more than it really should have.
      People are suckers, and much like the Final Fantasy 7 community, they will buy anything that has a specific logo slapped onto it even if it's clearly a bad idea. Makes me wonder how many of them have buyers remorse when the things they bought stop getting supported.

    This was the era where I stopped being a "fanboy" and learned to be critical of the businesses I support. Of course I have fond memories of the Wii U era as it was my college years, with games like Smash, Rayman Legends, Splatoon, COD, etc but we all know the U wasn't a great era overall and sold badly. The Switch succeeded because the U failed. It was certainly an era that won't be forgotten. I was honestly of course critical of Nintendo's business practices but was deeply hurt by Iwata's passing and I wish he was still here with us. But he's playing his games in the sky. Rest easy, Iwata-san.

      @mrm64 For the vast majority if things, the switch era is an improvement for sure. Nintendo business wise during this time was a disaster. But I too will always have fond memories of this wii u era!
      Also although I think the switch has on average better games, it says alot about the quality of wii u games that so many of them have been either ported to switch, or been built upon for switch games like splatoon 2 or ultimate. Wii U is quite underrated in that sense.

      Basically, he was against Nintendo Switch Online’s paid subscription feature. Some gamers feel tied down to having to pay over and over instead of keeping the games they purchased. Why didn’t they just make a Nintendo Switch Virtual Console where you still have ALL the games you want, but you pay ONCE. Nintendo would still get the money from the big purchases, and they’re not exactly STRUGGLING for cash at the moment, so…

    It's easy to wish for the past because we forget about the strain we had to deal with. This video really opened my eyes in seeing that Masahiro Sakurai (greatest artist of the modern age) really kept that tradition alive even after Iwata and Reggie were gone. His style of presentation is one I try to mirror in my own videos.

      @jedisquidward Sakurai is a great personality to model your own videos on! He really captures that charm and fun whilst also making his presentations engaging and valuable to watch.
      When I see people say that Nintendo can't have that same heart and fun that they once had because now the switch is popular and is aimed at a wider audience, I look to Sakurai who is very much still reminiscent of the old way whilst promoting the most successful fighting game of all time. So if he can do it, I don't see why the rest of Nintendo can't in this modern era of success. (Granted, Sakurai is really one of a kind.)

    Hot take: Metroid Prime Federation Force is a great game. It's just that it was being released under these three circumstances:
    1. The last Metroid game was Other M
    2. The franchise had a 6 years hiatus
    3. Nintendo had just DMCA'd AM2R by DrM64
    If Nintendo released Samus Returns in 2016 and Federation Force in 2017 it would've been received so much better
    Heck, if Nintendo even announced Samus Returns alongside Federation Force people wouldn't be complaining about this game

    • @StarLeo_
      @StarLeo_  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @ddnava96 That's a good point. The timing likely mean alot since it was during the time where fans were starving for not only metroid content but just big nintendo games in general, so to release it then backfired .

      4. They tried putting a FPS on 3DS with bad controls.
      5. They ignored people who wanted a new Metroid on Wii U/ Didn't put this on Wii U instead.
      Federation Force wouldn't have been received better if it was after Samus Returns unless it came out on Wii U, but even then people were more upset they didn't support the Wii U much at all.

    • @ddnava96
      @ddnava96 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Fayt540 It had as good controls as they could add on a 3DS. That said, it is compatible with the Circle Pad Pro and the N3DS nub for better controls. Tbh I only played it on N3DS so I can't speak for controls on the O3DS without the CPP.
      As for the WiiU support, I honestly don't blame them, as it's a mainly multiplayer game consisting of short missions. They had to choose between the highly successful 3DS with its multiplayer focus or arguably the second biggest failure among Nintendo consoles

    The only Nintendo systems I had experienced prior to 2011 were the SNES, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, GameCube, DS Lite, and the original Wii. My dad bought me the original N3DS around the end of 2011 when the system got a price cut.
    I was a fan of Nintendo, just from that system alone and while I never got a Wii U when it was still the company's focus (even though, I really wanted one to show support), I was always rooting for its success because it was the only home console from the 8th Gen that actually excited me.
    Looking back on that era, yeah it's very easy to say that this was the company's dark days, but honestly the community and the bigwigs at Nintendo made the best of things, during that time and for me, that's why I still hold that generation in high regard.
    Heck, I literally made a playlist on my channel that contain my favorite fan videos on TH-cam that were made from 2011 to early 2017 and years later, I still have no problem going back on that playlist from time-to-time.
    While it wasn't Nintendo's best generation, it was a definitely special one though.
    While I still like the Switch, I'm not a fan of the company anymore and I'm not going to list my reasons why because this comment is already long enough, but still.

    I think that this video is very dismissive of what the current leaders at Nintendo can do and have done, sure it's different, but the fact that they have helped Nintendo reach heights probably Reggie and Iwata couldn't do is an accomplishment on it's own. Appreciate what the leaders at Nintendo have done for us, this is the best Nintendo generation we've had. Nintendo is actually listening to us, WII U had droughts and hardly no first-party games, no Animal Crossing, no Warioware, no Zelda game, no Metroid, no 3 Mario parties, honestly. Sure the WII U was a better console but the Switch has a better library and a much more versatile way to play your games. I'd prefer a bigger library and a hybrid console over a home console with hardly any games, hell Even Mario Tennis Aces is better than Mario Tennis Ultra Smash (pass) I feel like fans complained about Super Mario 3d World being too linear, but when Nintendo gives us an actual sandbox game, now all of a sudden, people actually like 3d world more, same for wonder, people complained about how the new super Mario bros series was stale and wanted something different but when we get something different, we complain. Nintendo Switch is one of the best Nintendo generations of all time and it's sad people aren't appreciating what Nintendo gave us. They will only miss it when the next console is released, just like the WII U was finally appreciated after the switch came out. This was a slap in the face to the modern Nintendo, you fans are so entitled and unappreciative. The fact that the Switch is still selling with hardly any apps is impressive in itself. A video game console isn't known for its apps but for its games and it shows. Nobody was watching TV or on the internet when the SNES or the N64 came out and the GameCube, yet they say they are some of Nintendo's best, why can't Switch get the same recognition. Nintendo is still Nintendo to me, it's only going to change once Miyamoto is dead, then that's when you all need to start to worry. He is the real face of Nintendo, not Iwata or Reggie. Miyamoto started the Nintendo craze and it will die with him.

      @thewiseone629 The Nintendo switch with its library of games is the best thing Nintendo has ever done. Maybe even the best machine in gaming with how many masterpieces are on it. I made sure in this video to say that the new leaders are still very much respected and competent, as evident by the success of the switch. The video only compares the aspect of how personable they are and how engaging they are with the audience, which is undeniably at a much lesser level nowadays. This was not meant to be a knock on the quality of modern Nintendo, just an opportunity to reminesce some quality experiences and approaches that are no longer part of this newer more successful Nintendo.

    What changed Nintendo was their business ideologies. Nintendo used to innovate creative ideas that changed the way people game, they didn’t just live off their own hype but they also used to come up with new ways to generate it. Modern Nintendo live off the hype created by old Nintendo.

      Yup. Closest thing they had to hype in modern times were Smash announcements for highly requested characters, and I'm fairly certain it was mainly due to Etika's positive energy.. when he was around. RIP.

      @@BareBandSubscription Revived? You mean the Super Mario RPG remake by Microsoft Office, the Paper Mario game that runs better on the Gamecube than the Switch, and now Brothership which may or may not be good since it's not out and we don't know what it's going to entail?
      Did they also "revive" F-Zero when they brought F-Zero 99? I know what I'm saying sounds dark, but it's the reality we're living in. Compare the SNES version of Super Mario RPG and tell me the Switch version doesn't look lifeless by comparison.

      I’m sorry, are two dream remakes that nobody thought would ever happen as well as a new M&L entry after like ten years not good enough for you? My bad, dawg. Didn’t realize you were so hard to please.
      Also, as a diehard fan of Mario RPG for SNES since childhood, I thought the Switch game looked basically perfect, played great, and had great new content I still go back to. It nailed the look of like 99% of the original renders from all the promotional material I’d see growing up. It’s also just a better game than the original (which does not hold up visually at all unless it’s being played on a CRT, btw). As a fan of that game, you’re wrong. Empty cynicism isn’t high taste.

    Idk about Wii U, but my favorite experiences were on the Gamecube. If I were to compare:
    Sunshine vs Odyssey - They're Mario games, but I didn't really get into them and played them equally as little.
    WW and TP vs BotW and TotK - These Zelda games feel even to me. I enjoy them all, though TotK does feel like BotW but just more, while TP is completely different from WW.
    Kirby Air Ride vs Forgotten Kingdom - Kirby Air Ride without a doubt. This experience hasn't come back since, and the closest thing we got to it was Smash Run on Smash for 3DS.
    Colosseum and XD vs Sw/Sh and S/V - Hahaha... yeah Colosseum hands down. Pokemon games on Switch are buggy and not worth full price.
    F-Zero GX vs F-Zero 99 - ...Really? F-Zero GX. Baffles me that they really can't seem to bring more to do with F-Zero other than a battle royale.
    Not going to give Switch praise for sharing the Steam library but at much poorer capability. Sales numbers also do not depict whether a game or console is good or successful since scalpers exist and we can have better experiences elsewhere.

      The Gamecube was honestly balls compared to the Switch. I was a Gamecube kid and even I thought it was generally underwhelming. The prevalent amount of backtracking and padding in a lot of the first party stuff was evident, and the third party support was lousy compared to PS2 and Xbox. I think people have really overhyped the GameCube lately. It was arguably the least inspired piece of hardware Nintendo ever put out and the library wasn’t even really as experimental as people make it out to be now (“make new franchise entry but add water” isn’t terribly creative, nor is “turn original IP into Star Fox”). The Switch has actively done things I never thought would happen, from dream pick Smash characters, to the Mario RPG revival, to out-of-left-field stuff like Deadly Premonition 2 (not a great game, but one that was surely NEVER going to get greenlit otherwise) and new localizations of stuff like Radical Dreamers, AAI2, etc, like I really don’t get how anyone’s down on the Switch. The thing has delivered.

      @@BareBandSubscription I think the gamecube by itself wasn't much of a thing design-wise due to not having the ability to play DVDs like the others, but the controller design and the games were seen in a much better light once people gave it a chance.
      I could see Switch getting praise for being a system that was just underwhelming for what it did, that it could have had better hardware, but the ability to "switch" between portable and home display setups was always a good idea. Sadly, I think people will remember the Switch for the buggy, unplayable versions of games that were put on the console. That it had a few good titles that were interesting, like Smash Ultimate, Odyssey, and BotW, and the ability to run Witcher 3 despite looking much worse, but that it really started to fall off after that due to poor business decisions, lack of VC support, poor online play that you had to pay for, and many more negatives.
      Much worse than the Gamecube looking like a lunchbox.

      That’s a pretty odd thing to believe when the Switch has had a much more commercially and critically successful lifecycle than the GameCube had. Like, I don’t get how you think the Switch is gonna suddenly get less popular overtime and not enjoy a nostalgic renaissance like the GameCube and Wii currently are, but okay. Plus my point about the first-party output being riddled with padding still stands, as do my points about the crummy third-party support and superficial experimentation.

    • @Fayt540
      @Fayt540 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@BareBandSubscription Yeah idk why people want remakes of Gamecube games, why Melee lasted so much longer than others, and why people want Gamecube controller support.
      I ignored your padding comment because you really don't see the padding in Switch titles. I would point out Switch games being buggier than Gamecube, and while Gamecube had its own faulty games, it was still early in the 3D span alongside N64. Nintendo has had Wii, Wii U, and now Switch to stop screwing around... yet here we are.
      Third party support on a Nintendo console just means "Hey, we got those games you can get on Steam, except they run worse on our consoles."
      And superficial experimentation isn't just a Gamecube exclusive. Ninty sells overpriced SD cards and other products (that should be labeled "Early Access", btw) for waaay more than they deserve just because it has their logo on it. If you're falling for that, I wouldn't be surprised if you prefer iOS over Android.

    Tbf I think the current Nintendo Direct approach being so rapid fire feels like that it's a byproduct of them inserting all of these 3rd party titles including the dime a dozen JRPGs they seemingly waste too much time on.
    At the very least from a game development standpoint, remakes for Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario TTYD is a level of fan service that none of us expected would ever happen.
