You explained this on a very funny way! I never understood why corporates think more original ideas and characters were bad, like if f*cking Koops from Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door scared people and made them not wanna buy games.

@@nicholastricarico2957 Yeah that’s true, I don’t dislike the New Sup Games nor the concept of a certain piece of media been made “to pay the bills”, because at the end of the the day, is your job too, but I think when it’s on something exterior from you, limiting it feels weird. Like, Miyamoto can do everything as he wants on games where he is the head, but feels odd from one generation to the other, he decided to limit the creation of spin off characters. That could be related to protection of his creation, but with how big the Mario franchise is, it feels like trying to contain something enormous on something tiny. Also, I think this isn’t fully a Miyamoto thing, because it feels more of a corporate decision to make the brand recognizable, which is kinda what my comment was going for. I think this is primarily done when barriers where over passed like how the video talks about it, when they give to much liberty like on Hotel Mario, the OG movie, Super Paper Mario (those don’t look as Mario, and some not even as atractive characters in my opinion), etc. so then waters kinda cool down, and they can give that type of liberty again. Sorry for the unnecessarily long comment.
It boils down to more original ideas being riskier than reusing things people have already shown themselves to enjoy. That's also why the movie industry has made so many more adaptations, remakes, and sequels rather than original characters in the past few years. Nothing specific to Nintendo, just business.
To be honest when you brought up Super Mario Maker, I was expecting you to bring up the troll level community and turn it into a tale of "the fans of weird mario helped to realize mario's weird dreams"! Teamwork makes the dream work and all
Nice vid but seriously i am the only one that is surprised that he didn't talked about Super Mario Land 1 and especially 2? Like those games are on the same boat as SMB2 USA: They were weird but they aren't bad (SML2 is on my top 10) but for some reason Nintendo keeps ignoring those games
Mario land was very briefly considered for a segment but after writing over 20 pages of the videos script it became clear that I couldn’t talk about absolutely everything other cuts included: Mario is missing, Mario’s time machine and I am a teacher: Mario sweater as well as other sections getting significantly cut down like Mario Strikers and DDR Mario Mix. And even after all the cuts the video was still 50 minutes long.
Let’s just ignore the fact that The two Mario and Luigi remakes lead to the bankruptcy of the series devs effectively murdering the sub-series for 5 years, 9 if you’re strictly talking about new entries
For a character that's a stand in for the player, Mario has gone through many of caricatures. It's not as bad as say Sonic the Hedgehog, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, but it was certainly close. And being the gaming version of Mickey Mouse, the brand still needs to be authentic while also being experimental, so it ends up being this impossible grey area between identity crisis and a set direction. And both Super Mario Odyssey, Mario & Rabbids, and later Super Mario Bros. Wonder are what broke that mold, depending on who you ask did it better.
One of the best parts about the Mario Renaissance is that it's given people a reason to look back on games that never got a chance (ie Paper Mario: Color Splash) and see what they missed out on before
To be Fair, Mario party 9 wasn’t Miyamoto Fault at all, the last Mario party (DS) and predecessors were made by de company Hudson Soft but then it dissolved leaving it to ND cube (part of Nintendo) and the rest is history. @dunkleosteusterrelli especially how bubble mario came from new super mario world. It released in 2018. Years before Super Marip Bros. Wonder entered development. Damn
In this plot, it's because Miyamoto wanted to continue playing it extremely safe and wanted to use the movie as a way to show the worst of what creativity/non-standard choices could do
I remember watching the Super Mario Super Show everyday as a kid I loved it so much which was funny considering I had never played a Mario game before and it was like 2016. 10/10 show, go watch it.
While Mario may never completely return to the type of weirdness that he once been like in hotel mario, he unintentionally manifested an entity that branched off from officoialality who in itself is an entity of chaos and media that while is currently holding on to a branch of relativity, still leaves his marks when used properly. This being is one that Miyamoto cannot restrict or control himself truly, but is one fans of mario could potentially shape and multiply. We have seen this being several times throughout this video, and to top it all off, vastly resembles Mario’s brother Luigi. The entity in question… Weegee.
Good video. I enjoyed this take. Personally, I like characters to be consistent. Sure, put him in different costumes here and there, different settings, keep it fresh. I would really like a 2D game in the style of early 90s box art Mario though. Those illustrations are what the real OG Mario looks like for me. So, that... with the same kind of approach as Cuphead for the animations.
I know I'm on the wrong side of history but I loved the New Super Mario Bros games. In the present I agree with what everyone says, that they were "safe" and "standardized", and New Super Mario Bros 2 was definitely my least favorite because it did nothing, but I really liked them. Not sure how I feel about the latest games yet, but also not nearly familiar with them
alot NES games _are_ difficult but they still follow basic game principles and aren't just Little Timmy levels except Little Timmy was multiple timmies and they were grown up SMB2JP is legit just a bunch of levels stitched together that the devs made for fun and decided to actually publish like some of the levels in the game, publishing that in the US would've been... a leap of faith and it would've likely done bad
this is a perfect video because its not just the basic history of Mario as a franchise, but makes the claim that Mario games we're weird at the start but he gets standardized over time. Bravo
