They focused so much on online play that they forgot about the sports themselves, the other modes for the sports and the cpus that made the sports more lively. It’s honestly a shame
They focused so much on online play that they forgot some people (everyone) don’t want to play this game for the online, but for the fun of it, and the online should’ve been the only thing they gave it as dlc, and it should’ve had it by the end of the release month, so it actually got to be a good game with success

@@anonymouslucario285 a bit of a dramatic read, but it stems from realizing Wii Sports as a brand ended with this game. Switch Sports is almost guaranteed to be forgotten, and Miis playing sports is too tainted of a property to ever return. It is truly the end of their era.

It’s actually so frustrating that this game sold over 10 million units. This is the kinda game that ruins Nintendo’s reputation for casual audiences and I hope consumers actually think before buying games in the future. I can only hope Nintendo’s reaction to this isn’t to release more slop.
Yeah, I agee. But I think if it sold bad we would never see a new Wii Sports Title again…? The game is also this bad because they restarted development after a long time and had to get finished. So maybe the next will be better? I hope so.
@@kaiahnung4958 The series definitely deserves another Resort. I do think if anything the player decline will tell Nintendo that something went wrong and I can’t imagine sports will be left to just Mario.
@@paperluigi6132It really does not. There is absolutely negative shot that the game sold those 13 milion on its own merits. It got 100% boosted by technically being part of the Wii Sports-series.(and the fact that there was a boundle, which had its own Wii Sports-effect on the gamesales)
Hope they bring that to the Switch 2 (or whatever it's going to be called). Perhaps in combination with Switch Sports, cause I do enjoy the new sports in that one a lot as well. I can do without Wii Sports Club though.
It's weird how the items are just stock and brandless. Like imagine how cool it would be to unlock a Mario hoodie or a Kirby jumpsuit? EDIT: I forgot to mention Super Mario Maker 2 did this right with its collectibles, so I'm not sure why this was missed. EDIT; BASKETBALL EDITION: I'm somewhat surprised by the amount of comments deeming this video aging badly due to the new Summer Update. All they're doing is adding *one sport, a returning sport, with four-players and online slapped on, and it is the only part of this update. There's no hidden Easter egg like in that one Soccer update. It's just Basketball, something we've played since 2009.*
Honestly it would've been so cool if they did brand specific items like the Mario and Sonic games or had an option to purchase certain sets (or missing items) using points collected from playing sports. Honestly those two wou;d've gotten me interested in getting the game over having to play it in a week to get items.
I've noticed it is a habit for nintendo to allude to free updates and then never deliver. For example: when odyssey came out, everyone thought that their would be a Sunshine DLC because they put it on the loading screen map. There was never a Sunshine DLC. And even more maliciously: When Mario Maker 2 came out, they'd put the only new level style (3D World) under a seperate category titled "Extra Game Styles" with an empty slot for potential future styles. There was never a new style. It sucks that very passionate devs of games like Shovel Knight and No Man's Sky, create so much goodwill behind free updates and then Nintendo completely takes advantage of it for profits.
Nothing is really saying that these things weren't planned at the point the games first released, though. Didn't they say that Bowser's Fury was a repurposed Odyssey DLC?
@@lukiia9854 ok maybe the odyssey one was not a great point. "Unrealistic nostalgic standards" See here's the problem with that sentiment: They already have the Mii assets Even without Miitopia bumping up the customizability to an absurd degree, the Miis work well enough in general to this day (I wanna shut the Mario Kart Miis up so badly though) that they'd be fine as the main avatars here as well I don't necessarily mind the sportsmates in isolation, but it feels like a case where the focus of initial development was sorely misplaced and wasted as a result, and that's not even taking into consideration the fact that Badminton almost definitely got in to save dev hours
@@NitwitsWorld The fact that Daisy wasn't even there at launch shows how little they cared. Mario Kart 7 may have been missing Waluigi, another vital Mario character, but at least it was finished.

Switch Sports feels like another of the boneheaded decisions that was primarily made to push their garbage online subscription service with everything else about it being an afterthought. It honestly feels like almost all of Nintendo’s terrible decisions ever since the Switch launched have been in some way related to Nintendo Switch Online. Everything from requiring a subscription to play online in the first place to cloud saves being the only way to back up save data to voice chat only being supported via the mobile app to the closure of 3DS/Wii U eShops and Online services which was likely done in favour of making NSO the only official way to play any Nintendo games online or access legacy titles as it meant the only non-subscription alternatives were eliminated.
It is obscene how much better the Switch experience would have been if they like...cut the online access out of the NSO paywall entirely(barely anyone gets NSO for the online, lmao), aswell as having the permanent VC sales alongside it. It would improve the customer experience 10-fold, deincentivise them to make duds to shill online subs, aswell as get them more money overall. It's legit poor business for everyone including big N, lmao.
3DS and especially WiiU was because numbers had reached the lows that would’ve made further server maintenance not worth it. Why keep the servers up for like the thousands of people still there when the MILLIONS of others have already left? Like it or not, it’s business at the end of the day, and Nintendo knew that it was time to pull the plug.
Nintendo never had soul. Electronics never had soul. Nintendo never did Miis besides that era. Should us guys over 40 ask for the Power Glove and Rob the Robot to return because that was our childhood? Gotta get the nostalgic glasses off
@@DannyP-dm1pw You are definitely right. The thing is, people don't understand the power of nostalgia, and how specific it is to a specific person/generation, when they first start feeling it in their late 20s and 30s. @@joemamr710 Yep which is why when I was in my late 20's early 30's all I did was talk about how amazing the 90's were as a teen for everything but now that I'm 44 I just love hearing people enjoy memories that made their childhood great because the reality is not every person had a great childhood to begin with. I love hearing my younger cousins or friends talk about N64 or Gamecube the way I talk about SNES. Then again I was 20/21 during Xbox, PS2, Dreamcast and so forth. I loved it. Working and buying my own stuff and games. But yeah my biggest nostalgia is probably for Super Nintendo, Street Fighter 2 and then Tecmo Bowl on the NES. I also grew up with Gameboy and Commodore 64. I didn't have a NES in the 1980's. My 80's have great memories of toys, cartoons and sitcoms. It was a great time that can't be duplicated with today's technology. I still love physical things. Honestly it would have been really fun if it was with the original miis as well as if it wasn't locked to online players. I loved being able to customize my miis in Tomadachi life so I can imagine how fun it would be to be able to unlock outfits by playing sports
The Mii2.0s will never not be funny in a cursed way. I can remember when people in the german community made fun of them for having "zoomer haircuts". (They only stopped because the game lost all relevance after 2 months.)
It’s sad because I think the game could’ve easily been great. 2 things brought it down - a lack of games (considering Resort and having to wait for an extra one to be added) and perhaps the even bigger problem, it got caught in the crazy for online multiplayer battle royales when Wii Sports is best when you’re in the same room
People give games like hey pikmin and federation force a lot of shit which is funny because they’re not even bad games. Games like Mario strikers battle league and Nintendo switch sports deserve the hate way more
As someone who's played through the entirety of Hey!, this is very true Hey wasn't... great imo, but I definitely have more positives to say compared to Battle League and Sports
Hey Pikmin and Federation Force are fine enough games that came out at a bad time. They at least had some charm in them. Switch Sports and Battle League just proves that Nintendo pretty much stopped caring about their quality and people will still buy their games anyway.
If you go into the official financial data, Nintendo Switch Sports has sold more than you would expect. It has a really long tail and has sold at a consistent rate for years, seeing an uptick in late 2023 when all the content released for it. It has likely crossed 13 million copies by now.
Would the numbers of the bundle console count to tho? I technically have 2 copies as I pre ordered it but recently got a console bundle that Switch Sports came free with for €299.99
you act like the ONLY fun of this game is online. you should play soccer with friends (and the pen mode if you have the leg strap). its pretty fun even with CPUs. also tennis powerhouse with friends is hard!
I was excited for Switch Sports until I realized that Ring Fit exists and is a game that quite literally takes advantage of all aspects of the joycon in a way that 1-2 Switch and Switch Sports just couldn't.
Honestly, Go Vacation being re-released on the Switch had me way more excited than Switch Sports ever did. I knew immediately by that launch showcase if it would appeal to me or not. And I causelessly decided to just wait, and see how well the game does in a year and, how much gets added. I got my answer very fast. Glad I never jumped in.
Honestly if Nintendo just re-released Wii sports for the switch and maybe added a few new features like online play and being able to rome the island I'd be happy
Most people believe that switch sports killed the Wii Sports series but if you were there back in 2013. Wii Sports Club killed the series and switch sports made it more apparent that it’s even more dead.
When I think about it, Wii Sports is probably the best launch title for a video game console ever made. Not only does it show what the Wii is capable of, but people (especially families) still play it to this day.
I was in such denial when I got this game. I thought I had to unlock all the other games (which actually would have been fun) but then after an hour or so I was just like, “This is it…. isn’t it.”
I feel like the 3ds/Wii U was the last era they ever had where they tried to implement some level of personality/connection to the user withij the console. There's customization on the Switch, no music, no fun gimmicks or hidden tricks, nothing fun about it other than the fact that it can play the next generation of games. If the 3ds was capable of handling the graphic requirements of the Switch, I'd still take it over the Switch any other day.
Too bad, many fans on the internet trash 3ds Mario by calling it bland era, and 3ds Pokémon becoming the beginning of it’s downfall and smash 4, honestly why is smash 4 getting so much hate. And these games aren’t even bad, they just get hate for lame reasons
Knew the game was gonna flop when one of the dev interviews had one of the devs state that they couldn't recapture the charm of the original games I actually hate the switch era man
I'd say that the Switch era overall has been pretty good, but a lot of the smaller projects like this have been disappointing. Still, things like Odyssey, BotW, TotK, and Smash Ultimate have been absolutely incredible. These last few years have definitely suffered a bit, though
When you think about. This game was the “mega mind vs the doom syndicate “ of Nintendo’s catalog. We’re booth were things people were asking for but when they were revealed they were the exact opposite of what people wanted from them existing, and the internet tore them to shreds.
Honestly, if they had ported Wii Sports Resort to the Switch completely unmodified (even without new textures), it would have been *way* better than Switch Sports - Wii Sports Resort had 12 sports, twice that of Switch Sports, including many people loved from the original Wii Sports, like Bowling. Even if some like Soccer or Tennis (the former not existing before Switch Sports and the latter being replaced by Table Tennis) were missing, it still would have been a great way to bring this incredibly underrated game into the public eye once again.
I often get commercials for this game on TH-cam (Europe) in 2024. I purchased the original Wii at launch to try out Sports. Resort was a worthy successor and now this? Wuhu island is the most underrated Nintendo character IMHO… Great video, keep up the good work (blue ball LOL).
When I heard Switch Sports was coming, I was worried. Then watched Smii7y (was the first video I saw after release) play it and was not happy with the direction. Borrowed a copy from a family member who owns the game and gave it a spin. Made someone rage quit in tennis which was funny, but it didn't feel the same. Went as far as to getting my Wii out and getting Wii Sports Resort to relive the memories. Even as far as to getting more controllers so my younger siblings can experience the "Golden Age" as I consider it. The confliction was something to see. Both have a Switch (yet never play it) and in the matter of moments, they couldn't decide on whether Switch Sports or Wii Sports Resort was better. The simplicity was just better. Plus the modes...That moment you load up 100 pin bowling and see them all standing there for the first time. Or flying around the island. Or Wii Sports with Baseball or training. There was so much more choice!
I had enough pattern recognition skills to be wary of new Nintendo products over a decade ago. It's nice that others are finally catching on to how little Nintendo actually cares about them, but man, it sure showed how few people have basic pattern recognition.
Watching this after the june direct proudly announcing basketball coming this summer (we ARE in summer why don't we have a date yet wtf) is even funnier, and apparently they found kayaking in the files, so they still are counting on having this game on life support for 2-3 more years ? Agreed. Splatoon works because it’s a multiplayer shooter game, and most of the fun parts come from the online, so it makes sense to give that game free updates. But sports games? REALLY!?
they could've done so much with the city setting, man. especially with how willing they are in this to make games like soccer where you have more traditional joystick controls mixed in. they could've brought back basketball, done skateboarding with motion control air tricks or balancing, done parkour where you have to make climbing motions and are going for a fast time, anything like that!

I only really ever played Tennis and Bowling on this game and the fact that Online bowling doesn't let you choose if you want normal or obstacle bowling (which I hate) was enough for me to give up. No Baseball or Boxing on a console with motion controls, criminal. This video did give me a new perspective, I had never thought how useless the game is in offline mode, I always played online and never gave it a second thought.
I feel like the building in the bottom right corner of the map could definitely be added as basketball, seeing as it looks like a basketball logo on the top.
Good vid dude :) the “out of the park” bit during the golf stall and the godot theme with the voice trailing out were two masterclass editing techniques, well done. I like ur craft, u have a new sub :D
I will say that as someone who really only ever played golf and bowling anyway on wii sports, I think switch sports is way underrated. I think alot the criticisms you have are fairly valid, but I also think that a lot of the 10 million people who bought the game, and their family who is only going to play every now and then don't care about all the cosmetics and online. I think this game actually does a good job at balancing stuff you can work towards on your own and party play
Honestly I passed on Switch Sports because it felt like it focused so much on online play and solo play was an afterthought. Also I thought they would at least put in the original sports lineup. I also didn't like having to hold down the button the whole time in bowling and idk sometimes you just want to play a regular 'ole bowling where it's just you. Oh and hearing you couldn't party up with a friend (as I was thinking of convincing my online friends to get it). Anyway, there's no way they couldn't have put in Boxing when there's at least 3 Fitness Boxing games in the eShop. I also don't know why they didn't have Golf ready on release. I didn't follow this game, but it's also crazy how they just stopped at Golf in terms of adding more sports. Like idk, back when they announced Golf was coming soon I got the impression that more was coming. Like baseball, basketball, and modes/challenges that were in the previous Sports games. I do think the player models looked cute, though I still do miss the Miis, but it was an absolute crime they took away the animation of throwing your bowling ball behind you and everyone watching getting scared. I'm glad I played in the playtest and decided not to get this game now that I know what ended up happening.
I took my switch on vacation a few months ago. Me and my cousin decided to try to play switch sports together. To our horror, we realized you can’t play 2 player without the switch docked. Like WHY NINTENDO? YOU CAN ON 1 2 SWITCH! WHY NOT ON THIS GAME??? I haven’t gone back to the game since
I was really looking forwards to getting a sports game on the Switch, but when I saw they only had six sports, I was incredibly disappointed. What made the Wii sports and Wii sports resort so fun was that they had such a multitude of sports, with tons of hidden minigames. The fact there were so many options is what made the games so good, since if you got bored of one, you could just pick another sport or minigame, and you could continue having fun for hours. I also llved that WSR had a well executed theme of a holiday resort at a volcanic island, and so many of the sports had you seeing the island and exploring different areas of it. The fact they got rid of this concept and made the sports entirely disconnected again made it all look so boring. In the end, I am really glad I didn't get this game.
This video made me realize how much Nintendo and gaming as a whole has changed since my childhood. Imagine if there was something like the mii channel today where every single customization was already there. for free. Not only that, but each wii came with a free copy of an iconic game that, again, requires absolutely no DLC and is completely finished. something that like is unthinkable today.
5:29 don't forget BotW/TotK used miis as a customizable base for NPCs, not saying that's what miis should look like but the room for improvement is there 😭
I do not have any hesitation or exaggeration in my mind to honestly say Nintendo Switch Sports is the worst Nintendo game ever made. Sure, the game looks great, the character designs and artstyle looks nice, everything plays well, there’s no major bugs or glitches and the gameplay is solid overall. But, when it comes to how much it left an impact, the game is for sure, one of Nintendo’s laziest, most soulless, factory produced, corporate waste they ever put out. Everything about it screams lack of effort or care to put the slightest bit of actual love in it. It’s a little insulting that they market this junk as the sequel to Wii Sports Resort when that game was peak charm and fun game design, made 12 years before.
There are far worse games out there lol, like I don’t like switch sports either but saying all of that is kinda reminding me of the old demeech thumbnail
While I don't agree that Nintendo Switch Sports is the worst Nintendo game ever made, because there are FAR worse Nintendo games out there (like Paper Mario: Sticker Star, Paper Mario: Color Splash, Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, Chibi-Robo: Zip-Lash), I still agree that it is just not a good game.
I still play this, they took away the feature that lets you’re guest (whoever your playing with) get two rewards a week. Now you get nothing because you don’t pay for two online subscriptions on one console.

They focused so much on online play that they forgot some people (everyone) don’t want to play this game for the online, but for the fun of it, and the online should’ve been the only thing they gave it as dlc, and it should’ve had it by the end of the release month, so it actually got to be a good game with success

As much as I hate it too you just know Nintendo doesn't care either way

The former was literally just an Easter egg that they had to unfortunately remove when speculation became too rampant.

Am I the only person who actually likes this game??! 😭
I with you brother. This has to be the most hated game all time😂😂😂
Compared to old entries, this sucks. I’d rather go outside for Badminton. You can’t capture it in a game like this.
Playing locally is pretty fun
Playing period is pretty fun, it’s a fun game just needed way more sports💯
5:29 don't forget BotW/TotK used miis as a customizable base for NPCs, not saying that's what miis should look like but the room for improvement is there 😭
is that the fucking shin megami tensei II dance hall music like 7 minutes into the video what the hell
That game is based
Damn I had no idea about the little cheat that allows you to face the OGs
Super emotional and exaggerated opinion lmao it’s a fun sports game. It wasn’t trying to save your marriage or stop climate change.
@@Loner098 Paper Mario Color Splash is pretty good and at least Zip Lash and Amiibo Festival are fun to make fun of how terrible they are.
@@NickMario1I respect your opinion but I don’t wanna be reminded of that Demeech video.
You're very funny, great writing and timing btw
Well a new sport is just added, so maybe they will add other sports as well in the coming year?
It took 2 years for them to add another sport.
@@dragonbornexpress5650 still better then nothing I guess😅
26:36 This parallels so many game cycles. Currently Multiversus is experiencing it
The only good thing we got from this game was *National Leg Strap Day*
Demeech made that a holiday
I still play this, they took away the feature that lets you’re guest (whoever your playing with) get two rewards a week. Now you get nothing because you don’t pay for two online subscriptions on one console.
