- In 1985, the Kansas City Chiefs were in the middle of a two-game losing streak, and with their season seemingly slipping away, head coach John Mackovic decided to do something to improve the team's concentration and to try and right the ship. His idea? It was so bad that it would not only never fly today, but it didn't even last an entire week because of the backlash it got. This is a breakdown of one of the dumbest things any coach has ever done

John Mackovic went on to run the Texas Longhorns into the ground, and then the Arizona Wildcats before having a full blown player revolt. I think they ended up sending a letter to the AD and school president, and he resigned shortly after.
Mackovic did win a Big 12 Championship in 1996, but they also had Ricky Williams.
@@redmustangredmustangAnd Priest Holmes, Dan Neil, Phil Dawson and Bryant Westbrook. Naturally, despite a preseason no 8 ranking, they underachieved all season: 1-5 vs ranked teams (the lone exception being a win over Nebraska in the new Big 12 Title Game, which got them a Cotton Bowl invite). No way that team should’ve been a 5 loss team. They slipped to 4-7 the next year, and Mackovic was gone. Dude would’ve messed up a wet dream.
The year when the Cade McNown UCLA Bruins smoked the Longhorns in Austin by a bazillion points (66-3) sealed the fate of the Mackovic era.
He just wasn’t the kind of coach that was used to in Austin. He got rid of little things they would do. At first people would say “he’s a pro coach, he’ll get results just wait.” His style was just not what Texas understood.
I forget what newspaper or magazine it was in but there was a funny cartoon of the Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes saying to Mackovic “What kind of wine goes with a butt whuppin’.”
Teams coached by Mackovic would have done better if they had spiked him to the ground on every single play.

Mike Brown is just a little rich boy that inherited everything from his father. He's never done anything with his life except run a mediocre football team that has never won a SB because of his poor leadership.

Seeing the Bengals rank so poorly on their report card in early 2024 doesn't surprise me at all given how cheap they've been known to be under Mike Brown. As for the Chiefs, their first game after the free lunch ban wouldn't the last time they would lose to the Rams 16-0 at the house. As for Mackovic, this wasn't the last time he didn't do right by his players and I've heard some grousing about him over the years. He communicated with his players at the University of Arizona very poorly and things got so bad in Tucson that there was a mutiny against him and he didn't even last halfway through his 3rd season there, being run after only 5 games.
How can any team have the energy to even play without food?
I guess that explains why he was fired after the 1986 season despite leading the Chiefs to a 10-6 record and a postseason berth.

Seriously, the people who say Chiefs fans are bandwagoners should realize just how Mickey Mouse this franchise was from Hank Stram's firing until Carl Peterson's hiring. Yeah, there are a lot of new Chiefs fans since Mahomes. But a lot of us put up with this crap.
This does make me view the 1986 Chief player-led mutiny (looking at you, Nick Lowery) a little more favorably....

TBF... Blackledge would have thrown 6 ints on a full stomach. Mackovic ruined both Kenney and Blackledge and would have ruined any other QB from that 83 draft besides Elway.
If the draft had turned out differently, we’d probably be talking about how big of a bust Marino was in KC.

@MilsurpMikeChannel I don't know why they kept both Kenney and Blackledge by 1985. If you draft a guy that high, make a committment one way or the other by year 3. They stupidly kept both for five years before trading Todd away in 1988 to the Steelers.

I agree that Blackledge would have thrown 6 interceptions on a full stomach, but it was because he sucked before Mackovic did anything to him. Our scouts must have been drunk to think he was a first round prospect. He was terrible. Andy Reid couldn't do anything with this chump. I still get pissed off every time I see him on TV. Could Mackovic have ruined the other QBs in that draft? Perhaps. I don't know. I just know Blackledge sucked.
@@patrickstewart3446 That's rich. You don't think Dan Marino could put up amazing passing stats anywhere? No way in hell, particularly as KC at this time had some very nice receivers in Carlos Carson and Stephone Paige. Dan Marino was the ultimate QB, with all the tools. Truth be told, what did Miami do with such an amazing player? One Super Bowl appearance? That's a joke!!! He could hardly have done worse in KC. In a way, he WAS a bust in Miami, winning so little with such godlike talent and ability. If anything, SHULA AND MIAMI RUINED MARINO, or at least his teams. Marino should have retired as hands down the greatest QB in pro football history with the personal talent he had and should have had a trunkload of Lombardis.
The thing that got me about that report card was ratings for child care.

Back then? Not so much alot of the lower tier players sold insurance and worked regular jobs to pay bills. Only super good players were making millions back then.
Man this makes the shit that Tom Coughlin did when he was the coach of the Jaguars make him look like a saint in comparison to what John Mackovic did in 1985 because Coughlin did some insane shit but he never starved his players. I agree with some of the polices like the curfew and the allowing of guests at the hotel but denying them food is going way too far.
Old school coaches would deny players water during practice. One coach even put oatmeal in the water to dissuade players from drinking any!
That was because they thought it "would toughen you up". They really didn't understand the ramifications of dehydration back then. I didn't play football, but I played hockey and I was on the receiving end of the same thing. Thankfully I didn't have to power skate in summer heat. That was the logic though. And we went right along with it.

Chiefs also graded real bad according to the NFLPA when it came to the facilities. The only reason the Chiefs are winning are that they have a great coach in Andy Reid, great defensive coordinator in Steve Spagnuolo and hall of famers in Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones.

Andy Reid would never tell Mahomes and company they can’t eat. In fact they’d have to drag Reid away from the table.

Jg9-this is the second video you’ve made with the chiefs in it-John mackovic was a disciple of Dallas cowboys coach Tom Landry which explains the way he ran the chiefs-and might have resulted in his getting fired after the 1986 season when they made the playoffs for the first time since 1971 because of their special teams play and put in frank gansz in his pi place! Bill Kennedy kenney wasn’t popular with some of the players-can’t imagine any thing worse at this time! 😮😮😮😮😮😅😅

That’s when I was growing up. As far as the Royals and baseball. The Royals were a popular team with many of my classmates in Louisiana.
Biggest reason? George Brett! In this time period he had to be the biggest star athlete that played any sport in Kansas City!
Maybe one good thing about college athletes being paid that they will refuse to sign for teams that score poorly on these scorecards.

I didn't start seriously following football until I was about 12, so when I looked back in Chiefs history, I knew they were terrible during the 70's and 80's. But I never understood why Lamar Hunt fired the second ever head coach in Chiefs history to make the postseason. As the years have gone by, however, it's painfully obvious why. Mackovich was an obvious douche, and that's why he got fired everywhere he went.
By the way, I'm seeing in the comments that he was terrible in Arizona? As a Tucson resident and proud UofA fan (sorry JG9 😂), can somebody educate me on what happened?
