  • During a 1987 NFL game between the Atlanta Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, CBS provided a score update of a Major League Baseball game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets for supremacy in the NL East. The only problem with the score update? It was completely fake

There a visual joke in a Futurama episode about the Mets. Futurama is set in the year 3000, so they show the marquee at Shea Stadium and it says “home of the 1969 and 1986 Champions” meaning they haven’t won again in those 1000 years in the future where Futurama takes place.

Fun Fact: In 1986, one of the teams who began 0-1 ended up going 17-1 the rest of the year and won the Super Bowl…the NY Giants. They also gave up 31 points to Dallas that night and wouldn’t give up that many points in any game the rest of the year.

To my understanding, the home team makes the decision about whether or not to play the game until the home plate umpire/crew chief says "Play ball!" Then it's the umpire's choice.
When I umpired, one veteran umpire told a story about a home team that wanted to get the game in despite the conditions being unsafe. He said, "Play!" then immediately after that called time because after he said "Play! it was HIS choice.

The Mets wanted to play the game badly because if they didn’t, it’d be made up on the final day of the season in St. Louis, and the Cards would get their starting first baseman back. This reminds me a lot of what ESPN did 11 years later when airing a CART race from Cleveland's Lakefront Airport. At the same time this race was airing on ESPN, another major sporting event was airing on ABC which had pretty much the entire planet watching it. I am talking about the World Cup final between Brazil & France which featured players like Zidane & the original Ronaldo. There was a lot of anticipation for this World Cup final as many wondered if Brazil could retain their title they had won in 1994 or if France could finally win the World Cup on home soil. On lap 50 of the race (the midway point) ESPN provided viewers with a score update from the World Cup final & the update said that the match was tied 2-2 heading into the 90th minute. However this was one big lie as it was actually 3-0 to France in one of the most lopsided World Cup finals ever as Brazil barely put up a fight. It was later found that someone in the ESPN production truck for the CART race had done what CBS had done here & created the score out of thin air perhaps in an effort to try to get sister station ABC some more viewers for the World Cup final. Bob Varsha who was calling the race for ESPN had to apologize to viewers & provide them with the correct score. Then to make things even worse, ESPN on the same CART broadcast lied about who won the NASCAR race from New Hampshire by saying it was Jeff Gordon who won when in reality it was Jeff Burton who won. More people were upset about ESPN lying about the NASCAR race than they were about them lying about the World Cup which shows us how popular NASCAR was at the time. Overall this was a very bad look for ESPN on this day.

This happened in the WWF when they accidentally released the WWF Magazine with Randy Savage as the new champion *before* Wrestlemania IV.
Then WCW did the same thing six years later when they aired the wrong Control Center segment in which Mean Gene announced the Hogan/Flair match at Bash at the Beach days *before* the Flair/Sting unification match at Clash of the Champions (that on top of the Disney tapings which were already bad enough)

The funny thing, a couple weeks later in 1987, the NBC station in Detroit choose the final game in a 3 game series between the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays over the NFL game airing that week. WDIV (the NBC station in Detroit) have a sizeable viewing audience in Canada (as WDIV is carried over many cable systems in Canada), and what more, the winner of the Tigers/Jays game would win the AL East.

The winner of the game would win the East if it were the Tigers. If the Jays won there would have been a game 163 playoff. The Tigers did complete the 3-game sweep and win division by 2 games. And JG9 pointed out, it was during the strike. My college roommate actually went to the Lions-Bucs scab game during the strike. 4000 fans in the 84,000-seat Silverdome.

The score of the sports game is the lie you are worried about? I think they lie about a lot more stuff that is way more important than the score of a football game.

    From 'The Big Sombrero'
There was a radio newscaster at a small market station outside of Ottawa who made countless on-air errors announcing incorrect scores for hockey and football games. It got so bad, the announcer called the quarterback you mentioned, Steve DeBerg, as Steve ED-Berg!! LIKE THE SWEDISH TENNIS STAR!! WHAT?!? How did this person get a job only to constantly make numerous errors that had me throwing cushions across the bedroom?!? I could have done a better job!! Even with a bad, pre-cataract surgery, eyesight!!!!
5:53 - The catchphrase returns. No wonder David Archer wound up in Sacramento, San Antonio, and the final season of the Ottawa Rough Riders in the CFL.
Referee for the Falcons / Bucs game was none other than one time American Gladiators referee Bob McElwee.
Did Howard Stern have his 'TV Show' on Channel 9 WWOR back then in 1987? Nice use of the Mary Tyler Moore font for the baseball graphics.
