Ironically 2 years later, the same season the Bears slaughtered my Patriots in the Super Bowl, Ditka got arrested for DUI driving home from O’Hare following a game against the Niners in San Francisco.
Earl banked at the bank my late uncle worked at. My uncle was a VP and would help with some of the several Bear players that banked there. Earl was the one he spoke with the most. Since my uncle was a lifelong Bear fan he got us a team signed football from either the 77 or 78 season. I still have it (and Payton signed it too).
In 77 Robin Earl had a crucial catch on the winning drive again the Giants at Meadowlands in an ice storm. He kept the drive alive and Bob Thomas won it with a FG at the gun. First playoff team since 63 only to get throttled by the SB champ Cowboys the next week. Also, in 84 Pat Dunsmore caught the game winning TD in the Bears first playoff win since 63 against Washington. They then lost next wk against SB champ 49ers.
Robin Earl would continue his football career with the Birmingham Stallions of the flegling-USFL and I would be at Soldier Field for his 1984 local return against the 2nd Chicago Blitz.
@@jimmderby5772 Wrightman, played for the excellent, original Blitz who moved to AZ; I saw the sad, unfortunate, 1984 second Blitz with Vince Evans & Doug Plank.
DUI wasn’t as big a deal back then. Ditka got arrested for DUI after getting off the plane for a game during their 1985 Super Bowl season. Eventually the NFL banned alcohol from team flights because it happened a lot.
If you haven't checked it out already, look up Steve Little, kicker and punter of the St Louis Cardinals from 1977-80. To my knowledge, he had the absolute worst and tragic result of an NFL player getting cut. Unlike Robin Earl and others of this circumstance, Little's life was permanently and horribly changed.
Ditka came in and cleaned house across the offense, it just didn't include Robin Earl. Only Walter was safe. Buddy Ryan controlled the defense. For Robin Productions he was vastly underpaid 75k seems like a deep insult to me. Mike Hardestine got a raw deal as well and the Fridge took his position after all the great years he had for the Bears.
Is this really a story? Ditka got bagged drunk driving during the 1985 season. It happens all the time to football players and coaches. I thought this story would at least end with hookers and cocaine or something
I remember the 1980 MNF Game vs the Browns in Cleveland. Bears QB Vince Evans was called for Intentional Grounding when he threw the ball into the endzone stands!
Robin Earl Could play in the NFL Now. big Dude and looked like he had pretty good speed. Gronk Type. Emery Moorehead was a Ditka Favorite but He sucked just a blocker and got tackled after catching a ball if he got opened. Ditka should have kept Earl instead of picking up Moorehead. Also I believe Cap Boso and Tim Wrightman and Later Ryan Wetnight was way better then Moorehead ! Wish Kmet look at Game Film of Ryan Wetnight and see how to get open and make the most of his talent.
I don't think I would come down as hard as JG9 does on Robin. If you take a look at the films, the Bears' 'quarterbacks' almost always put Robin in a bad position after each catch, only for him to be hit hard then. Also for protecting 'Sweetness' he gets my hero award. Nobody should ever drink and drive; hopefully Robin learned from this, and is now leading a good life.
At first I thought this was about Sam Hurd, who not only wore the same jersey number for the Bears, but also ended his career under similar circumstances.
No, that’s Vince Evans. He had one of the best arms in football go back and look at Vince Evans, whatever it takes and fast forward past the Raiders and go to Warriors playing for the Bears. He throws some bombs hiring farther than even Aaron Rodgers cried and ran like Fields.
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about the bizarre story of the Colts cutting Derrick Hatchett that same year.
Dick had a reputation as a player's coach but I don't think most of the players agreed with that image. He was an angry man who coasted off of Ryan's great, but gimmicky defense. Notice the 6-4 has never led to anything after 85 when coaches had a full off-season of prep and video
When Ditka😊 took over the team it was time to move on from the players that were not Ditka type players we got rid of him and other and got to the Super Bowl in 3 yrs

I remember the FG against the Giants. It was actually one of the most exciting moments in Bears history.

I'm a little surprised jg9 didn't drop that fact in the vid
That’s right. Thank you. He continued to play football, just not in the NFL.

Yep, I remember it well. Crashed on I-270 and was left a quadriplegic.

Every die hard Husky fan knows about Robin Earl…One hell of a fullback.

Great Robin Earl footage, thank you. It's always fun to watch da Bears!
I remember him playing at UW for Jim Owens where he played fullback. He was a real beast.
Robin was a good player. Ditka did him wrong.
Ditka did a lot of players wrong. Huge ego, never liked him. He would always side with management in contract holdouts.

Would you say Earl's day was worse than what happened with Lewis Billups in 1992?
Probably not, but still really bad
Nowhere near- to my knowledge, Earl wasn't a career criminal like Billups became
This took forever to get going. Good idea, but... I'll watch your next video.
I literally found out more about Earl's post-NFL life from the comments section than I did from your video.

I can't stand drunk drivers. I can understand why the existing NFL clubs wanted no part of him even after his USFL (original) run.
Wow! You really padded this out! 😴
I could have told this story in 3 minutes.
Another example of a YT video that's about 300 percent inflated, almost all "clickbait", very little info. Your video is a WASTE of TIME.
Not to nitpick, but if he got arrested after midnight, your "Cut and Arrested on the Same Day" headline is incorrect.
In a 24 hour period.
@@peterolbrisch8970Agreed. Just not the same day.
He could be go to the USFL for a little while and after that he will would go to the CFL 🇨🇦 for 6 years and get on a NFL team for 5 years.
