This year AMD has two designs -> Chiplet Dragon Range HX and the usual HS series which is monolithic. 7040HS is delayed to April. It's the true successor to previous 8 core AMD H/HX/HS series.
@@techstation365 Pheonix is high end laptop. Performance is key, not battery life. If you want battery life, get a thin and light or go with an arm chip like an M1-2
Just to be clear - You don't care that much about battery life when you rock desktop performance , 4h is more than enough , otherwise get something else . I have the G751 for 6 years now , and I still love it . I've paid 1500$ for top tier hardware ( stripped down - no ssd, windows and 8 gb ram ) , but now you have to pay 2x more for the same performance .
I hate that design. It feels cheap AF, plastic makes cracking sounds, flexes a lot, catches fingerprints very easily, overall feels weak. The chassis alone for me is enough to avoid this laptop (I had both Scar 15 and G17 from 2022 with that chassis). The screen has huge bleeding issues too.
it's inexcusable to have not only the bad webcam, but no USB4 ports in such an expensive laptop. Asus was in 2022 and still is offering Thunderbolt 4 even on their budget-conscious F15 2021... No to mention there seems to be no IR for Windows Hello either.
These sort of performance is starting to break down that wall between desktop and laptops. It was always said desktops offered better performance for the value but now we are getting desktop performance in a laptop. AMD efficiency is insane
i wouldn't say is AMD , it's more like a TSMC thing , if intel where to use TSMC to make their cpus , they'll almost the same efficiency as AMD. an other thing to know is that Nvidia gain a lot of efficiency going from Samsung nodes to TSMS nodes.
I will go for Zen4 with RDN3 APU laptops. It's good for 1080p gaming, and down the line, you can always buy an external GPU to upgrade, for higher-resolution gaming. If you are a gamer. Personally, I don't need an external GPU. Because I only need a good fast processor so I can make music.
Either the Zen 4 CPU's are really inefficient or the iGPU eats too much power. Or that the CPUs are behaving like desktops where it sips almost 30+ watts during idle. Or that 16 cores are too power hungry in standby. Otherwise I think it's a solid desktop replacement. Unless you want it lugging around, it's solid enough to get through work no problem.
Chiplets = inherently high idle power draw. It takes energy to move data from chip to chip. Nothing AMD can do about the inherent laws of physics. Now I do expect things to get a bit better as AMD further tunes Raphael's BIOS code & chipset drivers specifically for mobile (for maybe another ≈+10-20% more time per charge), but I'm not be expecting ANY dramatic changes to battery life on Dragon Range ever happening. AMD very deliberately choose to go ALL IN on performance at the expense of battery life. This is a DESKTOP REPLACEMENT. Not your thing and want a balance of both? Get a monolithic Phoenix APU based machine instead (8c/16t Zen 4 + 12x RDNA 3 CU's). 🤷
great review Eber, I think the 4080 version of this would be perfect for me (1080p highest settings on a 17" screen would suit me fine)....but that price is STILL to high, but i guess what else do we expect when it has Nvidia AND rog taxes applied 😐I don't know what tax is worse - you can see why many people are doubting the ROG Ally handheld will be less than $1000
The comparisons are so misleading. He compares the Titan that actually runs at 175 watts but for some reason is running at 150 watts and its in balance mode instead of its extreme mode to the scar that actually is running at 175 watts and in its turbo mode. What's the point of comparing laptops when one is running at maximum power and the other isn't? Thank God you can just go to other reviewers like Gizmoslip tech and get the truth.
The iGPU's performance will showcase the gaming and productivity performance of the Ryzen 7X40 series since the 7X30 series is based on the Ryzen 6000 series of last year. It will be interesting to know how they will perform in thin and light notebooks sans dedicated GPUs.
I am looking at Strix Scar 17 with 7940HX cpu and 4060 rtx. I only gaming lightly and intend to utilize it running numerical modelling. Will it be a good buy in 2024?
I'm really curious what the battery life on this laptop is when you disable the GPU. I've had other ASUS laptops like this, and going to GPU Eco mode within ASUS Armory Crate (which turns the GPU off) quadrupled my battery life. lol. I went from 2 hours to 8.
Seeing the performance on Cinebench and productive workloads kinda makes the 2.9k price tag not that bad tbh.The cpu is nearly the equivalent of the current best 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗸𝘁𝗼𝗽 offering while being in a form factor that is much easier to move around and use. Battery life might be poor for as a laptop, but great when looked from a desktop perspective in which is pretty much a UPS that has plenty of runtime to do a proper shutdown anywhere as its a built in battery. Will be interesting on how other brands will offer such a configuration and at what price.
I’m torn between this or a high end MacBook Pro 16. Windows or Mac is fine. I feel like the Max would run fast enough, with battery battery, better screen, and probably not as loud.
Could you do a comparison between the Strix Scar 17 and the Strix Scar 18 (i9 13980 HX)? Am looking to upgrade from my 6 year old 1050 ti lappy, can't decide between the two.
I'd go for Intel. You won't use it on battery much anyway, and the CPU can be undervolted for some extra efficiency gains. The screen is better, the speakers are better. You could also look into the Aorus 17X, I got it. High quality aluminum case, performance is very good, the 4090 stays very cool. And it's cheaper than most other high end laptops.

What the heck happened to getting a top-tier chassis with an i7 or Ryzen 7. Not everyone is gonna edit videos professionally or something and battery life on the go as well as thermals+noise if not also clock speeds when the GPU is sucking up 125w++ matters more to most buyers.
Too few USB A ports for that size of a laptop, needs at least an extra, maybe 2 on the right hand side for mouse and gamepad micro dongles. Also needs a SD slot.

@@grimmlinn Pheonix Range is your usual Monolithic design like we had with AMD in the past in laptops. Usual 6 core and 8 core designs with terrific battery life.
@@grimmlinn AMD literaly brands Phoenix as high end thin and light CPU, U series will be 15-28W while the HS series will be 35-45W.
@@duckshunt I suppose sales will tell how well AMD succeeds in high powered thin and lights
Wow, this even makes short work of the MSI Titan. It's a beast (at a beastly price too).
Strix lineup looks like something Acer/MSI will create. Plastic galore with zero design improvement
All business!
When I run PBO instead of an all-core overclock, the 7945hx doubles my 5900X's r23 score while pulling 40w less power
it's inexcusable to have not only the bad webcam, but no USB4 ports in such an expensive laptop. Asus was in 2022 and still is offering Thunderbolt 4 even on their budget-conscious F15 2021... No to mention there seems to be no IR for Windows Hello either.
I'm confused about the gaming tests since the M16 can go up to 150W in manual mode
This guy love to nerf perfomance for quiet fan. Look at new razer blade. They are actually blazing fast.
Sometimes your criticism is bizarre, most peeps with any standard computer bag will carry that box with brick with no problem,
These sort of performance is starting to break down that wall between desktop and laptops.
7 lbs is heavy? Weak modern man, shameful
1440p results probably the most relevant cause of the integrated display
I just ordered it was on sale for 2200, it arrives friday. Ill keep yall updated
Update?
Either the Zen 4 CPU's are really inefficient or the iGPU eats too much power. Or that the CPUs are behaving like desktops where it sips almost 30+ watts during idle. Or that 16 cores are too power hungry in standby.
Otherwise I think it's a solid desktop replacement. Unless you want it lugging around, it's solid enough to get through work no problem.
16 cores are very power hungry alot desktops cpu like the i5 12400f have alot less consume in idle
@@dd22koopaesverde58 no. They're not. The last year's 16 cores are pretty efficient. But this years are just build different.
@@joelconolly5574 go for a r7 7745hx or 7740hs is better for gaming
They need to put bigger batteries or better technology...
great review Eber, I think the 4080 version of this would be perfect for me (1080p highest settings on a 17" screen would suit me fine)....but that price is STILL to high, but i guess what else do we expect when it has Nvidia AND rog taxes applied 😐I don't know what tax is worse - you can see why many people are doubting the ROG Ally handheld will be less than $1000
How does the New RDNA 3 iGPU perform?
It’s actually on par with desktops Cinebench.
The silicon lottery is hard to win.
My 7950x scored 35900
What about the G17 ROG Strix? Not the SCAR...? Can you do a video on that?, it is Sub $2k with the same CPU and 4060
The comparisons are so misleading.
The review was good, but a little emphasis on the iGPU would have made it great. That would have given us an idea of the iGPU’s performance.
The iGPU is a 2CU RDNA2 GPU I believe
@@FluffyPuppyKasey I thought it was the new & shiney radeon 780m.
The iGPU's performance will showcase the gaming and productivity performance of the Ryzen 7X40 series since the 7X30 series is based on the Ryzen 6000 series of last year. It will be interesting to know how they will perform in thin and light notebooks sans dedicated GPUs.

Anyone with one of these notice Coil Whine? Eyeing one of these here in Vancouver but want sensitive to coil whining.
I am looking at Strix Scar 17 with 7940HX cpu and 4060 rtx. I only gaming lightly and intend to utilize it running numerical modelling. Will it be a good buy in 2024?
That poor battery life is the biggest twist ever. That HAS to be an optimization issue
This should be marketed as a mobile workstation instead of a gaming machine.
2 years later its still the most powerful gaming laptop, i just grabbed one on sale for $3000
I'm really curious what the battery life on this laptop is when you disable the GPU. I've had other ASUS laptops like this, and going to GPU Eco mode within ASUS Armory Crate (which turns the GPU off) quadrupled my battery life. lol. I went from 2 hours to 8.
You are right, AMD zen 3+ with Echo mode and silent profile can stands for 8 hour! When i experienced that, my haw dropped! 😂
Yeah I thought the same. Probably the dedicated GPU sucking power
I would’ve bought the ryzen model if it came with the new chassis/ cooling system
That new cooling system with 3 fans is. necessary for Intel 13th gen, but for AMD this cooling system with 2 fans is enough and more quieter
Thank you for staying in touch with the price!!! I got the g15 advantage edition and it cost less than half the price. It’s a over priced laptop.
Wtf? No USB 4? Damn!!!
ur opinion on whether 4k is required at this screen size or 1440p is good enough?
4k isn’t really required but 1440p is ideal minimum
4 hours batterylife is still better than what we got in the 90s ;)
The keyboard deck looks like previous Strix G17s, right?
Can you please review the all new galaxy book 3 ultra by samsung,
It's worth reviewing
If only pci 4.0 x8 ports were common on laptops for a proper egpu I'd get one instead of a desktop
I’m torn between this or a high end MacBook Pro 16. Windows or Mac is fine. I feel like the Max would run fast enough, with battery battery, better screen, and probably not as loud.
How's editing with this laptop? I've heard from others that editing takes a long time because it's a Ryzen.
I have 2060 r7 4800 from 2 years(since COVID days) should I upgrade it this year or the wait for next year?
Why titan is at balanced mode?
out of topic and i need reply thanks does power extension improve gaming while on laptop ? 😅ty
good and honest review
They can't even give you a 2 tb drive for $2900?
Better hope there's multiple m.2 slots, because 1 tb isn't going to go far if you're editing video.
My G17 2022 6900HX pull 90W on cinebench r20 on manual and turbo mode it only does around 77W on performance
Im deciding between the G16 and the g17, also the m16 zepher.
Will there be a 18 inch version of the ryzen 9 version?
my 7945hx will set at 20~30w when doing nothing, really killing its battly life and hot and fan runs
my brother i5 12400f desktop cpu have 10w when doing nothing
Could you do a comparison between the Strix Scar 17 and the Strix Scar 18 (i9 13980 HX)? Am looking to upgrade from my 6 year old 1050 ti lappy, can't decide between the two.
I'd go for Intel. You won't use it on battery much anyway, and the CPU can be undervolted for some extra efficiency gains. The screen is better, the speakers are better.
You could also look into the Aorus 17X, I got it. High quality aluminum case, performance is very good, the 4090 stays very cool. And it's cheaper than most other high end laptops.
@@Amber57499 yep, AMD can have better scaling performance for each wattage on the smaller package, but increasing TDP here means that we're seeing diminishing returns when more performance comes at the cost of power usage.

I don’t think using the same design is bad if it works e.g. MacBooks, Surface, XPS 🤷♂️ It’s better for the environment too since they can keep using the same molds. 16:9 is also more compatible w/ games w/ 16:10 putting letter boxing, it is a gaming laptop first. That webcam is 🐶 💩 tho

$3800 USD. Impressive, very nice.
I wish you could review 7940HS as well that is like 8core/16thread but that has Radeon 780m IGP RDNA3. I would like to see that IGP performance.
Do people actually use gaming laptop for work as primary use? I'm not a gamer but these specs seems really nice for my workloads. Seems a bit bulky to carry around by my Lenovo workstation isn't that much better either.
22.5 watts for browsing on battery?..
What the heck happened to getting a top-tier chassis with an i7 or Ryzen 7. Not everyone is gonna edit videos professionally or something and battery life on the go as well as thermals+noise if not also clock speeds when the GPU is sucking up 125w++ matters more to most buyers.
i would love for you to review some budget options which are good
Too few USB A ports for that size of a laptop, needs at least an extra, maybe 2 on the right hand side for mouse and gamepad micro dongles. Also needs a SD slot.

This laptop is the cheapest rtx 4080 in Italy at 2555. The closest rival to this is Asus g16 strix with nebula screen or the msi vector gp68 with full hd screen. There is also alienware with similar screen but at 16-10 aspect ratio but that is 300 euros more expensive and comes with a worse chip. Upgradability plays a crucial role for my purchase I am waiting a huge sale but this is a great laptop for cost to performance
