Agree. I'm on the hunt for a 4060 laptop, but almost no reviews.. :/ Perhaps I'm waiting for RDNA 4 laptops instead since prices are through the roof right now.
That’s because most reviewers don’t buy most laptops they review, and rely on manufacturers sending them laptops to review. Manufacturers then, of course, usually send the higher spec laptops to make their laptops look good in benchmarks...
Honestly the Strix G18 and G16 are basically two of the same laptop as the Scars minus the translucent finish and back RGB. There's not too many differentiator performance, software and finish wise. I don't think it's a bad experience getting the Strix over the Strix Scar since it's performance is gonna be identical to the bone. Unless the Scar has any better, I think the standard Strix is gonna be the better value.

2700$ extra for the RTX4090 version? That’s crazy. Great review and honestly great temperatures. There is no way a CPU could be healthy after years of going for 100 degrees Celsius. So it’s really nice to see a beast staying at 80 degrees Celsius. If Asus was able to make it, the others should be able to as well. My only concern is if the heat pipes are the same or not on the cheaper 4080Ti version.

They put long radiator at the back part, but sadly bottom vents are minimal, if they open the bottom vents near that area, at least some cooling pads could act as an "active" cooling fan for that long radiator.
This needs to be the norm. Everyone is going smaller 13/14 inch laptops. I've been dying for a larger screen. With how thin the designs are, you can easily have, like this, a 18/19 inch laptop and still be smaller than your older 17s. I would like to see this continue as the bezels get smaller.
The screen needs to be experienced first hand to appreciate it. Mine has zero backlight bleed. I finally got mine today with a 4090 and the 13980HX. Upgraded storage to a 8TB MP600 Pro NH and a 118GB P1600X Optane and Memory to a 96GB kit. Kitting it out with a Wisecoco 14 inch ultrawide portable monitor with a custom mount that puts it on the top of the integrated monitor. Also 2 Innoview 18 inch portable monitors that seem to be using the same panel only limited to 60hz, in the backpack to have a proper workstation wherever I can set up on a table.
I really appreciate the specviewperf tests, it's part of what I need since I do development, and the performance of typical operations is more important than raw rendering because while I will spend hours rendering every second I spend on the program will be spent looking at the thing run

The Lenovo Legion 7 from last year is still pretty good and probably at a discounted price. I would say pull the trigger if you can find last year's model at a good price. And ASUS doesn't have the best quality control. I bought one about 6 months ago and it was a headache. Screen flickering, wifi card disconnection issues and an overheating power adapter which caused throttling when played more than 45 minutes. And worst of all was their customer service, they were no help to me. And I discovered that there's many people with stories like mine or worse. ASUS is good on paper and the price is competitive but they don't have a strong reputation on their quality control so it's riskier to order from them than anyone else. Good luck if you buy from them.
@@SeemsLogical I have the exact opposite experience. For me Asus provided the best user experience and I just cannot go back to any other windows brand .
@@SeemsLogical I guess it really depends by region/country on customer service. Here in the Philippines, they really have an excellent customer service but I do agree about QC, it's about average.
@@sakamoto8354 It's a flip of the coin whether an ASUS laptop is a good quality or is defective. Personally I want better odds than a 50/50 chance for something so expensive. And I was understating ASUS' customer service quality. Unhelpful was putting it nicely. In my case they flatly told me it was not their responsibility to fix it and pointed me to head back to the retailer. The retailer (again) told me it was ASUS' responsibility but gave me a copy of their company warranty to show them, so after emailing the retailers warranty to them they reluctantly agreed to help me... And they proceeded to play phone tag with me telling me to call different departments several times. They did eventually tell me that they would see about fixing it at one of their tech centers but due to a high influx of warranty claims it would be a minimum of a month before I can expect a full repair. I then suggested to take it to a local repair shop to get it fixed sooner but said that would void the warranty. This was 3 weeks after purchase so I just said "fuck this" and went for a full refund. I got charged a restocking fee but got most of my money back... And spent it with Lenovo instead. and Lenovo has treated me really well. I hope your ASUS remains good because if it does start to fail you'll see first hand what I meant when I said ASUS was not helpful in my case.

Much love!
I actually think you might be better off with the previous gen because it seems as if there is not much of a performance difference between 4060 and 3060 laptop graphic cards. And at the prices you mentioned, you can only realistically get such laptops
@@love2k380 I'm not familiar with ryzen cpu's so i'm not sure if it's a good deal or not, but hearing 16 gb of ram, 3060, and half a terabyte of storage, i think that's a great deal being under 1000 dollars but u should ask someone who knows more than me
Jarrod can you do a video ranking the warranty services of all the major laptop brands? These machines are not cheap so it's important for some people to know what companies stand by their products and which companies try to cut ties as soon as they get your money. Most of us are too lazy/busy to look them all up ourselves.
Adding on to that: some third parties/stores also offer their own warranty programs for these things, like Best Buy, Microsoft selling laptops apparently, and I don’t know who else. Would be a nice addition to the video.
@@levygaming3133 NewEgg I think falls in with them too. When I had problems with my ASUS laptop they told me NewEgg was responsible when it was technically ASUS' jurisdiction. That whole experience is partly why I asked Jarrod to cover it as it's rarely spoken about.
Warranty or after sale service really vary between regions even with the same brand. How laws are enforced, and how the brand treat specific region, and how available are labor and components all make difference. It depends where you live.
Random note, in some regions you get 2tb+2tb in RAID 0, and in other regions (like the US), you only get 1tb+1tb in RAID 0. And apparently, in some regions you only get 1x 1tb without RAID.
A little warning to those thinking about getting the budget alternative strix g18: the version with almost the same specs as the base scar 18 model is $1000 more than the scar 18. So if you plan on spending around 4k for a laptop, go for the scar instead of the g18 if you plan on going all out in their spec.
Great Review! I've been using my Scar 18 RTX 4090 for about a week now and here are my thoughts: Termals are great. Like Jarrod said, GPU is in the 60s and CPU are in between 70-83c range. Absolutely great. Almost no screen bleed on my unit. Coil Whine is veeery minimal when you start a game or heavy program but I cannot hear it once the fans kick in or the sound from the game/movie etc starts. So no problems with the coil whine. Fan noise is definitely not as bad as shown in the video on Performance/Turbo/Manual modes. The mic just makes it sound that way. My touchpad has none of the issues Jarrod mentioned so I guess it's a unit problem. Overall amazing laptop. Screen, performance, thermals, noise everything is just great.

@@jabbahiggs7039 The Coil whine is either quiet 'high pitch' noise and by quiet I mean I have to put my ear close the the keyboard or the bzz noise but again I hav eto get close to it and once the fans or audio from the game starts it fades out. The fan noise is honestly not bad even on Turbo. It's not the high pitch noise but more like 'whoosh' kind of a sound. Just hearing the air going out without being loud or high. Very good for me personally and I as well am sensitive to both problems but both don't bother me.
Hi mate I got the scar 18 and i dont have the same results. My CPU is always aboce 90 degrees when i m playing Have you touch anything to have such good results ?
I got a chuckle out of there being an air intake by the WASD keys. Just a design coincidence I'm sure ;) I'm overdue for a laptop update, my old laptop if from the 10X0 era and its suffering from a badly bulged battery so I've quit using it - it's not worth repairing. Whether I get this one or a slightly more modest laptop I'd best start saving up my pennies - and dollars.
This is by far the closest in 2023 so far, but lack of F key lighting just kills me. It's extra upsetting because this has good latencymon so would be great for my audio production work, but my DAW software makes heavy use of function keys and I work in a low light room. I don't understand why Asus have done this.
I am using the non-scar version for audio and it sucks so far for me. can't disable speedstep so low latency performance is all pops and clicks. Hoping i'm just missing something.
or just buy a gt77 which I did. Not gonna put lights on and change my entire workflow for a laptop. How about you stop being condescending instead.@@tfuu5144
Yep! Since they seem the least insane priced high end and probably without this silly power throttling too. The 16" Tongfang is almost half the price of this one here and early notebookcheck figures suggest its much faster, probably bc of the water cooling dock
Hopefully not too much longer. Unfortunately, there were issues with the first set I got, so they all had to be sent back. Expecting to receive the replacements soon.
My only problem with this model is the design language. Asus has a problem with providing chic and powerful devices every year. Their zephyrus S lineup serves to this niche but they are seem to prioritizing the Duo series. I love the overall package here; however I'd prefer to have a 165hz oled rather than a 240hz ips. Plus a metal body is more fitting for the fortune that they are asking for. I like retro style translucent designs but I'm not exactly a big fan of it.
I prefer the current design over what you describe. Enough that I chose this machine over the Blade 18. With my installed upgrades it's a 7K USD machine and I prefer plastic to metal and IPS over OLED. I want this machine to last and those choices ensure longevity.
Damn now that is what we wanna see. This is an actual beast. Well done ASuS. . All that (170-175 watt GPU) super performance and still cool in internals. %49 difference will be even more at 4k (Which by now default for me). I like to game with speakers of laptop so I would probably pick turbo mode for lower fan noice i guess of course as long as %1 lows are like in graphs and not like blade's. And thanks to God ASuS laptops with same specs always significantly cost less than MSi laptops in my country.

Thank you for another excellent, in depth review! Question.... Which would you take between the Razer Blade 18 and the Scar 18, assuming both are using the RTX 4080?
15:00 what does it mean by ASUS has enabled overdrive by default? Without enabling overdrive we see a drastic decrease in response times and possibly lower refresh rates too? Overdriving from what I know also reduces the life span of the PC and may introduce certain unwelcoming artefacts on the display. I'm tied between this ASUS SCAR 18 & MSI GE67HX 3080Ti that has beautiful and very snappy OLED 240HZ display hence can someone please clarify my overdrive question?
How does the Scar 18 „performance” mode compare to Blade 18 „balanced” mode in terms of fan noise? Which one does have a lower, more pleasant noise profile? My current Asus Flow X13 is killing me, the high pitch fan noise is very unpleasant. 😵💫
Great review Jarrod! Will you be reviewing the new msi ge78 raider anytime soon? I've learned to not get excited about a new Asus Scar laptop. I tried to get one 1.5 years ago, and they were sold out immediately. Never restocked. It's hard to buy something when it's not available anywhere.
I have same laptop 32.0 GB ram edition. Tested ton of games, only had problems with Star Citizen which is poorly optimized, on max setting 4k resolution it could run only on 50+ fps... Rest games runs minimum on 120+ fps. I only have 2 problems, but I think it is most of from software. Sometimes it makes static noises on battery and GPU switching system is not really good. At the end it is superb laptop, the sound is awesome, it even have bases, screen is nice. Build quality is very nice. I think it is best option for people who travel a lot.
i got a g733zw last year, pretty happy with it, as long you can accept some asus software that often needs to be worked around, wish the keystone was another usb port, its good they fixed that
Your reviews are much better than most but lack the same central aspect as most: What reasonably fast speeds and reasonably low dB noise value and noise sample are there? Your test mentions and samples CPU+GPU stress test as 38dB Silent (way too slow) or 50dB (way too loud). The huge gap shows that there must be much potential to tame noise at roughly 2/3 speed. However, we can only guess: is such near 38dB (good purchase) or 50dB (no purchase)? The wide range of RTX configuration of TDP demands related testing for every notebook! --robert jasiek
4060 Vs 3060 should be interesting. There needs to be a obvious generational jump, and considering the 3070 Vs 4070 debacle, maybe at the lower end there is a gap. Prices are still up, but that's inflation and Nvidia being greedy. Great review.
Hello! Freezers and stutters in all games, need to wait bios update, or version with new bios...Ill checck a lot of info, about this model, gizmoslip tech, and 2 users told about this problems, only disable e-cores and HT, helps...
Better in almost every way compared with last years 17 model (I bought both based on Jarrods reviews), except for the sound, that has moved round the back of the laptop and sounds boxy and slightly muffled compared to last years model. Not a deal breaker as this knocks Cyberpunk 2077 (Patch 1.62 - Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode) out of the park, and like most I use headphones anyway. The larger squarer screen feels much bigger as I dont use an exernal monitor, particularly good aspect ratio for Total War: Warhammer III and other strategy games. The heat goes out the back rather than the sides and all the ports are on ether side rather than on the back, which is an improvment. The keyboard feels nicer for some reason than last years model. Overall, well worth £4000.
Hey Jarrod, can you make a video explaining how to separate the Raid 0 into 2 separate Drives for the 2 SSDs? Also with the new Bios Undervolting is now available, so the results will be completely different If you can test them when you have the time!
It's odd not to see laptops with vapor chambers. I wonder myself if it results ineffective, unneeded, or is just about a matter of maintain price as down as possible...
They said that the Vapour chamber wasn’t working during development and wouldn’t allow the CPU to clock up to 6ghz the liquid inside starts to boil and become completely ineffective so by using normal copper it gave very good results while maintaining the superb performance.
@@KREYO_ZA after gain some experience with vapor chamber laptops, Asus shouldn't expect to get faster frecuencies in cpu without a higher heatsink and more fans and more "room", perhaps with liquid cooling or thicker laptops (with thicker heatsinks). After all, vapor chamber helps to use the laptop complete heatsink faster and evenly, in place of use more the right part of the heatsink for CPU and the left part for gpu. But heat watts exhausted remains the same capacity (copper amount, fans and room), with disadvantage side effect of rise temperatures of the unused gpu while is working cpu or viceversa. So thin is a very bad idea if we seek "so powerful" too. I hope this turns a fact after a few years when warranties start executing with so thin & powerful laptops.
At this price so much plastic and wobble is unacceptable for me. It's not like they try to reduce weight, since it's already a heavy laptop so why not use some metal at least at the frames and maybe between the screen hinges and the base so that it doesn't wobble like jelo when typing?
I think I'm fine with my 2022 Legion 7 (the AMD model) for games, but interesting to see the improvements in performance... And of course, the higher price!

Does the Asus Strix Scar 18 laptop have that rubberized coating on the area where you rust your hands? My old Lenovo had that rubberized coating that started to scratch off.
This is by far the best review for a 4090 laptop I've seen in my opinion. One down side for Asus's products is their software has always been the weak spot. Though they never upset me when it comes to new laptop choices like new 240hz QHD 16:10 ratio screen or newest i9 hx series cpus. I believe they will unlock limit for the RAM very soon. I would really like to see a comparison between GE78HX with 4090 against scar 18 since both have very similar spec (I think MSI does took serious concern with the laptop market before choosing their hardware this year).

Never really commented on a vid before but thought I would give this a try since you write and produce great reviews Jarrod. I and others that have bought the new strix scar line have run into an issue with black screens when changing from the very wonderful hdr option the new 2023 line gives you. Wondered if you could recreate this issue with any of the strix scar 16's or 18's if you still have a review unit. They do quite well with the included nvidia driver that it comes with but once you upgrade the driver it will drop you into a black screen that you cannot get out of on the new drivers in certain instances while switching from sdr and hdr. The nebula screens that asus have are a treat and love the power of the 4080 that I purchased to make it worth it so not gonna give it up but looking for some solid info if someone else could vet this issue. Several others on the ROG forums have concluded its a software issue that is persistent across the brand with the nebula screens
Congrats on your purchase. I'm just curious if you were able to resolve this issue? Since you've had a chance to play around with this rig have you had any other issues or things that you've liked or disliked? I would like to hear all of the good and bad. Thanks!
Do you have any plans to specifically review the 4K 4090 version of the Razer Blade 16? Really interested in it, but waiting for some reviews on it. I saw some reviewer suggest that the contrast ratio on it was anywhere from 25000:1 to 44000:1, and I’d definitely like to see if that’s true or if they just did the test wrong.
Hello Jarrod hope you're doing well and find this comment. I was wondering if you think that the results here are also representative of the smaller Strix Scar 16, with an RTX 4080 instead. I'm planning to buy one here in the Philippines. It costs 3200 USD. Thanks
MSI still has a 17.3” 16:9. Don’t remember what it was though. Are you sure you don’t like 16:10 screens? I could see 3:2 being more divisive, but most of these 16:10 laptops are just mostly the same as the 16:9 models but with the screen expanded down 16:1 to replace the sizable chins they had. You get more vertical space for scrolling through text and stuff without narrowing the screen. Plus my personal favorite, it lets the screen be bigger when viewing 4:3 content like classic TV shows and some games.
Is single thunderbolt a platform/chipset limitation? Feels like there were more options with 2 ports last year and everything this year is single TB port. Was hoping for 2 in this massive form factor.
Not many options on BIOS as usual but i think it's okay. But no official XMP profile support? Kinda sad and i think it's the only issue i see on this laptop despite its cost 🤔

Strix G18 inside is almost the same as G16.
Scar for 4090 as Strix G18 does not have a 4090 option. Scar has 6 speakers vs 4 for G18. But yes otherwise G18 is cheaper and just as good

It's the same. Only thing that's changed are the 4070 and below options which don't have that liquid metal applied to the GPU according to Asus.

Can I ask about the noise? How does the coil whine sound? Is this a high pitch whine sound or more like an electrical bzz mid -range sound?
And how does the fan noise sound to you ears? Does it emit any unpleasant high pitch noises?
They put long radiator at the back part, but sadly bottom vents are minimal, if they open the bottom vents near that area, at least some cooling pads could act as an "active" cooling fan for that long radiator.
This needs to be the norm. Everyone is going smaller 13/14 inch laptops. I've been dying for a larger screen. With how thin the designs are, you can easily have, like this, a 18/19 inch laptop and still be smaller than your older 17s. I would like to see this continue as the bezels get smaller.
Yes, this is the screen size I want, too.
Theres always two reasons to look forward to your videos... the content itself and which band is on your shirt this time :)

Linux test is such a small and yet a very nice touch.... This and few other small details makes your reviews a head and shoulder above the rest....
Last year, I wanted Lenovo Legion 7, this year, I want ASUS Scar 18. Can't wait to see what I'll want (and won't get) next year 🙃
There is no Advanced Optimus in that Strix

I'm getting a laptop soon and I can't decide between the MSI GP 66/3070 or Lenovo Legion 5 pro/3060. Any suggestions?
I actually think you might be better off with the previous gen because it seems as if there is not much of a performance difference between 4060 and 3060 laptop graphic cards. And at the prices you mentioned, you can only realistically get such laptops
@Mankhraw Marbaniang The msi GP 66 does not have a mix switch so I would recommend the Lenovo
18:54 I don't think the laptop has been out long enough for its speaker drivers to be upstreamed into the Linux kernels, hence why they didn't work.

Bro compare the 16 and 18 inch ROG SCAR laptop in terms of performance , display choice and Specially Noise levels
Did the coil whine get fixed or is it still there. I'm going to buy this laptop as I do game design and a freelancer artist.
Great Review! I've been using my Scar 18 RTX 4090 for about a week now and here are my thoughts:
Termals are great.

Can I ask about the noise? How does the coil whine sound? Is this a high pitch whine sound or more like an electrical bzz mid -range sound?
And how does the fan noise sound to you ears? Does it emit any unpleasant high pitch noises? I have sensitive hearing and those high pitch noises make my head ache.

I'm overdue for a laptop update, my old laptop if from the 10X0 era and its suffering from a badly bulged battery so I've quit using it - it's not worth repairing.
Expecting to receive the replacements soon.
wow it is weird to spend this much money on a lapotop to have a this much screen shake. Nice review as always with a static tone level :D
And thanks to God ASuS laptops with same specs always significantly cost less than MSi laptops in my country.

depending on your budget buddy
With Razer you get the Alienware treatment of paying extra just for the name.

Will they bring the mini led screen to the 18 this year ?!

Thanks!
Why wouldn't they add dedicated forward, stop, reverse, play keys if they are going to add audio keys?
Do you have any plans to specifically review the 4K 4090 version of the Razer Blade 16? Really interested in it, but waiting for some reviews on it. I saw some reviewer suggest that the contrast ratio on it was anywhere from 25000:1 to 44000:1, and I’d definitely like to see if that’s true or if they just did the test wrong.
thaaaaanks, your reviews are great
THANK YOU for this review Jarrods :)
Can we assume the Scar 16 performs the same as the Scar 18 given the TDP is the same?
But I think the bigger, the better for cooling system
It seems, but temps can be worse. But still cooling systems are the same in both.
Didn't HP make and 18 inch laptop a while back think it was called the HP HDX or something like that.
Hello Jarrod hope you're doing well and find this comment.
I was wondering if you think that the results here are also representative of the smaller Strix Scar 16, with an RTX 4080 instead. I'm planning to buy one here in the Philippines. It costs 3200 USD. Thanks
"F*ckin magnets! How do they work?"
Fun aside, I love to see easy release\easy connect magnetic parts on PC hardware.
When the 16 version will came out?
Every damn laptop is gonna be 16:10 now...?
Are there still 16:9 ones? I don't like "squarer" looking laptops nowadays.
I'm honestly interested in cheaper 4050 series laptops . At least I can buy 3060 laptops after launch of 4050 laptops
I think 3060 can last for 4-5 years later. It's the best deal that we can get so far
Not many options on BIOS as usual but i think it's okay. But no official XMP profile support? Kinda sad and i think it's the only issue i see on this laptop despite its cost 🤔
I'm looking at the ROG Strix G16/17/18 as being my first gaming laptop but I hate fan noise! It looks like this has the best cooling but if I kept it in Silent mode and gamed? Would it downclock so much I'd be sacrificing a lot of the gaming power I paid for? It also looks like the large the laptop, the better cooling - is this true? As the G16 is more my price range 😅
I know they're pretty similar but can you do a review of the 16" model with mini LED and 4090? That's the one I ordered and I don't see many videos of it just the 18"
Great review 👌🏽. Waiting for your MSI version review to make my final purchase decision. Any plans to show the diff between the 4080 and 4090 within the same shell?
need this!
That keyboard and monitor flex looks pretty substantial to me.
Hi Jarrod, are you planning on doing a review for the Strix G16/Scar 16 as well? Great content!
Hey Jarrod, thanks for the amazing review as always. There's been a rumor about coil whining of this machine. Is this true?
It is true, the first time I heared the noise from my machine I thought there's a bee live inside the laptop.
If you want to see the Fn keys in a dark room, just bend down the screen to lighten them up 🙃
Gaming laptop hacks 😂
