A rare instance of the walking sim/horror game that actually has fully modelled, voiced and animated NPCs. That alone is enough to sell me on this type of game. Really refreshing to see. So tired of the decades of these types of games where everyone's already dead/missing, and you're the lone survivor. Will definitely check it out when I get the chance.

Unfortunately, the NPCs look like they are from a ps2 game( and parts of the environment). I think this game would be an all-time great if it had a consistent visual appearance. This is a game that is clearly limited by the budget and in certain scenes looks great but the lack of consistency in the visuals and side npcs really takes away from the emersion in the game and story. I think they should have just lowered the overall graphics/ fidelity to stay consistent. At the same time, even when this game does have graphically impressive scenes, they still are not at say Alan Wake 2 level. All that being said, I think if this game had AAA visual production values it would be amazing. The story, pacing, voice acting, and level design are all great. I don't understand the part about replayability. You replay a game because you want to relive the experience/story again. No need for things in the game to change, although it's a nice plus (personally though, i tend to make the same choices, if i liked how my previous playthrough felt, that's the reason i replay it after all). It's like with a movie - you watch it again, because you want to experience it again, maybe a year later.
This generation of games usually want that kind of replayability where things play out differently or you can go back and collect things you’ve missed. I’m with you though, I grew up playing video games over and over and over again almost exactly the same just for the experience. My favorite game of all time is Shadow of the Colossus and there is a very, very limited ways to play that game, or to mention once you e experienced the game once, that’s it, you’ll never have that same level of wonder again. But I still love it to death and have replayed it, along with its remaster and remake countless times. But I like that ACG points out that you aren’t exactly getting a multiple choice, save certain characters, multiple endings type of deal here. It’s transparent and it helps some people make their choice. I will most likely give the game another go in the future. The setting and atmosphere were fantastic.
Yah not every game needs to be infintly replayable. Personally I prefer to finish something and then move on with my life, I don't need to put 1000 hours into every game I play.
If Chinese Room could combine its obvious talent for immersion, writing, detail and voice work with the gameplay and exploration of something like an Alien Isolation then we would have game of the year contenders. The almost brutal realism of this game just adds to the horror and some scenes are genuinely disturbing and not in that "fun" horror way. You can clearly see the influence of Carpenters The Thing with the body horror but also with the tension, banter and the isolation.
Really curious how this was developed alongside Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2. Did they make most of this before taking on the job or did development start after? Just finished the game, you do “hide” from the monsters but it felt more like a safe zone in a game of tag. Haven’t played the quarry, but if it’s like until dawn, it’s less of having a set group of characters that get picked off and more like going around the rig and seeing/meeting survivors and having them die or have them already dead, but you do have a brief pre-disaster part where your character interacts with others where you somewhat get to know them, at least by name.

I loved the setting and characters. The voice actors absolutely crushed it. The most tense situations were inside the depths of the rig in areas you aren't supposed to go to. Absolutely worst part for me was the creature design. Once you've seen one bloated human monster with tendrils, you've seen them all. Throw spanner to the other side of the room, complete objective and exit with a chase scene down a corridor. Not a bad four hours but I definitely wouldn't recommend buying it for a full price. Like ACG said, it's a great gamepass title.
i agree with most points of this review. The game definitely won't change game design principles or your life, but it's a really fun 6 hours. For being on game pass, it's great!
Only just started the game but I can tell it’s gonna be good already. No overwhelming the player with complicated game mechanics and backstory, extremely immersive, easy to follow, detailed world. Loving it so far.
Very interested in this game. Oil rigs and horror go together like peas and carrots, can’t believe no one has done it before. At least to my knowledge. Time to find out what Karak thought of it.
The game is great not perfect, I love the fact its set on a oil rig that's very original for a horror survival/sim usually these types of games are set in space stations and that settings done to death. I just wish it had more of a dead space gaming mechanic were you use engineering tools as weapons. If they had spent a bit longer flushing out this game it could of been a horror classic.
It "plays" better as it has more Gameplay, which work mostly fine. Storywise, it lacks quite significantly the momentum and "depth". If you like the previous games, this should be good enough.
Just beat the game after buying it on PlayStation. Seem to be some graphics issues where the game didn’t register some commands or button prompts wouldn’t trigger right. But I loved it zero regrets buying it I plan to platinum it which is rare. I haven’t platinum a game in couple years.
I thought it was bordering on mediocre. It looks and sounds good, but even in those aspects, there are issues. The story was weak due to how cliche it was, and how it doesn't give you a lot to care about the characters. The voice work was excellent, but the writing was poor because of how repetitive, unoriginal, and, at times, melodramatic it was (with the music only worsening it). I generally don't mind if a horror game isn't scary, but this game had zero scare factor, be it tenseness or even jump scares. You're also always walking or running linearly through the game with minimal chance to go off the beaten path and you rarely collect anything to expand on the story or characters. It's pretty much just climbing, jumping, some swimming, shimmying, hitting switches, and throwing items to the opposite end of a room to divert an enemy's attention so you can move on with several short bursts of running toward a door or access point to get away from them. I also thought it was weird how many loading points there were to enter a new area. Not that the loading was long, but it felt jarring like it didn't belong in this generation of gaming. The enemy design is cool and grotesque, but we've seen it before. The story felt as if it was written by a middle-of-the-road high school student. This was also probably the worst game where the story relies on your character continuously being asked to do every single job because another character can't. Throughout, your interactions with characters are mostly "Hey, I need you to go do this" and your guy saying, "Ah, feck!" Why me? You do it! I ain't doing it!" Then they say "You have to!" And you go do it. Many will want subtitles, and take note that they don't match the slang/lingo spoken, which I found interesting. I somehow got an achievement for not sprinting more than ten times throughout the game, but I know that can't be true.
Way too many games on the backburner to pick this up at the moment. Would be nice to evolve the walking sim genre a bit at this point. A neat mechanic, light gunplay, or making choices that matter would all go a long way to engage the player. Walking from point A to point C then to B for a scripted moment to occur and have this repeat for 10 hours just doesn't cut it anymore for me.
I really enjoyed the game, and could feel throughout, an attention to detail and focus on a smooth experience. Everything from sound design not being to offensive, even in explosions, UI being smooth and simple, great options selection, and very smooth and responsive controls. I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was, a great ocean horror movie that I got to experience. My BIGGEST complaint though is the state of that f***ing oil rig at the start lol. Those decks are so cluttered and disorganized, sooo many walkways and escapes are blocked... they'd have health and safety so far up there bum they'd be a sock puppet.
Great horror adeventure experience indeed! The brilliant voice acting, solid visuals, and amazing sound design is what made is a great experience. That being said, it's extremely linear, with lil to no choices. Definitely worth the ~6 hours for the main story...played on Game Pass.
It actually looks pretty cool, and seems interesting.I believe I will get it down the road though on sale.I got enough to play right now,and the only thing I am buying right now, other than what I have to play already is Elden Ring DLC…
For me, this wasn't so much a game as an interactive movie. And it that context it was one of the most immersive, suspenseful and touching experiences I've had in 45 years of game-play. Uniquely in my view, the voice acting, script, sound and graphics are all very, very strong; no weaknesses, no single one letting the others down. And the attention to detail.. that just blew my mind away. Hardened horror gamers won't be hugely impressed, nor will preferrers of more open-world, choice-driven games. But then again, this isn't a game. It's an experience, and an absolutely top shelf one at that.
Thanks for reviewing this. This one has been intriguing me even more so that I know Chinese room developed it. Do you still do walking the walk videos?
Loved the setting and the horror theme. I wish it was more than a walking sim. But I still enjoyed it. One thing I regret is not interacting with characters early on so I knew what happened to them when I seen bodies later.

There was a series not long ago called The Rig with a similar premise, but it could not keep up the atmosphere more than 3-4 episodes before drowning into the sea of mediocricity. This game looks like what that series could have been.
If you like 70s/80s horror flicks you’ll enjoy this game. It’s More a movie than a game but it is enjoyable. Plus I do hope we’ll see more of the setting maybe in another game.
I’m a little confused, what is this definition of a “walking sim”? I always assumed it’s a game where you mainly just walk without having any puzzles or obstacles or any gameplay to do, but I don’t really think still wakes the Deep falls under that umbrella
Haven't started this review yet but first impression.... The first couple of articles to read bricked me n had to restart the game twice. Annoying when your streaming.
That’s awesome. I don’t know how you bastards do it but y’all are tough, man. This game did me no favors in ever going out to the middle of the ocean to work on a rig, that’s for sure lol.
Yeah man, the voice work was great. I started playing it while my wife was in the kitchen making dinner and she asked me “what are you watching?”. She can usually tell video game dialogue from watching a movie or tv show. We ended up playing the game all the way through and yeah, it’s was fantastic. You can hear the fear and regret in Caz voice.
This game looks like everything I am anxious about. And the graphics look really good. I did not know this existed, so thank you kindly for this introduction.
Dont play it on game pass. The gamepass version has NO DLSS or FSR and and it runs like crap. Game is barely playable without DLSS or FSR. My specs are above recommended and yet i dont get more than 40 fps.
I’m about 90 mins so far and really enjoying it. The location and story are excellent - and it’s refreshing to have a cast of Scottish characters. Horror is great too, the only minor complaints are the navigation and the fact that Caz runs and jumps like an improv actor on meth.
Oh man. The story and location of this game is perfect for an immersive sim like prey. If Arkane would of made a game like that instead of redfall i bet it would of been incredible.
I am The Little Mermaid atop a rock in the ocean, reaching a crescendo, with a perfectly timed hair flip as the waves crash around me. This is my nirvana.
They’re very few and far between I’ll tell you that. It’s mostly like dangling wires and a couple on npc occurrences. I do hope they fix them though, seems like it shouldn’t be too much.

He gave it a positive review. He said buy it if you like walking simulators. Maybe stay away if you don't, because it has a niche audience and it does nothing to reinvent it.
@@Martyjowa Quote "... However, for a gamepass title, where this is available, it is really worth checking out.."... given the "however" context, and the obvious condescension while referring to gamepass; that would imply "wait for sale" to me.
Can you quote for me where he said "buy it if you like walking simulators"? You're really just proving my original point here.
Game Pass baby!
Is it ?
@@TomsTech94yes
Buy your games people
@@bigt4135 😂😂😂😂
@bigt4135 I buy select games but not every new release as if I can play more games that I like for less. Why wouldn't I ? For example, the new assassin's Creed I'd like to try, but I'll just sub to ubi plus for a month to play it
Needs a feature to disable yellow paint
The developers are currently working on it.
it has it now
@@nbaumg Really?!? I stopped playing 20 minutes in because the yellow paint removes all immersion and atmosphere. Time to fire it up!
This is such a cool setting for a game. Surprised it hasn't been done more in the past.
Will check it tomorrow on Game Pass
Thanks for the review
i agree with most points of this review.
Completed it on gamepass. Was ok but i dont think a walking sim will ever hit me as hard as Paratopic has. Its just so incredible.
You need a 4th designation/score - "It's in Gamepass Baby!"
Game pass games should have "Buy, Game Pass, pass" scoring system 😉
Soooo much yellow paint. I swear yellow paint has become the herpes of modern game design
I wish games had the option to turn it down or off. One game I played did but Idr what game that was
@@XvKJP2015 The last Tomb Raider game had the option to turn it off.
This reminds me of Stasis: Bone Totem, which is (imo) more amazing - and not a walking sim
Thank God the crew brought yellow paint with them 😮💨
A modern version of Cold Fear.
I love all the games from The Chinese Room. Is this on the same level or is a less?
If your Question it Just Gamepass. That's what I plan on doing
For better or for worse, it's definitely a Chinese room game.
It’s a change of tone for a Chinese Room game but one with the level of story you’d come to expect from them
It "plays" better as it has more Gameplay, which work mostly fine. Storywise, it lacks quite significantly the momentum and "depth". If you like the previous games, this should be good enough.
@@potatopower7893 really? I thought the storytelling was pretty fantastic. It’s a very well written game.
Nice! Hope they include it on playstation plus or at least discount it heavy so I can enjoy it too. Looks amazing!
Being from the north of Scotland, it’s great to see titles like this appearing. Looks intriguing, will check it out.
It’s even more immersive when your Scottish, how refreshing it is to hear your own accent and slang in a video game🏴
I'll get it on a sale down the line. The Thing is getting a remaster soon too.
I'll re-subscribe to gamepass just for this game.
Loved the setting and the horror theme. I wish it was more than a walking sim. But I still enjoyed it. One thing I regret is not interacting with characters early on so I knew what happened to them when I seen bodies later.
This game looks interesting. It’s on Xbox gamepass so I’ll def give it a try.
Gotta say I’ve been with you since 100 odd k subs and to see you now at 1.2 mill is fantastic!. You’re still under appreciated in my option but so happy to see your numbers growing.
Thanks much!
can't wait for my preorder... even tho this means I'll have to put aside Shadow of the Erdtree and SMT 5 Vengeance for a while... and radiant silver gun coming out on switch also... uhm...
I feel like I literally watched this game play out as a movie before but I don't remember the name of the movie at all
IGN did a review of this game and it has around the same number of views almost 4 times less likes. Great job mate I apricate the actually honest review (unlike IGN) especially as a scotsman myself
i played it today on gamepass and i loved the game. it is totally worth checking out if you have the gamepass. idk abt straight up buying it since the game is short and it doesnt have a lot of replayability. but 100% great game worth playing it sucked me into the story
Sounds like that Amazon horror series "The Rig"
Well, however this review goes, I just purchased this and it is installing at the moment. So I am hoping for a fun time 😜😅
Was it fun?
It is an interesting take for a walking simulation style of game! If these are what you are into...
The voice acting / sound design is what stood out to me. Absolutely on point!
There was a series not long ago called The Rig with a similar premise, but it could not keep up the atmosphere more than 3-4 episodes before drowning into the sea of mediocricity. This game looks like what that series could have been.
If you like 70s/80s horror flicks you’ll enjoy this game. It’s
More a movie than a game but it is enjoyable. Plus I do hope we’ll see more of the setting maybe in another game.
Would be perfect for vr this game
I’m a little confused, what is this definition of a “walking sim”?
I always assumed it’s a game where you mainly just walk without having any puzzles or obstacles or any gameplay to do, but I don’t really think still wakes the Deep falls under that umbrella
LOL at that yellow paint telling you where to go… did the monsters left it to bait the player?
Looks like they took inspiration from The Abyss as well
Haven't started this review yet but first impression.... The first couple of articles to read bricked me n had to restart the game twice. Annoying when your streaming.
Dude I was not expecting this to look so damn fun and claustrophobic Definitely giving this a shot.
This looks cool, I work offshore on a rig. Its cool to see my workplace setting in a game haha
That’s awesome. I don’t know how you bastards do it but y’all are tough, man. This game did me no favors in ever going out to the middle of the ocean to work on a rig, that’s for sure lol.
@@ProjectPhoenix21 30 grand a month helps. Only shitty part is being away from the family
Oh wow this looks really fun. Never even heard of this before
Well you convinced me with your through review. I'll never play this. I can't deal with walking sims. But it is a good graphic game.
One of the things I really appreciated about this one was the dialogue. It’s so realistic.
So basically alien isolation but on an oil rig with the thing mixed with Chuthulu tryna kill u. Sounds fuckin awesome
This game looks like everything I am anxious about. And the graphics look really good. I did not know this existed, so thank you kindly for this introduction.
Maybe I’ve been playing too much cyberpunk 2077 but the graphics quality shown here reminds me of that game. In short I just want more cyberpunk…
Honestly, I loved it for the story alone. It's better than any horror movie I've seen in the past couple years
Good story and characters? Enough said.
Game has a lot of influences. I see The Thing, The Color Out of Space, and Soma and even a dash of Dead Space.
Could you talk about the sudden disappearance of PlayStation Stars?
I’m definitely gonna check this out now! The way you described it made me think of Firewatch and I enjoyed that game very much! Thank you GamePass 😂
I love the setting for this. What a cool concept.
Oh man. The story and location of this game is perfect for an immersive sim like prey. If Arkane would of made a game like that instead of redfall i bet it would of been incredible.
I'm excited for this one especially with game pass
3:05 - This is a fantastic description! 12-year-olds can be scary indeed!
They are HORRIFYING
Not my type of game but the atmosphere is cool
This looks very interesting for sure. I really like the atmosphere and setting. I may end up giving it a shot. Thanks, Karak! God bless and stay safe!
You have nothing to lose but time if you have gamepass. It's free day 1 release.
An oil rig is a great setting for a horror story! Thanks for the review. I'll definitely check this game out. Cheers! //Rick
Agree completely, the acting is superb. It's linear but I don't care. Not every game has to be The Witcher 3.
I'm satisfied with the experience after spending few hours going through this game. Enjoyed it more than Senua II.
How long was your playthrough?
I'm so excited for this one. Just the setting and atmosphere just are so up my alley
Game Pass!
Great Game! Definitely play on game pass or wait for a deep discount. My run was around 4hrs.
I was sold on this game just because of UE5. Looking forward to just looking at this game on PC!
Looks like it should be a vr game. Or would be a good addition to it.
I set my location to New Zealand, still cannot play, Flint Lock releases today too.
Haha, I just tried the same thing but no joy!
Alas! Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, is releasing 18 July.
July 18th not June 😮
I am The Little Mermaid atop a rock in the ocean, reaching a crescendo, with a perfectly timed hair flip as the waves crash around me. This is my nirvana.
Im glad you enjoyed this! I wasn't going to give it a try, but im gonna have to now! Oh the joys of having gamepass!
Hope it's good
It’s not a deal breaker, but it’s a bit jarring how some of the animations appear to be at a lower framerate than the rest of the game.
I noticed this as well. It's common in some games when dealing with fire, but this looks to be all encompassing, which is disappointing and jarring.
They’re very few and far between I’ll tell you that. It’s mostly like dangling wires and a couple on npc occurrences. I do hope they fix them though, seems like it shouldn’t be too much.
i'm gonna start using "unless you're Jesus" in conversations
