5043 storms through Didcot - The Great Britain V (Day 9) 29-04-12

- The final day of the Railway Touring Company's 'The Great Britain V' was to see Tyseley based Castle 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe take control for the run from Bristol to London Paddington.
This run was going to see 5043 take on both Filton and Sapperton banks, with 12 coaches in tow unassisted. This video was supposed to start at Standish Jc, followed by Sapperton and Swindon. However, the weather was awful and we decided to put our safety before 5043. No lack of effort, it was best to play it safe.
Our video is therefore from Didcot Parkway, where 5043 thunders through with a cracking Doppler effect on the whistle.

Absolutely fantastic. The smoke as The Earl emerges from the brick bridge is terrific and catching the doppler on the prolonged whistle is amazing. That's Didcot for you. Thanks for the video.
Thanks again Austin, the weather was atrocious and so played safe at Didcot. The Earl never fails to impress, and has become a favourite of mine just by seeing her this weekend.

Thanks Andy, it was fantastic to stand there and have a Castle thunder through. I remember 70013 passing through on a light engine movement in 2009 with huge whistles between 70013, 5322 and one of the Pannier tanks. Hope this continues!

Great video, i remember the A4s going through Hornsey station as a young trainspotter (getting up to mischief) they used to go some, nothing like a steam loco, this one is steamed up some.
Good to see the Earl going full whack past its sister shed.
Ive found all GWR steamers give a prolonged whistle past didcot. Nice to see the comaradery.
Brilliant shot James, bet your glad I was nowhere around :-) Didcot looked very 'quiet' compared to Exeter on Saturday, looks like you had plenty of space to set up & got a great result!! I need to get up early this Saturday to try for 5043 & 4965 heading to Llandudno but that could also be weather dependent..... fingers crossed!

Thank you, Didcot is a location which I adore, and I would love to visit more often. Sadly, I cannot afford to travel that far every few weeks. I hope there are more opportunities to film GWR steam at Didcot in the near future.

Thanks Andre. I must admit, before I started filming properly, I was not a fan of the GWR, but the two Kings and 5043 have really changed my opinion.

Yes, there were very few around, it got to a point when I thought it had passed through already (quite something considering I arrived 25 minutes before 5043 was due). I think it was down to the rain, I was tempted not to go to be honest, but thought it would be pretty spectacular with the smoke. Good luck with the double header, the weather looks cold but dry. I will look out for your video.

Thanks Andy for commenting. Ah that's a shame. Sadly, I can't see that happening for quite a while. VT have quite a few tours up in the north in the future, and have heard little in the way of tours down this way. Hopefully, we can see 5043 again in the near future.
