Sorry Rob! The first western engine I saw was as a youngster on a school day trip from Leicester to Liverpool.we came through Birmingham and parked in the opposite platform was a "Manor" resplendent in green, copper and brass.As an LMS fan, I had to admit it was about the most elegant piece of machinery I had ever seen. I still think that they have a balance, and symmetry that is unsurpassed.
GARY HESS, I think it was beyond the Victorians and Edwardians to make something which was less than beautiful, even a sewage pumping station had to have elegance!

Made me smile and say "wow!" Took me back to the late 50's when I lived near the old GWR (BR by then) line between Swansea and Llanelli. We used to see dozens of steam loco's every day. I lived near a section of the line which had a gradient and lots of the trains had a "banker" on the back to push them up the hill. The process of synchronising the start at Gowerton North was accompanied by whistles and the sound of the bank engine speeding up as wheels slipped. On winter nights the sparks coming out of the funnels were quite spectacular and in the summer were responsible for brush fires near the track. Happy days, thanks.
Saw Bristol Temple Meads on a 2-week "civilian" tour of the UK, June 1984. Left the tour that night to make recordings & met the Royal Mail postmaster who gave me a guided tour of the facilities, including the infamous bridge seen in the pan. I was there half the night, & even became pen pals w/the postmaster. Got a gorgeous tape of a Class 08 shunting, around midnight. Built 1840, in continuous 24-hour use since then. Rule Britannia.
As a little lad mesmerised by steam locomotives I spent many hours at the London termini and at Old Oak Common, Nine Elms and Willesden sheds. Part of the attraction was the names given to the locomotives; I was particularly enthralled by the names allocated to the Duchesses of the LMS and the Kings o the GWR which, for me at least, added to the glamour of the engine. I mean 'City of Wells' sounds so much more impressive than just plain old 'Exeter'. I was less than impressed when it was decided to rename two of the Castle class locos of the GWR 'Sir Edward Elgar' and 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe'. For me, some o the magic had dissipated particularly in the case of the Earl which at the time was allocated to Old Oak Common so that our paths crossed frequently. I understand that 5043 was highly regarded by drivers and more than one told me that it was a very strong and fast locomotive which unfortunately did nothing to allay my youthful displeasure

Beautiful train! I only wish the Venice-Simplon Orient Express would have had a steam engine pulling it when I was on it in 2014, instead of electric!! These old cars are so elegant. This engine reminds me of my short ride along the San Francisco Embarcadero on the Flying Scotsman when Pegler brought it to tour California....
Watch the Film "Murder on the Orient Express" of 1974 vintage showing you a Steam Engine pulling Orient Express Coaches. Over here, we had the lovely old "Pullman Coaches". One such Train went from Swansea to London Paddington with 8 Coaches, and usually a Castle Class Engine from Swansea, Changed at Cardiff for a King or Brittania Class. "King's"were not allowed passed Cardiff to Swansea line, as they Knackered up the end of Bridgend Station once!Those were the days!
...how I wish here in the states we card for and preserved more of our incredible stream locomotives. I can't wait until travel is open again and hope to time my visit when some of these magnificent beasts are in action.
On British rails today the name of the game is speed. The lines are so busy it's worth sacrificing the wasted coal and water to keep the fire mass high, so they can get up to speed as quickly as possible. As the lines keep getting busier and busier it's harder for railtours to find gaps in the timetable. Rail traction has come a long way in terms of acceleration since 1922

Was happy with my duffle bag and shiphams paste salmon spread butties and a flask of coffee made with milk that my mam made ,and my train books sat on lots of different stations in all weather's waiting for the next locomotives number to copy .would still be doing it today if they hadn't scrapped them.at the end saw them one day only to be scrapped the next week happy memories when all I had to worry about was staying out of sight from the station master

Remember these as a lad in the 60s at Paddington Stn the engines were always spotlessly clean, i did work with a guy who was a fireman on the GWR, and he said some drivers rinsed the coal on journeys.

The Castle's are tender engines. British standard gauge steam ended officially in August 1968 but the Vale of Rheidol narrow gauge railway continued running.

As youngsters in Ireland, mon ami, we always loved it when the trains passed by at a leisurely rate, as it provided us a great chance to bounce a few ripe tomatoes off some of the pork-pie-faced blokes who stuck their mugs out the window/door openings. Mon Dieu, what fun. ESPECIALLY if they were holding a pint a' bitters that they then dropped! Ho-Ho-Ho!...as Monsieur Santa would say.

I like in Bristol and heritage trains are not uncommon in the carriage sidings in tm main platforms and my cycle commute takes me over the tmd where they steam up in the mornings can smell it a mile off
Superb video, really great stuff ... I am only sorry for one thing Why don't the camermen not put some kinf od "muffler" over the micropnone(s) ... The noise of the wind in the mic is verry annoying and disturbing. it drowns out the sound ot the actual locomotive. ... Do not misunderstand me, but I am sure you can see what I mean
The four cylinder Castle and King class GWR 4-6-0s had two sets of Walschaert's valve gear inside the frames. The outer cylinder valves were driven by a rocker from the inside. th-cam.com/video/r4kN5GKCjNM/w-d-xo.html
@@RogersRamblings I do wonder why the GWR was so fixated on having valve gear inside the frames, it must have caused a lot of problems. At Swindon you can walk under Caerphilly Castle and see all the valve gear, and it's an awesome sight.
@@JimTLonW6 From what I read (many years ago) it was in the interests of keeping the outward appearance clean and tidy. The same reason as the various pipes were under the cladding.
The Earl was'nt flat out, their top speed would have been around 110mph flat chat. But just loved the echo of the Earl leaving Bristol. Its a pity they cant run faster than 75, no wonder they get the raspberry for holding up commercial traffic.
+Jim Young Flat out (i.e. at the maximum sustainable steam rate) on the level with a Castle hauling 9 is about 83, probably a little more with a good double chimney loco like 5043. Nowhere near 110. I doubt if even an A4 could do that.
+Rosie6857 May be you wouldn't remember the Cornish Riviera and Cheltenham Flyer in the 30s these were run at speeds of 85-95 mph on a scheduled run, in fact it was the fastest scheduled train in the world at the time. Those engines did'nt have the superheating and double chimneys, that came later if the earl was allowed to flat chat it would eaily hit the 100
+Jim Young The Cheltenham Flyer was only 7 coaches and was hauled by Castles, all of which had superheating from the word go. The best high-speed run I can find with a Castle was on May 9 1964 with Ocean Mail celebratory run. 7029 (double chimney) ran mile after mile at a steady 90 mph across the Somerset Levels. To do a steady 100 mph would need 25-30% more steam and the loco simply cannot produce it that quickly whatever the firing rate.
they wer,nt superheated from the word go there are still 2 castles that are single chimneyed and still only 1 stage superheat the Earl and such locos had all the bells and whistles

bmwnasher...Coal is still rinsed before and during Journeys..on GC it is regular..keeps dust down etc..

The GWR were the greatest high speed engines of their time. A "King" class never appeared in Chester and I still haven't seen one to this day.

Oh yeah. Because "rinsing the coal" and getting it wet so it doesn't burn as hot or as rapidly makes for cleaner exhaust. You bet.
I think you'll find that the idea of rinsing (slacking) the coal was to stop all the dust blowing around the footplate
That is exactly why they wet the coal. Otherwise the dust can be a nuisance.

@@RogersRamblings I do wonder why the GWR was so fixated on having valve gear inside the frames, it must have caused a lot of problems. At Swindon you can walk under Caerphilly Castle and see all the valve gear, and it's an awesome sight.
@@JimTLonW6 From what I read (many years ago) it was in the interests of keeping the outward appearance clean and tidy. The same reason as the various pipes were under the cladding.

The Earl was'nt flat out, their top speed would have been around 110mph flat chat. But just loved the echo of the Earl leaving Bristol. Its a pity they cant run faster than 75, no wonder they get the raspberry for holding up commercial traffic.
+Jim Young Flat out (i.e. at the maximum sustainable steam rate) on the level with a Castle hauling 9 is about 83, probably a little more with a good double chimney loco like 5043. Nowhere near 110. I doubt if even an A4 could do that.
+Rosie6857 May be you wouldn't remember the Cornish Riviera and Cheltenham Flyer in the 30s these were run at speeds of 85-95 mph on a scheduled run, in fact it was the fastest scheduled train in the world at the time. Those engines did'nt have the superheating and double chimneys, that came later if the earl was allowed to flat chat it would eaily hit the 100
+Jim Young The Cheltenham Flyer was only 7 coaches and was hauled by Castles, all of which had superheating from the word go. The best high-speed run I can find with a Castle was on May 9 1964 with Ocean Mail celebratory run. 7029 (double chimney) ran mile after mile at a steady 90 mph across the Somerset Levels. To do a steady 100 mph would need 25-30% more steam and the loco simply cannot produce it that quickly whatever the firing rate.
they wer,nt superheated from the word go there are still 2 castles that are single chimneyed and still only 1 stage superheat the Earl and such locos had all the bells and whistles
