Open the vent on top of the dash and it will stop the suction effect. Don't fold the right hand mirror in because it will contact the brake leaver on a turn.

    • @mnewstadt1

Confirming the right hand mirror... was moving the bike about folded the mirror to squeeze between a post and a vehicle... then went 50 feet or so and turned left.... thud... “how the hell did I get on the ground?” Look at folded mirror with brake lever stuck against it... “well, that would do it”

Happy to see you are still enjoying the new Wing! I was surprised you didn’t cover the quick start feature that a lot of owners never realize. Just walk up to it with the fob in your pocket, squeeze the front brake and hold down the start button for a few seconds without the need to touch or do anything else and the bike will power itself up and start in one go.

That rear disc is called a “vented” disc and although it’s pretty much standard fitment on front of cars now I have never seen one on a bike before!! They displace heat better than a solid disc reducing the chances of brake fade.
    Basically it’s quality!!

    • @Nothing-yi6vw

To your point 8, what I do with my GW is I use a spare Sena SMH10 that I paired to my bike. I throw it in the middle compartment along with my phone so even if you dont have a helmet on or dont want to install to your helmet, Carplay and Android Auto will work. GW only needs to see that a comm device is connected and then it will work everytime. The audio will come out of the speakers then as well.

I have a GW DCT tour too. Regarding Apple CarPlay check the software version on your bike. You probably don’t have the July 2020 update. You can download and install it yourself it’s very easy. It will solve the connection problems, improve the sound output on the speakers and stop the annoying always enable message etc. Then you want to turn off the Bluetooth on your phone. You do not need Bluetooth as all the phone calls, music etc are played through CarPlay to your headset. The phone doesn’t have to be paired with the bike when using apple CarPlay. After the software update and Bluetooth off it will work flawlessly but always use an original Apple USB cable. BTW I’ve just got the new handrails 2020, must have upgrade IMO.

Hi Andy, Have commented now on a few of your Goldwing vlogs. Yes I agree about the Apple car play. It sorts of connects when it wants to so I’ve put a phone Mount on the left hand bar now ( there’s a piece you remove to put a mount on next to the switch gear ). This means now I connect my phone now and go off my google maps on there instead plus my phone/ headset works better. It’s great having all this gadgetry on a bike but find it a little distracting to be honest.
The helmet lock lever is on the inside of the left hand pannier at the top ( chrome lever). Pull this and a portion of the grab handle some s out and insert the holding bracket from the top down in the slot provided. I ended up drilling out a bigger hole in it so I could get a substantial strap through it. I’ve had mine new since April 20 and only done 1400 , miles thus far so still learning about things lol.
Sure as time goes on other things will come to you. Also about the “ secret key” slot in case you lose your key and you want to start the bike!! Well worth a look on you tube about it

You are right about the passenger grab rails. I have a 2018 model year (in black rather than your blue) and have already fitted the later rails. I am even smaller than you and they do make it even easier to put it up on the stand but I find the biggest benefit comes when rolling it off the stand which takes quite a shove. The helmet holder is unlocked using the lever in the left pannier and then you slide the hanger part in to the gap over the top of the grab rail and lock it again. It works the same way on the later grab rails but IMO is a bit of a pain to use. As you say the brakes on the bike are absolutely superb. I think there were a few bikes with vented discs back in the eigthies. One that springs to mind is the FJ1100 Yamaha. By the time I bought my FJ1200 they had ditched the vented discs on the front in favour of the FZR1000 brake but retained it on the back. I think these days they don't want the unsprung weight penalty on most bikes but on a Goldwing that isn't really an issue. I have a tracker fitted too, probably the same as yours as it was fitted for free by Honda. I also find that you have to keep an eye on the battery if parked up for a long time and charge it periodically.

I can't speak for the new Goldwing but on my gl1500 (2000), I find that if I leave the machine on its sidestand for more than a few hours, the sheer weight of the bike causes it to develop tyre flat spots, especially on the rear. It is a good habit to put the bike on its centre stand unless you are just stopping for a short period. But at this time of year, when it is likely to be stood for a week or two, then certainly use the centre stand.

TIP. When putting on the center stand.
From the left side of the bike. Put your Right leg up against the bike, grab the handlebar and the passenger handle. Make a stiff A frame with your upper body. Step on the center stand and only push down with your leg.
It's astounding how easily it goes up.
A guy showed me that years ago.
I rarely ever park my GW without putting it on the stand.
    Cheers!

Love the nerdy stuff. I’ve owned a Kawasaki ZX7R for many many years and only just found out that if it is in gear, ignition on, that you can press the starter which will step the fuel pump but not turn the engine over - it fills the carb float chamber - which is really useful if bike hasn’t been ridden for ages / you’ve run the tank empty and have just refilled. Also, did you know that the Zx7r (and other Kawasakis) has a clever gearbox - it has a ‘positive neutral finder’, which means when stationary, the bike can only move into neutral from 1st gear. I love finding out these little details 🤓

I would say Honda probably went down the vented disc route for the rear brake because how enclosed it is, so with not much air getting to it, it's a possibility under prolonged braking a solid disc could over heat, causing brake fade, and possible warpage ...

#2 the bagger model doesn't have a trunk for your helmet so it has the locking device for your helmet. honda could have made something better. #3 the suction effect is eliminated by popping up the vent at the top of the instrument cluster thats what its for. #6 technique is everything getting it on the center stand... try your stance next to the bike but use your right foot instead of crossing over with your left and lifting with the passenger grab rail. #8 i have the 2019 and my bike has a USB connection in the glove box where your bike appears to have the airbag. i have my bike and cell phone programmed to auto linkup via bluetooth when i turn on the ignition.

Secret #9 wishing your bought a 1250GS(A) after owning a gold wing for awhile. 😁
Seriously though. The center stand thing can be a pain. Not sure if you’re model has the option, but if you can put the suspension in “loaded” or “max” mode, it’ll give the bike a bit of a lift and be all that much easier to put on the center stand. I use the same trick on my GSA when she’s loaded down with gear. My older Wings, would allow me to use the reverse “gear” to help a bit also.

About every 13,000 -16,000 miles the front tires were pretty much cupped out and pounding in corners. All the dealers back then wouldn't do much about it under warranty. In the USA they used the excuse that the owners didn't keep enough air pressure in the tires.. I always kept mine at maximum pressure and checked the tires regularly. The wife and I toured the USA north to south and east to west. They are an awesome smooth riding road bike.

Good observations! CarPlay will always need phone connectivity: hardwire or bluetooth (select 'once' btw). But the Cardo shouldn't be needed at all, unless you also need directional voice prompts. With many bikes (BMW Connectivity for instance), Siri won't work unless you let the phone connect to the bike first before turning the Cardo on. That's a pain, because with bluetooth connectivity you then have to turn the Cardo off whenever you stop and back on again (after phone reconnection) before you depart again. Run the Wayz app (owned by Google) rather than Google Maps, to see where the police are stopped and to get through traffic jams quicker via real-time community feedback.

Re Apple Car Play. I have recently purchased the GW non Tour DCT. I found that if you set the Apple to ALWAYS connect and then go to settings on your phone and find Car Play. Make sure the Honda GW is showing. If Not press and hold the Telephone / speech button above the Horn Switch. This should connect your Apple car play automatically to your phone for continuous connectivity every time to use your MC.
Note :- ITs frustrating that the Apple Car Play doesn't come onto the screen instantaneously you have to wait a few minutes for the BT to connect. Make surer your headset is on first for connectivity to your Helmet. Once the Apple car play is showing on your screen you can then toggle from head set to main speakers by pressing the AUDIO button on your central keypad. Whichever you fancy.
For making phone calls or verbal texting you can either speak your command via Siri through your Cardo OR alternatively press the Telephone button on your MC and then make your request via Apple car play.
The Radio memory Pre set channels is my next task as this seems another issue to overcome.

I like your garage. Very clean and organized. And lots of toys.

Another great video. Re CarPlay... I could be totally wrong, but I think if you pair the headset to the phone, then pair the phone using Bluetooth it should all spring to life

It is such a pleasure riding her at night. The gauges and buttons are pleasent to look at and the lumens are just right. The best bike I have ever owned in 30 years riding.

I think the twin caliper on the rear disk is due to the auto box, one of the calipers is the parking brake. Regarding to the lack of tie downs, cant you use the helmet latch. Are you going to fit the daytime set lights to the front of the engine covers, they look cool, and a safety thing, the more lights the better.

Yes the second caliper is for that for sure - it's the twin disks I was impressed by. I'd like those spotlights but they are eye wateringly expensive to have installed....

@@TheMissendenFlyer She's a big heavy lump to stop, needless to say the vented disc. Could you not manage to buy the light kit and fit it yourself. Still pricey though.

Great video mr Flyer!! Little tip for you once you figure out the helmet hanger leave it on and you can use as an anchor point for straps 👍.. I have the 2015 GL1800 and I am hoping, one day, to gat the latest version...

I love your Goldwing, it’s a beauty. You’re spot on with the tracker/battery problem. My tracker drained mine within three weeks, on a brand new S1000RR, M-Sport.
I look forward to your next vid’.🖖
