Always make sure straps aren’t twisted. Always my big goof!

I’m a man and one of only a very few that sew in our area. I get emergencies where I do big alterations overnight

Occasionally I get those, too. But I'd prefer not to have to deal with emergencies!!! Thanks for watching!

@@SewDarnedFun I’m not real happy about emergency alterations either but your name gets spread rather quickly when you are willing to do the nearly impossible

@@SewDarnedFun i remember the guys laughing at me in junior high when they all signed up for shop and I signed up for home economics. I had two reasons. My grandmother had already taught me many skills so I figured it would be easy and the second and more important reason, there were any girls in shop class.

That's hilarious (your reason for take home ec)! When I was in Jr. High, we all HAD to take shop class. My wooden candle holder really wasn't anything to brag about...except that I learned you can get a nice shiny smooth piece of wood with a very fine grit sand paper. Home Economics was more up my alley. Hey, tailors all had to start somewhere, right? My grandfather was a tailor (of men's suits). I don't know where he learned it from. But sewing should be something that all people should be proud to do!! Good for you!!

Could you do a video on how to take up shoulder seams on a cotton dress with a lining? Also how do you stop a neckline from gapping on a scoop neck or v-neck cotton dress. Thank you

That would be a good video for me to do. I will keep this in mind as my workload comes in. But in the meantime, if it's a summer dress (ie: sleeveless), you can sort of 'reverse engineer' how the seams are sewn, and take it in in the same manner. I usually access the shoulder seam by opening the side seam in the lining, if the dress is completely lined. As for a scoop neck that is too large (I see another video in my future!), there are so many reasons a neckline might gape. But if the shoulder seem needs to be taken up at the neck edge, you could start with pinning it there and see if it relieves the problem. If not...one of the tricks that I use, primarily in formal-wear, when there's no other alternative, I run a sturdy basting stitch just along the inside of the neckline in just the lining portion and slightly pull that thread to force the neck edge to cup in toward the upper chest. But if the gaping is too much, this would not be the best option. Worth a try, though! Thanks for the video ideas :)

What sewing machine do you use? Great video. Will use it to alter my daughter's dress.

Hi there! Thank you so much for watching! I use Viking machines. In this video I am using a Viking Designer 1, which is currently outdated and no longer sold, just FYI. But there are lots of great machines out there that will get the job done :)

    doesn't show lengthening

Oh my! Thank you for pointing that out. Sometimes what seems obvious escapes my thinking process ;) If you want to lengthen, follow the exact same procedure, but instead of pulling the strap in to shorten, pull the strap out to lengthen. Usually there is an extra couple of inches of strap inside the dress. If you need more length than the straps have, then consider replacing the straps, entirely, with a ribbon or such. Also, remember, you can lengthen from both ends of the strap, so you have two ends which which to possibly find length. Hope that helps!
