  • Hemming chiffon (or other sheers) can be a daunting task. Don't try to do it without some instruction first! This video is a MUST if you want to replicate that very narrow factory hem that formal dresses come with. In under 10 minutes, this video shows you exactly how you can sew a great chiffon hem!

    Carrie, this video is such a massive help! I return to it again and again. I've used it to alter a friend's bridesmaid dress, a formal dress for myself, and am back once again to review while I whip up some georgette into a ballet skirt! Thank you so much for sharing. ❤

    Thank you! I am hemming a bridesmaid dress for my daughter-in-law who will be 8.5 months pregnant in her dress. Intuition told me to attach a pillow to my dress form and use it to mark the hem instead of marking it on the ironing board as I usually do. Needless to say I was thrilled I got that part right. At that point I was clueless and have always avoided chiffon (I'm only been sewing for 55 years!) but now have the confidence to go for it. So excited - I subscribed!

    Carrie, I can’t thank you enough for your tips about hemming Chiffon. I’ve looked in the past for ways to make this task easier…and never found your method until today. This is such a blessing. Have to hem my daughter’s dress for the oldest brother’s wedding this spring. This tutorial makes this seem doable. I will try and build up the courage to begin this daunting task. 😊
    As I’ve read through the comments, a thought came to mind….perhaps we can do a practice run along what will become the waste fabric that gets trimmed off. In other words, make a practice hem way below where you are actually going to hem the dress. Also, as someone mentioned; make sure the wearer tries on the dress in the shoes they are wearing for the event. Especially with a floor length gown.

      Have the hem pressed. but, the lining is wonky!!! Didn't realize it until I pressed the Chiffon per your instructions and hung the dress up for a final check before sewing the hem. (Ordered this dress online.) The only thing I can think to do is take the smallest hem and use that all around the skirt. Any thoughts? I don't want to re-hem the lining.

    • @SewDarnedFun
      @SewDarnedFun  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bootsboots8453 Can you let me know what you mean by wonky? The lining should be anywhere between a half an inch to an inch shorter than the chiffon. In my experience it would be easier to shorten the lining then mess with the chiffon. You certainly don’t want to get that sheer chiffon layer wonky also! If you have a serger, you can just serge the lining, turn it up, press it and topstitch it. I’d like to help you if you could give me more details :)

    • @bootsboots8453
      @bootsboots8453 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SewDarnedFun You are too kind. I need the floor length dress for my granddaughter's formal wedding this Friday, June 3rd. Arrrrh! Anyway, wonky means the lining isn't even. The chiffon "was" 2 inches to 1inch longer than the lining. The chiffon was dragging by 2 inches. I didn't know what to do, so, I cut and sewed the chiffon 1" shorter all around. I did use your methods per video which was extremally helpful. The dress is black and I am old, so, I won't be noticed too much. And, I'll have to watch my steps or wear higher heels. I should have started on my dress sooner, but, had so many other wedding assignments to do. Thank you so much for the helping hand. I'm your new fan.

    Love the video and technique. Going to give it a try. I have two gowns to hem with chiffon overlays. I see you use a plastic foot on your machine. Is this a special "glide" foot and does it perform differently than a metal foot?

    • @SewDarnedFun
      @SewDarnedFun  ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope my video will be helpful with your gowns. The foot I have on my machine is a Teflon foot. Honestly I don't have it on for any particular reason than it works well with a wide variety of fabrics and I don't have to change it ;) Also, it has little corners and such that I use for visual marking points, but other foots can have those little nooks and crannies, too. I see no reason why you couldn't use a regular 'silver' pressure foot, as long as it holds the fabric down well. Thanks for watching and good luck with your two gowns!!!

      Thank you for watching and commenting on my video! I love this method of hemming chiffon, having tried other ways and was never happy with them. As for your question, I’ve always used the same color in the bobbin as the needle. Chiffon is sheer, so if you are hemming chiffon, just keep in mind that if your bobbin thread is a very different color than your fabric, it might show…? You’ll have to do a sample and let me know! • @SewDarnedFun
      @SewDarnedFun  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remember that I pressed the hem up (I didn’t cut) then I ran a row of stitching just inside that pressed up hem, basically making another fold right next to the pressed fold? At this point, the extra hem allowance that I didn’t cut off, is now cut off, which allows the fabric to freely fold up on my officially pressed hemline. Then I stitch the tiny hem in place. You can see the demonstration I show on PAPER at about the 3:00 minute mark in this video. Please refer to it, if you've missed it! I’ve also just put out another shorter video on doing this same hem. I don’t know if it might show or explain things in a clearer way. @SewDarnedFun  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all, thank you for watching and commenting! You have a question with a double-edged answer there....YES, you can hem accordion pleated chiffon like this. However, when you press it, the pleating will come out in the areas you have pressed. It is time-consuming, but you can carefully, one by one, press the ends of those pleats back in. I have done it before and it turned out beautifully. But, it takes some tedious ironing when you're done with the hemming ;) Hope that help!
