This short video will show one way that you might use to fix a sweetheart neckline that is sort of 'flappy'. The dress just won't conform to the wearer's chest/bust area. This method is used when there are appliques that can be removed and replaced. There are other methods that would be more favorable to a dress that has a smooth front, but this video is particularly for one that has lace or ap...

Best video. I loved how you used the paper demonstration! It's so much easier for me to use the pressed line as a guide than the chalk. Brilliant.
Thanks so much for the feedback. It’s nice to know it was helpful. This is the way I hem ALL my chiffon projects. Thank you for watching and commenting! ❤️
beautiful job, very neat loops

Little things that bring me joy? ....your short videos! 😊
😆Thanks Bonnie! 💕
Since watching this video (more than once) I thread up several needles at the start of a project so that when I need to hand stitch I can just grab the threaded needle and off I go. I find stopping and starting to rethread irritating because it’s hard for me to see. When I do it first it makes me happy. It’s like measuring out all the ingredients before you start cooking. It all goes easier and quicker. It’s the little things that give me joy. Thanks for posting this.
Such a great tip and wonderful to hear what gives you joy. Thank you for sharing ❤️
I have that exact same sewing kit I picked up in a hotel over 20 years ago. Same colors, buttons and pin. I just recently to it, once again, across the UK on a visit. It is back in my sewing cart stored for the next vacation.
WOW! That’s AMAZING! I guess my Inn was into ‘vintage’! 😆 I love that you have the same one from 20 years ago!
Im experimenting with Organza for my doll clothes. I'm using my rolles hem presser foot for this adventure. Wish me well 😊
I DO wish you well! If you can successfully use that pressure foot, kudos to you!!! I hope it turns out well! 😊
I would make a slash across those points, there are too many layers when you reverse the collar.
Cutting the fabric makes an unruly blob and can actually fray at that corner. If the fabric is truly thick, then yes, some trimming might be beneficial. I’m demonstrating a ‘factory method’ and if you haven’t tried it, then you might want give it a go! ;) Thanks for watching!

Thank you for great clear well videoed demonstration. Greetings from North Wales UK 🙋🏻♂🙋🏻♂
So glad it was helpful! Thanks for joining me all the way from the UK! You have a very beautiful area of the world <3
😮 .... I wonder if this works on all corners? ...maybe we don't need to trim corners? My Great-Niece (8) has asked me to teach her to sew. Last Sunday I went to their house and gave her basics. I watched her brain taking it all in ... putting the information together ... so I turned that imagination loose! She made a pillow, by herself, while I was there. She was working on a blanket when I left. By the time I arrived home (1 hr drive), her mom sent a picture of finished quilt, and a scarf. ...she's been cranking out stuff since!
That’s great!!! Sounds like you have helped instill some good things in her. Most corners can be done with the method in this video or a variation of it. For corners that are more like 45 degree angles instead of 90-ish degree, you can do 3 folds: first fold down the fabric straight across the top, then fold in on each of the stitch lines. There have been a couple times that I have had to trim away some fabric but mostly because of its bulk. But for most cases, you don’t need to trim, like we learned ‘back in the day’ ;) Thanks for you comment and for watching. Good luck with your continued teaching of your great niece!
Love the simplicity of it and how good the results look!😍
Thank you!! 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting! ❤️
Put the heavier material on the underside of the collar, then press. Sometimes for heavy material I will use my small art hammer before ironing.
Is a small art hammer basically a hammer to crush the fibers? If so, I use the same type of thing (an actual hammer) on super thick jeans hems when the denim is really dense! Thanks for your tip and for watching :)
That is brilliant. No more poking through the point!
I know!!!! Right?!?!? 😊
Awesome
I’ve never seen appliqué scissors!
Yes!!!! That’s what they look like!
That’s a great video!
Thank you ❤️Glad you liked it!
Your Lyric dress is lovely. I have this pattern, but haven’t made it yet. I’m curious as well why you printed all sizes rather then using the layers feature and only printing your size. I hope you have a wonderful anniversary holiday and enjoy wearing your dress.
Thank you so much for your happy wishes. This dress is indeed lovely and I’m so happy with it. As for the pattern printing in all sizes… on the particular computer I used when printing this, the layer option wasn’t available. It was probably an issue with my program, and not at all the pattern file. On my other computer the layer feature works great. That’s the only reason. ;) Thank you for watching and asking your question!
Loved your lessons on Chiffon /Sheer Fabrics! Worked Perfectly!!!!!
So great to hear it worked well for you! Thanks for letting me know by leaving a comment ❤️
I would have done a French seam
Just curious what your thought process is. If the original shoulder seam wasn't done as a French seam, and it would have been easier to replicate the original type of seam, less time consuming and less costly for my client, would the French seam have any benefit? I can see doing it this way if one doesn't have a serger, and certainly a French seam is nice for longevity. If you can provide some insight for me, I'm open to it and would love to hear it. Thank you for watching!
I am excepionally short in the waist , my back waist is 14 inches, plus I am only 5'2" inches tall so knowing how it fit you, makes this a no for me. Great review.
You might want to make a muslin of just the top part, and make any changes that would make it fit correctly for your back waist measurement. Mine is just over 15" and I think a lot of my height is in my legs. If you like the pattern, don't give up on trying it out! You might need to hem is shorter in order to fit your height though. Thanks for watching!
The “fit out of the box” category isn’t very useful for your viewers, since we don’t have your body, nor do we even have your body measurements to compare to. A category telling us the size range that is provided in the PDF would be helpful.
Thank you for your input. My review is done from my point of view, obviously. It is simply my experience. There are some sewists who expect patterns to fit without any changes (usually newer sewists), so for me it's important to document how many changes I need to make. Of course this might or might not be different from other viewers. There are people who do have my body type. I don't give my measurements, as that's too personal for me to give out. Perhaps I forgot to mention what size I made up, but I'm pretty sure it was an '8' all the way through. The range of sizes on the PDF is available on the site, if you want to see it. All the sizes are included in the PDF, which would be a good thing for me to remember to mention, even when I am trying to get a video quickly filmed and edited. That's a 'check mark' to put in my memory bank!!! Truly I thank you for watching my video and providing your input :)
I just now discovered your videos. I’m impressed, and subscribed for all notifications. I plan to do a rolled hem on Christmas napkins…..double faced semi-circles with the rolled hem all the way around. The folding of the finished product makes the tree shape. I’m having trouble knowing how to turn the “corners”……from the top straight edge to the beginning of the curve, and vice versa. Hope that makes sense. Do you have any help for me on that please? I LOVE that you share scripture. God bless you. 💗
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing <3 Your napkin project sounds fun :) Rolling the edges that go around a point is something you'll need to do some practice on. I would recommend going just off the edge and without pulling your threads out from your machine, lift the needle and pressure foot. Turn your fabric to the position you need it around the corner and then start just one stitch off the fabric before the feeddogs pull it under. Try that and see if it works for you. Going around corners with a serger can be a bit finicky, but you'll find something that works well enough, I'm sure :) Colossians 3:17 (in part): "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus..." I think of this when I'm sewing <3 Thanks fo much for your comment.
@@SewDarnedFunThank you for the help!
Please let me know if that was helpful or not. I hope you have great success in making your Christmas napkins! (I want to see what they look like now!!!) <3

You’re right! I hadn’t thought about that 😆
Great video! Now I can’t wait to try it. I’m thinking a sleeveless version although I loved your sleeves…
YES!!! A sleeveless version would be wonderful! ❤️ Great idea! Thanks so much for watching!!
I haven't made this yet, but I will definitely make the sleeves fuller.
I love the fuller sleeves! It would still look great with the ones that the pattern has, but I guess my preference is for more 'flutter'! ;) Thanks for watching and dropping a comment!
When considering height in a pattern: You may be the same, shorter or taller than a pattern says it designed for, BUT: it all comes down to where you carry your height ( example: you could be 5’5” with a short torso and long legs, or a long torso & shorter legs. Or be 5’8” with a long torso and shorter legs. Just something to keep in mind when considering a pattern based on the height it’s drafted for.
Excellent point. That would probably be more important to consider when fitting pants. I think I have long legs, which would explain why the torso if this pattern was so spot in! But I love the length, and don’t know where exactly the hem was intended to fall to. In my dress it falls just below my knee which is perfect!
Great video. Thank you. As for the sleeve shoulder notch not being “in the center” of the sleeve: the back armhole length is actually naturally longer than our front armhole length ~ Which is why the sleeve cap notch is further towards the front of the sleeve cap.
Thanks for the observation. This pattern is made with this idea. Not all patterns have the notch off center however. Some patterns (some for knits come to mind) have the sleeve shape exactly the same in front and back) with the notch exactly in the center. It was simply an observation I briefly commented on regarding where I wanted to start measuring when I changed the sleeve. I appreciate your input and thank you for watching my videos! <3
Great video. Thank you. As for the sleeve shoulder notch not being “in the center” of the sleeve: the back armhole length is actually naturally longer than our front armhole length ~ Which is why the sleeve cap notch is further towards the front of the sleeve cap.
Very true. On this sleeve pattern that is the case. Not on all sleeve patterns though ;) Thank you for the clarification!
I’m getting ready to make this soon, so your video was great timing. Also, I’m 5’2” so I’m definitely going to need a muslin to see how much to shorten it. I’ll be stealing your sleeve hack!
Oh perfect timing! That's great! A muslin is always such a good idea. Let me know how you like this pattern...I think it's so cute! Yes, please steal the sleeve hack!!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hi, your vlog jumped into my feed and as I have this pattern I was very interested in your review and small alterations. However, I don't understand why you have a category for 'pattern fits me straight out of the box or packet'. Whether it fits well or not is more to do with whether the LN block suits your individual body than a characteristic of the pattern itself or the quality of the drafting. I make many alterations to my toiles and I expect to usually. Scoring clarity of instructions and general drafting is however, very useful. I'm interested to learn your response to my observations. Thank you
That's a great question! I included 'fit out of the box' primarily because there are sewers (usually newer sewists) who expect that a pattern should fit as it is. So I just wanted to document how many changes, and what they were, to fit my particular body shape. Some pattern companies take into account common fitting issues and change their patterns to accomodate the majority of their users. Others, however, just leave the common 'problems' in their patterns so that the users end up having to change them. So I figured it might be a useful catagory to some. You said that you have this pattern. Have you made it yet? What changes do you normally have to make? Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!
I love your sleeves. I will be using the peplum top part of the pattern for my muslin too. I know I will need to do a few adjustments and it takes so much less material!
Yes...if I know the skirt will fit my circumference, I don't want to waste fabric doing that. And being that this pattern has a peplum top as an option, I just cut on the top line. It's so cute I hope to make a top with this pattern, too! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! Use my sleeve hack...I love the more fluttery sleeve on this dress!
I like your scoring assessment of the pattern. It tells me so much about the pattern experience.
So glad you commented on this. I don’t know if it’s beneficial to others, but I like evaluating in this way.
Oh, I love that dress! Those flutter sleeves are simply divine! A simple, yet classy dress for all occasions! A great choice!
Thank you so much!! I'm so glad I changed the sleeves, because I couldn't be happier! Thanks for watching <3

You look beautiful in your new dress! Happy Anniversary and I hope you have a wonderful time on your tropical trip. Would you share the pattern you used for the shawl collar top/dress that you're wearing if you made it?
Thank you for the anniversary wishes <3 We are looking forward to our trip. The blouse I'm wearing I devised on my own. I used a blouse pattern, and made it sleeveless. I used directions on how to make a shawl collar from Peggy Sagers at Silhouette Patterns, but I made it a few years ago and don't remember the specifics on which video I watched, etc. ;)
@@SewDarnedFun Thank you! I'll look through her videos.

I've not used anything but chalk or pencil. But I have toyed with the idea of using the heat markers. I had no idea what could cause the marks to reappear!! Thank you for the heads up!
There are other markers (more like fine felt tip) that you can buy, specifically for fabric. My experience is they dry out pretty quickly...but that was quite some years ago. I love the gel pens because I can use them for writing, too, and in so many colors, I can use the different colors for different markings, or for use on certain colors of fabric. Thanks for watching and commenting, my faithful viewer! <3
Thank you for sharing this informative video! As clumsy as I am these days, chalk went out the window with the doo-doo bird. Like you, I have found the gel markers a great choice for hardy material, or I use a fine-point gel ink pen for delicate fabrics. Both wash out well and the best thing is that the mark doesn't disappear when I am man-handling a complicated seam! 😉😊
Great to know that gel washes out! Since I don't ever experience the marks coming back due to cold weather, etc. I never see my marks again after I iron them. It was a game changer for me to discover these pens! I still do use a chalk marker for formal hems, though ;)
Wow! Thank you. This tutorial is so much helpful. Well appreciated. 🇨🇦🥰

Thank you!!!
I’ve always ever done the second way with marking done before sewing. Thanks for the tour thru bias tape making.
It was a new method for me! I guess I’ve not needed to make much bias. It was interesting to me that the magazine’s instructions simply didn’t work as stated. Like I said in the video…. I just might be ‘late to the party’! Thanks for watching and commenting!!!
@@SewDarnedFun came from the quilting world, and using the bias binding around a quilt to finish it. Different tracks of sewing. Love it when they collide…..
What setting do you put the iron? Super stressed because my mom's dress was supposed to be ankle leangth and it's dragging the ground. She has back issues so anything besides flats is out and my sister's wedding is on the 20th. Have have the chiffon and satin to do. Just shy of 12 YARDS to heam. The dress was late and the alteration show charges by the yard plus $25 since it would be rushed. It would be more then the dress itself (which we got from Amazon). We couldn't hardly afford the dresses in the first place. So I know I am going to spend ling hours doing this! Also any needle suggestions? Never used chiffon other then a doll dress where ut was small and didn't matter.
OH my dear, I'm so sorry you have this stress to deal with. Take a deep breath and practice on the portion of hem that you know will be cut off, both with your iron and with the sewing technique. Make sure your iron is clean and doens't have black buildup on it that could get on your chiffon. My iron setting is alway left on a cotton setting. My iron, however, has a special 'shoe' that I've put on it, that diffuses the steam and heat. So I don't know if it would be harsher on fabrics if I took the shoe off. I use a universal needle in either size 75/11 or 80/12. I wish you very good luck and hope that come out the other end with a big smile on your face and an excellent hem <3
