Thanks for watching. This mower was leaking oil, so I resealed the oil pan using gasket maker instead of a paper gasket, and I hate to say it, but I might have made a mistake.

It's a lawn mower, it's not going into space. You did it the right way! It sounded reasonably stable once it the carb filled up. A new plug, maybe cleaning the jets might get a tiny little bit more out of it but it sounds like it's more than ready to go out into the world again.

As for your engine missing issue, I agree with a couple of other commenters that the valves may need attention, but I think there may be another issue. I noticed what may be an inline, in tank fuel filter when you removed the fuel line from the tank. It may be clogged and it’s easy enough to remove the fuel line again, pull out the filter and back flush it. Also replace that suspect air filter.

Good fix! As one viewer mentioned earlier the inline filter could be an issue worth checking out.
I believe it was Steve’s SE Saloon who had a video where he opened up the pilot jet with a micro drill bit.
I have been doing that ever since with good results.
Beyond that, and maybe a new air filter, I wouldn’t spend too much more time on it. I’d still call this one a win!

So, my son in law has this same type of mower, Toro with Kohler engine he bought new and no one has ever worked on it. He told me it no longer started. I took covers off and found the choke linkage missing! After the machinations you went through to remove the linkage; I am at a loss as to how the linkage dis-appeared! I simply put a hand choke on it and now it starts fine. ALWAYS enjoy your videos; very informative.

I had the same mower and it was great for the first season. I winterized the mower like I always do and the 2nd season the carb/auto choke started causing problems. I tried everything to solve the problem and didn't have any luck. I just didn't want to spend the money on a new carb and auto choke system because I noticed that lots of people online seemed to have the same problems so I gave the mower away and bought a new mower without a Kohler motor. I just think it's a poor design to save money. New Toro with a B&S motor is running like a champ! Great video and maybe it will help some people with this piece of junk mower.

Those Kohler choke linkages are a real nuisance. I have not found an easier way to get them off, but I do see that Kohler seems to list 2 different carb options for these engines. I think in future design, they dropped the vacuum part from them. I've also had the surging issue on many Kohler of this size, until the choke fully opens - theirs seem to take forever to fully open compared to Honda/Briggs.

First, I noticed that the float didn’t appear quite parallel to the carb body in the up position. Next, go to Harbor Freight and get an ultrasonic cleaner for cleaning jets and emulsion tubes. Just be careful with 2 stroke carbs as it can destroy a small check valve inside the carb that you can’t replace. My Troy Bilt still wouldn’t run after cleaning with wires and carb spray. I disassembled it and gave it the ultrasonic treatment and now it runs great. Money well spent.

I’ve been using Threebond 1184 successfully for various applications. Some of the manufacturers have their own versions, although I haven’t used them yet, including Hondabond and Yamabond. Stihl uses Dirko. I also have a red RTV I’ve used a little. The two I’ve used have slightly different characteristics when applying. One suggestion I received for using the Threebond was to apply a very thin film to both surfaces, allow to set up overnight and then apply a thin film of motor oil so it’s possible to disassemble in the future with destroying the gasket. I haven’t had a chance to test out disassembling yet but first chance I get I’ll see what happens. 👍🔧

I've actually had a pretty good experience with the Kohler on my Recycler. Got the mower for free, had to clean the carb, and it's run strong ever since. Mine also has a far less complicated autochoke, no vacuum. I think it actually uses the cooling fins from the flywheel to choke the carb if I remember correctly.
For yours, seems pretty good overall. I probably would chase that slight misfire myself, but it probably won't cause any serious issues. I'd just replace the flywheel key, check valve lash, and double check the carb. Sometimes those flywheel keys just get partially sheared or worn, and it can mess with the timing just enough.

When you remove the governor spring and throttle control and the bracket holding the choke lever pull the carb straight back and it’ll come off the choke linkage. It’s a pain in the ass but I just had to fix one where somebody pull the black lever off of the choke arm and it took me forever to get it right. The idle jet was clogged and the bowl nut leaked. It was a pia to fix but glad I had the parts from a junk mower so didn’t cost me a thing other than a $5 air filter and I made $120

Carb completely cleaned, flywheel key good, valve lash right on spec, fuel tank filter / vent / hose good, brand new spark plug and coil, brand new carb and still no joy. It should be pretty easy to track down but it happens to me every time so I don’t buy them anymore.
