I would just like to say: I too have a hard time recognizing faces. Put a wig on and maybe sprinkle some make-up on top and you may as well be a totally different person - especially if I have only met you once or twice.

There should be a Cinderella Story where the guy can't recognize the girl because he's literally face blind and the step-mom and sisters are taking advantage of his disability.

When your movies hinge on the requirement that the love interests have the "IQ of bread" (I lol'd), you know something has gone very wrong in the screenwriting process.
But what about the fact that the prince in the original Needs a SHOE to identify the girl he loves?
i completely agree about children and teen media. it really upsets me the way these grown adults are getting paid to churn out the most lazy, thoughtless writing. Think about all the talented writers out there who would be thrilled to have their jobs. The movies and shows children grow up with receive so much more appreciation and importance than the ones adults watch casually. Like look at how popular nostalgia content is. It's so sad to see all these writers squander the opportunity to give kids something meaningful, didactic, and beautiful for an audience that would cherish their work more than anyone.
Couldn't have said it better! Nothing beats looking back at an old, "nostalgic" movie and seeing it stand the test of time. The entertainment or media we grow up with is often one of the first few things we reminisce on when recalling our childhood memories (at least for a lot of us); so why not make it quality?

@@ana-isabel Ana, you should watch all the movies made based on the book, A Cinderella Story. Not all are quality, but you'll enjoy some of them. Some of the more recent ones have been pretty good, and have more mature story lines. I believe it is Wild Rose, she is even a single mother, and just like the Ashlee Hewitt one, she hopes to be a country music star. I heard Ana once adopted sheep, so that one might hit a sweet spot for her.
Poor Lucy Hale. I've always felt that she's a decent actor who just can't catch a break. Her IMDB is littered with awful horror movies and things like this. She deserves better!
10:16 this has always annoyed me. In the original story, Ella can't leave. She is entirely dependent on her stepmom and was forced/groomed into servitude.
Heck, take away the fantasy fairy tale, and what we see is a story of surviving domestic abuse.
But does anyone go in that direction? Nope. The closest was Into The Woods and OUAT S07.

They even made one in a foreign language that's dubbed to English, called DJ Cinderella, or Cinderella Pop.

I noticed how you mentioned it sounds like the Evil Stepmother in If the Shoe Fits sounds like shes doing a voice. The actress is actually Jennifer Tilly, the VA for Bonnie in Family Guy and Tiffany in the Chucky series, and thats actually just the way she talks lmao

Okay, I never saw either of these movies, but I will say that it seems as though the stepsister in the first movie is being manipulated by her mother, and that's.... kind of a slippery slope when you're still a kid. I don't know that she's a "bad" person, I think she needs some guidance and some time away from her overbearing mother, who pushed her into that situation of ultimately being humiliated in front of a large group of people. I think the stepmom is the one to blame here.
And yeah, she could have made her own choices for sure, but again, it's tricky when the bad influence is your own mother.
I guess for the second movie, same thing. I went through a situation of taking a lot of shit off my mother while living with her AS AN ADULT, and I was working. Emotional manipulation is a rough bag, and if you are being abused, it's a lot easier said than done to "just ditch." Just saying this from experience....

Ella Enchanted and the og A Cinderella Story do have nostalgic value to me. That being said, I saw the most recent direct Cinderella telling in the theathers, and I just remembered that when you mentioned it, which is telling to how much I was indifferent to that movie...
Ella Enchanted's movie was so different from the book.

Nickelodeon’s Rags is my favourite Cinderella story. It’s gender-bent and is surrounding music. I haven’t seen it in a while because it has basically disappeared but I know the songs were bangers.

I wouldn’t blame you for dumping this idea in the trash can of suggestions, but if your mind can handle it you might check out all the horrible beauty and the beast retellings. They’re bad. There’s one in particular “Belle and the Beast: A Christian Romance” (although some sources call it “Beauty and the beast: a latter day tale”, I have no idea the title switch, it’s the one from 2007 with Summer Naomi Smart as Belle) I was exposed to this movie when at my Catholic high school, for reasons only the man in the sky knows my teacher made us watch it in English class, it’s got that classic bad Christian movie acting and terrible writing but is so easy to pick spart and make fun of. I feel like you could probably round up a few of these crappy modern beauty and the beast retellings and make a fairly compelling video, love your work!

My personal Cinderella ranking: Ella Enchanted (the book), The Slipper and The Rose, Ever After, Cinderella by Rodger and Hammerstein, the Brandy version and the Lesley Ann Warren, Hey Cinderella, and Moss Gown. I'm gonna check these, they seem interesting

I definitely want to see Teen Spirit now and I agree with your take on Ella Enchanted: Anne Hathaway makes a terrific performance and the memes and callbacks come off effectively rather than cheesy. Cary Elwes appearance in the film is really fan service for The Princess Bride and draws a line of spiritual descendance to the movie.
I can say I have never seen ANY of these movies except for the Brandy Disney made for TV movie...but the way you present this content makes me happy to find out about all these other adaptations...even though I will never watch them!
After the Ball is a really good modern Cinderella story! The Prince Charming is actually charming and intelligent, the disguise which keeps him from knowing that Cinderella is right in front of him is actually fairly convincing, and the classic story beats are switched up a little. A quick Ctrl-F revealed no comments mentioning this movie, so I'm awfully disappointed in everyone! Lol, hope you see this Ana, I think you'd enjoy this movie! How come Cinderella never wants to be a hockey player, or a doctor, or a fighter pilot?
So I think the reason that they all turned into musical competitions was because of the success of American Idol which started in 2002 and High School Musical which came out in 2006. Hillary Duff's came out in 2004 and started shooting in 2003, I'm not sure when it was written but it was likely done before American Idol really became a success. Another Cinderella Story came out in 2008, so it was probably influenced by those. After that, it just became cliche and they did it because "all the others did", not mention selling soundtracks = more money.
I'm having a nightmare idea that I fear will happen. A gamer cinderella ... if you give it 1 min of thought you can make a whole plot. dear lord.

Hale's is my fave of this version. Drew Barrymore is my favorite Cinderella. Although it might sorta fit into this genre
Sophie Okonedo is a goddess! She plays Elizabeth in The Hollow Crown, an adaptation of Shakespeare's Wars of the Roses plays (Richard II, all the Henries, through Richard III). She's AMAZING!

So...there's a (legally) free movie here on TH-cam called "Not Cinderella's Type" that is supposed to be another modern retelling of Cinderella. It's supposed to be good, but I haven't watched it.

...But dear goodness, please get a mic with a boom arm and shock mount! I was listening to this with headphones and heard each and every bump, and I thought my headphones were messing up, lol. I can't remember if you mentioned that this was going to be the case, and I think you might be away from your usual recording space...but even if that's the case, be extra careful about kicking the desk or touching the mic (except on purpose, of course). Not sure if others found it distracting, but I definitely did.
I never noticed that the final costumes in If the Show Fits were a call back to the first Cinderella Story costumes!

Theres also a french musical thats a modern (even slightly futuristic) retelling called Cindy: Cendrillon 2000, its the cheesiest thing you could EVER imagine. You can find the whole thing on youtube but its in french. There ARE a few bops here and there tbh. They even have Murray Head, yeah the One Night in Bangkok Murray Head, as Cinderella's dad.

You did miss a bad Cinderella movie that does not have singing. My mom forced me to watch Not Another Cinderella Story, which features a cat dying at the beginning, all of the characters talking at each other and not doing anything a la Hallmark movies, and the prince helping the protagonist escape her abusive family and move into his social service worker father's house. It overall wasn't great and the cat death had me crying for 20 minutes of it despite not being graphic, but I did deeply appreciate that the prince character took slightly more realistic steps to help her out of her abusive household. Still not worth the watch because of the talking heads issue.

I think that these movies should be lauded for their positive representation of the face blind community. Also, in the Selina Gomez movie, that guy was definitely being turned on by his own reflection. The girl dancing on the other side of the wall had nothing to do with it. This sometimes happens to members of the ridiculously good looking community (the struggle is real).
Lucy Hale's was my favorite growing up so I'm super nostalgic for it lol, so very biased when I say it's the best of the series imo
BTW the girl who played Cat from Christmas wish also played Ally from Austin & Ally.
All he needed to do in the one with the shoe is play the G note on piano and *someone* would come forward with a matching black converse shoe.

What would your thoughts be on "Not Cinderella's Type"? It follows a girl named Indy who goes to live with her aunt, uncle, and two cousins after her mom's death and they treat her just like Cinderella; forcing her to do chores everyday, moving her into the attic, etc. and the way her "prince" saves her is that, thanks to his family therapist of a father, he convinces her that her family is abusing her and has her move in with him and his family. It's such a wonderful take on the story where it actually focuses on the abuse a Cinderella would endure at the hands of her family or stepfamily. If you haven't seen it, it's on TH-cam for free. I recommend it highly. Though, I also recommend skipping most of the beginning since it shows how her life got to where it is in the movie and it's all pretty sad. Especially the part where her cat gets run over...
Always stoked for a new Ana Isabel video! A little constructive criticism though, you seem to spend a little too much time on the redeeming qualities of each movie rather than the parts that actually make them properly bad. If they're just all dumb and cringy, and there's nothing new to say, including a few short clips of the worst moments helps to convey that. While it's good to give balanced reviews that give credit where it's due rather than just being scathing all the time, I would like to see a bit more detail to the criticism, as I end up feeling like the main reason I know they're bad is from where you say so bluntly. When most of the shots are muted and show the attractive lead actors, it has a way of softening the blow.
Still enjoyed this though! As always, the cosplay really adds to the visual experience of the video, and is part of what makes this great channel so unique
Some book recommendations for Cinderella adaptations I think people might enjoy: Princess of Glass by Jessica Day George, which takes Cinderella's arrangement with her fairy godmother as like a "deal with the devil" scenario with horrible consequences, which I think is a fun angle. (A warning though, this is a sequel to "Princess of The Midnight Ball", it doesn't effect the plot that much but our non-cinderella main character has some hang ups about magic and dancing because of the events of the first book.), Before Midnight by Cameron Dokey, where the whole "being treated as a servant" thing was a genuine misunderstanding. (Her father basically disowned her and didn't tell his new wife or children that he even had a daughter. Cinderella is too embarrassed to correct their assumption that she's a servant.) The love story is pretty rushed here but the family dynamic makes it an interesting read. Cinder by Marissa Meyer, a cyborg Cinderella set in the future. (Also has sequels!) and Geekerella by Ashley Poston, a modern day retelling where Cinderella and her prince meet over text and bond over their love for a sci-fi series. (Kinda doing the cyber romance from A Cinderella Story but I do like their text exchanges, like when Elle is trying to think of a certain word for her fanfiction but it's just not coming to her. Writer mood.) and the ball takes place at a sci-fi convention. Way better written than I make it sound. Also one of the stepsisters ends up getting together with the fairy godmother analog. Which is fun.

I have watched all these crappy cinderella live remakes but my all time favorite was Selena and Drew Seeley's version. My sister bought a bootleg of the movie when she was a teen and I would watch with her so I got to watch more of Selena. Fun times.

Ever After is the best Cinderella story adapted in movie form. But I do have soft spots for Duff's Cinderella Story and Ella Enchanted, they're cute and fun.
