Interesting fact about the Lost Boys. It's called that because originally it was a Peter Pan story, and Peter Pan was always a child not because of Neverland, but because he was a vampire. But it went through numerous re-writes and revisions and a modernizing of the setting and eventually morphed into what it was released as.

As a kid who got to see The Lost Boys and Blade 1998 before the Twilight Series existed, its very clear that Twilight killed the Viciousness,Cunning,Sexuality and Bloodlust that oozed from Vampires and made them into hipsters that ate animal blood only and couldn't have sex.
The Vampires of Blade 1998 are the perfect natural extension of The Lost Boys because they are hedonistic,Cruel,Young and see themselves better than humans and have no plan of setting up alliances with them or of Ruling the Humans from the shadows.
Werewolves got it worst because they just don't exist or turn into large Dogs. Hugh Jackman's Van helsing gets alot of shit but 2 things it did amazingly well were the designs for the Both Werewolves and Vampires being amazing. Dracula's wings being a natural cape in his Human form and The massive Black Fur and Claws of Hugh Jackmans Werewolf Transformation are severely underrated.

Another enjoyable presentation (even though it's been decades since I was a teen anything), well researched and nicely put together. Plus some fun cosplay (or you need to spend some more time in the outdoors) ;-) . There's another aspect of vampires that always seemed at play, the needing to feed off of the lives of others to continue to live that was a social commentary all on its own. Not so much at the forefront of teen vamp movies, but a bit like Colin Robinson, the psychic vampire from What we Do in the Shadows, the people that feed off the attention of others on Instagram to become influencers is a bit vampirish as well. Keep up the fun work, I still can't believe you only have 53K followers and that a major pop culture website like Nerdist or even Wired hasn't recruited you. You do this really well.

I did enjoy THE LOST BOYS. I also found the Anne Rice novels captivating (at first, more on that later). And when the World of Darkness RPGs like VAMPIRE: The Masquerade came out, I was in like Flynn, as they say. I was college age, branching out, finding myself as an adult as the 80's became the 90's.
But I soon noticed a trend with fellow players of the VAMPIRE game: Left to their own devices, many would soon make light of using regular mortals as pawns or food, often enjoying the concepts. The scene in THE LOST BOYS where the teen vampires cause trouble but successfully intimidate the adults may seem cool (Hey, the adults don't mess with us) but more and more looks like the same bullies featured in LET ME IN. "Don't mess with me, or I'll KILL YOU." The Anne Rice vampires are the same, "special" people who do not abide by any law, except for one: "Don't Get Caught."
The author Sharyn McCrumb once wrote of a character who enjoyed science-fiction fandom because it made them part of a group of like-minded individuals. It also, after years of ostracism, made her look at other people who had "normal" pastimes, and thought, "I'm part of something, they're not. I'm somebody, but they aren't." The character soon began to pull away from the fandom when she realized that this was the same mindset of serial killers.
I finished reading the Anne Rice novels with TALE OF THE BODY THIEF, but it was more of a "I have to see what happens next." It ended with Lestat back in his body after getting Freaky-Fridayed for awhile, and luxuriating in the fact that he has his vampiric freedom again.
These days, with school shooters, terrorist attacks, and dead-eyed people with high-powered assault rifles, reading about beautiful serial killers has lost its appeal.

It's all kinds wrong, but it's intensely gripping, interesting to watch. The aesthetic, the tone, the actors, it works. Cinema Therapy made a good break down of good and bad stuff in those.
I also liked the transhuman element to Mayer's vampirism, while I get why it would look terrible side by side with a lot of Mary Sue ridiculous moments (Mayer abuses Alice's powers a lot, makes everything always revolve around the Bella, whatever few downsides vampirism has in this universe Bella is immune to, etc.) of this series, the movies especially did a good job portraying how inhuman vampires can be in their abilities alone and how stark is the difference in experience between mortal and immortal Bella.
I think that people, who say, that Mayer is terrible romance writer, but potentially great body horror writer are correct. Maybe even sci-fi writer, too. Imagine Mayer writing in something like Eclipse Phase universe?

The psychological horror elements of Twilight are fun, but I couldn’t get over how it’s blatantly drowned out by romantic tension.
As an unreliable narrator story about descending into madness with someone that warns her about how dangerous he is, proceeds to be dangerous in ways she convinces herself are somehow okay, and claiming that she’s his weakness rather than consistently breaking off contact with her or be less of a liar… well it almost works.
But the horror plays more like “romance is scary so the constant disrespect is just something for me to overcome & expect from this guy”
And that just kills it for me.

I was about 14 in 1989 when we rented Near Dark and Lost Boys, and I really liked Lost Boys, but I found Near Dark more honest and compelling for showing the hardship or unglamorized side of Vampirism. Lost Boys and Near Dark actually complement each other in presenting a full picture of the teen Vampire.

    Re: CARMILLA
While DRACULA can be pretty easily seen as about (to some extent) fear of women's sexuality, I would posit the same cannot be honestly said of Le Fanu's novella. For one thing Le Fanu simply didn't write polemics or "warning" tales. For another CARMILLA has ever seemed to me more like a gothic version of an Irish folk tale in which a mere mortal has some kind of intimate encounter with the uncanny (the Fey usually) and is never the same again.
LET ME IN is one of my absolute favorite vampire films of all time, along with flicks like SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE and LIPS OF BLOOD.
I will flatly deny that Bella in TWILIGHT is "average in every sense of teh word" because she has several unusual and positive qualities that our culture sadly thinks dull. She is genuinely generous as well as kind, as well as demonstrating real courage. At most we sometimes pretend to have these qualities but she believably does. From what I've seen, this seems to be part of what Myers was focused upon with her character, namely the idea of power based on moral example rather than force. Plenty of problems with those books, but give them their due.

what I think is so funny is how vampires in general seem to represent this counter culture concept. What used to be adult vampires that were shunned and outcasted from society became teenage vampires that were idealized and practically unattainable then became child vampires that are real and reflective, maybe pun intended, of actual society. The concept of counter culture has developed so much over the past millennia.

A GREAT examination of the Teen Vampire phenomena. But I'm a little disappointed you chose not to at least acknowledge the original Swedish film Let The Right One In which follows the novel much more closely. Both films are great but not as interchangeable as you've been led to believe. The Swedish version features a much messier and unfiltered depiction of the pubescent sexual themes at play. Those themes are sanitized a bit for the American version and it's to its detriment, IMO. The Swedish version also gives a more otherworldly depiction of the vampiric element pushing it a little further in full-on horror territory. Let Me In choses to keep it's focus on characterization and does very well in that regard. You can't go wrong with either film but I think the original is just a little more ripe for examination.

Someone else pointed this out and I agree with everything you've said - though at the time of writing the essay I thought I'd keep it contained within the Hollywood popularity of teen vampires rather than in general cinema. The latter would not only have been pretty broad to analyse, but I also wanted to focus on the mainstream fame of the film trend - brought about mostly by media from the US.
I appreciate this criticism though; I do think I couldve given it a little more discussion since it was directly tied to a well-received Hollywood remake - so thanks for sharing your thoughts. :) I'm glad you enjoyed the video regardless!

Vampire Acdemy is actually being readapted as a show, going to be on Peacock this year (I think... and unless it gets pushed back).
I'll admit I wrote the rest of this comment only 8 minutes into the video but: I don't think vampires in pop culture can be talked about without some mention Anne Rice and the impact of her vampires. The Interview With The Vampire film adaptation didn't come out until 1994, but the book- published in 1976 and being based on Rice's own short story from 1968- was the first time audiences got a story from the vampire's perspective and where the vampire characters were more than just a vampire archetype and usually supposing to be the antagonist. Along with that, we have a major increase in the romanticization of vampires and Lestat and Louis becoming archetypes themselves- as we later prominently see in Buffy (Spike and Angel), True Blood (Eric and Bill), and The Vampire Diaries (Damon and Stefan), for example. I've also seen an article comparing David and Michael in The Lost Boys to Lestat and Louis. Obviously this video is focusing on teen vampires, but I thought it was odd The Vampire Chronicles or Rice weren't even mentioned, especially as being major influences- directly or indirectly- on other shows and movies mentioned and with otherness being resonant within the books of the series (and again connecting that to getting the vampire's perspective). Not to mention there's the child vampire Claudia- though she's only 5 years old in the book and 10 in the movie. Also, missed opportunity at least not showing rockstar Lestat at the mention of "essentially turning rockstars, or models, out of these monsters."

As a teen of the '80s, I of course was struck by the first generation of 'Hot, Sexy Vampires' in the form of 'The Lost Boys', and then ten years later with the advent of the Buffy-verse. It was, as you noted, a real departure from the traditional vampire portrayal, but perfectly in keeping with each era. There was significant evolution over even that brief period. The Lost Boys were self-indulgent, sociopathic killers, uncaring of the violence they dealt out to their victims, just living to enjoy themselves. This was reflective of the governing cultural ethos of the late 80s. By contrast, the very 90's vampires of Buffy (in the form of Angel and, later, Spike) showed us a haunted, tortured pair of anti-heroes, seeking to atone for their centuries of evil deeds.

As someone who's a big Buffy and Vampire Academy fan (and having consumed a lot of other vampire media) I really loved this deep dive video into the vampire genre.
Vampire Academy is actually getting a TV series which is being filmed atm, hopefully they won't mess it up this time because the ideas Richelle Mead had were really progressive for the time her YA paranormal fantasy book series came out (dealing with self-harm, depression, strong female characters with actual depth to their characters) though not completely unflawed ofc.
Can't wait to see what other vampire movies and books will come out in the future as vampires are just the most interesting mythical creatures out there (Anyone else also excited for the new Blade movie?). I just hope this renewed love for vampires will bring some new Buffy fans to the table as it deals with a lot of clichés but handles them wonderfully as it doesn't take itself too seriously like a lot of teen shows nowadays.
And I think faeries and elves are on the uprise too considering how big S J Maas' books are where fae are replacing the good old vampires 🧚🏻‍♀️

    • @ana-isabel
      @ana-isabel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you! And yes, it may be the saturation of content we get from them but vampires truly do stand out from other creatures/monsters in terms of their lore and symbolism. They're such flexible characters for storytelling too!
Curious about this new adaptation of Vampire Academy; hopefully it'll help wipe my memories clean of the 2014 movie. Also interestinggg - would be cool to see faeries get their time in the cinema spotlight, since they're often relegated to being simple side characters or accessories to a movie's setting (at least from what I've seen haha).

If you want some vampire content with bad plot, amazing music and great costume and set design, I recommend the German musical Tanz der Vampire, there's recordings on TH-cam with English subtitles. The musical features a rewriting of Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart and is absolutely worth watching if you're into the classical predator-ish angsty vampire lord vibe. Its humour is a bit outdated and sometimes mildly offensive, but there's still some incredibly funny scenes, so go check it out! The music absolutely slaps!

Not a teen romance but holy shit is Hellsing Ultimate underwatched. 10 part adaption of the Hellsing manga that is infamous for its brilliant action and gore sequences as well as working in a half decent narrative with an ensemble cast.
It takes the idea of vampires as a parasitic power fantasy to grand scale while also just going balls to the wall absurd building it's plot around a three way conflict between the Anglican church, the Catholic church, and goddamn Nazi vampires that also make zombies.
It is the absolute peak of 2000s media tropes and it is glorious.
    Schrodinger best boy.
Also watch the English dub. May as well as the show is already a shlockfest and there's so many accented characters that the original Japanese dub just doesn't do justice to.

The idea is that if you are active and longlived you are going to passively accrue wealth.
Additionally, think of it as selection bias. There is a stereotype of decadent, opulent vampire, so that's how they appear. We have to assume, that through skill, supernatual influence or luck they did manage to hide and pass wealth from themselves to themselves.
Those, who didn't are either not shown, because they don't fit the stereotype a.k.a. interesting, or they just woke up from a thousand year old slumber and may be too powerful to even need wealth.

None of these are movies or tv series, but ever since I read Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles when I was 14 (way back in 2004 :p), I became obsessed with vampire series. But not the Twilight series. I briefly skimmed that book at Barnes & Noble and decided that it wasn't worth my time. But for a good Teen Vampire romance series, the House of Night series is good. I enjoyed it, but I only got around to reading the series up to Redeemed, because life got in the way, and I think the Cast ladies have written more of the books since then. For more adult themed (erotica) vampire series, two of my favorites are the Dark series by Christine Feehan and the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward.

Also the vampires from the video game series The Legacy Of Kain is really interesting. I always thought the girl in The Lost Boys wasn't a vampire but was a human that (like you suggested) was useful to them as a lure. Its been a while since I've watched it all the way through but I don't remember her ever having "vampire face" like the others. As for Let the Right One In (this might be an odd question) I was always confused about the scene in the original when it shows her genitalia because it looks scarred so maybe she was actually born a male like in the book?

Saying that vampires represent 'the other' seems kind of broad and shallow to me. Maybe this is just my opinion, but the central feature of vampires is drinking blood, IE feeding off the life of others. In my opinion, this doesn't map onto being a hot teenager or whatever. I'd say monster IN GENERAL kind of represent 'the other,' with vampires just being used very loosely and vaguely in pop culture.

Maybe their predatory nature is another aspect, that might be seen as a metaphor for and individualism assertiveness, something, that teens both feel drawn to and feel apprehensive about. Especially, those, who were controlled, bullied, neglected, raised to be submissive and "think of others" (not taught the value of altruism, just the duty). Vampires on the other hand may seem as free, rebellious, living at 100% for themselves, taking what they want.
Vampirism might be presented as an allure of egoism, both its positives and negatives.

I figured if I ever wrote a vampire story, it would be about teenagers that have been around since the 1800s. Seen all the crazy stuff humanity did across centuries, participated in wars to sustain themselves and carry mementos of the past. And then in the modern day, they managed to stay hidden yet interact with the greater world. Some are hermits, others come out at night, witness to the best and the worst of this world.

As for which monster I think encompasses (at least my own very subjective) teen experience -- werewolves. Transformation is a very personal, physical change. Vampires, either tragic and isolated, or aesthetically immaculate and thumbing their nose at 'the man'/the establishment, are eternal. Fixed. Unchanging, or rather, the main struggle for them is overcoming anachronistic pratfalls; to learn the internet is (now) for more than porn, or how to set up modern music melodies (say that five times fast) on their smartphones.
Shapeshifters (especially lycanthropes/werewolves) are sweaty, smelly, hairy, eternally ravenous, anger management challenged, clique centric, hormonal/instinct driven fusterclucks. They're othered because they're monstrous: they're (seemingly) toxic killing machines, Purina-bent on primordial hedonism (being subsumed by the superego), in lieu of rational problem solving or a more mature state of keeping one's (less savory) urges in check. They're reactionary basket cases that have greater or lesser accountability for all those bodies left in their wake, depending on how much free will one allows during their transformative "altered state". Yup. That was pretty much my teen experience in a nutshell.
I, too, was on team Jacob. He was portrayed as being emotionally intelligent, empathetic, and sensitive to his romantic interest's wishes, dreams, and wellbeing. He wasn't interested in changing the protagonist -- he was the embodiment of quiet strength, the hot-bodied support network many teens 'deserved' but never actually got anywhere with their love interest, because the reverse harem girl was too busy angsting over the emotionally-constipated/unavailable, mysterious "badboy". At least, that is, until they removed most of those positive traits (Jacob said in one scene he would always be there for Bella, and almost literally the next day was ghosting her, lying and saying: 'Sorry, babe. I know I said we'd hang, but you know how it is, bros before hos; me and the boys got shit to do'), instead making him yet another fOr YoUr oWN GooD gatekeeping a$$hat. Who was also now suddenly emotionally unavailable, condescending, judgmental of life choices, overbearing and (if Bella, or rather, Edward would have given him an inch) just as unhealthily possessive as the other hot-body romantic interest.
I'm not going to touch the spiritually-connected-with-arousal/romantic text of imprinting on a newborn. For obvious reasons.
Vampires may have been updated to capture that late adolescent/young adult zeitgeist of immortal, punk-mentality driven, lust-inducing, Hot Topic 'fashion victims' (in the very best ways) we all wish we were (getting ALL THE PEOPLES -- boys, girls and everything in-between -- with none of the cause and effect accountability -- the ultimate Tinder-lifestyler), but that's always struck me as being an older (say, college age and up) power fantasy than an authentic teen experience. Your mileage may vary.
Loved your analysis! Thankful I found your channel, even if I'm several years late to the party.
    Cheers!

Glade you focus on the first Lost boys film and not the sequels. The second film was ok but like a lot of sequels the quality just want down hill. I like the original Swedish version of Let the right one in based on the book by John Ajvide Lindqvist which I also read and enjoyed. The American version Let me in which don't get me wrong was well done, but just wasn't as good as the original. I was not a fan of the Twilight franchise, but was a fan a Buffy the Vampire Slayer, MTVs Teen Wolf series wasn't to bad and children favorite Munster film Munster Squad. Hopefully the remake of Stephen King's novel Salems Lot will be better the then the first film done in 1979. I am surprised there hasn't been a film adaptation of Jeanne Kalogridis The Dairies of the Family Dracul series. The author uses the same dairy format as Bram Stoker and also enter twines historical figures in her novels like Vlad the Implaler as well as Countless Elizabeth Bathing and Jeffrey Dahmer.

"The fashion reflects that of an MTV music video." A good assessment, but wrong movie - and fours years too late. The first "young rock star vampire god" I'd ever seen in cinema was actually Peter Murphy and Bauhaus' opening cameo as the club band in 1983's "The Hunger." They managed to upstage Bowie in the first few minutes and set the look and mood of the vampire rock god - four years before Keifer Sutherland had a whole feature film to stamp his mark on the trope. Though its not specified whether the band are vampires, Peter definitely has the look and mood.
