    Regarding deepfakes of actors, one possible outcome would be that you would only hire actor for their performance skills, have them perform, and then just deepfake whatever appearance you want on them. In that case makeup artists should probably be more scared.

      I read a sci-fi novel several years ago where the main character wanted to watch a movie and he was able to swap the face of the main actor with his own. I can totally see this being a thing given how there's already phone apps to swap your face onto actors in movie and tv clips.

      I think there's a movie where Robin Wright sells her likeness to a digital company so they can make movies and TV shows starring a CGI version of her, but as tecnology advances over the years, the company now can (and have intentions of) selling virtual reality avatars of Robin Wright, wich leads to a situation similar to that nightmare sequence in Being John Malkovich... the posibilities are endless

      In the 2005 King Kong movie Jack Black originally was filmed without makeup due to refusing as he heard a fabricated rumour about Clint Eastwood never wearing makeup in his films.
      So after hearing that it wasn't true they did after effects to, well make it look like he did wear makeup.
      I should point out this film had a retro look so it was a lot easier to do. Especially due to it being done in 2005 era technology.

      Because new things are always full of unknowns and people tend to fear the unknown, so whenever something new crops up, the first thing people do is imagine all the ways it could go horribly wrong. Take comfort in knowing that humanity has always done this, and despite the countless number of times we've imagine blowing ourselves up with some new tech, we are still here. This is just one more such change, and while there are downsides to it, as for practically everything else, we'll be fine this time too.

      Because we don't think much about the consequence of the technology or the research we are developing or the ethical aspects of those. We truly believe that is something good and for the progress of humanity. Unfortunately, the real world don't work that way. It can be used for a good thing? Sure, there are a lot of great things about deep fakes. But there are very serious issues too. Also because a lot of the development of research and technologies are not being well regulated because of a whole bunch of issues that are not related to those fields so that doesn't help either.

    As someone who has done a lot of research on this subject (combatting voice fraud), this is really well done. I do believe commercials will be the first to get actors to sign off using their likenesses without having to do any work. Improvisation is a huge asset to comedy and part of why The Office and similar shows are so successful. Sticking to the script can be boring and bland, and with deepfakes we lose that originality an actor brings to the table. However, with commercials, they are short and highly scripted, therefore the use of deepfakes of famous (or even dead) celebrities to promote the product is going to likely happen sooner than later.

    I generally think technology, pushed by economic greed, is moving at a way faster rate than human consciousness.
    Not saying that we should not seek progress, just that technological advancements should be accompanied by serious, deeply thoughout, WIDESPREAD discussions on their impact. Not just a couple of lawmakers and industry giants. "Philosophy" (sounds pedantic, I just mean ethical and moral discussions) is more needed nowadays than ever before, yet it's not promoted, even in schools.

And I think we're still in a relatively primitive stage of AI, but with all the work being put into crafting artificial sentience I don't doubt that AI-manufactured art could, one day (possibly into the faaar off future), be possible. We're seeing shoddy beginnings of it now, such as OpenAI generating songs from scratch and the painting robots from Cloudpainter.
      However, these are both still rely on human works as a reference point, so I'd be curious to see if art that's uniquely "robot" is possible.

    great video as usual. as someone who has worked with vfx software and even dipped a toe into the technology behind deepfakes, it's a major mixed bag. when it comes to things like de-aging, its a god send. especially if the original actor is still alive to provide reference. but rebuilding someone from the dead like Cushing for Rogue One is a massive undertaking and can quickly dive into the uncanny valley if done wrong. it also take away from the actor themselves, how terrible would it be for some amazing young actor to turn in the performance of their lives, only to have a producer decide to slap someone more famous on top and that celeb gets all the credit. like i said, a mixed bag. i recommend looking into the tech they used for The Irishman, its pretty revolutionary and was created because DeNiro and Scorsese didn't want to be bothered with drawing dots on the actors for a 3+ hour movie. they put the performances over the tech and it worked, and by "worked" i mean it forced the guys behind the scenes to come up with something new. a new problem created a new solution, that's innovation.
    also, katie holmes shots fired! lol ...but i totally agree, Gyllenhaal is a much better actress
    *ps love the reference cosplay, BR2049 is a personal favorite

    I can see where this can happen for a filmmaker who writes a role for a specific actor. It just wouldn’t work with anyone else but there’s the chance the actor in question is occupied with a different project or is just not interested. They’d still be able to make the film. Just crazy 😞

    On the subject of replacing humans altogether in the creative process, the technology isn't _nearly_ there yet but there's nothing magical about human creativity. We process data into other data, there's no reason to believe a computer couldn't do the same thing; even if the input data is a lifetime of experiences and the output data is a song, a story, or a nuanced performance.

    I feel like this would be great to age actors down for teen dramas, that way they don't have to deal with young actors limited work hours and school schedule, while not having a 30yo pretend to be a teenager, giving teenagers awful self image issues. As well as making younger versions of an actor for flashbacks. Replacing an entire human being tho, is a bit too much. I think it should sort of be like organ donors, if you want you can sign up for it in life, maybe explaining what kinds of roles you'd consent to, so they can use your image after death, and make it impossible to transfer the ability to sign this to anyone else, so it's not used as currency. It could also help for things like avoiding having kids on set, or creating scars or non human creatures, like werewolves, giants, etc.
    Honestly this whole thing is giving me the vibe that soon enough the line between videogames and movies will be pretty blurred. It reminds me of how games like Detroit or life is strange are made, using people and animating on top of them, the only difference between that and an entire movie of deepfakes would be the options, and we have books where you can choose your own adventure, why not movies too?... and now what's a narrative game, and what is a movie?

    Smells like humanity's fear of the death of its own perceived significance. Given enough time, we'll innovate ways to rid us of what makes us human in the first place, and many will welcome it with open arms. Ethics are fool's game, though, in my opinion. Because even if you save the butterfly, you just end up starving the spider.
    Love your videos, btw. Really thorough stuff.

    • @drearmouse9510
      @drearmouse9510 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @drearmouse9510
      @drearmouse9510 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ab ab Don't blame me for your lack of understanding. And I made no such assertion. An "excuse." lol. I couldn't care less about what's to be done about any ethical conundrum. You're personally invested. That's why you take issue.
      Righteousness (or ethics) are determined by the majority. That's why it's a fool's errand to find an absolute answer to any problem as it's purely subjective en mass. But I digress, goin off on a bit of a tangent. Either way. Form a substantive argument, assume less, and maybe you'll get a better answer.

    I got the Blade Runner reference and was going to comment and then caught the comment right at the end. I think it was a good choice.
    I totally agree about the human element in acting but a good analogy might be synthesised music. This was a big deal back in the eighties. There was a fear about synthesisers doing away with orchestras which obviously has not happened. Equally though, we might now be at the stage where very few people could reliably tell the difference between an orchestra playing a piece of music and a top of the range synthesiser replicating it. At this point, the 'human' element argument loses its power as it is something which passes by large swathes of the audience. Let's face it, we are all susceptible to this. We might be expert enough in one field to suspect a fake when we see it/hear it/taste it but we can all get caught out somewhere along the line.
    I do fear for the Blade Runner dystopian type future. We've been flirting with this as a civilisation for such a long time now and the invention of the internet accelerated the possibility. I think we have to trust that the younger generation, burdened as they are with all the other junk which has been bequeathed to them ( you ), will be used to the idea that the only way out of all of this potential hell is through working together and just having a little respect. It is a lesson which feels a little lost on previous generations, my own included.
    Thanks for the video. Very interesting.

    Great video. Good explanation of everything involved. One issue: How would deep faked actors/characters that don’t exist - your Hollywood Frankenstein - be different from animation or video game characters? What would be the difference from “Who Killed Roger Rabbit” or the latest Disney Pixar character when compared to a deep faked independent actor? What do you think is the difference between this concept and things like Vtubers?

    Instructions unclear: will proceed to binge all of Black Mirror.
    In all seriousness it's just going to be horrendously abused long before lawmakers will catch up. I absolutely foresee producers and directors refusing to sign on talent unless they sign away their publicity rights in regards to deepfakes. This... has already been happening. Jet Li refused a part within the Matrix trilogy because the Wachowskis wanted to spend several months filming Jet Li's moves to be stored in a digital library... that they would retain the rights to after filming. Li refused to let himself be used in such a way, but Jet Li is Jet Li: he'll be fine regardless if he signs that deal. But how many up and coming or struggling actors will sign the deal, only to find the studio fires them the second they make it big and rely instead on a digital homunculus? New talent would largely be mined for new deepfakes to add into the rotation of long-standing digital ghosts and doppelgangers.
    As mentioned, media would devolve into just a few focus-test and corporate board room approved faces. The magic of theatre is that no two showings of the same show will the be same: even with an identical cast. There is this organic spark every time the curtain rises. When going into a media world driven by deepfakes... the last vestige of this spark that carried over onto the silver screen would be dead. Gone would be the subtle changes in an actor as they mature throughout their career, spontaneous moments of golden improv, or just creative decisions needed to work around actors and their schedules. Apocalypse Now's ending was entirely the result of Marlon Brando being too drunk and fat to appear throughout the movie. So the director did what he could, and the end result was one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history.
    A deep-fake heavy industry would just be creatively soulless and dead... on top of being horrendously unethical. Hollywood is one of the most corrupt and unethical industries out there. There is 0 chance they'll use this technology with restraint. The industry originally treated actors as slaves and corporate products more than people. Actors would be given studio approved personas and fired if they broke character even in their private lives. And just look at poor Judy Garland... uppers in the morning, downers in the evening, working every waking moment of her life. Look at that fucking pig Harvey Weinstein and all the other slimeballs like him. Hollywood has always seen their talent as disposable assets to be exploited for maximum profit, and deepfakes celebrities will be no different.
