17 years ago I was jumped and brutally beaten by 6 to 10 guys outside of a bar. Teeth broken, internal brain swelling , both eyes swollen shut, permanent cuts on the head jaw closed for a month I can go on and on but if any good came of it it's the hard lessons I learned that day. I really respect Jocko and word to the wise pay really close attention to what he is saying as he speaks from raw uncut experience I'm the field.
I really appreciated them addressing the need for balance in training while not ignoring the threat of brain damage from sparring. Listen to these guys.
Action is quicker than reaction. Bad guys tend to have the advantage in encounters. They don't have to worry about rules/department policy or what the media may or may not say about them. Traffic stops are prime examples. Best thing you can do in my opinion is NEVER get complacent. Use the resources that are available to you. BACK UP for one. Seen cops get into some tight spots with NO back up at the call. Doesn;t always guarantee safety but it's better to have someone there should things head south. There are no such thing as routine calls folks. That same domestic call from yesterday where everyone left amicably can turn deadly this time around. What about that commercial building alarm call? Probably nothing as usual right? WRONG! Complacency kills folks! Lastly, and this is almost impossible for most folks especially for the alpha male personality types but check the EGO at the door! The moment you allow an individual to push your buttons/mess with your head you WILL start to make mistakes that you would typically not make when you're thinking with a cool head. Losing professional bearing/temper could cost you at minimum disciplinary action or at worst could cost you your life/life of your partner. Keep a cool head! Stay fit! Stay frosty out there LEOs!
Great stuff! In my agency many years ago we trained with the "Teams" and several of us were embedded with the SEALs in a platoon. As well with many other major SWAT units and SPECOPS military units. In 1996 we began to adopt these methods combined with others along with paintball, then airsoft then Sims. We began to introduce combatives and basic grappling as well as some advanced methodologies for our personnel. This training is restricted to our SWAT teams. It has been extremely effective, we have over 475 team members. The most direct result of the training we do now is the ability of our personnel to control their emotions and react properly within the use of force continuum. We also tape record training events and staged confrontations that the student has to respond to cold. We also record heart rates prior and after as well as during at times. Then we counsel the student of performance improvement and enhancement.

As a progressive who believes in violence to solve specific issues hearing jocko take the time to game play these type of scenarios from am objective perspective. Frank Kelly, your right he has some great info here. BUT, I think what they forgot to talk about is the time and MONEY society is not willing to spend to train their area cops. training costs money. That includes: Time, equipment, role players, cost of possible injuries, instructors, etc etc. Police Departments look at training from that aspect
With their skills and patriotism, they can be better utilized in SWAT teams, FBI HRT, CIA SOG, and as contractors and federal agents/intelligence officers instead.
There are a lot of Police Departments that do the training you suggest, mine included, ground fighting, sims, shoot house, we train rapid entry for active shooter, ballistic shield work, room clearing...I've heard a lot of people lately assuming cops don't get high level training. I think it's true of super small departments and super big departments seems to be where the training seems to degrade.
This is excellent. It makes so much sense that you wonder why police depts don't train this way. I'm sure there are political/logistical/staffing issues, but this kind of training could save both civilian and police lives.
Because they FIRE all the cops that aren't willing to kill the civilian quickly LITERALLY.... The whole system is sick and anyone who is mentally healthy and actually wants to help and especially if they say something about other cops actions will get pushed out of the force. Because it call attention to how cops DIDN'T have to kill ppl.

CBS news just had a bit about drug use and profiteering in the seal community. There were current and former SEALS that talked about a quite professionalism that used to be in the community that has been eroded. What is your take?
I watched this horrific video of a cop getting murdered because he let an aggressive guy go back to his vehicle and pick up a rifle. I've heard that this video now informs police policy about letting someone go back to their vehicle.
We don’t always have any “cover” to get to that you speak so highly of. We’re called to non-predictable scenes. And, we don’t have the luxury of a full fireteam. Sometimes backup is MINUTES away. Leaving us there by ourselves. I’ve been in a stand-off with a compound bow. In that split second- in that moment- when we DONT have hard cover, or backup,and no amount of sparring or jujitsu or clinching knees in Muay Thai will help. No military training. LEO training won’t help. When the time arises, nothing really matters that much.
I respect Jocko and I listen every week, but I think it is time for Jocko to have Governor Jesse Ventura on the podcast. I am a huge Chris K fan but I do BELIEVE he lied about Governor Ventura, and I am no Ventura fan. Jocko always preaches how you have to engage with who you are dealing with, don't be scared of dealing with problems head on, and it would be a great interview. I want Jocko to ask Jess is Chris knocked him out straight up and see how Jocko handles Jesse's reaction. And how Jocko reacts to Jesse. I know Jocko and Chris were great friends so this is going to put Jocko in one of those uncomfortable positions when Jesse calls Chris a coward. I want to see how Jocko reacts. It would be priceless. It isn't conflict it is a conversation. What I want to hear from Jocko, Marcus, and all the SEALS that took Chris's side is hate Jesse for the right reason. He is kook and he was against the Iraq war. I never believed I am for the troops but against the war. I am either your with us or your against us. If we a sending soldiers into harms way you have to support the war and the troops. Chris did NOT tell the truth period.
Every profession needs more training. The lady who made my chicken sandwich at subway needs more training. SEALS get killed in combat so they need more training. Cops need it too, however, its not necessarily the training. These men and women are doing jobs that no one could truly prepare for. Mental health crisis. Active shooters. Hostage situations. Domestics. Strangulation. Delivering babies. The list goes on and on for officers. There really isn't anything they don't do. If you were to train them in every area they cover they would be in training all day every day learning. Truly, the citzens need to be held accountable for their actions and maybe receive training on how to be decent human beings. We are falling apart man.
You know people wear shirts or coats or sweaters right? Gis simulate those fighting situations. Where I live, it can be 20 below in the winter, so you better be prepared to fight in those types of conditions. Carry on.

Credible Police Departments DO train this way throughout the country. Simunitions, force on force, "red man" padded suits...all very very common.
It’s mostly about Police Budgets. There’s not a whole lot of money to pay for the training and manpower.
