After a loooong process, I've been picked up by my local police department and I start the academy in a few weeks! The information you guys put out has been super helpful throughout the whole process!
Started the academy 17 years ago. Just remember it’s a game. Best advice I got was be good, but forgettable all at the same time. You never wanna be the best or the worst, you’ll get all the attention from the instructors. You wanna be the grey man. Just make sure you pass. You can stand out once you’re on probation and learning the job.
I start academy beginning of January, I'll be 40 years old, but I am working hard every single day to become so fit that the physical aspect will not be my downfall. I know this would be the case as I have failed out of an academy previously due to not being physically prepared. Put in more work than you are expecting from the academy, because I assure you, it's going to be tough. Good luck to you all!
What are you doing to prepare? I'm the same age but female and am terrified of making it that far and being let go from the academy because I'm not fit enough. I'm not young enough to try again. I'm working out but would like to hear your routine
@@PP-jq9bspush ups, sit ups and lots of running.
I'm 39 just turned in my application for law enforcement, been in the fire service for years. I stay in pretty good shape.
@@PP-jq9bs running calisthenics , hit training ! Eat healthy
Starting the academy in 1 month, at 26, keep these videos coming! Thanks guys!
How has it been?
@@someguy6135 Just a few weeks in, lots of studying mostly Penal Codes but so far I’m enjoying it!
Great vid I'm still in the academy, got injured & recycled, outside of reputation I find the mistakes part is spot on. No matter how perfect someone is be it the academy, graduated etc at some point mistakes are made best thing to do is own it and try preventing doing the same ones again. Everybody eats some crow sometimes
I’m in week 20/24 . Great advice guys! Each Sgt is going to be different. We got lucky and had a sergeant that competes in Iron Man competitions so his PC is intense😂. My best advice would be control the controllable you can control how well you listen and apply the concepts they teach you each thing in the academy serves a purpose you just might not see it yet. They are trying to teach you. You can control your uniform and your behavior,be comfortable being in the uncomfortable, each week gets easier!
I went through the academy in 1995, this is GREAT advice!!!!!
Just completed my third week at the academy! It’s been a blast. Extremely difficult but totally worth it! Great tips guys, especially the fitness part.
Hey, do you guys write a lot in class?
@@someguy6135 yes, we take a lot of notes. I’m not sure what state you’re in and how long your academy is but ours is equivalent to an associates degree as far as hours go.
@@meeeegeeee how is a typical school day? Like What do you all do in class? Like do you take notes based on what the teacher says out loud, or from your book?
@@someguy6135 typical day starts with DT (defensive tactics) or PT (physical training) for the first couple hours. Then we shower and head to class, break for lunch, and then back to class until the end of the day and twice a week we end with a couple hours of jiujitsu. We also have cleaning duties before we leave.
As far as note taking goes, most of the instructors are good about telling us what to write down (what’s going to be on the test). They either highlight stuff in the power points or just say things like “you might want to write that down” or “you’ll probably see that again”. They also do reviews with us and ask us very similar questions to those on the test to make sure we know the test material.
At the end of the day, none of them want us to fail, they want everyone to pass so they’re going to do their best to set us up for success.
@@meeeegeeee are the test multiple choose? Or do you have to write in your answers?
Currently self sponsored 20 weeks into the academy and just took my poly yesterday! You guys gave solid advice, especially the shut your mouth part 😂
Those who continue to blindly support the "thin blue line gang" in 2024 demonstrate a significant lack of awareness regarding the current realities of law enforcement in this country.
Take a screenshot of the list provided and then search for the corresponding TH-cam channels. By watching their videos, you will gain a deeper understanding of the realities facing law enforcement today. This will inform you about the factors contributing to the perception that being a police officer is no longer a noble profession.

Sounds like basic training in the military. I was recommended for a commanders coin by my Drill Sergeant in basic because i always made sure I was last. I made sure all my squad and platoon got across the line. Also, a big tip is anticipate and prepare for multiple scenarios.
Appreciate you guys taking the time to help those in need God speed 📈
Great video Kyle and Mark. I hope to be there late 24 or early 25. Lots of good advice as always. Stay safe and thanks for the info.
Thank you. Good luck!
Awesome advice. Love to see more videos like this!
Thank you!
Hopefully starting the academy soon had to get my GED first as I dropped out getting i already feel super accomplished hopefully that day I graduate the academy I will truly see all my hard work come together
Starting in a few weeks! Thank you!
Best of luck. Keep us posted on progress.

Good luck 🍀!!
I’m 25 and really want to be an officer. I have never been a drinker, smoked/drugs, or a party guy. I usually just spend my time in the gym, read, and play my guitar. I don’t know where to even start. I was planning at going to my local police academy and see if I can apply and join. But im worried I won’t even be allowed to have a chance
Have my psych evaluation this Friday then the academy is next looking forward to it
Great tips. I think you guys need to reboot the original Police Academy movie.
That would be epic.
Great suggestions gentlemen. Is there a duty knife or two that you’d suggest? My son in law finishes the academy soon and I’d like to get him set up. Thanks
(Prior military service) Im thinking about joining the Academy and was wondering after u pass the academy what happens next? Do you go back home and apply for a job in your local area yourself or are you in a sworn contract and a bus transports u directly to a reception like area where u start ur contract?
The not a cop thing is dependent upon your state. In the state i am in. The second you are sworn in you are a full police officer. Yes you have to go to the academy but not right away. You can work the street, make arrests, write tickets, etc
I would love to be sheriff..👮♂️🚔
I got accepted! I start in 3 weeks
Hell yeah!! Keep us posted!
Know it all's tank almost every time. Or struggle. Especially people with prior experience. Be humble. FITNESS is definitely #1 As an instructor, I saw more recruits fail due to weight/fitness issues more than any other issue. We can teach shooting and report writing. We can't do push ups or fight on the mat for you.
DICLAIMER: I AM NOT SAYING YOU SHOULD QUIT. 99% of people going in are committed and have made the choice to go. A few just think it would be cool to be a cop. So, if at some point you are certain this is not for you, there is no shame in resigning.
I have seen timid and scared people push themselves to the point of a breakdown over fear and stress once they see the reality of the job. You WILL get yourself or somebody else hurt/killed. I'm NOT saying quit when it gets tough. They just never accepted the reality of the violence and emotional trauma. I have seen several quit after a bad call during an academy ride along or after seeing training videos of cops getting killed. Just always know yourself and what is best for you. We always respected people who chose not to go ahead when they knew in was not for them.
I went to a Los Angeles are academy back in the 80s. Prior military got less attention from cadre than the others. Didn't find it that hard. Just know there will be a firearms inspection after a night shoot when you were only going to get about 2 hours sleep.
I’m should be due for the academy in March of next year. I’m 43 at time of entry. I’m in pretty good shape for my age but admittedly I’m not much of a runner. Due the start you off full bore or due they work you up to the long runs?
Wow spellcheck is off its game today lol
I'm also in my 40s, and I am considering it. From what I can tell from my research you want to be in at least fair shape (able to run say 2 miles at a 9min/mile pace) when you go in, but it is built up from there. It apparently differs WILDLY academy to academy, some run 6-9 miles a day, some run 1.5 miles a day. Also, it depends on who is in running the training. You might get the guy who thinks "I have never had to run 2 miles after a suspect so we aren't doing that" or you might get the guy who thinks running a marathon is easy, so he wants to do 6 mile runs and thinks that is being easy. So, class A might have it easy and class B might have it hard for the same academy. Personally, I am using logic: I see people I KNOW I am stronger than in the graduation pictures, so it can't be THAT hard, but better to train to be overqualified than be under qualified. Just being real: Almost all police are trying to get more women in, and on average women aren't as good runners as men, so we are going by what they can handle. It's not different standards on age and gender like the military. So, its designed so that an average 40 year old woman who puts in some effort can pass. Like I said, I looked at graduation pics/videos and I was like "if that person can pass, I sure as hell can"
I already know if I decide to do it, and make it in, I will get the trainer that will say day one: "I like to run, and I don't like to run slow, keep up with me" and I will sigh to myself "of course" so, I'm prepping for that. Worst case, if I decide not to do it or don't get in, ill have lost a few pounds and be in better shape.
Great video, gents.
What is the reasoning for departments using "Extreme Response Teams" in unmarked cars to perform regular traffic stops. I've seen several videos where it ended badly.
Any advice on the various aspects of field training, especially officer safety ?
Just passed board, pysch and medical. What advice would you give a 36 year old Dad chasing a life long dream.
The work never ends bud. Good luck!
👍
Wow. Here in Illinois you cant start until your 21
Here’s a topic idea for you guys. You guys should interview a FEMALE cop and what is like being cop as a woman.
Is it tougher than bootcamp? Or about the same?
They had forums back then. It wasn’t the 90s
Midwest and east coast academies seem easier than CA POST
Yinz need to do a video with Detective Thornton. I think ya could help make some changes, you seem like good men.
Thank god one of y’all has a preposterously long beard so I know I can take this super seriously.
My ear still hurts from Kyle yelling at me!!!!
Cry baby 😭
Graduate next week still watched to see if i did it right lol
So how was your experience in class?
