High tempo units like SF/SEALS/PJ's etc. have the funding to do that level training while on the opposite end of the spectrum many support units have to use creative accounting just to get basic remedial training. Like most with the Big Heads and Egos they're the first ones calling distress while my dad knew more ways to have a bad guy in hand cuffs with pressure point moves that I know from experience would have me screaming like a banche! Never had my father had to kneel on somebody's back or head or even shoot his gun at somebody who didnt ask for it. Man thank you for giving people that insight! Just a couple weeks ago when I heard defund the police, I thought exactly how Jocko is. Aside from the fraction of lunatics, they have a decent point with meaning to reallocate that extra money. However, like he said, as a black person I would much rather it go into training.
I already knew law enforcement training was short and varies, but you really put it into perspective.
I have 2 other theories of what might help, one being to fire officers for “smaller” issues that might lead to the death of someone, so that way it would force every other officer to be held to a higher standard so they don’t lose their job. I like hearing about what people have to say about all this and what they think would help. A lot better on here than twitter too, on there you would’ve gotten bombarded with “You didn’t get proper training? Your the fucking devil for staying as an officer!”

Jocko is 100 percent right about this. I left police work exactly because of how people feel about police in this day and age. I grew tired of being called a racist and being screamed at because some yahoo is watching a felony traffic stop and I've got my gun out. I grew tired of being harassed by people shoving their camera phones in my face even though I have a body cam. And I could give a shit if someone filmed me. I don't care. But I did care when people would interfere in the hopes of "going viral". I miss it. I really do, but I'm in a trade now and doing pretty good. And he's right about training. We got 8 hours of hand to hand and 8 hours of ground fighting in the academy. That's it. And for in-service training once a year, we got 8 hours for both. Thankfully, one of the guys in my old agency is a BJJ blackbelt and would hold training sessions for anyone that wanted to show up. There were maybe 30 of us total out of 200 or so deputies that would show up. I miss it every day pretty much, but I can't go back and I pray for my brothers and sisters in blue every day.

    • @YamatoTre
      @YamatoTre ปีที่แล้ว

Well, the amount of officers that turn off or have "malfunctioning" body cams is a little weird. So if I were you, I'd shut my mouth about things that are perfectly legal. Are you American? "I don't care about being filmed" but you sure do have a lot of resentment about it. What are you doing that you can't be filmed? Wouldn't you be suspicious if some guy didn't let you search his bag or car? Well they're searching your conduct. Deal with it, snowflake.

Thank you, Jocko. This is a well respected US Navy SEAL, telling the country the truth. In my state all that is required to maintain certification is a 24hrs of training a year. Early on in my career I used sick leave to attend a 5 day training course, that was geared towards to ground fighting. The first day we spent 6 hrs in the classroom, the final two hours were spent getting familiar with the simunition glocks, and AR's that we would use for scenarios. The next day we began scenarios immediately. The first few scenarios were all handled using no force at all. I went to lunch, and the first scenario, I was called to a bar fight. As I walked into the "bar" and was immediately grabbed by two guys and the 3rd strolled over and shot me in the head...

Here in my hometown Austin, Tx, city council officially defunded our police department, removing $150 million dollars from its budget and getting rid of 80-90 police officers. In one of the fastest growing cities in America. I was in the hiring process of becoming a police officer, my life long dream, and to hear this news was horrific. And I can no longer achieve my goal. All scheduled academies have been canceled and there is no sight of it starting again anytime soon.

He saw it as a public service more like fire dept then..

I was a cop in Baltimore for several years before I was able to leave for a different job. Best thing I ever did. In Baltimore, while I was in academy they used us as test subjects for the new applicant test to get in to the department. It was far easier than the test I took and was mostly matching faces of people. While in the academy many of my class mates regularly failed written test and were able to take them again. Then if they failed again they went to another room and always came back with a passing grade.
They lower the standards every year because they can't keep enough officers to do the job.
You are pressured to answer calls and get disciplined if you take to long on a call. Some calls take time to do right but they don't give you the time. It was a terrible place to work, the corruption was bad and most of the command staff are so out of touch with policing it's sad. Also a lot of the command staff would be lucky to have an education higher than a G.E.D. The best predictor for job performance is intelligence...

I agree with Jocko on a lot of what he says. My dad was a deputy sheriff for 32 years. He has severe PTSD to the point where he barely talks to people and will randomly get upset even when nothing goes on. He’s told me stories about having to talk down relatives of suicide victims, he saw a man kill himself during a standoff, he had to talk to a child who was a victim of rape, and he once had to hold a little girl in his arms who was shot as she died. That drained the man. Seriously drained the life from him. He’s 63 and looks like he’s 73. There needs to be breaks for cops every few months where they can decompress, and get help. There needs to be support for them. All my dad got was a tiny pension and a fuck you very much for all his service. And he was lucky compared to his partner Jerry who retired in poverty and died of cancer. Defund the police?! Mother fuckers we need to triple their funding and help these people. Jocko for sheriff.

@@littlebiglsteele4158 I don’t agree. Every time we take away from cops we see more crime. Public works and social programs have existed for decades and done nothing because they aren’t aimed at helping the poor to get out of that life but rather to reward them and incentivize them to stay poor. There are endless programs for poor, female and minorities to get free education, lunches at schools and laws that dictate that a company must have a minimum number of minorities, women and people with alternative sexualities and yet in spite of all of it, we see no improvement because it’s easier to just kick back and take a check from the government. Having lived in a county that’s filled to the brim with this type of nonsense, I can assure you that more funding for this crap does t help. What does help is families acting like families. Communities coming together to have each other’s backs. But that requires us to get off our asses and be uncomfortable but god forbid anyone sweat a little and maybe help their neighbor out by babysitting or shoveling their driveway or even just inviting them over for dinner or even a beer to watch the game. The problem isn’t a money issue. It’s a “we don’t want to have to deal with it ourselves” issue. And trust me as someone who lives in a town where the cops are just scraping by and it’s easier to get on welfare than to get a job, the results are disastrous. Be the change you want to see my friend.

@@concordetconstabulary219 the "people living off welfare" is an absolutely exagerated myth. And i dint think its fair to boil this down to a sinple cultural issue either. The social safety nets in america are not nearly enough and putting good ones in place will not lead to people living off handouts. No country with better programs has that problem. Also dont you think people would be more likely to have that sense of community if they were payed more and were less stressed from living paycheck to paycheck and thus had more time to do so.

@@littlebiglsteele4158 the issue of living paycheck to paycheck is a result of two things. Life choices and taxes. Lower taxes and companies can pay people better.
Regarding your “exaggerated myth” accusation. Have you lived in a blue state before versus a red or purple state? California, New York, Illinois, Michigan and Massachusetts have some of the highest taxes, and highest social programs and yet have the highest crime rates despite spending ungodly amounts of tax payer money on social programs and having the strictest gun laws in the nation. Why they don’t completely fail is due to the federal government bailing them out. Look at red states like Texas, Kentucky, Georgia, and Arizona and you’ll see booming markets because they tax people far less.
Regarding “other countries have done this and had no issues” argument. The United States is the power house of the world. The Unites States army has bases in every single socialist nation to act as protection. These nations that have so much money for said social programs do not face the burden of raising a military to guard other nations. Also the United States is far more ethnically diverse than these socialist nations. With diversity come disagreements. A devout Muslim from Saudi Arabia is not going to have the same values as an agnostic bi sexual open relationship couple in the United States. An African American family that is highly religious is not going to have the same values as a bohemian German family. White poor people from the country side are not gonna have the same values as urban African Americans or even urban whites. That’s just a taste of what this country is comprised of and yet we are all expected to get along and live as one people. There are going to be conflicts here you won’t see in Norway where the biggest conflict they face is snow. I know it’s not politically correct but “diversity” isn’t a strength. It’s a liability because people who come from different backgrounds, don’t always get along. Hell just put a white liberal and a white conservative from the same state in a room together and they can’t even get along. America faces issues that these nations don’t. America isn’t like these nations for a reason. And trying to be like them isn’t going to work because America by design isn’t supposed to work like these nations.
I mean no offense to you. You seem like a good hearted person and I will extend an olive branch and agree that community can’t solve every single issue. Government should be run based on morals. Laws should be ratified or struck down for moral reasons. And I’ll even go so far as to say police shouldn’t be decked out in military style gear for everyday patrols short of bad neighborhoods. But I’ve been around police my entire life. I’ve seen these things with my own eyes. I don’t say the things I say to be cruel. I say them because I’ve seen these policies pushed and fail time and again and again. We the people need to step up more. Yes police should be trained more for peace keeping than for fighting but the sad reality is their job is to put themselves in these situations. And when you have less than a second to respond to a threat, you are going to make mistakes. It’s easy to dissect the problem when sitting from afar but when your in the shit it’s all or nothing.

    This was SO insightful.
You have to train, you have to experience a situation BEFORE you experience the situation. Your body will get scared if it's not second nature to your mind. Your body will get scared, and go fight or flight. You get trigger happy and terrified.

I like it as well, but it's a half measure.
When you listen, his take is about "identifying bad actors" in the community, but nothing addresses the "bad actor" in a badge

Places across the world have this, literally everyone should hope to implement community relationships so we can stop killing each other for stupid reasons. Guns really need to go too creates and unbalance in a persons mentality
