Retired Navy Seal, globally recognized leadership expert and author of one of the most empowering books ever, “Extreme Ownership”, Jocko Willink knows all about making an impact. And now he is finally on Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu! In this episode, Jocko Willink details his leadership principles and explains how to apply them. He also talks about building relationships and trust, understanding human nature, and learning to control your ego and emotions. And he even takes some time to share his newest undertaking, writing children’s books.
    SHOW NOTES:
People asked how to apply leadership principles, so Jocko wrote his new book on tactics [2:07]
Jocko tells the war story of how he learned to take a step back and detach [4:38]
Jocko explains how he learned to avoid arrogance and to listen to people [8:48]
Jocko then explains how he learned that he doesn’t always need to be the leader [11:33]
Jocko advocates the importance of relationships and building trust [14:25]
Jocko asks questions instead of making statements when disagreements arise [19:43]
Jocko compares manipulation and leadership [23:14]
If you want to be a good leader, you need to understand human nature [29:01]
Jocko talks about why it’s so important to control your emotions [30:45]
Jocko advocates learning jiu jitsu to help you control your ego and emotions [32:29]
Jocko explains how to gain influence and respect [35:07]
Jocko and Tom talk about Jocko’s children’s books [36:21]
But seriously, if you’ve never checked out Jocko’s children’s books you really should [40:00]
Jocko and Tom discuss how to focus on improvement instead of talent [43:44]
Jocko talks about standing up to bullies [45:32]
Jocko shares the impact he wants to have on the world [49:01]
    QUOTES:
“If I’m manipulating you, I’m trying to get you to do something that’s gonna benefit me. If I’m leading, I’m trying to get you to do something that’s gonna benefit you, that’s gonna benefit the team, and it’s gonna benefit the mission.” [24:47]
“It’s OK to be inexperienced as a leader. You can get through that as long as you’re humble, and you listen, and you take advice from other people. You should be able to do fine. No one expects you to know everything as a leader.” [9:07]
“When I look back at my career in the navy, in the seal team, just about every single thing that I ever did was through relationships.” [15:58]

@@MrBraffZachlin His position is never about "dont ask questions do as your told", you're going off of his appearance rather than his message. Many men in the military are extremely hardheaded and want to be on their own path in life, not sheep led to a slaughter. Don't assume the military is full of morons willing to die because big jocko told them to. It's not. It's full of people. And people want to be in control of their life.
You know what people also want to be in control? The kids that are raped, tortured, and murdered in front of their families by organizations in the middle east. The women that are amputated and blinded, barely kept alive for the worst scum on the planet to fuck repeatedly whenever they want. Sometimes for a message to the others to prevent cooperation with other forces and sometimes just for the hell of it. Plenty of men understand this. And plenty of men are willing to die to stop it.
There is corruption in every system including the military. It's not perfect. I'm sure some company influences the powers that be at some level to attack city A rather than city B even if, to an unbiased eye, city B is the better choice. But we don't live in some fully corrupted system that is sending hordes to die for absolutely nothing. No group of men with any value for themselves in a country like ours would constantly volunteer their lives to die for an unknown or superficial cause. If you heard the personal stories from the men sent to do the work you'd have a better perspective on this than one fueled entirely by anger and skepticism.

I love how he is able to clearly express a path towards developing confidence without ego.
Many of the really fired up take charge leader type people i know have a tendency to elevate themselves above everyone else and mistake their ego for being the thing that enables them to lead, rather than understanding their ego is the root of many problems they keep having to deal with over and over again. Often issues with insubordination or projects constantly not running smooth and production goals not being easily met.
Many of the extremely humble supportive understanding people i know aren't very assertive, if at all. They often seem to view taking control of a situation and dictating the groups direction as arrogance or being a control freak. When these people are in charge, the same thing happens where they often have to deal with the same issues over and over again....usually a subordinate making a huge mistake or a frustrating job with lots of unexpected complications becoming chaotic.

That moment when the others took his direction and repeated his command as a newbie, “hold left, clear right”, I very well may have been the catalyst to Jocko truly seeing himself as capable of being a leader.
    Those little moments matter.
    Great show!
