Sony A7IV compressed VS uncompressed RAW

  • Sony A7IV compressed VS uncompressed RAW
    I am not going to beat around the bush here. I am changing to compressed RAW files for photos. I don't see a significant enough difference between uncompressed and compressed RAW to photography otherwise. I prefer to have the extra 4-5 frames per second in burst mode and get the shot I need.
    Compressed RAW is half the file size, and you are able to get more frames per second with little to no image quality loss.
    This wasn't a completely scientific review but it includes real world photos and testing and also some studio testing. It is safe to say compressed RAW will suit majority of people for many different needs.

    Hey Jason thanks for the video. I shoot lossless compressed I think that's a good middle ground. As far as pixel peeping goes I don't think you will see a huge difference but when it comes down to editing photos I think that's where that extra info comes into play with how far you can push and pull the colors. Anyway great info keep it up 🤙

    Thank you so much Jason! I've been confused why my frame rate wasn't as fast as advertised, and switched it into compressed (just like you did) and just felt like such a dummy lol. You're right, the difference between that many frames per second versus a minuscule image quality difference has a clear winner! It's compressed from now on for me!

    Very helpful and informative! I've also noticed when I export jpegs out of Photoshop and I can choose between good and very good and excellent and great which all produce a different number of megapixels for the jpeg, there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference in the appearance of those files also. A JPEG that is less than half a megabyte looks very much like a JPEG that's 3 MB. I think that deserves a closer look also because those saved jpegs are what often end up filling my computer up.

    I don't shoot massive numbers of photo's so the space isn't an issue, but having the extra information is a bit of a safety net while I learn to post-process. eventually I will switch back when I shoot more and know what I am doing in post LOL.

    Watching this, I have seen the difference in grain look, with uncompressed detail being more recognizable and more natural.
    As it was said, it's like a difference between 34mp and 33mp, very very small and hard to catch.
    Actually watching conparisons, more colors should be the biggest difference, well, as seen, nore colors do add a little of detail, that miniscule one.
    What bugs me the most is tho, uncompressed grainy detail looked more natural(other yt video), I would prioritize lossless compressed if I needed spewd tho.
    6fps vs 8fps or even 10fps is a difference.
    I shoot raw+jpeg, so just shooting raw only may help too.
    As I moved on to A7IV now, I will be happy with no limit in vurst for now, its great to know the difference however.
    Big thanks.

      Yeah, I shoot lossless compressed. It's the best way to ensure the data is accurate without sacrificing too much in the way of file size. I do wonder if Sony does some tinkering with the lossless compression to remove some well-known sensor noise or something though. This would at least account for observed differences in the histogram. Interesting stuff though, the whole conversation reminds me of the mp3 vs flac vs wav conversations for audio.

      yup, you're correct. With compressed raw, your computer has to uncompressed it to view it. So having a faster and stronger cpu will help with compressed RAW files. It does get annoying though when viewing compressed photos on Lightroom especially when you have 1000+ to photos as each photo can take 2-3 seconds to clearly load even from an SSD. And when you just want to speed through it, you really can't do that. So we gotta chose either space or time.

    Sony's lossy raw compression just reduces color precision. It only uses 7-bits of precision over 16 pixel horizontal stripes. An underexposed picture may only require 7-bits to encode the entire image, but the Sony compression only has to work with 16-pixels. An ideal black and white test chart only needs 1-bit of precision.

    It sounds like it's a use-case question. There's no debate about whether uncompressed files retain more data: they do. However, in situations like sports, wildlife, or events, the difference isn't so substantial that it's worth sacrificing higher frame rates. However, for studio work, product photography, or anything with a controlled set, I see no reason not to take advantage of uncompressed raw's benefits.

  • @harryvuemedia5106
    @harryvuemedia5106 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If i remember correctly, you lose about 2 stops of dynamic range with compressed raw and it is just a bit more taxing on your computer since it has to always uncompressed the files when viewing them. Same goes with E-shutter, you lose about 2 stops of dynamic range. I tend to use uncompressed raw when it comes to portrait photography. I'll use compressed raw on candid and event shooting as i do like the smaller files and the faster write speed. But most of all, you can't really tell the difference too much with both formats on candid photos. So I use uncompressed for my best shots which are usually my portraits. If its there, use it!

    • @JasonMorrisphotocinema
      @JasonMorrisphotocinema  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @matrixate
      @matrixate 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, dynamic range takes a bit but if you nail the exposure, i strongly believe they're is no discernable difference until you try to shot match to another camera. Still, the extra dynamic range let's you boost that specular highlight that gives pro photos that magic sheen that you don't get with cell phones and lesser cameras. I shot uncompressed because of that but compressed for casual.

    • @harryvuemedia5106
      @harryvuemedia5106 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@matrixate true that. I used to shoot in uncompressed for everything but it took up way too much SD card space and hard drive space. Lowest i will ever go for Lossless Compressed RAW is M, never go down to S and sometimes L. I do prefer to keep as much RAW information there as possible to work with but i realized that there are a lot of candid scenes I dont need to capture in the best quality.

    I just got the a7IV today and I might not be right but - you as a film maker - raw lossless, compressed.. won't be visible on those test charts, checking lines... isn't the point of it the same as 8bit vs 10bit video? you tweak it to crazy? go uncompressed. the test should be there and not checking sharpness. of course it's the same. this is not like comparing jpegs saved in quality 12 vs in quality 3 . maybe I'm wrong, will do my own test of course :) you do great content

    I shoot compressed almost all the time, unless I'm doing a portrait to showcase the subject's eyes.

    I only shoot compressed raw since I have a73. Do not notice difference.

    The difference at 3:00 was clear, really. Is it massive? No, but it's there.

    low light is uncopressed raw is better but most part so compressed work fine. A7III you can see red ring at compreesd raw when shoot in dark/low light, but t happen only if you underexpose lot. th-cam.com/video/euVGDd3S9U8/w-d-xo.html

      Hard to compare a7iii with a7iv though as the processors are different etc.

      @@JasonMorrisphotocinema yes but think more happens in extreme low light between com and uncompressed. If you shooting right exposure = hard see any different

    You should only shoot Uncompressed when there's a lot of Dynamic Range needed in a photo

    you shoot uncompressed raw so that your PC isn't doing so much work uncompressing it so you can edit. Faster editing if your PC ain't that amazing. I have a good PC and I still use uncompressed raw, I don't like waiting forever for these images to load.

    Uncompressed Raw has way more Details makes it look sharper and 14bit color compared to 12bit color.
