- In this video I'm breaking down the differences I found between different RAW format compressions that are found in the newest Sony A7IV camera. We have 3 options to choose from - Uncompressed, Lossless Comp and Compressed and they also come with the limitation in the camera high speed shooting. But is the quality difference visible in final photos?

Thank you for this analysis. I've recently been bouncing between lossless compressed and compressed with my A1. Glad to hear I can stick with compressed and not miss out on much, but gain the true 30fps bursts.
Yup! I actually forgot that A1 also needs compressed RAWs for full speed! So at the end of the day, if you’re properly exposing your photos then you should be good to go with compressed!

Thanks for your video, is really useful and well explain the difference between the two version of raw files. Despite I take different kinds photos (wildlife) I go for compressed raw files, because there isn't difference in term of image quality, and in wildlife photography is better to have a good shooting burst, for not missing any important moment.

Thanks Magic, that's a useful insight. Like you I always shot lossless compressed on earlier Sony models, a7riii, a7riv and a9. I'm in process of adjusting my kit going forward to start embracing video as well as stills. Sold all my bodies and just taken delivery of an a7iv. The idea of buying a a7Siii, although great for video, never seemed like a good idea for stills given just 12Mb.
As I also like shooting sport, my a9 was last body to go. Hence your timely advice..... 10fps RAW lossy compressed is essentially OK unless I screw up the exposure vs 6fps lossless RAW. If and when I can stump up the funds for an a1, then it's good to know one gives up little to get 30fps - not that I can imagine often having that need for most sports work (I'm doing for fun as an amateur, not professionally where I might need to explain why I missed a shot).
That said I'm genuinely puzzled as to why Sony would 'knobble' the fps down from 10 to 6 fps if there is so little practical difference between file sizes and compression algorithms? If it's the same processor as found in the it a1, then it's unlikely that the Bionz processor is causing any 'bottlenecks effect when calculating the compressed file.

@@MagicWeddingPhotographer I really have to try it out. Currently on D7200 with lots of good glass and good flash equipment for in and out of studio shooting. Use LR/PS/Luminar Ai (and Neo coming) for editing and so far have no issues quickly creating the DOF of full frame,. Shot lots with FF (D700, D810, D850) to make the comparison. So, I'll be doing comparisons for a week or two and if I find it amazingly better I will keep it otherwise I'll stick with my current arsenal of equipment, since almost nothing is compatible. Looking forward to the testing.

Very useful thanks a lot. To be honest the main thing avoiding me to by an A7 IV compared to a Canon R6 was the obligation to compress the raws to reach 10 frames per second. Now i can be more trustful 👍

Thanks for the confirmation that lossless compressed and uncompressed is identical as per what sony claims, I can shoot lossless without any qualms
Regarding the compressed RAW , maybe it would be useful to test those scenarios that broke compressed RAW on older Sony cameras...
IIRC multiple bright spots against a black background had rings in the bright-to-dark transitions
One example of this is fireworks
I am guessing a laser pointer spot in a black room will cause the same effect.
Since the a74 has 3 custom mode slots, you could assign uncompressed to one slot and compressed to another slot.
That's what I do. Lossless compressed to setting 1, which I use for general shooting with decent to good light. I set 2 to uncompressed with a bump in iso for night shooting. I have 3 set for action mode, using compressed raw.

You should talk about the bit depths and how they change spending on drive mode and compression. You might get 12 but you might get 14 but.
If we are using a 100 mm lens on a full frame camera , at what real distance will a 1 mtr long diagonal placed rod / stick will occupy the full 35mm diagonal of frame ??

I own A7R IV ver. A. There is no RAW lossless format. I'm wonder if "compressed" means the same as "compressed" in previous A7R IV? Is there also no difference in image quality?

I'm in a beach town in Southern California and frequently shoot into a sunset. To preserve sunsets and the detail in the ocean I heavily underexpose my couples. In these common situations uncompressed raw has an advantage. I set a memory recall on my PSAM dial for uncompressed in those scenarios.
PLEASE HELP!!... I RECENTLY DID A WEDDING IN LOSSLESS COMPRESSION FORMAT. I AM NOT ABLE TO OPEN RAW FILES. BUT WHEN I SHOOT UNCOMPRESSED THEN THEY ARE TOTALLY WORKING. ONLY WHEN I SHOOT COMPRESSED THEN I AM NOT ABLE TO OPEN OR EDIT THEM. I HAVE LATEST VERSION OF LIGHTROOM CLASSIC.
My light room doesn’t open these awr files. How am i supposed to edit raw if i can’t open it?

For me I had some troubles importing my compressed RAW from A7 III. I thought Lightroom classic 2022 would uncompress the photo, but it didn't. I had to use another app to open the file. Someone here has a clue ? Thanks :)

Awesome video and really helpful....just received my A7iv and its amazing but quick question how am I able to transfer raw images from the camera to phone because every time I try to transfer raw images from the sony app the images aren't able to open in gallery only Jpeg can. Or how do you transfer your raw images?
U can change that in the settings. I can pull from my camera to my iPhone and then into lightroom.
Hi Magic! It has nothing do to with this video, but could you make a video about how you make your evening shots at the parties? They look really nice with all the different light trails and double exposures. But I don't know how to achieve that with your subject still being in focus. Thanks!

Thanks for the video and the files! I can tell the difference in quality, so I'll use uncompressed RAW! I can see little square pixels in the compressed and lossless compressed files, in the uncompressed files they look smoother, especially in the corners! Thanks again!

My guess would be that you Lr is not up to date. Sony A7IV requires the latest LR CC update

I did exactly that. Upgraded from 2xA7RIII to 2xA7IV, so I think it is :) The af system is way better, plus the bigger body grip, buttons, two fast card slots and superb video performance as a bonus :P

Note: I just received this camera two days ago from B&H along with the Sony 20mm 1.8 and the Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. I am an event and portrait hybrid shooter partially switching over from Fuji mainly because of the better autofocus, the unlimited recording time, the better lens selection and the higher megapixels. I have two X-T4 bodies with several of their best lenses and accessories and I'm going to sell one X-T4 now, if the upcoming X-T5 can compete with the A7IV, especially autofocus, then I might stay with Fuji, if not, then I'm selling ALL my Fuji gear and buying another A7IV or one of their higher flagship models. Fuji are you reading this???????????????
1. When I connect my OSEE 4k external monitor via HDMI to my brand new Sony A7IV, the monitor works great but now I can't get my LCD screen to work at the same time so I can have touch focus and touch tracking during video shooting. The LCD screen just totally goes black every time the monitor is connected. I'm looking all over the internet and TH-cam for a fix, can anybody suggest the right settings that can help me out please?
2. I can't get my Crane S2 to connect with my A7IV via the USB cable, all I really want is for the record button function on the gimble to work, everything else would just be a nice bonus. I read somewhere that it might not be possible to have both an external HDMI output and USB connectivity with the Crane S2 simultaneously. Any experts out there know the real deal????
3. I experienced a really weird bug already on just the 2nd day of practice shooting. My record button for video just wouldn't do anything, the camera was apparently just staying in standby mode, it was just displaying the green "STBY" message in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, everything looked completely normal on the LCD but I just could not record any video. I switched over to photos and that was fine. Turning the camera on and off did not work either. The only fix was dropping the battery out of the camera for a few and then when I put it back in everything was fine regarding video recording, this was weird and does not really give me a lot of confidence so far with the A7IV? Anybody else experience this weird bug? Sony are you reading this????????????? This issue got me to thinking about number 4 below.
4. Is there a newer firmware out there yet for the A7IV? My camera's currently at 1.00, if there is, what is the link?

Why do Sony ARW files come out looking processed (sat, contrast added)? My Canon cameras come out super flat.
