    Thanks for the videos Peter, they were very well organized, and out of all the ones I’ve seen were presented the best! Problem with these comparisons, and you said it yourself, is that when you take the a7iv and compare is to the a7siii, you are comparing apples to oranges. The S is over a grand more and made for video primarily and then you have the hybrid. People just don’t understand that you can’t make the A7 series the same as the S series, or you might as well just make it an S series…
    People seem to want/expect the A1 or A7siii at the price that the a7iii is currently going for. Like cars, clothes, RC cars, computers…there are levels to this. You can’t expect a rock crawler to also perform like a lambo!

    Helpful information as always, Peter! Did you have a chance to compare stabilization and 4K 50/60p rolling shutter between the SIII and 7IV? Curious how they compare on those 2 fronts. I know both now have the Active stabilization available now, just wondering if they are indistinguishable or one is better than the other on that front. Some of the reviews I've watched with regard to rolling shutter at 4K/24p on the 7IV appeared disappointing and not an improvement over the 7iii, but I'd love to see a stacked comparison between the [cropped in] 4K 100/120p on the 7IV and Siii. I think there's a story there...

    I chose the a7IV (arriving tomorrow) because Im a photographer who shoots video. The APS-C crop at 4K60p isn't a big deal to me, pretty much every cinema camera has a sensor right around that same size anyways. Plus at 4K24 and 30, the IV downsamples from 7K, something the a7SIII can't even come close to matching. I thought all the video guys always say to shoot at 24fps anyways? I'll take video shot in 7K over video shot in 4.2K all day every day. They are both great cameras but Id rather have the much better resolution and a more capable photo camera than full 4K60 shot at only 4.2K.

    I could notice the difference. The a7SIII has a smoother colour and highlight/shadow transition that pushes it closer to the FX line cameras. The A7IV is detailed but has more of a digital feel. Of course, these are only evident when you compare them side by side.

    I would say: 'both camera's are great hybrid shooters, being the A7SIII leaning more to filming and the A7M3 more to stills' However I have the A7S3 and I must say, its perfect for my needs. My main things are concerts and events... for that I want superbe low light capabilities and SPEED! Before the sun comes up, my photo's have to be ready for social or else someone with a smartphone steals my place in the media.
    The A7S3 lets me take shots no one else can and the 12MP stills unload and proces lightning fast... and it would be great to have 33MP and the 3-way switch...

    pre-ordered the A7 IV yesterday with Tarmon 28-75 F2.8. Using lumix s5 right now. Cheaper hybrid than the A7 IV but the same specs(4.2.2 10Bit, 4k60p 1.5crop ect. so crop is not a big deal for me) But the sony lens line up worth the change for me if i think on the future. At my level of videography the A7SIII is OverPowered as hell AND EXPENSIVE...! If i feel confortable with the a7IV and got the right lenses for my setup. I'll MAYBE get the a7S IV in the future!
    Nice vid as always.

    I went to a festival in 2021 and I rented the a7s3 with a 70-200 and omg it was the most fun setup I've ever used. I used it for photos and video and I have to say the image quality was definitely a big step up coming from someone who regularly uses an a6300. Its a bit out of my price range but i had the most fun shooting with that and the a7s2. Currently shooting with an a6600 but nothing near what the s3 can do in terms of video and photo. The 6600 is good but not great. It does not offer the lowlight capabilities of the a7s3. That thing can shoot in straight-up pitch black. I shoot alot of concerts and festivals so having a camera that's good in lowlight like the a7s3 was a gamechanger for me. For now though I'm okay with my a6600 setup!

    First, I like your Swinglish accent. Second, I have pre-ordered the A7iv. Yes, I would love the A7Siii. That being said, I think the A7iv is more impressive than some are making it out to be. When it comes to cameras, I think more people complain about stuff that has little to do with their day to day uses of these cameras. For instance, corner sharpness. In my view, its one of the least relevant or important features in a camera. Partly because I shoot mainly video, and I think photographers are more concerned with corner sharpness than anyone else. That being said, I can't think of one time when I went to a photo gallery and even thought about looking at the corners of a photo I was viewing. Plus, I think it's hilarious when reviewers zoom in on a corner at around 300-400%, as if anyone would actually 'zoom in' that close when looking at a photo. Except for maybe a photographer.
    Anyway, there are SO many things I think people worry about when it comes to cameras that I find to be a waste of brain power that it would make my comment longer than needed.
    Bottom line. I'm getting the A7iv. And I couldn't be more excited.

    Probably going to buy this A7 IV as B cam for my A7S III. I like to shot pictures expecially when traveling and that extra "quality" will be the sweet spot. For commercial use the S and the higher frame rate with no crop is still the best for me.

  • @sasca854
    @sasca854 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The SIII's IMX510 sensor is actually a 48 megapixel design. On readout, it digitally combines 4 adjacent pixels into one (for a total of 12mp). It's almost identical to the A1's IMX610 sensor, which explains how the A1 is "magically" able to do everything the SIII can do and more, retaining all of the dynamic range and having even better noise performance, despite _seemingly_ having a much higher resolution sensor. This also means that the individual photosites on the A7IV are quite a bit _larger_ than the SIII's.

      @@julieannhobbs6456 when you shoot at 60fps the image is ‘cropped/reduced’ by a factor. From what I heard I believe it’s 1.5 time for the A7 IV. That for example means that if you have a given lens on, say a 35mm, the focal will vary when you move from 24fps to 60fps.
      It’s a bit like if you full frame would become an APSC when changing frame rate.

    Super useful camera at that price point. The elephant in the room is the horrific rolling shutter in video mode. As a note, I do find the A7S III has that creamy cinematic edge, less clinical.

  • @rickevertsz
    @rickevertsz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I don't miss the rolling shutter on A7iii. A7iv seems similar. Would stick with A7siii for that reason alone. I don't do whip pans but it's the jello effect when shooting handheld that really bothers me with A7iii. I was editing some old A7iii footage yesterday and was thinking "What's with the jello?!", then I remembered what it used to be like. A7siii is SO much better when it comes to rolling shutter.

    Peter nailed the explination.
    I mostly do event photography & video work. Sometimes special photo ops happen in seconds and in that situation, the A7IV is great for having the flexibility to crop the photos later in post. HOWEVER, if I had to pick one, it would be the A7SIII. Don't let the 12mp sensor fool you. Its great at taking photos. I've done professional gigs for photo and video with just the A7SIII.
    The reason why I got the IV was to have a capable but cheaper 2nd camera body so I didn't need to waste time swapping lenses.

    • @willawtry5119
      @willawtry5119 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really like your explanation and mentioning that the 12 megapixel still takes great photos I am coming from the A7R2 however I am now doing about 90% video work I’ve literally never crop the photo ever usually use different lenses or a 24 to 70 which pretty much covers my needs for that the 873 seems to be calling my name but I am a little bit worried with that 12 megapixel I mainly do social media work so I’m guessing the 12 megapixel photos won’t be too much of an issue for me my biggest thing about crops is that they do not change the focal compression so I tend to swap lenses anyway to get the desired focal length not just a crop do you guys think the A7S three would work for me considering I am doing primarily video and see myself using 60 frames per second quite regularly

    • @TheArtofLight
      @TheArtofLight ปีที่แล้ว

      @@willawtry5119 100% Yes! If you're doing more video work, I'd recomend getting a A7SIII or a FX3 if you're in the market for a sony system. Like you, I try to do most of the work in-camera so cropping isn't much of an issue for my type of filming. Otherwise, I've done event & corporate photos and videos with the A7SIII with no complaints or issues.While the megapixel count is smaller than most, the megapixel size is physically bigger and allows for better dynamic range. great for low light and extreme high noon desert lighting. I've had my A7SIII for a little over a year and I have no complaints other than the memory cards needed to shoot at higher framerates are extremely expensive, so i'd look into that before purchasing. I'm keeping my A7Siii for photography. I do have higher resolution cameras for when I need it, but I do like 12 MP images for testing, shots that don't require more resolution, and old glass that will resolve very well on the sensor. Plus, I really like the colors that come out of the A7Siii. The only feature I'm bummed that the Siii does not have is the ability to use PDAF up to f/22 - but I have another camera that can do that when I need it and at least the high resolution EVF makes manual focus easier for taking over CDAF pulsing past f/11. :)

    getting a7iv
    Just for reference to anyone reading I'm a 100% video background guy, but Ive always done event coverage and TH-cam style videos for people . and Ive always had a secondary camera for pictures. that set up has always worked great for me, but been using the same cameras for years, and I'm peaking at what I can squeeze out of them quality wise. I'm still using an a7sii and a canon 6d with sigma art lenses (my videos still look great even todays standards). Getting into wedding now, and music videos. a lot of clients always want pictures here and there. they kind of want you to be the all around guy, I up charge if they want that instead of a dedicated video shoot. but for MY ease of use case a hybrid would work. the extra grand from a7iv to the a7siii ill be using towards a drone. I don't have a drone yet. it wont cover a drone. but it will help towards getting the drone. I really want 4k 120 but man.
    so my mindset right now is that a drone, and a hybrid camera will allow me to get more clients. with more clients means more money, more money means. i get an a7siii and an R something eventually . I'm known in my town for shit talking people who get a7 (non R non S) because Ive always said its for people who don't know if they want to do pictures or video. but now after working in all these different industries and getting paid. its not really so much what you want, its more what the clients want. obviously you want to have creative control etc. but the happier that client is the more recommendations you get the more they become repeat clients. and it all goes back to the saying where you got to make them work for you. working for them, works for you! so getting this money is the move.
    the drone i want cost around 8K after everything. but ill be opting in for one that cost around 2500. instead. for the time being. get clients, get paid, upgrade as i go, as i upgrade get higher paying jobs, upgrade. its been working so far. i started with an a5100 and kit lens. now i have 3 editing computers, 2 have 3090s cause why not. but this goes over a lot of peoples heads when it comes to buying equipment. what jobs does one choice offer you over the other, cause in the end the client is who pays you.

      side not to all this also, that crop wont matter to me since i already shoot cropped because i use a sigma 16 f1.4 for most video shoots. once cropped it becomes a 24 mm f2.0. My videos still come out super clear on the a7s2 when it is focused. the new AF on a7iv will alleviate those problems. (again i have a whole other camera for pictures, the a7sii stays on my ronin basically forever, i dont even swap bats because i have an external).

    I opted for the A7IV even though I primarily shoot video. If they were the same price I'd probably choose the SIII, but I don't feel like I'm missing that much. Not to mention the A7IV has more detailed 4K, it's got Movie, Stills S&Q dial and it's a newer camera so it should hold it's value longer. I never find myself needing 4K 120 and in many situations the 4k 60 crop is actually more if an aid than a hinderance for the type of videos I shoot.

    I want to ensure that if I’m investing in a camera that the quality is high with a crisp image that will hold up for years, and look professional. Yes, the content matters, however, if I’m spending money and can control the video quality that’s a big step forward for me. I would rather save, and spend a little more money if the quality difference is that much. Cheers.

    I do video AND photos. My personal important features on a Sony Camera are: very good lowlight capability, very good and fast autofocus, ability to crop if i do photos, High framerate because i love to edit SloMo, 4k isn´t really important to me, as the most people don´t realize any difference on the picture. 4K would be interesting only for croping while editing in Full HD, Nice stabilisation in case i´ve forgot my Gimbal... So to compare these favorite features on both cameras, i think the A7 iV would be the better choice for me. Because: i can get a smooth SloMo already with 60fps. Off course 120fps would be nicer, but this would be the only compromise i would have to take. The A7 iV is also capable to shoot in low light as the A7s3. Higher ISO than 100´000 isn´t really necessary in the most cases. In both ways, ISO in that extreme high level ALWAYS causes Noise. For both cameras there is a border until noise takes over. So higher ISO until 400´000 (A7s3) doesn´t mean a better Quality and it actually doesn´t make sence unless you want to shoot experimental things..... So the A7iV is absolutely enough in the most cases, when it comes to Lowlight Performance, SloMo, fast Autofocus, Log´s and all other features, wich both cameras have.
