Thank you for the amount of time and effort you put in towards video filming and editing despite not being 100%. For those of us who are considering a C & O hike and at least some of the ADT, you are providing a valuable resource. Also the enjoyment in watching your videos the last few years is second to none. -Geo
No one thinks your a wimp.Anyone alive today who has done stuff with their life has many illnesses and injuries. You keep looking to the horizon, getting up and going on in a fashion that inspires many. Thank you for noticing the birds and greeting the turtle, perhaps he has cousins on the Mississippi and you are a legend amongst them too.Best foot Forward sir, may you walk well always
I do international travel, and am therefore quite familiar with the concept of treating something, without ever knowing an actual diangosis. I feel that you had a virus type bug, rather than a bacteria type bug, in your most recent GI encounter. They make you feel globally like death, without having a specific presentation, and are often difficult to identify. I'm glad to see that you are back out and about and pushing on. . . . and this explains the uneasiness about questionable water sources elsewhere on this trip a few months later. It's one thing to know all the WLS guidelines. It is quite another to suddenly find yourself as the patient.
Yea, that was one of the unique challenges of this trail considering how urban / rural it was in the various flatlands. See Jen getting sick in Kansas also. Were I to look at doing this again I might have eyes carrying a sawyer S1/S2/S3 type filter for peace of mind along with getting more aggressive out of the gate at asking for water in towns instead of trying to filter like I did
I think we just missed passing on the C&O! That water can definitely be a hazard! I don’t believe they start treating the wells until April 15th. I’m sensible to iodine and how you described how you felt rang bells! We actually triple treated the water. Tablets, sawyer and a homemade charcoal filter. Still had to take Benadryl! Enjoying your videos very much and wish you the happiest of life on trail!
In the early 2010s, garmin made a cell phone. I had one, and that sucker was a beast. Always bring it up whenever garmin is mentioned. Such vibrant greens after all the rain! Thanks for another great video!
I have known a few people that had the older model sat phones over the years. They were even relatively affordable for a while until the monthly fees just went crazy.
Looks like a great day on the Recovery Trail! Good mileage, good food and water, and on to another state. May your lack of nausea continue! Hike on, Tortoise
Great one! First of all : a big THANKS to all the trailangels for making those road sections possible ! I hope the number of people who live along a trail and welcome hikers in their yard will go up in the future. Great you are feeling better by the day , but your feet/shoe thing is something to watch. Thanks for the video , keep it up. Oh yeah , for your first world problem : isn't it possible to fold the tent poles by two : more lenght , smaller width ?
Wow! Wow! Great mileage and how nice to meet others along the way especially the trail angels. I do have to say I was disappointed that you didn’t talk to the donkey that looked your way 😅. I know Taters would have struck up a conversation 👍. Glad you are feeling better and the weather is looking nice for you! 🥾⛰️👍
I love watching every one of your videos ❤ You capture your experiences with passion! I felt bad for you in this video when you said your feet were hamburger and then next scene you are limping more 😥 I am so grateful you made it to Charlie's! Thank you Charlie for being there at that school kitchen that morning! I hope you get the rest you need. Stay safe! ❤
I cycled from Cleveland to DC along tow paths and rail trails then over to the west coast. The C&O, GAP and W&OD trails were the best part of the ride.
Enjoy the low mosquito lifestyle for a couple more weeks. I'm a mix of glass half full/half empty. The good news in the summer you can feel proud to be a blood donor.
If you see any more of those notes, take a photo. We have some nuts up here in Schuylkill county pa who are leaving weird notes about conspiracy theories on trails. It would be interesting to see if they've expanded their range.
There are always people leaving variations of these in different places. I remember on one of the trails last year coming across an outhouse that had all these pamphlets from somebody who said they were walking across America to save it. These were just bog, standard revelation, Bible quotes. Reminded me of a guy at a local coffee shop back in California whose car is completely covered with all these biblical “and bizarre statements.
I know this is asynchronous, but did you try the pink stuff for your stomach? It's definitely good for the travel related gi things When I did my expedition medicine course (for physicians) it was really a crucial tool
I used to take Pepto-Bismol all the time as a kid. Honestly, as an adult, the only thing I found really useful is Imodium. But here I didn’t have the symptoms that I would usually take Imodium for. What symptoms do they teach you to get Pepto-Bismol for?
Glad my home state of WV good to you. Did anyone ever prescribe Zofran for your nausea? It is a great non- drowsy anti nausea drug. I don’t see how you manage being so nauseous, Stay strong
No, but I did tell the doctor I wasn’t really looking for medication to just knock down symptoms so much as just trying to understand what the issue was.
C&O flat? FLAT? The C&O has an average grade of 0.06%. You want to see flat go to the Bonneville Salt Flats. A change of only 8 inches in 12 miles or 0.001% now that's flat.

Thanks! They’re really rewarding to do but are sometimes hard to keep up with. Always appreciate notes like this

13:38 I bet you never thought you would be eating in a school cafeteria again. 🤣👍
Hey Matt! Be easy on the feet, that's the only pair you have with you. Good man Trail Angle Charlie!

I did try that, but that seem to be a little too long. So I started settling for just keeping them in the bag with the tent.
Matt Much appreciate the relevant commentary and your excellent videography and editing. Glad to see you keep keepin' on!

Thanks! Limping a bit is a daily occurrence sadly. All part of the long distance process
The videos are great! Such a detailed travelogue and incredibly helpful for those coming behind you!
"disgustingly pleasant" sounds sufficiently awesome. keep it up 😄
Looking good Matt keep on truckin' ❤
Welcome to West Virginia
I cycled from Cleveland to DC along tow paths and rail trails then over to the west coast. The C&O, GAP and W&OD trails were the best part of the ride.
Good job, glad you're feeling a wee bit better.
$3.49 for gas at a small town in West Virginia! We are paying $1.50 more per gallon in our small town of Tehachapi California.
Another state down! Sadly when I biked the C&O the Schoolhouse Kitchen was closed. Just got there at the wrong time but was looking forward to it.
That’s usually what happens to me. Honestly, I was kind of surprised when I got there and it was actually open.

Enjoying the vids thanks for sharing😊 (Daddy-n-Daughter)
Hope you’re feeling better. Thanks for the great views
My feet aka DOGS hurt thinking about your day. But still you keep on truckin.

Nausea, acid stomach, wondering if you're going to have diarrhea
But we also teach higher dosing when it involves exposures to untreated water
I never did which along with the lack of vomiting or a fever is confusing

"more girthy and less lengthy": yeah that's what they all say
Day 17. Stuck in the belly of an Iron Bird…I shall watch The Bishop on his journey.

Do you love our Wild and Wonderful State?

I drove my car out on the salt flats a few years ago. Did my own speed test. My Veloster topped out at 114!
