    I'm no believer, but I would have asked "what would Jesus do?" and smiled and walked on hoping they might change their mind 😁

    Don’t go in a cornfield in the middle of a hot day! The plants are packed very close together so there will be no breeze and very high humidity in the field itself. Corn leaves aren’t sharp, but they’re tough and you can get some mild cuts. Sit next to the field in the shadow if you’re lookin for some shade, but don’t enter the field.

    You are making great mileage. It's a shame you weren't allowed to camp at the church, but I was happy to know the Southern Baptist have been generous. Often one bad experience can change a person's attitude about offering help. I worked at a jail and a prison and learned some people can't tell the difference between kindness and weakness. Best wishes for your continued journey.

      I have dealt with a number of people over the years who just like to be upset about things. And if there is nothing in their life to be upset about, they will actually search things out. It is an unfortunate part of doing videos that we get the occasional unfair or even sometimes rude or hurtful comments. I think the fact they’re made over the Internet instead of directly addressing a living breathing person doesn’t help . Fortunately they are outnumbered by the nice ones

    What’s interesting about your channel is that, so far, through 6? states, the landscape is all very similar. I found you when this random video showed up where this guy was complaining about his stay in Clarksburg/Bridgeport which is just southeast of where I grew up. I’ve camped and backpacked through many areas of WV, so it’s been entertaining to follow your hike. But eventually I’m going to start seeing different terrain and I’m looking for to seeing that! Hike on.

    My husband lol’d when you said “heat lightning.” He says it to mess with me because I’m a weather nerd and heat lightning isn’t a thing. It’s just a storm in the distance or lightning in the distance. But either way, it doesn’t lightning because of heat despite every adult in our lives saying it to us when we were kids.
    It’s downright gross for churches to not let a hiker just set up a tent. What a horrible representation of “loving your neighbor.” So sorry for the encounters you’re having with them. It’s just wrong.

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Interesting. That’s just the term I’d heard when we had flashes off in the distance in mid summer in the Sierra. As far as the churches I understand not wanting to let me inside but you’d think setting up a tent for 10 hours in the far corner of their huge property wouldn’t be that big a deal. But ah well

    • @kelliesharpe1067
      @kelliesharpe1067 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There’s a church near me here in East Tennessee, the land of churches on every corner, and it has several “no trespassing” signs on the property. It’s like seeing a bullfrog wearing a ski jacket. Just plain strange, weird and wrong. We joke that they take the signs down when the offering plate is being passed around lol. I reckon if they’d say no to a hiker sleeping outside, they’d also say no to a homeless person sleeping outside. In all honesty, I’ve only had those kinds of experiences with church people…just a bunch of jerks.

    sounds like those with an organizational hierarchy most likely to reject camping requests

    • @traciklein4291
      @traciklein4291 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Kinda true for Mormons, because almost none of the churches are locally owned; the big organization based in SLC owns them, insures them, and has rules about what you can and can't do. For instance, no actual cooking in the kitchens, only warming food for potlucks and things. Such a rule does reduce fires and cleaning costs, but is less fun. So none of the local folks have much say about whether they can let someone camp. You'd have to find a nice person who didn't care what the rules are.

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes

      So I need to find someone to basically say “Let’em all camp and let god sort it out…”

  • @rosesmith6208
    @rosesmith6208 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    this trail is lacking good camping options, they need to work on that, find landowners who will allow camping for hike throughs, when the crazy vet did the this trail he often found cemetaries and stealth camped behind large stones or statues, in the back, near the fields or woods or fence lines. this trail seems like you can use a bike to bike pack rather than back pack. I wouldnt mind doing that.

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would not hold my breath for anything like that. When I talk to locals a lot of them are highly concerned about homeless issues. See things like the FTA thru hiker site in Orlando for how much management anything like that can take.

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I also tend to avoid anything where I’m just hiding behind something directional like a sign since editing videos often keeps me in camp late in the morning. Feels better off in the woods when I can manage it

    Actually you seem quite good with dogs. Exactly the right level of firmness. Most people who claim to like dogs don't actually deserve to own them. Dogs need a minimum of a ten-mile walk every day, a safe ten miles, and most of the dogs I've seen in your videos are full size and should be getting twenty miles, not stuck in yards. I mean sheesh, you're getting even more than twenty, and you're just a human. Sled dogs in Chicoutimi could do thirty miles in one hour.

    There are all sorts of reasons why a woman did not allow you to camp one church property. She simply might not have had the authority, the Diocese may have rules against it because of insurance purposes, they may have had a bad experience. When you were on the AT, you were welcome to camp at the convent/retreat center in New York near West Point. Don't be so quick to condemn a major charitable organization because of a decision made by one individual
