    That platform with stairs provides a soapbox enabling you to rant about trucks, no camp spots, rudish people, dogs, etc on the ADT. 🤣

      This trail has really made me aware of rail trails. Beyond the brief section of the AT on an old rail bed I hadn’t been aware of them as a thing much less the whole rail banking effort

    I'm impressed by the engineering that went into this railroad- bridges, tunnels, etc., through such complex topography. Can't have been easy.

    Those steps to nowhere are for any number of Railroad structures. Switching tower. Water cistern. Signal station or some such.

      I actually have a very specific motion I make bumping my water bottles and food bag and making sure my polls are on my pack. I’m just not used to having an umbrella in my hand. Having said that this thing is saved me from a lot of misery so far.

    Ah rain! What would we hikers do without it, other than enjoy ourselves more! Still, good miles and GREAT care package of goodies from Taters. Sometimes it's just the morale boost of a package that helps almost as much as the food itself. The coffee, of course, is another matter. Morale factor AND tasty necessity. Hike on to Ohio! Tortoise

    I am just enjoying your videos! Wishing I was closer to be a trail angel for you! I have been watching a fellow TH-cam person who does a lot of travel. Her laundry hack is something of interest. She uses a dry sack, laundry soap sheets and a couple gain sent balls. Fills the sac with water and “agates” it like a washing machine. Lets it sit for a 1/2 hour or less , swishes it around again. Then she rinses - same way as washing. Rings out the clothes and lets them sit to get out more water and rings out again. She then takes the clothes and rolls them in a towel and rings them out again in the towel then hangs to dry. She said they usually dry overnight in a hotel or if on trail and it’s sunny (maybe the rain luck will change?). I just found that hack to be ingenuous! I’ve done similar style of laundry out - but never thought of using a dry sac! Thought you might find that hack useful in your arsenal of tips and tricks! Hike on!!!

      I’ve played with a few things like that before but honestly I find the hassle isn’t really worth it while thru hiking. A lot of work and some extra things to carry and I’ll just be getting the clothes dirty again. I could see if I was living somewhere off grid for a while though

    Happy to be following your adventure(s)
    My plan is to start a journey this month, probably about six weeks. I'd like to go for longer but I need to be back home in July. Anyway I feel the same sort of things that you talk about in your videos but in a parallel, cycling trip specific way. My friend Charlie Wilkins wrote a fantastic book from his walk from Thunder Bay Ontario to New York city. It's called Walk to New York. Very funny and all just factual non fiction.
    In 1989, a guy I met at teachers college turned me on to Bruce Chatwin's Song Lines. After reading Song Lines , I felt that I had learned something crucial and foundational and it explained / changed things for me. As a kid, reading Lord of the Rings resonated with me mostly in the majority of the pages, while time is passed hiking, camping, trekking and sharing their talk. The fights along the way didn't interest me so much; it was more the tripping for me. The scene with Bilbo and Gollum in the underground damp, matching wits, seems like a metaphorical testing of mettle for one who is a traveller and has to figure something out or else...
    Anyway Buddy, I understand the depression of being away from the trek. I'm staring at my bike here, drinking coffee and I've vowed to do a 100 km test ride today with half- full gear.
    There will be challenges I'm sure because I'm pretty out of shape now. I've only logged 150 km all spring so far. Three weeks until departure. Exciting. I'm really excited vicariously for you though. I wish my knees would let me do what you're doing. I'd walk our Bruce trail for sure.
    Cheers mate!

    What’s the secret to setting up a tent when it’s pissing down with rain, Matt? Just be quick as possible or it there some sort of method where you can get it up without getting soaked 🤔

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you have a quick pitch model or whatever they call it you can pop up the fly on the ground cloth using the poles then put up the inner bit. Personally I’ve found that’s more trouble than it’s worth and I don’t like tents that are so delicate they require a ground cloth. My Hornet I can set up the poles, then pull out and have the inner up in maybe 20 seconds, and then throw the rain fly over the top before finishing the setup. Works well enough for me. If it’s raining that much you’re going to have moisture around anyway

    Mainly due to 'neighborly' uncontrolled night time dog barking I switched to the Loop ear plugs for sleeping and found they work well for me. I thought I noticed Dude Wipes in your resupply box and wondered your uses for them along with the obvious? Worth the additional weight and bulk compared to traditional?

    • @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes
      @FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I switched away from paper toilet paper years ago. Wipes lead to a lot less but chafing and they can be invaluable in the event of bad events on trail as much as I laughed and mocked the dude wipe brand specifically I have found they hold up the best to compression and cold and heat. Some of the other brand of tendency to pill up After a while

    there is a hotel within half a mile of the bridge over the state route there in Ellenboro. i would not want to camp between Pennsboro and Ellenboro. The NBRT used to get so much bicycle traffic...other than the locals who would take a walk in the morning or evening....that even section hiking seemed to be a strange concept to some of the locals. There used to be a "local homeless man" who would ride his bike and homemade trailer, camping wherever. I think he may have scared some of the locals as he was rather eccentric.
