I have the r3 and I have to say this is a very good review indeed. I think your choice of comparisons was great. The one thing I perhaps would have added was fan noise. My r3 fans do kick in pretty early when gaming, even on older titles like Skyrim, and I'm not sure how to stop that - they're also pretty loud. However the cooling is really good. I've had the computer for about 4 months now and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Best computer I've ever owned and I've been gaming since I played on a ZX81 :)
I agree! I really like the R3, I think it's a great laptop that deserves more attention than some other popular laptops out there. Yes, the fans can get fairly loud, If I ever do a solo review, I will make sure to address the loud fans. Thanks for the comment!
im using the Razer Blade and it's pretty good. yes its expensive and does not have much to upgrade inside but it is light as hell, sometimes when i use a big backpack i question whether my blade is in there or not. But if you dont care about the portability then go for the alienware
if this is your 1st video , then you did a fcnk great job sir. I own an alienware r2 I bought used for dirt cheap on ebay. But ever since the r3 came out, i have been dying to get one. THanks to your video I now see how huge the performance difference is between them, and now I am more sure than ever. I will buy it with the ips 1080p screen instead of the oled though, since the 1060 can't really push out 60fps at such high resolutions anyways.
i didnt know that this is your first video i thought you have more than 2million subscribers cuz your video is very professional and informative this is what i was looking for and i like your detailed comparisons keep it up you will definitely hit 1M subscribers
Yeah I would agree the r2 looks nicer as a computer it’s to bad that they didn’t just put better hardware in to that older stole of computer. I’m got the r2 15 and I maxed out all the hardware.980m 8gb 32 gb of ram core i7 overclocked with the alienwere amp. It sill gets lots of FPS still. But I want to see an r3 1070m run up on the 980m see if it is worth upgrading
very good for the first video! subscribed! it would have been nice if you also covered the inside of these two models as well, touching on upgrades possible on storage, ram, wifi module, etc..
a little tip: turn off v sync when testing games. V sync caps the game at your refresh rate. Overwatch on the 1060, ultra preset can run over 90 frames (i believe)
I still have the r2 as I only use it for gaming when plugged into the graphics amplifier.. Can you please test the differences in these laptops when used when the graphics amplifier? My R2 runs well with just two pci lanes but I wonder what the performance benefit is moving up to the R3's 4 pci lanes and upgraded spec.
If you plan on continuing to use the Alienware graphics amp then I wouldn’t bother upgrading your laptop. I’m in the same boat as you, I have a Alienware 17 r2 with an i7, 16gig of ram and a gtx980m gpu and it still plays new games on high setting. I’m currently playing borderlands 3 on mostly high setting with a couple at medium and I’m getting 50-60fps, and that’s with the Gtx980m. The Alienwares screen looks awesome and have no complaints so overall it’s still an awesome laptop in my book. But I’m not one of those guys who play those online pvp fast paced games, so I don’t need really high FPS and high monitor refresh rates. If you are one of those gamers then you might want to upgrade. Or just buy a better gpu for your amp and a high refresh rate monitor if needed. If I was going to upgrade I think I would get the Alienware m51, that is one nice laptop with more then enough power to last awhile. In the mean time I’m still happy with my ageing Alienware 17 :)
@@inmatejason Yea, got the 15 R2 i7, with the gtx 970m which still plays plenty of games. Thinking of gettin the graphics amp for this next gen of games. Can you play the new COD Warzone? I believe that needs 8gb of vram which my gtx970m only has 3gb. I'm assuming the system ram doesn't aid in vram. . Borderlands is a great game. that unreal engine is sumthin
My R2 is finally coughing its last (USB ports have mostly fried, etc), so I've ordered its R3 replacement. Thanks for giving me a sense of the changes in store. Looks like it won't fit in the same old neoprene sleeve with that longer back-end =)
Hey Tech House great vid !!! I was just about to pull the triggar for the core I5 with 1050 graphics for the R3 with OLED option for almost 1.5k when i caught site of the older model for just 60% of the R3's price with similar specs but with the older processor ram and graphics. Now i would love to hear your two cents on which i should purchase taking into account two conditions. 1) Price and 2) Intended Use - For non-gaming purposes as I will use the laptop mainly for photo-editing. Which would you recommend? I'm feelin the R2 more :)
The R3 is certainly a step up in performance, and even if your not gaming it has a quad core cpu which will help with export times. That said, I personally experienced better battery life with the R2 and it was a easy design to carry around day to day. I think if the price is right, you could do for the R2, but the R3 may be more future proof down the road.
I have the r2. It's the highest end laptop I've ever owned, and didn't come out very well from a single drop of about 40-50 centimetres. - Every cheaper laptop I've had has come out better from worse drops. Otherwise, I'm very happy with it.
I got r3 and r2 (used) 1 year old but it's 50% cheaper. Which should I go for? R2 has much more battery life which is important. Both are able to hook up with graphic amplifier so it's good for gaming. Mostly I'll game when I'm home. Is r2 lighter as well?
i finally got my hands on r3. damn the build in by far the best i ever seen on a laptop. (previous, mac, sony, lenovo owner). from the exterior to keyboard to screen. just a beauty. only downside is the hideous power adapter. the r3 is already heavy it deserve an improved battery adapter. OVERALL. im very happy with r3. not too gamer-ish look too
I got a MSI Apache pro over the R3. The built quality is superb on the Alienware but those neon lights all over & battery bulging out of the back was a deal breaker to me. Not only that the screen size is only 15in & Those things get hotter than a Keyan pepper. MSI imo has just as good built quality if not better, way better cooling system & pretty much everything else. I got a R2 for $200 & may pick up the R4 in the future. All in all Alienware's are amazing gaming laptops to own but I will always prefer MSI Laptops.
You forgot to say that the USB C port is Thunderbolt 3,at least I'm pretty sure I saw a thunderbolt symbol,it was a bit hard to see, also VRAM on a GPU stands for Video RAM(Random Access Memory) not Virtual RAM which is when you use part of your HDD or SSD as a much slower version of system RAM...
Having access to the model, would you be able to confirm if the AW 13 R3 dual m.2 pcie slots support 2TB ssd on each to a total of 4TB ssd storage? I know it can do 1TB on both, but not sure if it is limited to 1TB or can take more on each slots.
I don't have access to another 1TB ssd so I'm not able to test it myself, but I saw a listing on Amazon for the R3 with a 4TB of ssd in raid-0. Let me see if I can find it...
im a little confused because i got almost 7 hours on basic use and about 4.5 hours on gaming for the r3 model. How is your battery life so low and what is this based on besides whatever test you did. i got my alienware yesterday and im loving it so far. but your battery statistics dont seem realistic.
I love the Alienware 13 as well. I used it as my daily computer for testing for the week before my comparison and got somewhere around 6 hours of use. The PC Mark 8 stress tested the unit and it got a somewhat lower score. I'm planning on either doing a solo review or comparison between the Alienware R3 and the Razer Blade where Ill go more in-depth to try and get a more accurate batter life. Thank you for commenting!
Hey man, when do you think that video will come out? And can you talk specifically about how much worse the portability is on the r3? and if that trade-off is worth it? Thanks!
The R2 processor is a dual-core U-series ULV CPU while the R3 processor is a quad-core H-series CPU. The R2 is also limited to LPDDR3 RAM while the R3 sports DDR4 RAM.
It doesn't hurt to get one with the Kaby Lake 7700HQ if you're shopping new or upgrading from a very old PC. The processor offers some improvements over the older Skylake 6700HQ.
Man. If alienware had just given this thing a 14" or 13" screen they'd have a winner. There's no excuse for such massive edge besels in this day and age.
Branden McNabb Not much, the R2 was an incremental refresh rather than a new design. They look identical on the outside and share many of the same parts on the inside. The R1 uses Haswell and Broadwell processors while the R2 uses the newer Skylake, and the ports are different (R1 does not have a USB C port but has 3 full size USB ports and a displayport). Those are the only differences that I know of.
he's referring vram as virtual ram? virtual ram is a process that your OS may do if you run out of system ram and begins to use your storage drive, vram when talking about GPUs is known as video ram :)
I have the r3 and I have to say this is a very good review indeed. I think your choice of comparisons was great. The one thing I perhaps would have added was fan noise. I have the R2 for a year now and still love it.it has the processor i7 6700hq with ddr4 and the rest is the same you had on your test.
same.
Do you still have it?
if this is your first video, you made an amazing first video. I'm torn between the Razer Blade 14 and the R3 OLED, I'll like your opinion on this!
Making the finish touches to that video right now! It will be up hopefully later today!
DUDE DONT GET THE RAZER BLADE!! It doesn't have a OLED screen and it's way more fragile.
Glendon Chin Neither, I'm waiting for the 4K Aero 15
im using the Razer Blade and it's pretty good. yes its expensive and does not have much to upgrade inside but it is light as hell, sometimes when i use a big backpack i question whether my blade is in there or not. But if you dont care about the portability then go for the alienware
LOL it's VIDEO-RAM not VIRTUAL-RAM :)
I purchased the r3 OLED today. I don't play games, yet, but its nice to know I bought a brick house! Excellent video btw.
1:28 and 1:53 : VRAM is Video RAM, not Virtual RAM. Nice video btw.
Jordan Kwon yeah me would love to download some virtual ram

r2 looks better in my opinion
that's pure subjective, just got my r3 and the oled is stunning

Ya i agree, after filming i realized i missed showcasing the inside, i'll make sure I do that for the next videos!
comfortavle voice to listen to!
Really appreciate the support, thank you!
it's an awesome video with soothing voice !!
keep up the great work

Leaping Doggeh about 95 acctually
the displays on these are amazing
Am I the only one who prefers the look of the R2's outer shell?
Chrono™ you’re not the only one to think that!
R2 is better looking
r2 looks like r3 but has been dropped
Would be great if you could do a full review of the Alienware 13 R3 covering all aspects specifically covering thermals on stress test.

I enjoyed the comparison and I think you need better lighting. Other than that nice video!

I wanna buy your R2 lol
I just wanna say that you did a Wonderfull job on your first video,
Can you also do a comparison for best gaming laptops under $1500
So much better than my first video

The R3 CRUSHES the R2 model (Respectively)
Thickness of 24 inches?
Christian Wilhite hahh talk about portability
Christian Wilhite He's probably wring, 24 inches Is 2 feet
Lol
Thanks for the vid, dude.

Hi
I have a question.
Is the type-C port a tunderbolt one on the R2?
Alienware 13 R3 (kaby lake) vs Razer Blade (kaby lake) - would be awesome to see this showdown!!
Wait how thick is it? 4:03
You are so good, please trust in your and go ahead
I found a r2 pre owned for €750,is it worth it?

actually an awesome vid thanks
good job man.

currently writing the script to compare the two as we speak. should be up in a week or so!

How and where did you get your Alienware 13 r3 laptop. I can't seem to get one from dell..
I think I got one of the last batches before they upgraded to the new i7 7700hq series so I got lucky.
It doesn't hurt to get one with the Kaby Lake 7700HQ if you're shopping new or upgrading from a very old PC. The processor offers some improvements over the older Skylake 6700HQ.
I want the last alienware that still have an internal bluray drive
I'm getting this but withought the oled 1440p display
What is that song you used for testing the speakers?
It was It's All Happening by Huma-Huma
hows the battery on the r2?
Man. If alienware had just given this thing a 14" or 13" screen they'd have a winner. There's no excuse for such massive edge besels in this day and age.
Virtual Ram? is Video Ram not virtual, because the Graphics Cards has specifically allocated VRam for it
"And the thickness is around 24 inches"
Damn! What kind of camera do you have? It's slimming.
*skyartlerist* *D* haha I heard that too. that's one fat computer
great video
R3 is not having optical disc drives????

joshdrr Thanks. I guess the biggest reason I ask is because I have no idea which one I have lol
I have the Intel Core i5 5200U Broadwell-U so that must mean I have the R1
Actually the 13 r3 dose have OLED but the 15 r3and the 17 r4 don’t
Can anyone tell me if the Ssd Samsung 250gb Evo 970 M.2 Nvme 3400mbps M2 Pci, and compatible with this Alienware 15 R2 notebook?
I know this is really late, but VRAM is Video RAM, not Virtual RAM :)
nice video~
So you don't need a Graphic Amplifier or a Graphic Card or whatever the hell it is,you can just buy a laptop and start gaming?
Both when talking about the R2 by the way
only 400 subs wtf should be way more
if the r3 didnt have that big chunk at the bacl i would defenintly buy it but im hessitent about it

4:40 Actually it’s from left to right not right to left but still forgive you since it’s your first video.
Do an alienwere r2 15 980m vs a r3 1070m
I'm getting the r3 but without the oled screen
same here , i7/GTX 1060 , a good portable VR station
R3 is always better, you DONT want to buy a old gpu now, not with that amount of difference in performance, just to safe a couple of bucks. period.
Vram is not Virtual RAM...
vRAM isnt virtual ram, its video ram
They Both have thunderbolt ports son smh
"Virtual RAM"... You mean "Video RAM" Two very different things.
4:03 "the thickness is around 24 INCHES"
I wanna 13 r3 oled,differ my mbp13TB,save money.go~all small& powerful laptop.
I have the r2

he's referring vram as virtual ram? virtual ram is a process that your OS may do if you run out of system ram and begins to use your storage drive, vram when talking about GPUs is known as video ram :)
