I've seen the Alien Ware everywhere, I've heard they're good in reviews. But never seen anybody have it. You definitely have to spend high bucks if you want a good gaming laptop, I've figured that out while searching them up. But hey, still love these reviews, keep it up and Merry Christmas! :)
Great video and thanks you sold me on this laptop. Just ordered it with the oled screen and this is my first gaming laptop. Been a console player and this is actually my first step into the pc/laptop gaming world. Also subbed!
I play a lot of Insurgency and my new R13 does not disappoint. Love the premium feel, lighting and especially the OLED display. Opted for the i5 CPU and 8 gb ram, which I upgraded to 16 gb. Figure I'd save me a little money since I don't do a lot of multitasking, nor have tons of tabs open and processes running in the background. Had to buy a 7 port hub though since there's only 2 USB ports; which is the only con. Every game I have thrown at it has played at 2K with everything on high. No hiccups. Love it.
Does this 13 inch model have the colored strips on the edges that light up to match the colors of the track pad and the alien head on the front? The larger 15 and 17 inch models have these strips, but it looks like from the video this smaller model does not. Thanks for your review!
Was on the same boat. Ordered and canceled my 15r3 because of that... Ended up ordering the 13r3 because of mobility, oled and good gaming capabilities. Im a gamer but not a hardcore one, so the screen and the 1060 do it for me.... cant wait to receive it!
The 15 has more and better storage options to store all your games and movies as well as some professional programs on the SSD, has the option to get a 7820HK and a GTX 1070 as well as the 120hz, the 13 has a more colour accurate display option and (obviously) better portability.
Based on this review, I bought a Alienware 13 r3, I got the LCD to Touch display, I don't like though screens that much on a laptop. I could easily upgrade it, I could easily install Ubuntu 18.04 to it, side by side with Windows, and it's working flawlessly. I love this laptop.
A very well informed review, there aren't many covering the Alienware 13 R3 so thank you. I have mine being delivered tomorrow I can't wait. I opted for the i5 though as most of my gaming is on my console. This however will be a nice edition to my gaming Arsenal especially with Xbox play anywhere
My little brother freaked out when I got him this gaming laptop, Mattew you are one of the 22 people I subscribed to, I only subscribe to the best youtubers, your one on my list, you are a well recommended youtuber, keep making videos, I love to watch them, BTW ARE YOU A MODEL?
+Zephyer You're little brother has an awesome big brother! That's a sweet gift and a great gaming laptop. I really appreciate you watching my videos and for subscribing. It's awesome people like you that make this worth while! Lol no I'm not a model thanks for the compliment though !
Just received mine! Love it so far. You can adjust brightness of the backlighting via software though. Otherwise good review. What other laptops do you think it compares to? How are your acoustics/fan noise compared to the competition?
Thanks for this amazing review. Do you have any idea about the date that Alienware will release new laptops in? I like the 13" version just because of its Oled screen but I hope it can be available on the 15" version so do advise me to wait might oled screen will be available on 15"or buy this machine ?
I'm torn between Alienware 17 or a Asus is the script the newest Asus gaming laptop ? I am a Mac use for graphics I own a Asus now what's your suggestion Mathew
Great review! The oled is truly stunning. The single level of backlighting can actually be adjusted by right clicking the alien head in task bar and adjusting the brightness slider to tone down the lighting whilst gaming. 👍
Hey Matt! I recently bought the 15 inch version of this and I cannot wait to get it. Would you say that you prefer a 15 inch version of this (oled screen) or is this fine?
I bought my son one of these. One amazing machine. Battery life isn't great, maybe 2hrs max - depends on settings - but not an issue - it's a gaming laptop. Aaccurate review :)
hi, i have the same model. Is it normal that u can hear a realy quiet "klick" noise when the fans start to ramp up? It sounds like a hdd, but only for one second.
I loved the 13 r1... this will be my next portable steam machine!... How do you think about the new touchpad? It seems like the xps13? The mine (on r1) works very bad, it's seems too chip...
great review. I've been watching the 13 R3 for some time now and really love it because of the OLED display. Like you, I wish they would put the Oled displays on at least a 15 inch Alienware. I don't know that for this kind of money I can live with just a 13 inch display.
Hey, just a quick question. I'm doubting between getting the i5 or the i7 version. Both have 256GB PCIe SSD's, GTX 1060, 16GB of RAM and a FHD screen (no oled unfortunately :( ). Price difference is 100 euros. I already wanted to go for a cheap inspiron 7567 but after all the upgrades it needs I can just as well buy the alienware and have a better, faster laptop with more ports and better build quality. Still doubting which to get. I can also get the 15" model with i7 for the same price as the but it only has a 1TB HDD. Though decisions to make, but I want something that will last me for some years and can replace my desktop.
I am just a click away from ordering aw15 kaby lake core i7 , just that the 6700 suffered from serious throttling issues is what's stopping me, I mean are those issues still existing in kaby lake processors ?? and how bad is thermal throttling if there is any still...
#Being Impractical Omen is by far the best $ per power value of any modern gaming laptop. A fully decked out Omen with 17in 4k G-Sync display, I7HQ cpu, 16GB DDR4, 512 GB PCIe SSD, and GTX 1070 is only $1500 and some change as of today if you build yours on HPs website a similar but less powerful AW 13 with a 13inch 1440P screen and a less powerful GTX 1060 with same processor, Ram, and SSD is over $2K but it does have an OLED display and it is more portable so theres that, but for the raw specs with only a 13 inch screen and GTX 1060 i think the AW 13 is definitely a bit overpriced
What there are two small ports on either side on camera...? And also what's difference between 2018 model vs 2016 model i7 7700hq 1060 6gb OLED touch display??
I don't understand why the battery is so bad? Doesn't it use integrated graphics for normal tasks like sending email And browsing web or watching TH-cam? Everything should be at idle with almost no CPU usage. I don't see why it drains so bad.. is it the OLED screen?
How's the battery life for regular usage like surfing nets, youtube....etc and no gaming..? And what are the options of storing game since it doesn't have an HDD.
I have a question do these come in different colors or can you change the color of the LEDs because I want to buy a LED wireless mouse that doesn't change colors.just a question Edit:never mind thanks for telling me:)
Hi Matthew! I am thinking about getting the alienware 13 r3 but don't want to spend too much money on it. Do you think the alienware 13 r3 without oled display is fine? I will mostly use it for gaming!
+ZackFilms100 thanks Zack! I love the 13 r3 is an awesome laptop and the display is gorgeous. The only thing I didn't like about it is the display size. For me personally gaming on a 13 inch display is too small. But you may feel different
Hi matthew i know how awesome the oled of this aw 13 however im considering fhd ver because of budget ive been searching in the net for a review but i dont find any how good is the ips 1080p panel any idea
I cannot find this laptop with the exact specs you are reviewing. I want this exact laptop with the i7 6700HQ GTX 1060 OLED Screen 16gb of ram and a 512ssd if you can find me a link it would be awesome
I know we have a few of these at home. But you still need to carry the gizmo in your pocket or your bag when you go out. And when you are at home, you often need to be looking around for the little thing... Much more practical to have a reader built right in the laptop!
Great review as ever. I got this last week and it's really lovely. The fans blow a bit hard so I use headphones but the speakers are good. The colours are a bit saturated on OLED which is an incredible display but I'm not sure how to de-saturate them a little bit.
I just want to add that I bought a Lenovo based off one of your reviews and was really delighted. You do a great job. Your videos are so crisp and clean and your presentation so relevant to real-world use. And it's great that you respond to comments!
13 r3 with 7th gen i7 7700 hq quad core 3.8 ghz with boost, 16 GB ddr4 ram, 512 Gb ssd and a Gtx 1060 for $2600 or a 15 r3 with the same processor and ram (currently a deal with 32 Gb ddr4 ram RN), 256 Geb ssd + q tb hdd and a Gtx 1070 for $3100?
random question, if you were to drop the resolution on the laptop to 1080p (with the oled display) would battery life improve? and would it look any good?
I don't understand... Dave Lee said around 4.5 hrs of battery life, Matt said 3, and in a review from LaptopMag I read 7hrs of battery life... How can everyone get such different results?!
haha, ya battery life is tough to measure! Everyones results are going to be different. Laptopmag basis there tests around non real world use. So for example, just streaming a video for 7 hours. Myself and I'm pretty sure Dave Lee too, just use the laptop normally and measure based on what we do with the laptop. It's a very subjective test. With that being said, gaming laptops generally never have good battery life, especially with a 1060 inside.
Thanks for the reply! And yeah I know gaming laptops tend to have awful battery life, but I'm looking for something a bit more powerful than an ultrabook.
you're welcome! Take a look at the dell xps 15. The new one came out has a GTX 1050 inside. You'll get good battery life, decent gaming and a slim portable form factor.
Hello Matthew. Could you please help me? Wich laptop do you recommend me to buy that i can use for oculus rift? Not very expensive, with 17 screen size. I saw the ASUS GL702VM, there is another option? Thanks Mate
Husam Dweik. i just want to use the VR for training on flight simulator, i dont need something very expensive. I was using now the VR with my phone, but the quality on my phone is so bad, the streaming is not very good. im looking here some videos to try to change it, but i dont know if will works. I want spend the minimum, just for the flight simulator and i prefer a laptop, so i can carry to everywhere. thanks for your help mate

Matthew Moniz yes sir let's blow this up in 2017! Happy Holidays brother.
***** thanks
+boltthunderkit 6900
Which one should be better for RPG games. Alienware 17R4 or this?
Bought this model with the IPS screen for my son for Christmas. It covers all his gaming and school work needs and shouldn't need upgrading for years.
"and it doesn't look like it's gonna murder you while you're sleeping unlike other gaming laptops on the market." 👍
I've seen the Alien Ware everywhere, I've heard they're good in reviews. But never seen anybody have it. You definitely have to spend high bucks if you want a good gaming laptop, I've figured that out while searching them up. But hey, still love these reviews, keep it up and Merry Christmas! :)
Ya, it's a bit pricey but hte engineering is good! = ) Merry Christmas Jay!
Great video and thanks you sold me on this laptop. Just ordered it with the oled screen and this is my first gaming laptop. Been a console player and this is actually my first step into the pc/laptop gaming world. Also subbed!
+LeRoy G awesome thanks LeRoy! Welcome to the channel : )
LeRoy G how is the laptop ?
2020 I am playing the outer world on this beast at steady 60fps beautiful game on the Oled screen.
If your worried about the battery life, don't get the oled display, opt for the cheaper display and you will get around 6 hours of normal use.
I play a lot of Insurgency and my new R13 does not disappoint. Love the premium feel, lighting and especially the OLED display. Opted for the i5 CPU and 8 gb ram, which I upgraded to 16 gb. Nice! Glad you're liking it = ) It's an awesome laptop for gaming and the size is good.
Does this 13 inch model have the colored strips on the edges that light up to match the colors of the track pad and the alien head on the front? The larger 15 and 17 inch models have these strips, but it looks like from the video this smaller model does not. Thanks for your review!
I'm torn between this one or the 15 r3. I like the 13 inch because of the OLED but it's smaller. Such a hard decision. Anyone have any choices
Amani Graham Same exact problem 😂
Was on the same boat. Ordered and canceled my 15r3 because of that... Ended up ordering the 13r3 because of mobility, oled and good gaming capabilities. Im a gamer but not a hardcore one, so the screen and the 1060 do it for me.... cant wait to receive it!

idk if anyone's mention this to you but your width seems to be for the 15 inch not the 13 inch
Matthew Moniz nice way of showing the ports unique
+ALTHDS thanks man!
Are you worried about the burn-in issues with OLED display?
great video.. do you know if i get the 1080 screen variant, will it have gsync and how many hertz refresh rate will the hd screen have
Great video Matthew I am a fan, I am also a tech reviewer but I am based in London
Thanks man! = ) That's awesome. I'll definitely have to check your channel out.
Matthew Moniz please do, I'm not at your level but I keep grinding

I am thinking about buying the Graphics Amplifier for this laptop. Thoughts?
I love that laser cutter style port outliner graphic!!
lol thanks Daniel!
Nice Job Matthew!Hope im see you again next reviews.fans from Thailand!
great review! love the "laser pointer-ish" effect on the ports!
Wait....I dont think this laptop is 2kg. I think you got it wrong dude
really amazing to pack such performance in such a little package without it overheating and a OLED display :p amazing review Matthew!
Ya it's a pretty small but powerful little beast. Thanks man and HAppy Holidays!
Happy Holidays :D!
I've decided on Alienware because I LOVE the build quality. Do you feel the OLED is worth it over the IPS screen?
I prefer teh OLED everything just pops! Make sure to calibrate it though or colours are a bit off
great review on a good laptop!
+UrGamer - Fraz Thanks man ! It's a pretty sweet laptop especially for the size
Yw. Thanks for replying BTW. I watch your videos all the time!
How is the battery life when light web browsing?
Thanks for this amazing review. Do you have any idea about the date that Alienware will release new laptops in?
I like the 13" version just because of its Oled screen but I hope it can be available on the 15" version so do advise me to wait might oled screen will be available on 15"or buy this machine ?
I'm buying it. Hands down this is the little tank I've been looking for.
I'm torn between Alienware 17 or a Asus is the script the newest Asus gaming laptop ?
I am a Mac use for graphics I own a Asus now what's your suggestion Mathew
G7 with top notch specs cost about $1,100 - $1,250. And it has newer 6 core i7-8750h.
apperciate you!
Great review!
The oled is truly stunning.
The single level of backlighting can actually be adjusted by right clicking the alien head in task bar and adjusting the brightness slider to tone down the lighting whilst gaming. 👍
Thanks man!= ) I agree the OLED is awesome and I'll check out the right click to adjust brightness!
Hey Matt! I recently bought the 15 inch version of this and I cannot wait to get it. Would you say that you prefer a 15 inch version of this (oled screen) or is this fine?
+Leaping Doggeh I personally prefer 15 to game on I found the 13 too small
Great review and quality video editing!
Thanks man!
I bought my son one of these. One amazing machine. Battery life isn't great, maybe 2hrs max - depends on settings - but not an issue - it's a gaming laptop. Aaccurate review :)
+Lisa Plevey nice lucky son! He must be super happy with it. That's true gaming laptops never have good battery life! Thanks Lisa and for watching !
hi, i have the same model.
Is it normal that u can hear a realy
quiet "klick" noise when the fans start to ramp up? It sounds like a hdd, but only for one second.
Nice review man !!!! Are you planning to do review a review on the new aw15 and the aw17 ??
Thanks Atharv! = ) I might! I'm going to wait first to see if there is a refresh at CES with the new Kaby Lake Processors.
Matthew Moniz oh okay nice!! Thank you!!
oh...okay!!
If you can only play at 1080p,then why get QHD screen?
video editing, photo editing , overall sharpness when doing day to day tasks...
Khushil Parikh pretty sure qhd is 1440p
Khushil Parikh I'm confused guys wtf does 4K mean
4K is 3840by2160
You can play at 1440p just fine you'll just have to run a mix of Med and High rather than ultra. All depends on your preferences.
good god matthew i want you under my christmas tree. why is that so wrong
maximum temperature after long period of heavy usage ?
When will this laptop with oled display be available on amazon?
+Mathew moniz I am really confused between buying this laptop or predator Helios 300. Any suggestions?
what is the model number for this laptop I'm trying to find the exact one and how much does it cost
Only a Gsync user can spot the crazy screen tearing when he showed battle field game play. Did anyone else saw this? Any fix to this?
I loved the 13 r1... this will be my next portable steam machine!... How do you think about the new touchpad? It seems like the xps13? The mine (on r1) works very bad, it's seems too chip...
It's much better!! It's not as good as the xps 13 or 15, but pretty close. Probably one of the better gaming laptop trackpads I've used.
great review. I've been watching the 13 R3 for some time now and really love it because of the OLED display. Like you, I wish they would put the Oled displays on at least a 15 inch Alienware. I don't know that for this kind of money I can live with just a 13 inch display.
Thanks! = ) Ya, I have to admit th display is a TAD small. 15" is perfect!
Hi. Nice review. I am considering buying between this laptop and the MSI GS43VR.. They both seem nice and compact gaming laptops
I am just a click away from ordering aw15 kaby lake core i7 , just that the 6700 suffered from serious throttling issues is what's stopping me, I mean are those issues still existing in kaby lake processors ?? and how bad is thermal throttling if there is any still...
keep it up bro !! nice editing video and clearly voice, i'm going to subcribe right now :D
+Thành Nguyễn thanks man! Welcome to the channel : )
Do you think the modle with the 768p display, gtx 1060, and a i5 6300hq is worth the money?
+omar lewis honestly no I'd get it with at least a 1080p display
Does anyone know what the screen response time is on the 1440p models?
My HP Stream is getting hot just by running this video.
Can you review the Gigabyte Aero 14 with Kaby Lake?
Excellent, excellent, excellent job, great review as always.
Thanks I appreciate! = ) Happy Holidays Viajer!
do you feel that alienware has the most sturdy built laptops on the market?
For gaming laptops, they're great, but I'd probably put Razer first.
Great review sir. Will u suggest this laptop over razer blade, msi or hp omen? Please only consider price point to hardware
LFORSAKENL true, but one advantage AW has is the alienware amplifier
What there are two small ports on either side on camera...? And also what's difference between 2018 model vs 2016 model i7 7700hq 1060 6gb OLED touch display??
I don't understand why the battery is so bad? Doesn't it use integrated graphics for normal tasks like sending email
And browsing web or watching TH-cam? Everything should be at idle with almost no CPU usage. I don't see why it drains so bad.. is it the OLED screen?
ripperx444 Yes because of OLED.
How's the battery life for regular usage like surfing nets, youtube....etc and no gaming..? And what are the options of storing game since it doesn't have an HDD.
WOWCRITS prob like 6 hours
WOWCRITS the battery life for standard usage is 3-5 hours. If you game, it will last 1-2 hours. Not sure what you mean by storing games
You sold me on purchasing it. Great review!
haha nice, thanks Danny!
I have a question do these come in different colors or can you change the color of the LEDs because I want to buy a LED wireless mouse that doesn't change colors.just a question
Edit:never mind thanks for telling me:)
I just bought a this lab top just the other day how long will it be expected to last me
Hi Matthew!
I am thinking about getting the alienware 13 r3 but don't want to spend too much money on it.
Do you think the alienware 13 r3 without oled display is fine? I will mostly use it for gaming!
Btw I love your videos!
Awesome content man , earned a Sub man!
Love your videos Matt your reviews are just awesome 👍
+Gabriel Umoh Thanks Gabriel I appreciate it! Hope you are enjoying your holidays
Matthew Moniz yeah I am hope you are enjoying yours too?
Should i get this or the MSI Ge63VR 7rfe 1060(6gb) i7700HQ?
I'm only being indecisive cause of the build quality and weight.
Great video brother, Keep up the good work.
+nick subject Thanks Nick!
I cannot find this laptop with the exact specs you are reviewing. I want this exact laptop with the i7 6700HQ GTX 1060 OLED Screen 16gb of ram and a 512ssd if you can find me a link it would be awesome
Awesome review ! You're making great videos and I wouldn't be surprised if you get a lot more subscribers.
Thanks henry! = ) Hopefully one day!
No SD card slot???
no unfortunately not
Matthew Moniz, I don't know if it is just me but no SD card slot is a deal breaker. I can understand the no optical drive thing but no sd card slot???
Daniel Levesque It's not a deal breaker for me because you can buy a USB SD readers.
I know we have a few of these at home. But you still need to carry the gizmo in your pocket or your bag when you go out. And when you are at home, you often need to be looking around for the little thing... Much more practical to have a reader built right in the laptop!
Daniel Levesque Oh yeah really good point! The USB will stick out of it while the SD card reader kinda goes all the way in.
older laptop designs still look cool
Very well done Review/Overview.
thanks Jason!
Your welcome Sir.
Great review as ever. I got this last week and it's really lovely. The fans blow a bit hard so I use headphones but the speakers are good. The colours are a bit saturated on OLED which is an incredible display but I'm not sure how to de-saturate them a little bit.
Thanks! = )
I live in Australia so it's way more expensive here.
Mine is coming in a couple of days but got the 8gb ram, do you guys think i need to upgrade to 16 for 2016-2018 games?
Anonymous Suomynona yea
Happy Christmas
+Chris H Merry Christmas to you too : )
random question, if you were to drop the resolution on the laptop to 1080p (with the oled display) would battery life improve? and would it look any good?
No it wouldn't make a difference.
how many storage units are allowed on this laptop? There's space for 2 SSD and 1 HDD, right?
Two M.2 slots, no HDD.
does it come with the 99whr battery like 15 inch model?
and whatz the cost of ur this model?
Do the sides of the computer light up, or is it just the 15 r3 and the 17 r4 that do that?
Amani Graham
From what I've seen, I think this model doesn't light up.
managed to order this laptop with the i5 8gb of ram but still keep the old display can't wait till it arrives also got the 256 GB ssd.
this might sound stupid but is the r3 the same as the new 13
+Lizardon612 yup the r3 just means the latest version . So he newest one is the Alienware 13 r3 last year would be Alienware 13 r2
I have the Dell Inspiron 15 7 thousand and something I forgot but it works like a charm I'm happy it has a GTX 1050 so I think it can handle VR
I don't understand... Dave Lee said around 4.5 hrs of battery life, Matt said 3, and in a review from LaptopMag I read 7hrs of battery life... How can everyone get such different results?!

Cool, thanks Matthew!
What is the purpose of the back vents??
there is something about gaming laptops which attracts me , but they are very expensive
great video btw
and that ports part tho!
Ya, they're pretty sweet when you get so much performance in such a small package. Thanks Hardik and Happy Holidays!
Matthew Moniz same to you
Happy new year.
+Funtime it's not sponsored. If it was sponsored I'd say so in the beginning and have it in the description. Merry Christmas!

Hello Matthew. Could you please help me?

Not very expensive, with 17 screen size.

Thanks Mate

Rafael Saidler I don't really care, I probably prefer here though
Husam Dweik. i just want to use the VR for training on flight simulator, i dont need something very expensive. I was using now the VR with my phone, but the quality on my phone is so bad, the streaming is not very good. im looking here some videos to try to change it, but i dont know if will works. I want spend the minimum, just for the flight simulator and i prefer a laptop, so i can carry to everywhere. thanks for your help mate
