"Gaming laptops are a waste of money. You can build a desktop for x amount of money cheaper" Some of us work for a living, and go on business trips with a lot of downtime. You want to try to bring a PC and a monitor onto a plane in your luggage which is already filled with all your business jazz, and then try to set all that crap up in your hotel room be my guest. You're paying for the convenience of portability, they're not overpriced, they're expensive because of the engineering challenges involved with putting all those components into the space of 3-4 liters of space. with a monitor, with wifi, with all the i/o, with speakers, with a keyboard, with a trackpad, etc.
Trevor Williamson shit they arnt even that expensive anymore. a desktop that I can't take on deployment or TDY schools costs about 1400 while a similar equipped gtx 1070 laptop costs 1560 ish. I'll get the laptop.
Trevor Williamson yeah good luck being in the military without buying a laptop, I built a great tower and bought a lower game capable laptop for deployments and schools.
As someone who is about to start driving for a living, a laptop is pretty much the only option. Besides, you can get a pretty decent gaming laptop for the money these days anyway. Hell, I can get something that rivals my year and a half old gaming rig (GTX 970 and an i5-4690K OC @ 4.4GHz) for just a few hundred more.
Exactly. I have a couple friends who are truckers and they also love to game, so they have that T-Mobile mobile hotspot and a gaming laptop in their big rig. One does cross country hauling so he has one of those cabs with a bunk in it, and is still able to play all his favorite games.
Many used cars that are some 5+ year old cost 2500 give or take. Cars lose value really fast when they get older even if they are in a really good condition. Ofc, it's a different story if you're on of those people who buy new cars every 2 years or so and sell your car at half of its original price. Most people are not like you.
Have had this laptop for about 3 months and its been my best pc experience i've ever had. Not only does it play any game at over 60fps but the battery life is actually pretty good, lasts around 4-6 hours even with brightness at 50%, editing on premiere, watching youtube and even rendering. Hate them or not, Alienware definitely knows how to make quality products. This thing is built like a beast.
PANoramic TV Hey dude, could I ask you like two questions ? I bought myself the Alienware m14x back in 2012 (previous Alienware laptop generation) and the only real problems I got with it about 2.5-3 year later were that the battery got ever worse with time (you had to keep it charging while playing or the FPS of good games would go down drastically, which eventually damages the battery) and that it was fucking complicated to clean the blades (the ones for refrigeration) because they you couldn't get them out of the laptop without dismantling the whole thing. Now I may be interested in buying myself a new Alienware, and I was curious if you saw similar issues or expect to have them later aswell.
Placki Plicki Well thats normal for any laptop i think. Especially when you use it for gaming, meaning the chassis gets hot relatively frequent. I suggest if and when you upgrade, use a cooling pad to prevent the temperatures from getting too high. I still have the 15 and have experienced no slow downs. Bottom line is Alienwares are just built very solid (especially the newer ones) and should last 5 years or even more. I know ill be keeping mine for a very long time.
PANoramic TV Ty, though my most important question was the other part ; have you tried opening it up to see if it's easy to clean the blades ? This is a big deal when it comes to gaming afterall.
Kyle Netherwood Of course phones have better microphones since its primary function is to call with people... That's not a strong argument in this case.
I lug around my old m17X R3 in a laptop bag with a 330W power brick. It weighs a lot- but let's put some perspective. Men in the past used to lug around their axe or sword, a shield, and a bag of supplies and march for kilometres. So man up! Awesome overview btw, I guess I know to do when it's time to upgrade the ol' girl
why do ppl think alienware is overpriced ? i mean 17" gtx 1080 costs 2400 euro and n razer blade 17" gtx 1080 costs 4500 euro. ok razer design is way cooler but the alienware fan noise or cps-gpu temp is way beter so yhea, what one is overpriced ? xD
For Alienware's laptops the 1070 onwards options are definitely overpriced if you're buying it without discounts or deals. Alienware Japan just had a Golden Week sale which along with tons of other discounts, allowed buyers to upgrade to the GTX 1080 for FREE if they got a model with the GTX 1070. Its quite an immense steal. The sale ended just last week though. Why get the models with the enthusiast-level cards (GTX 1070-1080) when these cards are overkill for 1080p gaming, and 4k gaming is almost unnoticeable with a 17-inch screen? 4k gives much better returns on larger screens. The GTX 1060 is more than enough for 60 FPS on max settings and 1080p for several games which is just about right for a 17-incher. I'd think for 4k gaming on max settings it would be better to just buy a regular (not mobile-version) GTX 1070 or 1080 and use Alienware's external GPU enclosure instead. MSI laptops have the same option.
i would say you are paying extra for mobility . try and compare the size and weight of the alienware vs razer and tell me which one would you like to carry around with.
Let me correct one thing you said: The battery is *not* a quick swap. I know this because the battery on my 2 year old laptop suddenly swelled up and was on the verge of exploding. (Per the internet, this is a common problem with this laptop.) Swapping it out involved removing the back, the drives, the Wifi, unhooking some cables, popping off the ports cover, removing the next layer of plastic, and *then*, I could reach the battery.
As an owner of the Alienware 15 Gaming (not really this comment is fake) I am proud to say that carrying this in my own 3 hands around the house has been wonderful. I've built up so much muscle that I am not able to bench the bar at the gym. I am on my way to becoming a strong boy.
I'm presently writing this comment on my Alienware 13" OLED and I must say that there is no laptop on the market that has a screen this gorgeous. Perfect Black levels and contrast ratio. I mainly play Diablo 3 with it and the GTX 1060 does an amazing job. I added another M.2 Drive(Samsung 950) and I especially like the fact that the 7700HQ has HEVC decoding, so watching movies on this screen is awesome. Performance is great(though the battery life I wish could be a bit better) but I have to admit that the Keyboard has the nicest touch out of any Laptop keyboard I have ever used and that goes with many hours of gaming in addition to writing. The amount of Ports on this is also amazing (Thunderbolt 3 in addition to USB-C and USB 3.0 ports). Its been 4 months that I have been using the AW 13" and if I were to do it all over again, I would get the exact same thing. Too bad AW does not offer OLED on the 15" or 17" models because I would have gotten that. Alienware have really stepped up their game(no pun intended) and it shows on the quality of this laptop. So glad I choosed this over the Razor. Good review Linus.
I just got the Alienware 13 R2 open box excellent at best buy for $769.99 looks and works like new. It has the Oled screen and yeah it is the best screen ive ever seen. I'm not sure if they revised the oled screen in the 13 r3 at all but r2 is 2560 x 1440p. It only has gtx 965m and dual core i7 6500u so that's why it was cheaper of course. I'm just a casual gamer tho but GTA V and Doom new version run pretty good on it. Do you guys think adding 8 gb ram to make it 16 GB ram total is worth it?
At the price of RAM is these days, I would go for it. Especially if your thinking of keeping the laptop for at least 2 years. In regards of the OLED Screen its going to be the same as in my R3. At the price you got your R2, it seems like a very nice deal. Enjoy :)
Could you please elaborate a bit more on the battery life? I'm considering getting this as a university laptop and I'd prefer 5+ hours (web browsing, coding, netflix, youtube) if possible :)
Preston Theken how is ur r4 performing?? I was thinking to buy r4 i7 8th gen gtx1070 .. How is vdo editing nd gaming experience?? Does it overheats nd lowers the performance of the laptop during vdo editing or gaming?
Wings On Wheels I have the 17 R4 and runs games smothly and rendering videos without problems.. Buy it! The only cons I have is its weight, but I used as desktop repleacement...
@@wings.on.wheels I read it that only occurs with the R5 17 with i9 and the GTX 1080... I don't ever have problem with that and I have had the laptop for almost 2 years. If the weight isn't a problem, go for it... You will not regreat
I just picked up the i5 6300hq 1060 6gb version for $160 3 months ago. Upgraded it with an SSD, an extra 8gb of RAM. It's a nice portable VR station, and with a type c to USB 3 adapter, I can even use 2 sensors.
Just wanted to say, I work at Fry's Electronics. I watch LTT and people like Bit Wit and JayzTwoCents, every single day, during lunch, when I got home, or whenever I have free time. I sale computers and getting updated on newer laptops and graphics cards helps a lot with my knowledge of the best tech that will eventually come in! I'm super glad you guys care about quality as well as the true info, along with a little comedy! Cheers guys and thanks so much for the multiple years of super great videos so far! 😊
I also have the 17 and take it to work with me every day. Not really an issue weightwise in a back pack! I did pick up 2 extra power packs and leave them at both offices though. those power bricks are huge and weigh more than my old laptop!
Jack Be Gaming it's not that heavy but it becomes heavier when you carry it longer, especially if you're a student that has 4 thick books and a 1 mile school to house location.
I carry the 15 everywhere! Not as bad as it seems in terms of weight, and it's a good trade off for screen size and build quality. Don't have to carry the charger that often because of the battery lasting about 4 to 5 hours. I have this exact spec and couldn't be happier. Third Alienware and haven't had issues with any of them.
That 13-R3 is my weapon of choice. The 1060GPU is more than enough for my daily gaming fix. Most of the time I'm hooking it up to my Monitor with Separate KB/M. I also love the option of the Desktop Graphics Booster for the future. Love this thing !!!
Awesome ! IMO - Alienware is the Ferrari of the Gaming Laptops. Sure, there might be better deals out there or other preferred styles but no matter who they are, when people who know anything about PCs and Gaming, once they see that Alienware logo on a laptop - you see their heads turn... There's just a sense of quality and performance with these laptops that you don't seem to get with other brands..
I think it's more about the fact that that much weight on your back while moving around and actually traveling isn't good. At least not for long periods of time.
+The_Red Bullet .....true, but in the overall scheme the perceivable difference between my bag weighing 11kg and 12kg is going to be small. and I could save more weight by just taking stuff out (or scanning my books in or downloading the pdf)
As an Alienware user for 3-4 years... The thing that they don't tell you... is that yes you can game really good on this, it has good support... if you expect to change your laptop after a year. I own an Alienware 15 R1 (2015) and drivers stopped getting updated a year ago (2016)... it still works pretty good, but I'm having compatibility issues with some drivers and windows 10.
With recent updates the audio controlers mess up, It's a bug that has been ongoing since windows 10 was released, controllers are not properly upated so everytime a big update comes for windows 10, you have to clean install audio drivers either way you can't use any headphone or microphone jack among other things. Also I've seen people been having a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE blue screen. So I been having this problem too, again... since I updated to Windows 10... drivers have not been updated since 2016 and some even from 2015 I'm kinda regretting this buy actually since there's a lack of driver support for a 2015 Computer imo.
Where is it then? I have searched for updated drivers and on Dell's page I don't see any update since 2016... Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I don't know but I certainly haven't found anything that helps my situation.
I had an m11x r2 that I accidentally spill some water on and the keyboard died and this was after the 1 yr warranty. Worked around it just using a USB keyboard for awhile, but decided to finally call up Dell and see if I can just order the part, they sent out a technician with a brand new keyboard, he installed it for me AND didn't charge a dime. I respect Dell for that.
I was thinking of buying this, but I felt like 13 inch would be more portable and I love the OLED display I do NOT regret it at all, it's vr ready and the display... OH THE DISPLAY!
I got the Alienware 17 R4 this past Jan and love it. I only paid $2k ($2,600 base price) directly from Dell and got the 500gig NVME drive and fastest RAM I could get upgrades. It still ties or beats my desktop (which has a GTX 1080) in game benchmarks.
+F Funtes, Throwing 20+ pounds on my back is nothing, and I barely feel it. Then again I'm also very active and work in the trades so maybe I'm special.
I am still surprised people push for touch screen on laptop. I tried a few and they were terrible. I see people use them all the time and they look pathetic. Screen wiggling around and user tries to scroll while finger hits the screen unintentionally while wiggling. I have used ThinkPad for years now and I cannot see myself go from TrackPoint any time soon. It just feels better and my screen is smudge-free. I would like to see an experiment, maybe, of someone from LMG to live with a TrackPoint laptop instead of a touch screen one.
Just bought the R3 15" i7 7700 with GTX1060, 60 hz no GSYNC panel. So far I love it! 13" screen is too small for me to game on. Its main competition was MSI, which is also an elegant machine with similar price, specs and performance and definitely lighter. Two things decided me in favor of Alienware - build quality and battery life. Just got back from Europe and played 2 hours of Skyrim each way on the plane on ultra settings, 30 fps on battery (60 fps no problem plugged in). My desktop rig has GTX 1070 with a 27" GSYNC 144 hz monitor. I don't need me laptop to be a desktop replacement, but I travel a lot for work so I wanted to be able to bring along something to game on flights and in hotel with. Setup was a breeze.
In a gaming laptop 87C isn't terribly out of the ordinary for CPU temp. Many a laptop have had far worse, sometimes to the point of throttling under load.
I've seen Luke show off Alienwares at 3 consecutive CESs. They never asked for one till the AW13 OLED? What was most disappointing was that Linus never reviewed Alienware when they first came out with their Graphics Amp; they WERE the first ones to release that, before MSI, Razer and ASUS released similar products.
Saw the 13 OLED review long ago and pined for it ever since but never could afford one. Couple of weeks ago saw a heavily discounted OLED 13 on dells outlet website as it was marked as scratched and dented and nervously decided to pull the trigger. Laptop arrived the other day without any damage whatsoever, just no original box. Best money on tech I ever spent! Not sure how I am going to go back to any other screen now..
I really enjoyed the studio set up's along with the color lighting backdrops plus I like how the LTT group members have been increasingly showing their presence in the footage with your videos. Keep up the great work!
I get that things are lighter, but saying that 3kg is too heavy for most people to carry around is such bullshit. He's lost track of the real world if he claims that as an actual problem. I've got key rings that are heavier than that laptop.
You can routinely find these at a discount. For $1,200 out the door I was able to pick up a model with a 7300HQ (quad core i5), 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD and GeForce 1060 6GB. Throw in some more SSD space and RAM if you want, and for well under $1,500 you're good to go. Quad core i5's are a bit slow (clock speed-wise) though.
I have the 17 R4, previously owned a 17 R3, the improvements in thermals and fan noise are insane. I only wish I'd gotten the 1070 instead of the 1060 but i'm still pretty happy with the performance.
I just want a gaming laptop for portability. I already have a gaming desktop that is mini itx but still a pain to unplug everything for LAN parties. A gaming laptop would be ideal but I can't afford one right now.
Why do people always comment this same shit? Like, do you not understand other people have money, and they don't post comments on budget videos like "another laptop I could afford 5 of!". Stop trying to get likes from people just as broke as you.
i struggle to have a gamimg experience on the go between both my parents houses. I have a pc here vut i dont down my dads. its one of those things where my intel atom tablet looks like a gaming machine :l
I wasn't asking for likes. I was simply making a statement with no thought as to the result. I don't care how many rich people there are out there but I have the right and the freedom to express my opinion. You also have the same right to express yours so now that we have expressed our own opinions we can go our separate ways.
Just got an M16 for a spectacular deal through my jobs extra benefits across other companies. Got it for 1000 bucks directly through dell. Has a ryzen 9 Radeon RX7800XT 32 gb ram 1 tb ssd Ive barely used it but im coming from a entry level HP Pavilion 15 with an i5 and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650. So it feels like i went from a 4 cylinder car to a 12 cylinder car lmao
I had an Alienware for 7 years! It was one of the best computers I have ever owned. It got me through college and beyond. Gaming until the day I sold it (Now that I am older I had to upgrade to a Wacom Mobile Studio Pro). The only downside was the weight of my Alienware it felt like 60lbs in a bag! terrible for travel :(
After watching this review I realised that unlike the laptop shown in the review my Alienware 15 r3 (1060, i7-6700hq, 8gb ram) often sounds like at jet engine while running under load. I've had mine for 5 months I would highly recommended it as long as you don't mind the weight.
ZonatedTooth27 no I think you're reading the chart wrong. The red"overheating detected" is a label for the red line on the bottom chart...that red line is at 0% for the whole chart
This is a load of barnacles How are 'The cheapest heatsink on the market', 'The most bizzare keyboard, or 'The most expensive console killer yet' sex jokes in any way???
will this setup work? -Ballistix Sport LT 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) DIMM 288-Pin - BLS2K4G4D240FSE (Red) - MSI GeForce gtx 1050 ti -Rosewill ATX Mid Tower Gaming Case with Tempered Glass Panels -WD Blue 1TB SATA 6 Gb/s 7200 RPM 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch -EVGA 430 W1, 80+ WHITE 430W power supply -Intel BX80677G4560 7th Gen Pentium Desktop Processors -MSI Pro Series Intel B250 LGA 1151 DDR4 USB 3.1 micro-ATX Motherboard
Do you recommend a backpack that adequately fits this laptop? I just ordered a new 2017 model of the 15 R3, but because of the hinge-forward design I'm worried it can't fit into most 15" laptop backpacks. The vindicator and ROG Nomad would obviously work but I'm looking for a bag that doesn't stand out around my grad school campus. The laptop....well I've already accepted that it'll receive some attention.
what is so bad about it? if you were to complain about the previous alienware for having a dual core proccesor, i would have understood but i don't really see anything bad about this one tho.
Gaming laptops are such a mystery to me. They use more power which drains the battery meaning you need to have it plugged in all the time.... which kinda defeats the purpose of it being a portable device. I ended up buying a dell inspiron 15 7000, it has a gtx1050ti that can play BF1 on medium-high while still being efficient enough to last 8hrs+ at university. It's silent, has a num-pad, powerful enough to do any task, is about 1kg less than that alienware shit and has a nicer finish that doesn't scream "I bought this laptop instead of having friends".
Gaming laptops exist not necessarily because people want to game unplugged on battery life, but because they don't have the room for a desktop or need a mobile PC with decent power. I use various architectural 3D modeling programs and adobe products for school and we are required to have a laptop to use these programs in our studio (design course). I got a gaming laptop because I was looking at spending a minimum of $1000 for a laptop for school but I still wanted to game on PC, I didn't want to spend >2500 for two computers to satisfy both needs so I just got a gaming laptop. It's very nice to be able to play a round of Overwatch or any other game at >60FPS in between classes. Other people I know are never home due to work or school and like to game from wherever they are and go for a gaming laptop. I do agree with you that a "lower tier" non-gaming laptop is a better choice for most people, but most people don't want anything more than 30-60FPS gaming, these gaming laptops are for people who are on the go but want a better gaming experience. I also agree that gaming laptop aesthetics (and gamer aesthetic) in general are terrible, the gigabyte p series and razer blade pro are my jam tho, dell's XPS laptops are sexy too, but the new gigabyte aero series look the best.
also guess it depends on pricing. In Australia the xps is roughly $2400, base model alienware laptops are $2500. $1000 here buys you a cardboard box with laptop written on it in texta..... So pretty much if you can afford a $3000k+ laptop you can afford a decent dektop as well.
All things considered, the price point for the 1060 doesn't seem too steep. The display seems perfectly usable, and the I/O options don't look half bad either. I'd probably opt to up the SSD to at least a 256GB with a 1TB HDD though. Weight and battery capacity isn't a huge issue, since I'd mostly be using it on the road and have a power source nearby, as well as a place to stow it. Seems like a pretty decent machine.
Interestingly, I own the 13 inch R3 version and I love it. However, when I opened it up to install an extra SSD, I found that half of the actual body screws underneath the bottom cover hadn't been screwed in at the factory... They were there, but they were shaking around. Might be worth checking if you own one of these machines
Everything about it was alright really. The only thing I really despise was the wasted space on the keyboard. My hands felt cramped with the way it centers to the screen.
A 14" Ultrabook with gaming perfomance specs is all I ask for. So far no one has provided something that ships to or sells in Norway. IS IT SO MUCH TO ASK FOR?!
Someones selling his alien ware r2 15 for 2nd hand cheap price to me my question is this beast still good this year? 2021 what gen is this? Thanks for helping me
I have the 15 and the 17. I needed the 15 to travel. The 17 is too big and weighs too much. I played through Crysis, Crysis 2 and Crysis Warhead on it. It's a SOLID gaming Laptop and a beastly creation. Money well spent.
6:09 You forgot what makes this thing so special On the back is a port where you can put a video card in so if the video card isn’t keeping up with the new games you can buy the new on and just slip it into that port I have an Alienware 15 r4 myself and I love it Otherwise good review/comparison
Nope. My 13 r3 just died of overheating. It was only 2,5 years old with my 2 years warranty just expired... It died out of the blue while in standby with no heavy tasks running. I love my laptop and am still grieving for the loss.
went from a late 2014 alienware 13 with a i5 4200u and a 860m to a predator 15 with a 6700hq and a 1060 6gb. the alienware was pretty thin but lacked performance when i wanted it and the predator is a monster (size and weight) but never falls short of any task. IMO bigger is better having had both. i would sacrifice (and did) the portability of my old machine to lose the headache of not being able to play certain games when i really wanted to. also i have to admit when the lighting controls are configured correctly an alienware can look much more "businessy/sophisticated" as opposed to the predator where some keys are permanantly red and there are red vents all over it. luckily im a 20 year old automotive student so i never have to bring my laptop into any meetings or business environments, but if i did have to do that the alienware would be the better choice because of the black/grey chassis and no permanent red vents on all sides lol. great video LTT keep it up. sorry i keep editing this comment longer but, i also have to agree that when i had the alienware 13 even being a 2014 not a 2017 it did feel very premium and high build quality. having said all of this, of all of the pc's/ pc components i've ever bought my predator 15 is the thing i am most happy about and have the least regrets about purchasing. because of this i say bigger is better. can also atest to the glitches with 2 finger scrolling on alienwares. the problem has existed for the 3 years i had my alienware and has not been fixed since, cmon dell.
Here I am and I just bought myself an Alienware 17 (more for the full-size keyboard w/ numpad than anything else.). I got the model with a GTX 1060, 16 gb 2667 mHz, i7 7700HQ (3.8 gHz). If 6.6 pounds were heavy for you guys than the A17R4's 9.6 pounds would be downright unbearable. You guys didn't mention the Alienware's external graphics options? Its something it shares with certain MSI laptops as well.
Alienware did a coffee lake refresh... and they added much better cooling with a vapor chamber and better thermal compound and better fans. Should I got for the new 15 with a 1070 overclocked or the 13 with a quad core and a 1060 and OLED? I play fortnite, and FPS, as well as story based cinematic games.
The thing I noticed most was the fact that the trackpad has actual buttons instead of being one of those stupid things where the trackpad is the button. Do any other manufacturers do this?
Finally a comparison that has been stopping me from going for AW13R3!! Although I wish there were more price based comparisons (e.g. AW13R3 vs Dell XPS 15; both of them being portable - in their own ways - and at around 2000USD is a tough choice to make).
What about the 17? I had an Alienware 17 for a couple of years and she was great. I did go back to Asus, not because Alienware machines are bad just the price. If given the choice between two machines, spec'd the same, I would take the Alienware just because if it's more durable outer shell.
I have an AW15 and couldn't be happier with it can play games amazingly and can use it as a pretty good daily driver. It's not that heavy to me at all either. To each their own.
I love bigger screen for gaming . and old has that reflective screen which is very annoying almost in any place. plus you got a room for cheaper HDD so that you can have tons of music, movies and your whole gaming library (1tb costs not more than 60$)
the OLED panel will have burn in whereas the TN panel with its 120hz refresh rates will allow you to look down upon the peasantry for far longer and with more precision :D
Hey, can you do a review on the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition from this year? It looks amazing on paper specs-wise for just $1200 (cheap as far as gaming laptops are concerned) and it looks professional and pretty sleek too. It would be great if you did a video showing whether it's really all its cut out to be based on the specs. The few decent reviewers that have reviewed it have had differing ideas on its viability for gaming and whether the cooling system is good or not, and it would be great to have everything cleared up once and for all.
The "fact" is that the Alienware Laptops are managed to keep the CPU around 80 to 90 (gaming is around 80) to keep their fan noise down. It can keep the hardware much cooler, but much noisier and it unlock the full power of the fan (without "fan performance mode", the fan can go up to 5000RPM; with "Fan Performance Mode" ON, it can spin up to 6000RPM, but much noisier in either idle or during gaming). :-)
No worry about thermal issues. My friend has the 15 inch same PC, 7700hq and GTX 1070 and it always thermal throttles, and I had him over at my house one time, and my laptop turned into his while he was over. Rip Acer nitro 5.
Do you guys do reviews for mobile workstations? The college I'm going to requires me to get at least: i7 7700hq, 16gb ddr4 ram, 1tb HDD + some SSD, quadro 2200m amd wifi. The college recommends the Dell Precision 7520 but I don't see any very reliable (?I guess) reviews of that specific model, and I want to see if there is a cheaper and better alternative to that. The college has a $1000 discount for that so drops it down to around $2000.
Thank god my M17x R4 (120hz 3D) still kicks ass. Wouldn't know what to upgrade to. I do have a gaming pc for home use but for going on trips that thing is very nice.
Most people don't wanna carry a 3 kg laptop in the backpack every day... I was carrying for 3 years in Afghani desert a 9kg rifle with 5kg more gear on me and never complained a word.
"Gaming laptops are a waste of money. You can build a desktop for x amount of money cheaper"
Some of us work for a living, and go on business trips with a lot of downtime. You want to try to bring a PC and a monitor onto a plane in your luggage which is already filled with all your business jazz, and then try to set all that crap up in your hotel room be my guest.

If you show up with an alienware notebook on a business trip they'll laugh at you lmao
If most people are worried about carrying 3Kg in their backpack then i am worried about the average strength of humans these days...
I think it comes to be more of "3KG combined with the other 8-12KG" putting it just over the limit of "comfortable" to "annoying."
You're not packing that much unless you're going on a plane ride....
Atleast u be packing some wights is like a 2 thumnails put toggther with 189 pounds
for a gaming laptop i would be willing to carry an extra 10kg. i mean its better than lugging around a 20kg desktop amirite?
honestly, if u carry for a minute it feels ok but when u carry 3kg for a hour to travel u will feel the difference
no one cares about touch screens anyways.. totally pointless on pc if you ask me
LordMustangGT93 touch screen is nice for productivity laptops, but shouldn't be on a gaming laptop
Agreed. Hell, most places you set up shop with it you'd probably want to have at least a lap desk using a mouse anyway.
a touchscreen on a gaming laptop is pure gimmick
13 r3 is not just for gaming, it's a sort of productivity laptop with gaming accent with a good gaming capability.
but it looks so shit because its so focused on being a pure gaming machine
Lunch money? More like... Car money...
Traumâțu' Mîț Mîț It's $1200 for the base model. Can't buy it? Then don't.
yes, if you choose to skip lunch, and save the money for 6-7 years, you can buy it, and by that year, it can be cheaper than now
Traumâțu' Mîț Mîț kidney money
you can't buy a car for $1899, lol
It doesn't come cheap. But if what PANoramic TV is saying is true, you definitely get your money's worth.
PANoramic TV what are your thermals when your playing some of your favorite games?
You say Dell getting serious about audio and then show us that microphone.
Kyle Netherwood It's not "series" dumbass.
do you really expect a laptop microphone to be on bar with Mic mod 4.0 or a full studio one? really?
a e s t h e t i c A typo
Nam Phan There are phones with a better mic than that
Kyle Netherwood Of course phones have better microphones since its primary function is to call with people...
I have an m17x R4 they’re really heavy, i believe 4,4 kg :p
why do ppl think alienware is overpriced ? i mean 17" gtx 1080 costs 2400 euro and n razer blade 17" gtx 1080 costs 4500 euro. ok razer design is way cooler but the alienware fan noise or cps-gpu temp is way beter so yhea, what one is overpriced ? xD
Sander Van Den Akker which*?
Sander Van Den Akker and that is why my friend that both brands are overpriced
Oops I mean all gaming laptops
***** and when you buy a razer blade or apple you dont play for bragging rights?
Let me correct one thing you said: The battery is *not* a quick swap. I know this because the battery on my 2 year old laptop suddenly swelled up and was on the verge of exploding. (Per the internet, this is a common problem with this laptop.) Swapping it out involved removing the back, the drives, the Wifi, unhooking some cables, popping off the ports cover, removing the next layer of plastic, and *then*, I could reach the battery.
I did the same thing, you get used to it. Also my AWCC just gave out on mine, no fan controls and no rgb 😔
As an owner of the Alienware 15 Gaming (not really this comment is fake) I am proud to say that carrying this in my own 3 hands around the house has been wonderful. I've built up so much muscle that I am not able to bench the bar at the gym. I am on my way to becoming a strong boy.
Any strong boy progress?
3KG is heavy? Do you even lift?
hes like 1,20m tall so i guess its a lot for him
You should meet my 2007 toshiba with 2.7KG which was never a top end laptop and is made of plastic, supposedly lighter than metal.
Malte Roeper lmao 1.2m 😂😂😂
Rich piano is my favorite natty
Jaffas have you ever tried to carry a 3kgs of weight with you everyday and in your bag that is
I'm presently writing this comment on my Alienware 13" OLED and I must say that there is no laptop on the market that has a screen this gorgeous.
David Kaldor hey I got a alienate 15 r3 and the battery life is only like 2 to 3hrs
Kenneth Chartrand
To think that the Alienware 15 is large is funny to me considering that I have the Alienware 17 r4...
Preston Theken how is ur r4 performing??
I was thinking to buy r4 i7 8th gen gtx1070
..
Juan García well weight is not a big problem for me..
The only issue i found in some vdos is it heats up alot nd cooling is nit grt...
Is it true???
@@wings.on.wheels I read it that only occurs with the R5 17 with i9 and the GTX 1080... I don't ever have problem with that and I have had the laptop for almost 2 years. If the weight isn't a problem, go for it... You will not regreat
Preston Theken that’s nothing I use to have the m18x .Now that thing was large.I got the 15 r3 now. Thing is super light to me.
Not 1....not 2......but 3Kg
First Last well not alienware's fault that you aren't strong enough
First Last profile pic matches yout comment lel
How many miles are u going to carry it?🤣 pretty sure the weight is only in your head
Carlos Andrade THANK YOU
omg.. can't imagine it u need a trolley or something 🤣
You think that's heavy. lol I have the 17. 😑
So do I man. Its like lifting a lead brick
TingsaGwarn yeah it's too heavy to carry with u. If ur keeping it in one place then I guess it's alright
Lol I have no choice but to keep it in one place 😂 it's not a laptop it's a mobile station
I also have the 17 and take it to work with me every day. Not really an issue weightwise in a back pack! I did pick up 2 extra power packs and leave them at both offices though. those power bricks are huge and weigh more than my old laptop!
You think that's heavy? I have a desktop >.>
6.6 Lbs is heavy now a days? Yall need to lift.
Jack Be Gaming it's not that heavy but it becomes heavier when you carry it longer, especially if you're a student that has 4 thick books and a 1 mile school to house location.
squat 3 15's each side
you can download the books and only carry the laptop but ok
Try lifting 6.6 Lbs. 5000 times. I bet it would be heavy then.
who the fuck lifts a laptop 5000 times straight?
Crying about 3kg? I get you guys are twig armed but still, its not like you have to game while walking?
I think it's more about the fact that that much weight on your back while moving around and actually traveling isn't good. At least not for long periods of time.
+AbuBakr Akram .....my bag is about 10-14kg depending on the day. 3kg is actually pretty light on your back (Edit: I accidentally wrote a 110-14kg)
legendp2011 yep
legendp2011 But it's not like thats the only thing you will have on your back. Shit gets heavy when you need to stuff some more inside a bag.
I have a M15x from 2011 and it works great so I don't know what you're on about.
So I been having this problem too, again... since I updated to Windows 10... drivers have not been updated since 2016 and some even from 2015
I'm kinda regretting this buy actually since there's a lack of driver support for a 2015 Computer imo.
I see your old AW and raise you a Core 2 Duo Dell that works fine on Win 10 x86 with Vista drivers
Hey Linus! Any chance you guys can review the new Gigabyte Aero 15?
I was thinking of buying this, but I felt like 13 inch would be more portable and I love the OLED display I do NOT regret it at all, it's vr ready and the display... OH THE DISPLAY!
I got the Alienware 17 R4 this past Jan and love it. I only paid $2k ($2,600 base price) directly from Dell and got the 500gig NVME drive and fastest RAM I could get upgrades. It still ties or beats my desktop (which has a GTX 1080) in game benchmarks.
What about screen burn in on the Alienware 13? Should I be worried about that?
I've never thought I'd see the day that Linus would get sick of too much RGB...
6lbs? haha that's not even that bad
Yeah, try carrying a 6lb laptop along with a bunch to textbooks and notebooks and you will definitely feel the weight.
Yes i see what he means but for what it is that's not actually that heavy
i would carry my backpack with about 4books and 4notepads and a bunch of shit, about 12kg 28pounds and i could barely feel it
i used to daily a dell inspiron 1300 and that weighs about 3kg, i got used to that so i could sure as hell take one of these
+F Funtes, Throwing 20+ pounds on my back is nothing, and I barely feel it.
3:00 "no danger of overheating" *"OVERHEATING DETECTED"* ok lad
That's the red metric with the 0% in the bottom right corner. You can see it better before it zooms in.
Shadow of War Ultra Settings, overheats to like 96°
Since when is 87 deg acceptable?
In a gaming laptop 87C isn't terribly out of the ordinary for CPU temp. Many a laptop have had far worse, sometimes to the point of throttling under load.
Linus reviewing an Alienware!? Hell hath frozen over!
Or they just sent it over because he asked for it.
Awesome Tech Preach haha
2:24 so with the last two you pay $449.00 for 8 gigs extra of ram?
Yea what the actual fuck?
One is 1080P and the other is 4K
it has a 4k display. Read the description
Linus Paid $200 for a 1 meter camera cable, so paying $449.00 for 8 gigs extra of ram make a lot of sense
Yes but you an order 8 gigs of ram on amazon for $50 saving $400
a 3 kilo laptop is heavy what do you think about people that go to school like me they have a rucksack of 7 to 8 kilo,s
Sil Keizer yeah because you game at school ofcourse lol
@@matthijs5789 its actually more expensive alot of the times to buy a laptop and desktop.
I sold one of my kidney's for 5k to buy the best one worth it.
Another expensive laptop I can't afford!
you don't want to afford this one.
Yeah 6.6 LBS. is nothing. I checked my schoolbag that I have to carry every day. 23.9 pounds according to the scale.
Just got an M16 for a spectacular deal through my jobs extra benefits across other companies.
Got it for 1000 bucks directly through dell.
Has a ryzen 9
Radeon RX7800XT
32 gb ram
1 tb ssd
Ive barely used it but im coming from a entry level HP Pavilion 15 with an i5 and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650.
The only downside was the weight of my Alienware it felt like 60lbs in a bag! terrible for travel :(
5:50 i thought its a GIRL but it was not😂😂😂

MY GOD THOSE BEZZELS
Mankirat Singh I'm probability not buying one for that reason. I mean, look at that bottom bezel... HIDEOUS! Plus, the screens look like shit.
Alexander Bailey cause of the bottom bezel...
After watching this review I realised that unlike the laptop shown in the review my Alienware 15 r3 (1060, i7-6700hq, 8gb ram) often sounds like at jet engine while running under load. I've had mine for 5 months I would highly recommended it as long as you don't mind the weight.
3:05 "Neither of them where in danger of overheating or throttling at any time " but it says overheating detected in AIDA 64.
ZonatedTooth27 no I think you're reading the chart wrong. The red"overheating detected" is a label for the red line on the bottom chart...that red line is at 0% for the whole chart
$11 Hr 12 hour shift.... What do I buy making almost $1000 a week.

Poor hardware, Acer Predator 21X is much more practical!
Rafal Iwanczuk Hahaha funny joke
Rafal Iwanczuk laughed that shit
Rafal Iwanczuk doesnt that weigh like 15 pounds
this has to be a joke
that's a joke. you are definitely stupid if you're going to buy that unnecessarily overpowered autistic gaming laptop
He problem is that it's an Alienware
someone is jealous
someone is older than 13
what is so bad about it? if you were to complain about the previous alienware for having a dual core proccesor, i would have understood but i don't really see anything bad about this one tho.
Its gaudy and overpriced
i will give you that. it is a little bit over the top with the pointless rgb at the sides but overpriced really?
It is a bit pointles
Why pay more for this ugly besle buy a xps 15
xps isn't a gaming laptop... GTX 1070 > GTX 1050
Might be worth checking if you own one of these machines
overpriced shit, $2.1K for the most expensive one with an 1070 lmao...

You forgot what makes this thing so special
On the back is a port where you can put a video card in so if the video card isn’t keeping up with the new games you can buy the new on and just slip it into that port
I have an Alienware 15 r4 myself and I love it
Otherwise good review/comparison
I tend to like it thicker, it feels more solid and pronounced. It feels great to hold and tends to be pleasing on the lap.
Ic fourth system ma
See how well designed that notebook is? You open the thing and the entire PCB is covered and protected. Excellent construction.
What about the 17?
I had an Alienware 17 for a couple of years and she was great. I did go back to Asus, not because Alienware machines are bad just the price. If given the choice between two machines, spec'd the same, I would take the Alienware just because if it's more durable outer shell.
I just bought this as my first gaming laptop. I'm glad I didn't get the 17 inch because even the 15.3 inch seems big as I got used to it lol.
still got this........ saving up for a new gaming pc tho
I like the new editing style that this video has. I hope they continue doing it, but keep it at this level.
I have an AW15 and couldn't be happier with it can play games amazingly and can use it as a pretty good daily driver. It's not that heavy to me at all either. To each their own.
I have the Alienware 13 which was bought 2011 still works pretty well to this day
I love bigger screen for gaming . and old has that reflective screen which is very annoying almost in any place. plus you got a room for cheaper HDD so that you can have tons of music, movies and your whole gaming library (1tb costs not more than 60$)
the OLED panel will have burn in whereas the TN panel with its 120hz refresh rates will allow you to look down upon the peasantry for far longer and with more precision :D
I had an alienware 13. Sold it and built a desktop. Kinda want the alienware back though. It was more fun to game on for some strange reason.
The few decent reviewers that have reviewed it have had differing ideas on its viability for gaming and whether the cooling system is good or not, and it would be great to have everything cleared up once and for all.
dude when do we get an LTT talkshow on this set? i would consider my first patreon-ing for that.
My current laptop is about 10lb. I have no problems with carrying it around. cant say the same about performance, but it was made back in 2010
The "fact" is that the Alienware Laptops are managed to keep the CPU around 80 to 90 (gaming is around 80) to keep their fan noise down.
Why was there a difference of just five fps in Rise of The Tomb Raider? I just think it should be a larger difference...
Jonas David Bauer more of a CPU intensive game so after a certain limit GPU doesn't matter much, the limit is around 1060 performance
I don't get it. The 15" gaming laptop I bought in 2002 to take to college was 6.6lbs, and it had a damn optical drive.
Thank god my M17x R4 (120hz 3D) still kicks ass. Wouldn't know what to upgrade to. I do have a gaming pc for home use but for going on trips that thing is very nice.
When ever I see Dennis smiling I just want to scream out 'GOD DAMN IT JIAN YANG'!
Most people don't wanna carry a 3 kg laptop in the backpack every day... I was carrying for 3 years in Afghani desert a 9kg rifle with 5kg more gear on me and never complained a word.
congrats with your 4 million subs!!!
Keep up the good work and greets from Belgium!!
Bigger can often be better mostly because of cooling and hopefully you can open it to clean it up, that is after warranty period.
What do you guys think. Alienware 15R3 or XPS 9560? Need help picking, in a dilemma.
I suppose you expect an Avago mouse to be Ergonomic. No doubt, this one is. But I had some time-consuming problems loading the right drivers.
Aren't some OLED monitors supposed to reach up to 2000hz? Has anyone tried over locking the Alienware 13 laptops display.
Did he actually drop it or was it cinematics?! 🤷♂️🤷♂️
