RTX is on its way so please don't worry! The AERO 15 was stuck in Alaska from Taiwan and delayed so the time I took off work for that was spent on this video. I have the Aero in possession now and I will be getting to work on that along with more testing with the GT75.
Once we can get enough subs and views I can afford to slack on my main job and focus more on B.O.A.T.

Got mine for 1400€ here in germany on Cyber Monday (2018), directly from Dells site. It wass the cheapest Config with OLED and GTX 1060 (8GB RAM, lowest capacity ssd) and I upgraded it wit a 2 TB SSD and 16GB's of RAM. Best decision ever! I ended up spending around 2000€ in total, and even though I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, it works great for me. As the panel is locked to 60Hz and doesn't have gsync, it's not for hardcore gamers. I do a lot of photo editing and I play games casually, so the display was the thing that caught my eye. I know what this machine is capable to do and if I ever needed more, I'd build a PC and still have a very portable Laptop that is great for everything on the go. I don't have a lot of money and really needed a machine to take with me (for example to my friends), so nobody could tell me I made the wrong decision. Also it is possible to upgrade the graphics with an gpu enclosure (with thunderbolt, or alienwares graphic amplifier, which delivers even better performance), which makes the CPU the only bottleneck which can't be upgraded. Still great in 2019, if you are the kind of person who needs this (like me). The other thing is that it's build like a tank, so I think it will hold up longer than other gaming laptop or ultrabook. Let me know if you would pick up something different if you were me. P.S. Only game with the power adapter, as the performans drops significantly while on battery (every game lags, as if the machine is connected to a very bad TV... Or even worse).

I fell in love with this device 2 years ago but it was always so expensive. Almost $2000 new and $1400 cheapest on Dell outlet. On Valentine's day, they had a 14% off coupon AND 14% cashback so I jumped to buy the Oled/8gb ram model for $1100 after tax. I regret nothing. The battery life is great (~6:30). The screen is great (100% RGB!). The gaming performance is still good.
My use-case is 80% work and 20% games so I care more about the screen, keyboard, and battery life and this little guy is amazing in all aspects.

@@zZDeGaNsk8eRZz yeah. Still my daily driver. Replaced the Keyboard (I wanted to lube it and ended up destroying the electronics in some keys) and the fans (I think the bearings broke. They made a very loud annoying sound as they ramped up). The fans are quite easy to replace and in general it is easy to open (for the keyboard I had to disassemble the whole machine, but it wasn't as big of a problem as you might think). Am still happy with my decision. Even if I end up buying something else, this is still great for travelling. In addition it is built like a tank.

This was my first choice 2 years ago as soon as I got out of the Apple environment. I preferred looking for something more light and portable since my last Apple daily driver was a 2014 MacBook Air but to this day I'm still keeping an eye on this Dell masterpiece for a sudden offer. It's thick as hell but it makes it up with the compact size an that OLED display, and proprietary connection for its own Graphics Amplifier that has better bandwidth for eGPU applications than TB3. I'm sad Dell dropped it.

Finally got your hands on one! I've had mine for 2 months now. -125mv core and cache in Throttlestop and I rarely go over 80c on CPU and GPU. Although, the games I play aren't battlefield 5! Regardless, your points are valid on the discontinuing of the Alienware 13. I love it, despite it being chunky for the screen size. However, although I've adapted to the smaller screen, I'm left wishing it was a larger screen... Really my only complaint about it. I may hold onto it, then again, I have considered selling it and opting for a 17" gaming laptop (perhaps the g7?). Anyway, as always, great video Bob.

I have owned this laptop and used it since it came out, and I have to say with the exception of a bit of heat, its been an awesome laptop. I think the main reason Dell is ceasing it (for now) is that laptops are progressively thinner and lighter, and the new video card format for slim systems is making it hard to justify the size compromise for many folks. Coupled with that is the fact that the OLED panel, the ace-in-the-hole (trust me, the best IPS cannot compare) is no longer made. That being said, it is good enough that with the exception of six cores, there is just no reason for me to give it up. I am hopefuly a new version will come out again, I think it will actually.

I've used mine for four years. Great laptop. Love the OLED screen - well worth optioning. Had two fan replacements and a motherboard replacement under warranty first and out of warranty second under NZ consumer law (entitled for it to work for a reasonable period of time, not just warranty period). Also had the speakers replaced. The speakers still sound a little bad at loud volume - a problem not present when laptop was brand new.
It'll be hard to justify an upgrade unless there's something with an OLED panel available, and that's not something you see much on the market. Luckily I don't game much anymore haha! Hoping it doesn't break again, because I think I'd be screwed now and have to pay for repair.
I just wish it had a macbook like mousepad. But that's basically the worst thing about it, it's an excellent machine otherwise.

I picked this up on sale for $1400 off dell during Christmas in 2017. Got the 7700hk version too. The amplifier is honestly a really good addition to this. If I want to game at my friends house I have enough power to do so, when I come home I dock it to my GA with a GTX 1080ti FE and it keeps alot of heat off of my R3 and I only get about a 5% loss in performance potential with the bandwidth limitation on the alienware graphics port. I think its a pretty nice hybrid set up if you appreciate portability and power in the same right.

I’d say it is the finest Alienware 13-inch gaming laptop they’ve ever made, everything about it was perfect except when it came to some of its proprietary software which was a nightmare for me initially. But nitpicking aside, I love it, I have the 1080p IPS version, along with 16GB RAM, GTX 1060 and 512GB SSD. Every game I throw at it, it devours like the hungry beast that it is. It’s a shame they’ve discontinued it, but I have hopes that someday it may make a glorious return.

What a lovely little machine! That screen looks gorgeous too :) Ages ago I had a Toshiba Satellite P50t-C-109 with 4k touchscreen and I LOVED it!! Had a GTX950 4GB in it and 12GB ram (shit now, but for the time, when it was maybe (?) the first laptop to have a 4k touchscreen...it was mind blowing!) Only thing was, it couldn't actually handle anything at 4k (gaming or even streaming video) without bottlenecking and chugging, so the screen was pretty redundant!!
On that note, have you ever thought of doing retro laptop reviews once in a while? Maybe getting hold of laptops from a few years ago and seeing how they hold up with todays games etc.? That would be super interesting :)

I bought this laptop i7-7700HQ with GTX 1060 6gb, 16 gb DDR4 RAM and 1/0.5 Tb NVMe SSD.. I paid a lot to be honest, but I didn't regret it. The Oled panel on this thing is incredible. I've never seen a laptop screen come even close to this one in terms of colors and crisp details. Plus, if you haven't seen the black color on Oled panels, then you haven't seen black at all. I mainly played BF1 on it (while recording my gameplay at 60fps). It never disappointed.. I had the smoothest most stable experience. But when it came to BFV.. the cpu was bottlenecking the gpu on this setting. I had to change the resolution from QHD to FHD.. and turn everything down to medium. That's when I felt the smoothness and speed of the game. Also, I had to put the cpu on constant performance mode which boosts the speed from 2.8 ghz to 3.2 - 3.4 Ghz. In short, it's the best laptop I've ever owned.. but the cpu on this thing isn't that great.

Hey Bob, was wondering about the 9260 wifi upgrade. I still have the killer WiFi card and was thinking about upgrading. There was an Intel 9260 WiFi card on Amazon for $14.99 but it said No Vpro? Are there different variants of the card? You stated it's a simple plug and play upgrade? No drivers to download? Looking forward to more videos on this computer. I'm in search for a well cooled laptop with a rigid chassis for longevity, a great keyboard for studying, a not too crazy looking chassis for college and a gtx 1060 to be able to game in the evening (doesn't have to be best settings, as long as every game runs smooth for a few hours I'm fine). Is this my best pick? Theres a good discount right now in Germany and other laptops with same gpu (but better CPU) are just a little cheaper.

Nice video BOB. I really liked OLED calibration you showed. Colors look even more natural after calibrating with sRGB. Gaming performance of Kabylake and Pascal is more than enough to push more than 60 FPS on FHD and sub 50 FPS on QHD at High or Ultra settings. Any plans of extending the video for showing thermal performance after LM/Traditional thermal paste?
I use power plan switcher app from MS store to extend my battery runtimes on most laptops by switching off extra lights and put into Power saver mode. As always, ThrottleStop and Che0063's battery life improvement guide helps in getting advertised battery life.

    I have one of these. 32GB RAM, 2TB 960 PRO, 1060, OLED, i7.
It doesn't come across as a "DELL" to me... and the reason being it's been dead-reliable. I've not had any issues with it (heat, thermals, battery, anything), and it's two and a half years old and going like a champ. I would have rather had something of this thickness with the RTX 2060 (which would have been awesome) than have something like the m15 R2 where even the RAM is soldered to the mainboard. Unfortunately, with the "ultrabook" craze in full-swing, things like key-travel (13 R3 = excellent), upgradeability (RAM = 32GB, which is more than m15 R2 @ 16GB max), are going to be sacrificed to say "i'm a gaming macbook!".
I never thought I'd say this, but when my 13 R3 finally goes, I'll genuinely be sad. It's an absolutely amazing laptop for everything from going to Starbucks, to gaming, to video watching, to well... just about anything.

Best laptop I’ve ever owned. Just sad that hardware moves on forcing me to sell.
On to an aw15 r4 with 1070. That’s how impressed I was with the 13. But the 15 is a tad too big and heavy.m for what it is. But the next closest thing and coincidentally designed similar to the Alienware is the y740 which I’m all for as it’s smaller than the aw15 even tho they both 15”

The two choices you gave yourself here are for two different preferences.
240hz panels are too niche and 144 will suite the majority instead. Unless it’s producing even better color gamut.

They’re two very different laptops. The OP will offer better gaming experience hands down. FHD, high refresh rate and good colors.

Hi BoB. Nice to see u reviewing an AW notebook.I ll share my oponion about this laptop as i had it just non led model with 7300hq and 1050.For me speakers are really great on this machine.Laptop is small but still heavy.Chasis is nice built , i didnt had any problem with thermals on this machine but my gpu was bottlnecked on 60-70% bcs of HD resolution in most games it did not maxed out gpu usage. In hitman 2016 i got fps drop to 27 on some places i think bcs of CPU...AC:Origins also below 40.Which problem i encountered with that notebook ? I got it with 130w psu brick so cpu could not get enough juice and could not turbo boost ,even web browsing was lagging) then i bought 180w dell ac adapter and problem was sloved. It is good notebook for multimedia and light gaming users. To be honest 13inch is good for all but not for gaming. And one question for u BoB i think when you turn off CPU performance mode in Bios your cpu wont turbo boost ? I turned it off and cpu didnt turbo boosted anymore or i missing something?

Funny watching this now and knowing that in the current Alienware models the thermals are a massive issue with most people getting cookers .Without undervolting and re-pasting the new models are waaaay too hot. Guess RTX was / is too much even in Max Q for the current size / Thickness of notebooks. They all overheat. With a re-paste and re-pad and underolt the 13 R3 doesn't break past 80 degrees under full load stress on either chip with averages gaming at 2K or 1080p on GPU around 75 and CPU the same. Impressive for the form and a full fat 1060. So yes to the title question. Nothing has come since that betters this great little machine.
