My Dad, who I had lived with and cared for, for 14 years, passed away a few weeks ago. In his last years, a bevy of TH-cam creators gave him a larger view to the outside world, showing lives akin to his own, and also lives he could have led, but chose other paths. He saw images of his homeland, rode along with pilots, narrowboat, bus, train and truck drivers, watched as an old ship was painstakingly brought back to life, laughed as the King's Guard horses got narky. Dad would often fall asleep watching the content you all created, listening to the voices of people who had become like friends. In his final days, when he was restless and unable to sleep, or was afraid to sleep, he asked for you all. Dad had family with him at all times, but he also found comfort in hearing the activites and voices of the people who had kept him company throughout the years, he shared with us your stories, and was able to rest. I hope knowing that you had a positive impact on someone's life, in a far away place, uplifts you. Thank you 🙏
Brought back memories. I'm 75yo and hard aground now but way back in the 60's I and the rest of the family camped for 6 weeks on Lizard. It wasn't boring for us back then; the Island has quite a history attached to it. It's where Cook spotted a way out of the Barrier Reef by climbing to the top of the highest hill to spot Cook's Passage. We did the same. There's also a tragic story about a woman and daughter who died in a water tank while attempting to escape from the Island - ask about the story of Mrs. Watson. The Island was uninhabited when we were there. Now it's a resort and research station. Boring? Not for us at all. On a dinghy trip around the island we counted 24 large sharks in an afternoon, got attacked by 2 and saw a UFO to top it off !
When the boonie hat flop´s up you actually look like a proper pirate. And to me you not only look like one. You are a proper hero-pirate. I admire you doing all this single-handed. Keep it up Barry and thanx for sharing this awesome freedom with us all.
Blimey it's been so long I put a plaque up for you on the "lost at sea" memorial at the Portsmouth harbour entrance. Even left a bunch of flowers I stole from the plaque just up a bit. Good to know you are still bobbing around on a tide somewhere. 😊😊😊
Hi Barry, nice to see you again mate😊. Its been a while Everytime I think Im getting old Im 55, dont wanna do shit like this. And then I watch you and I find myself searching ebay and buy me a sailboat and sail the world😂
I hope your foot is getting better, Barry. Whenever I have a nasty cut, I pour white vinegar or Apple Cider Vinegar on it. It really stings but it's always worked for me. Just make sure you are sitting down when you do it. Keep that cut clean.
Only now starting to understand just how much effort and hard work single handed sailing is .. I have just spent my first week sailing alone on my 40 foot Corbin around Malaysia … I am exactly your age Barry and it was HARD .. how on earth do you do it … every time a problem happens there is only one person who will solve it … you are truly remarkable mate !
So I believe White Shadow is safely anchored at La Réunion. Nice to see you are OK after a more than a 6 week long Indian Ocean crossing. Welcome in France.
@davepersich3035 - I just checked Marine Traffic too - they're still showing him on Reunion, having arrived Sept. 3rd, after leaving Christmas Island July 17th. Can't wait to hear that story! (checked his position on Sept. 10th)
I know it’s a bit late now but there is an awesome lookout on that headland you rounded coming into Cooktown and the Top pub has a nice cold beer and usually a couple of news papers laying around to read and lose an arvo, love Cooktown
Last I heard Barry was about to tackle the Indian Ocean, but here he is back in Australia. With not a word of the passage. Glad he is safe and hale, but an explanation would be nice.
True, Video time Im In Australia. . . real time Im further on. These videos take time to produce and much of my time at the moment is off line deep off shore.
I think several viewers were confused, as was I, because although we know the videos are not real time, the ‘See you in a month’ on the previous video had some of us figuring (incorrectly) that the next video would be from the other side of the IO. Glad it’s all resolved and that you are safe after the crossing. Well done sir!
I'm always worried about you travelling, particularly soloing your sea journeys from across vast oceans. You embodied Cpt. Cook himself back then. Thanks for sharing your travels! Be safe!
Got really into your videos in the past I often imagine myself in your position I love the idea and romance of sailing but I get terribly sea sick unfortunately. Was thinking the other day not seen your videos in a while glad to see your back keep up the good stuff George from drizzly Cornwall.
Such memories, in 1984 I sailed from Cairns to the cape on a 50ft John Pugh ketch. I was wondering if cooks look is still on Lizard? It used to have a Tupperware container in a pile of rocks that you signed with name and vessel. Cheers mate, love your adventures.
Your anchor issue in deeper water is why I bought a boat with a variable draft . 6.5 keel down , 25 inches keel up . Nearly the same boat as a southerly 110 but better built and better rudder. You can go in with the draft set at 4 feet , if you run aground the swing keel gently moves up , and you can press a button and sail off with 3 feet of draft or less . . At sea you set it at 6.5 feet lock it down and it goes up wind well and is self saving . With the keel; all the way up she can still take a knockdown to 140 degrees and come back up . All 13 hatches above the flood line in a knock down and the center cockpit can not hold enough water to compromise stability . The compromise is the cockpit is small , but the "back porch" on a center cockpit makes up for it as well as the flush huge fordeck of nearly 15 feet . 13 opening hatches including an opening windshield means a decent ventilation inside . PO added a sugar scoop on the stern that is fantastic for getting on and off or swimming and stores the dingy and propane tanks . Nothing is perfect the keel lift mechanism is in the way of the table , although there is a mod that fixes it I won't do . What is there is simple and robust. The keel/ ballast is 5700 lbs so the hydraulics to lift it matter . Part is encapsulated in the hull so not sure exactly what the keel weight. There are two manual back ups but in the worst case it just turns into a boat with a normal keel although I can not imagine both back ups failing given there are 3 ways to lift the keel . Also it is a wet head , meaning the head is also the shower. Boat is small by today's standards at 35 feet , plus the sugar scoop but that means easy to handle and cheaper to run , aft cabin so lots of room . Considered a true blue water boat . There are two main private cabins , one with a queen bed and one with bunk beds Also a pilot house boat for those crappy conditions or you can drive while watching dinner cook .Panoramic view forward on the galley . Has a wet hanging locker Not a race boat but way faster than Shaddy and goes to weather way better . PHRF of about 153 for those that follow performance handicap rating . Everything is tabbed in including the entire hull to deck joint - even the galley and hanging lockers . Currently getting a refit , new 120 wiring , new chargers , new breaker panel , fridge redone , new lights , new instruments and more .
Quick check of your last position 📡 on my b'day (9/3), shows you in Le Port, Reunion Island.... good onya! Them's dangerous waters, Cap'n....fair winds and following seas!!
Great to see the crossing went well hope to see some videos on that too, Barry hope the love you’re looking for wasn’t in the cook museum! You like the small islands maybe she’s on one! Great to have you back and I couldn’t help but think of that line “ cut my heel and had to cruise back home” living the life sea dog! Have fun stay safe stay cool safe seas.
After the last video I wasn’t expecting to hear from you so soon. But obviously you will make some Australia stops before you really hit the wide ocean
Onwards and upwards. I've been trying for some time to figure out why you have the boom sheeted in somewhat when you're running before the wind. Looking at your novel preventer attached to the reefing point, got me noticing those running backstays. Now I understand. Kind of...
Good too see you back Barry and I'm always enjoy the video's you make. Wish you all the best with you're bloody feet and hope it's heeling fast. Greetings from the North-east off the Netherlands.
Hi Barry, I have the same furler and had the same problem with jaming , May I suggest cut out the splice and re do it with a more slender taper . Safe passage
Ahoy,... wife Julie always gets a kick out if it when Barry wears the "Drink Rum" T shirt she designed and sent him a while back. Tickles her fancy every time :)
Strange trip, didn't realise that the Indian Ocean is in between Cairns and Cooktown.Your audience needs to check their geography with some of there comments. Glad you made the 2day trip in a month.Avid watcher

Great video, I really enjoyed. One day I might make the passage from the Philippines!
Fantastico Barry! Congratulations on your epic crossing of the Indian Ocean too! Love Malcolm and Eileen xx
I loved how you allowed us to explore the history of the area at the same time as the area itself, very awesome content!
Great place for Cook to land...cold beer and good food.

Good job son !
Glad to see you in good health.
Learned a bit about Cooktown and Cape York Peninsular from Bush Tucker Man back in the early 80's - miles of empty beaches, what's not to like?
Great to sea you!!! About that preventer… I don’t know… what could possibly go wrong, right??? Anyway, you know what you’re doing 😅
Perfect blend of history, yarns and beer.
Was watching an older video when this popped up ❤ Thnx Barry

A little of everthing. Blood, sweat, tears.
When you finally get to that bar on shore you may find the $25 to get into the museum wasn't that bad, Lizard Island is not a cheap stop.
Well done mate
