Cutting the anchor free was called slipping the cable. In old sailing ships it was done often, but a float was attached so the ship could return and pick up its anchor after the danger had passed. Keep an old fender in your chain locker.
Proper working shoes are mandatory in most boat yards nowdays , i know it is hot and humid in Bundy ..but small accident happen so quicky , same with gloves , best to wears them even around anchor chain ,and anywork with grinder or hammer , ect ..all the best in your recovery .
That leg reminded me of when I ended up in hospital in Mount Isa. NW Queensland. I was working in one of the mines there. I nicked the front of my leg on, of all things, a piece of cardboard. Infection set in and before I knew it I was in hospital with my legs elevated and on a continuous antibiotic drip in one arm and a shunt in the other through which I had a two hourly antibiotic shot as well. A surgeon said to me, ‘welcome to the amputation capital of Australia, you were within a couple of hours of us taking both your legs off at the knee’! There were six of us in this hospital room, five with freshly amputated legs! Made me very aware of what could have happened! I was in there for six days and I’ve had recurring problems ever since! That was over fourteen years ago! The tropics can be a dangerous place to get an infection.
I don't keep up with Barry's "real-time" platforms, but the AIS shows White Shadow in a marina in Darwin for the the last approx. 3 months. The marina is not far from a major airport. Speculating here that Barry done took a trip somewhere. Again, I don't follow his real time platforms. 😎 Had to come back and comment on his "out-of-water" bilge, full of water, "out of water." 😂
13:00 Instead of filler... swap the pan head bolts out with flat heads & finish washers, thru-bolted. Or flat head self tappers, finish washers & some 5200 to seal it up & help hold them in place.
One of the boaters left his boat in NZ and went back to the States SDiego and came back to that and much more. He discovered that so much water had infiltrated via the deck that the deck was now soft ! Plus, it nearly wrecked a radio ect. Expensive HF. Lots of rain there and that year they even had a Typhoon !
Steel boats = constant maintenance battling the never ending fight with rust, it takes a special kind of person to buy a steel boat, I think the word is masochist. Always on the hard, absolute nightmare
When you spend the whole night getting bashed up onto a reef and as the sun comes up on the high tide you pop upright into the lagoon, hoist your sails and sail away, you thank your steel boat.
@Antipodean33 if you have a something, of what material ever, you will have to maintain it; in it's special way the something requires.. you got well maintained steelboats from 100 + years as well as wooden ones. Just saying ;)
My dad was a over the road truck driver. He ran from the midwest to California and back every week.. in the early 90s he was in southern California and fell asleep, had the windows down. Woke up threw on his clothes and then threw on his footwear.. turned out that a brown recluse spider had found his shoe quite a lovely place to stay. It of course bit him, he never did see the spider but he got home 3 days later and his foot was the size of yours and it was weird colors.. luckily he didn't loose the foot but after that he always stuck a clean rag in his shoes and tipped them upside down and smacked him to make sure nothing was in there
Hi, Before you fit the new sounder, check what mastic you should use. Plastics can be affected by using the incorrect mastic. The supplier should know,
I totally agree with you about needing a Scag in front of or under a rudder. The only thing I don't like about that very long skeg is that it needs to have one more vertical support in front of the rudder just for strength without depending on the rudder for that strength.
Great to see you again, Barry! I like your yard period video's. I always learn something by watching and listening to you take on those projects. Take it slow by easy now. Looking forward to next episode. 🍻
Yes Barry, that is an older Hallberg Rassy, and you are so right. It's the one you should have bought from the start, so you wouldn't have had to constantly hunt for rust. 🇸🇪💕😄😀❤
A really interesting episode, thank you! Thanks a lot, too, for the tip with the carabiner as the ultimate safety precaution at the end of the anchor chain.
Since you like a 3/4 fin keel and a full strut supporting the rudder you would like the underbody design of the Pacific Seacraft 34 that I have, identical in design to the 31 and the 37. By the way, when Bob Perry was designing the ultimate carbon fiber 60 ft cruiser he added a strut like that one boat that stretches from the back of the keel to the rudder strut, and called it a chastity strut, because without it you are f.
Always something we don’t expect. I just got something I don’t wish on anyone but I’m going to fight like hell. And I pray for your quick healing. On the brighter side you being British, I’m going to brag a little. My second granddaughter 6 month old was featured in the British Vogue December issue. And we live in Toronto Canada. We were just chucked. Take care Barry all the best lad.
Thought you might be more enthusiastic about the Garcia 45 Exploration. They have a 52 and just launched a 60 version. Put your best foot forward and get well soon.
Ok - Orcas (off Spain) don't care what type of rudder you have. They have disabled full keelers as well as spade. Also talk to any yacht designer about hull windows - the bonding between the window and hull is usually stronger than the hull itself. If you lose one you have bigger problems. You should have gone for a Najad or maybe a moody. More efficiency so less miles at sea, less maintenance so you have more beer time. But hindsight is easy.
Have you tried a hand held sandblasting gun, works pretty well for small areas! A little Ospho, some high zinc primer, paint and go:) New engine, a bikini clad Mrs. Barry and you'd really be ready for the next leg of your journey:)
Always carry a big bottleb of Betadine for those cuts and scratches and apply immediately to stop getting nasty infections in tropics lost a friend who left it too late to get an infection seen to on his leg take care
Wow hope your foot/ leg healed up okay. Melioidosis bacteria? Emergency release of your anchor cable/chain. In the Australian navy they use what's known as a Blake slip also known as a Senhouse slip to secure the anchors when at sea, it is used to slip the anchor not in the cable/chain locker but may be a good option theyre solid and only require the removal of mauzing wire securing a pin then tap out the pin then a hit with a hammer. Or the above in conjunction with a lugged joining shackle. Easy to flood a bilge on a ship when up on the hard, fresh water and fire main systems are still charged. Cheers
Hemma/Major Tom is a Najad. I do have one myself😊 The one you think is a Najad, the one with red bottom, is actually a Hellberg Rassy. Take care. BR from Sweden (where Major Tom are from)
Hi Barry hope the foot gets better . Taku Tori was sailed by my uncle Bill Tait from the east coast of the USA to Australia and sold her there in Bundaberg , sad to see her looking like that now
Bloody hell, had heard you had had leg problems and looking forward to, and dreading, the next episode. Hopefully you're back on your pegs again. The boatyard trip had some lovely and tragic craft, and intrigued by future full-keel adventures. Thank you for another excellent video.
Barry , when you paint the bottom,,, put chyanne pepper 🌶 in your bottom paint ,, will keep anything wanting to attach to it,, I had a 40ft tri hull and tryed it 3 years an nothing on bottom, only on prop and shaft,, hope it will help ,,,,don't be shy on the chyanne !!
@@SayWhut276 im not sure you are up to speed on this. In 2020 Orcas started attacking sailing boats off NW Spain and this behaviour has spread to the Gibraltar straits. Dozens of boats have suffered damage from attacks and several have been sunk.
In the nicest way possible Barry - I hope you don't come back to the UK / The West anytime soon!!! I know you had a horrific experience in the Pacific - but please for God sake endure some Pacific woes for at least the next 2 years - home really isn't worth coming to at the moment!!!
Note: I'm sure others would agree! Don't come back unless you intend of getting yourself Afghani citizenship and approaching the UK in "Rubber Dhingy Rapids Bro!!!" With the whole Middle East scenario you may well be better heading back via the North Pacific..... No doubt A Stomach churning proposition BUT far better than the alternatives!!!
Lol, no different in the USA.Getting a sailboat and being in the ocean is truly the safest place to be currently, I envy sailors but do have the dough to be one now.
You should use proper sandals instead of those flipfloppers you have ( yes they are cheap but not good in the long run). Ptiy though its so long distance otherwise Id coming by and Cheered you up with some cans of beers. Hope everything goes well with your foot. Cheers. 👍

yep walking around in that gravel in flip flops, accident waiting to happen
Work fascinates me, I can watch it all day.
Your idea with the cut away on the chain is a tip I will employ. Thank you as always
Love the song.
I Love Seeing You Do Magic With Shaddy, I Feel For You And Your Foot And Leg Problem, Prayers For Absolute Healing Barry 💯💯❤❤🙏🙏

You can easily beach Garcia exploration . Her ruddera are designed for this. It's a beautiful boat, Jimmy Cornell did a good job on it.
Love boat repair videos. Keep it up!
The Hemma boat has the KSSS logo (Swedish sailing association, or something to that effect), and Hemma means "Home" or "At home" basicly =)
Royal Swedish Yacht Club
With a Swedish name and the red stripe I assume it's a Najad.
SSS = Stockholms Segelsällskap.
I also enjoy walking around boatyards and seeing the variety of vessels on the hard.
Oh noooo, what a cliffhanger! Hope your foot and leg are getting healed fast. All the best to you, Barry!
Damn Barry, that foot sent chills through me.Since you teased, there will be a next video.I'll assume you're still alive!😮

Shazam Barry... always something happening to you not the best... I'll be here when you return... on the edge of my seat now... Fair Winds...
Always a great show Barry .Maintenance and repairs are important .Just the same as owing a house .I think your life is a better one .
Wow you have some challenges ahead!
Phosphoric acid is crap, I sometimes use it as a prep, but after, use tannic acid.

Yikes the old Sea Dog's dogs looked pretty scary! Another great video Barry. Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
Great video Barry....... Thanks
You old planner breaking down in hometown of Bundeberg rum!
Good to see the bitter end 👍
Good one 😜
Thank you for sharing your life with us you got us addicted to sailing videos stay safe Barry!!
I'll make sure I watch your next episode when I'm not eating my lunch.
Hemma means home in Swedish. There was a Royal Swedish sailing club sticker at the bow.

I didn't realise they were quite that bad. Damn...
@@leecudmore-ray6697 Maybe but at least a wooden boat is beautiful

Loved the Boatyard Tour. Great anchor chain tip, too. You are a genuine sea rock star. Very Good video, again.
that garcia has twin rudders to stabilize it when you dry it out. it can take the weight, very imporessive boats.

God knows why you chose Bundaberg to haul out and spend time.Absolutely baffling!
Sad looking foot Barry 😰. Anyway, the fight against rust seems endless. I definitely will never buy a steel boat 😉
Yes,and in UK now many boat yards dont allow grinding ect.Have to build an expensive tent over it…..
Oh! Steel boats! Never a dull moment!
" Hemma" is the Swedish word for home
Thank you for taking us along
Thoroughly enjoyed that video Barry 😊 … great tip about the anchor chain 👍
Thank you Barry...

I love boat yards!
Thankyou of explaining all that u saw
All the best to you as you continue to care for your foot!!!
Good luck for the foot mate! 🤞
We all have boat envy.......
I bet that expedition yacht needs the bow thruster with that extended forefoot.
If bow thrusters are cheating, so are engines. And fibreglass.
Barry, time to re-zinc that chain. Get it re-galvanized. Hey, you replaced that depth sounder back in Kiwi-land (didn't you?).
No worries, Rolling Stone also does a fine job of bilge flood in the rain, on land or sea...
I agree the best boat in the yard is the one that took you more than half way around the world. The White Shadow of Poole better than all of them.
Oops . That did not look good. Hope for your speedy recovery Barry. Best regards from Jarle
The Orca rudder fixation is a real problem i think if i was having a boat built id have the rudder framed and protected
