Thank you!! Washing machine is working again!! My mom's washing machine would do nothing after filling with water -- no agitation, no spin. I followed your video. I checked both connectors (lid switch & bottom main) & they looked good. Nothing appeared rusted or discolored. So I just disconnected and reconnected them to make sure nothing was loose. I followed the wires and tried to tighten all connection points just in case it was just that something was loose. I also wrapped a zip tie around the bottom connector to secure the connection. Put it all back together, plugged it in, crossed my fingers, and it is working! Also, the machine was full of water and clothes. I was so relieved to be able to troubleshoot the machine by taking off the front cabinet. I had no idea how to drain it otherwise. And there was no way I could have moved it myself. Thank you again for this video!
This morning I didn't know anything about washing machines. This afternoon my washing machine filled with water and cut off. I went to youtube and found this video. Now I know a lot more about washing machines and saved $120. 11/10 would rename my first born son Jeff again.
You are a god send! I was about to spend $380 to replace the transmission or just buy a new washer. I tipped the washer over and gave that connector a wiggle and BOOM. My washer works again. I’ve looked all over the Internet and your video seems to be the only one with this solution. So THANK YOU!
All hail Jeff the lifesaver. This video helped me remove my inlet solenoid and clear out the screen filters after SUEZ Water NJ gifted me with a bunch of gunk in today’s water supply. You have saved me a repairman visit on this out of warranty piece of tin and plastic. Many thanks!!!
Great video. Your trick to get the washer to run while the cover if off is a great way to troubleshoot a bad lid switch. My washer filled but didn't run. I connected the two non-ground wires like you did and the washer started up. Thanks!
My switch is been acting up for a long time and finally went out. I just needed to find out how to open up the top part... and your video was very helpful thanks. I just bypassed it to avoid ever having that problem again.
I took the connector off the motor and sprayed contact cleaner in it. Now it works perfect. Thanks for the excellent video. Saved me very much time and money.
Thank you Jeff for sharing what you found. My lid switch also checked out good but I didn't give up. I searched and found your video and my machine had the exact same problem. I will bypass the arcked wire in the plug as you did on your updated fix. Thanks again!
I almost gave up on my DIY attempt when the lid switch was not the issue and I had power, but it was just dead. Love TH-cam! Thanks Jeff, mine had the same exact issue. Will look at your updated fix now.
Jeff - THANK YOU so much for publishing this. I had the same exact problem. Mine started with the failure after a supply hose had broken. After replacing the hose, the washer wouldn't agitate or cycle. I couldn't figure out why it would have a double failure. But perhaps the water caused the arcing. Your guidance took me right to the root cause. I really appreciate your post.
Thank you so much for making this video. After ruling out the switch we were back to square one. Your video was the first thing to pop up on our next search for answers. Bam. Problem solved. I am currently on my second load of wash and I didn't have to spend a dime. Thank you thank you!
Perfect! My Kenmore has the identical problem! I had played with the lid switch and pump and was about to replace the timer! You saved me big bucks! Many thanks for posting this..
Thank you! This was our washer's exact problem, and my husband was able to fix it within 30 minutes of watching this video, for free! it was the same gray wire from your follow-up video that was all burned up--in fact, ours was burnt up and broke off while we were trying to push the white clip back into place! So he forgot about rigging this and instead went straight to re-attaching the wire. Ours is an Estate by Whirlpool. Not just a Kenmore problem.
I have a Roper by Whirlpool, and had the same issue. It is a very similar design to the Kenmore. The lid switch was good, I could hear the click of the mechanism. It took me a while to find this fix. Thank you very much, it saved me alot of troubleshooting.
With your help I easily took it apart and it didnt look too bad on connection by motor. I shimmed it any way. so I tried it....nothing so I fiddled with connection on top and VOILA we were in business. I dont know if I fixed it but I know how to get it running. I can't thank you enough Jeff!
Great video Jeff! At 8:00 Sunday night we noticed our machine not spinning. Did exactly what you did, shimmed connector w/ wooden shim though. Fired right up. Running fine now. Cannot thank you enough. Took less than an hour w/ cleaning inside the unit. All was done with full load still in washer.
Absolutely fixed my problem. The wiggle test along with the jumper wire got it running again. Did some other things also like the clutch and brake assembly. Running great.
Thank you, Jeff! The other videos I watched all start with the switch, so I did that, but it didn't work. Since I had seen your video while researching the problem, I thought, "I wonder if that is my problem." Sure enough, my connector looked just like yours and the problem was fixed with a couple of small shims. Sure appreciate you taking the time to make the video!
Thanks a million! I was looking for a video on a Kenmore 500 to figure out how to get the top off and access the back of the machine to replace a water intake value. Saw some other repair videos with different methods for different machines, but just wasn't confident or didn't know the putty knife would be what would work on the Kenmore 500 and didn't want to break anything. You save me a lot of grief.
Just fixed my Kenmore 400, same problem. Wedged a piece of a plastic gift card. Bam works like a champ again Thanks for taking the time to post this video
Thank you, that was the exact fix none of the other videos addressed. I found that a balance spring came undone and the imbalance caused a disconnect at that plug.
My dad was a Sears tech for like 30 years, back when repairs were a thing instead of trying to sell customers replacement machines. Been having problems with our older Kenmore but most the hardware looks the same-just different style knobs...i'm gonna see if i can fix the problem and earn his respect/blow his mind...cuz this seems congruent with the symptoms. Gonna disconnect the power supply 1st before dinking with stuff though, LOL! Also...old washers and dryers loaded with various metal, plastic, aluminum cans, ceramics, clay, concrete & dirt are a great way of adding armor to the walls of your home during the coming global economic collapse, beware the hordes of desperate 'zombies' that may try to invade your place of residence...and making it more heat/cooling efficient too! Edit: i forgot to edit it better
Hi! Thank you very much for making this video! I was lucky it was just the lid sensor, couldn’t have fixed without your video as I have never worked on a washer before!!!
I cannot thank you enough for posting this! This absolutely fixed my Whirlpool washer (I was about to buy a new motor before I stumbled upon your vid).
Thank you very much Jeff! From your excellent video I was able to diagnose and fix the same problem with my washer. I appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge. 👍
If you remove the switch from the frame, plug it in and clamp the ground to the frame you can bypass all the wiring stuff. Thank you for your video, saved me a bunch of money. 👍👍👍👍
AMAZING !!!! the lid switch went on mine ! , I wouldn't have known where to start before you showed us how to take the top panel off . Thanks, 5 minutes fix !
Thank you so much for this video. I was having the same problem. The bottom red wire had broken off from the connector lead. I wound up splicing it to a piece of solid copper wire and then inserting the solid wire into the harness. Not the best solution, but so far so good. I may have to go back and tweak if the solid wire works loose. Thanks!
This is exactly what was wrong with my washer. Thank you for saving me about $700. I am going to find/order a new wiring harness for the washer, or at very least replace the plug to the motor switch, or just remove it and crimp some connectors that fit. something a bit safer than wedging something on the side of the plug to make it arc less.
I made a followup video where I cut the offending wire from both sides of the connector and soldered a connector to it so you don't lose the functionality of disconnecting it. This video has more hits and youtube puts it higher in the search results so everyone sees it first.
Great video. It help me. I just didn’t have what you use to make it work with cabinet removed, I simply remove the other part and connect it make sure I got ground with the green cable and just pull the trigger to see if that was the problem and it did work.
Thank you Jeff! Mystery Solved. I wonder how many good motors and other parts have been unnecessarily replaced to solve this problem. 1 thing I can add here is: you and others have been left with a less than ideal motor wiring harness connector. I've had good results using Hot Melt glue to keep connectors together with good positioning. If done right, connectors can still be easily taken apart again by cutting the glue w/ a razor, sharp utility knife etc.
Awesome video. Was ready to go buy a new washer. I used your hint using the clip, but used it on the lid sensor. It was not engaging and your trick worked! You made it easy to remove the top cover.
I could kiss you man, same thing JUST NOW happened to me and your video popped up on search. I was going to replace the switch until I saw this and I just checked at while mine isn't burnt I have the same problem with the connector. Thanks!
Great helper video, maybe a little on the risky side. Never leave a bare clip as a temporary fix. They do make liquid tape to paint over bare wires and connections. If you’re going to Mickey Mouse ( which is required at times), do it safely.
This must be the problem with our machine. Have not had it long, but no warrenty. It would fill with water but not drain or spin or agitate. Then after a week or two and my husband lifting the unit and tilting it to access the belt inside, he figured he would try running it and it worked again. I will be honest that I am afraid to try running a load. Been doing laundry the last two weeks at our in laws and in the barn. Hated wringing out that load it quit on me and hand bailing the water out.
Thank u very much homie !!!!!! I cut the door switch wire ! Check the capacitor The pump And found you're video !!!! Imma buy u lunch if I ever see u buddy !!!
yea my kenmore elite does the same fills with water then no agitation, no wash, no rinse, spin and drain. i don't know if its the lid switch yet haven't open up the washing machine , still trying to get more information to help .
How damn silly 🤣. . I replaced my dad's clutch, and was like "How in the actual hell is the motor not working now?!🤷🏼♂️" Im glad it was easy though - Thank you
I have same issue - Washer stops after waterfilling but this wire is ok and it did not fix my problem - I changed the timer unit too - anyother clue/suggestions ?
cannot imagine doing all this tweaking with the power on and water in the tub??? please explain how to take precautions if this is necessary. thanx for great vid
Just had the same symptoms on a Whirlpool washer. After sliding the control panel back **********DONT TRY TO POP UP***** Its secured behind with two 1/4 sheet metal screws and two phillips head screws. When you remove these, push about 1/2 inch toward front and lift up, lean forward. No mine was bad shade tree work. Someone had replaced the door switch and put scotch tape on the 3 wires they tied into. One wire was grounding out, shorting the circuit. Cleaned off the crap tape, wire nuts with black tape to prevent vibration. done deal
I think I have the same issue but my washer will fill with water but then when it starts to run, it will trip the breaker so i'm going to take it apart and i will let you know what i find.
I have the same problem. My connector wasn't burned, but the wire was toast! I touched it and it broke away from the contact. Do we know what causes this? I'm wondering if replacing the wire will do or if there's a bigger problem here.

This was my problem, amazing how you can find these simple fixes on youtube. Thanks for the video
I just want to say thank you so much. You saved us upwards of $800. My husband and I are so relieved!
I almost gave up on my DIY attempt when the lid switch was not the issue and I had power, but it was just dead. Love TH-cam! Thanks Jeff, mine had the same exact issue. Will look at your updated fix now.

Just fixed my Kenmore 400, same problem. Wedged a piece of a plastic gift card. Bam works like a champ again
Thanks for taking the time to post this video

I cannot thank you enough for posting this! This absolutely fixed my Whirlpool washer (I was about to buy a new motor before I stumbled upon your vid).
Just followed this video (getting top panel off was slightly different), but fixed my washing machine for free. Thank you!!!
Thanks! Just fixed my washer for free by watching your video! Thanks so much!

My washing machine stops draining as well, I planned to replace the drainage pump, now I'll check if some other parts malfuntion as you did
Thank you so much for this video. I was having the same problem. The bottom red wire had broken off from the connector lead. You the man, exact same problem exact same fix. The thing that took the longest was figuring out how those damn clips went back on haha
Many have said it, but THANK YOU. This video saved me. Made my week.
Thank you so much! I had this identical issue with the plug. I was so dreading having to empty a full tub of water but this was a quick easy fix.
Fantastic video. Just fixed my Kenmore 90 series. Same exact problem. Thanks for posting this!!
Great video. It help me. I just didn’t have what you use to make it work with cabinet removed, I simply remove the other part and connect it make sure I got ground with the green cable and just pull the trigger to see if that was the problem and it did work.
Thank you! This was the exact problem with my washer, and I fixed it in less than 30 minutes.
Dude! you nailed this one, thanks for saving me time and money. BTW it works for Maytag too.
Just fixed my washer, it had the same problem, thank youuu! Great video!!
Same problem! Thanks for the video thankfully I only blew 200 bucks on the timer and not another 200 for the motor 😊
Thank you Jeff!
Mystery Solved.

Thank you you helped me find out what’s wrong with my washing machine💖💖💖
this worked for mine. everyone was saying it was the lid switch but mine was already bypassed. it was the fourth one from the bottom. thanks!
Awesome video. Was ready to go buy a new washer. I used your hint using the clip, but used it on the lid sensor. It was not engaging and your trick worked! You made it easy to remove the top cover.
Thanks, It was the same problem with mine. Not burned as bad as yours. Just cleaned it and stuck it back together. It works. Thanks again...
Thank you so much. This video helped me out so much and you were so detailed and explained everything
I could kiss you man, same thing JUST NOW happened to me and your video popped up on search. I was going to replace the switch until I saw this and I just checked at while mine isn't burnt I have the same problem with the connector. Thanks!
Just did this, perfect solution!!!! Finally a video that helps.
nice work dude, you're a beast!! I'm proud of you sooper sleuth. On my way to work on mine.
Thank you!! I was able to fix mine after weeks of trying everything.
Just tried this and so far so good. Thanks.
Very informative video
Thanks for sharing.
You are amazing! Just did the fix and it worked like a charm!
Nice video ! Thanks...........................Bob in Grand Rapids MI
Great helper video, maybe a little on the risky side. Never leave a bare clip as a temporary fix. They do make liquid tape to paint over bare wires and connections. If you’re going to Mickey Mouse ( which is required at times), do it safely.
Thanks to you I fixed my washer same problem
This has been a blessing. Saved me $$$$. Thank you. Subbed.
First thing you should do is - unplug any electrically powered appliance before working on it! Be careful.
I agree especially if new to this type work.
thank you jeff. that was very helpful. you saved me $500.
And me also!! Exactly my issue! Thank you sir!!!❤️

THANKS GUY, mine was the lid switch.
Excellant video......problem solved ....Thank you for this
yea my kenmore elite does the same fills with water then no agitation, no wash, no rinse, spin and drain. i don't know if its the lid switch yet haven't open up the washing machine , still trying to get more information to help .
How damn silly 🤣.

I replaced my dad's clutch, and was like
"How in the actual hell is the motor not working now?!🤷🏼♂️"
Im glad it was easy though - Thank you
great video! thanks Jeff.
I have same issue - Washer stops after waterfilling but this wire is ok and it did not fix my problem - I changed the timer unit too - anyother clue/suggestions ?
This is exactly what I needed.
Thank you!
Thank you so much! You saved me time and money!
This fixed the problem. Thank you!
Just fixed mine this way!! Thank you so much!
thanks for video. not sure what the disposition will end up being for me but wouldn't have been able to take it apart with this.
cannot imagine doing all this tweaking with the power on and water in the tub??? please explain how to take precautions if this is necessary. thanx for great vid
Thanks man. This really helped. Love love love TH-cam.
saved my night! thanks!
My Kenmore elite top load keeps turning off. How would I figure out what’s wrong
You saved the day man. Worked for me too!
Great video. Just fixed mine
Mind doing the same thing but that was not the problem i need more help please
I think I have the same issue but my washer will fill with water but then when it starts to run, it will trip the breaker so i'm going to take it apart and i will let you know what i find.
I had the same problem, thank you for the video
thanks I had same issue. washer works again
I have the same problem. My connector wasn't burned, but the wire was toast! I touched it and it broke away from the contact. Do we know what causes this? I'm wondering if replacing the wire will do or if there's a bigger problem here.
Jennifer Starr I don't know for sure what burns the connector but my theory is the connection isn't very good or there is a short distance between 2 pieces of the connector and that the electricity has to jump from one to the other which is called arcing. The arcing generates substantial heat, enough to burn and melt the connector. In regards to your wire, it sounds like at this point you will have to replace it since it broke but that won't fix the root cause of the problem which is the arcing. My attempt to fix the arcing is by physically pushing the contacts closer together and hopefully eliminating the arcing. It seems to be a design flaw so even replacing the connector doesn't seem to fix the problem. It's a poorly designed connector.
It work for me too.
Thanks a Million
Thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you. Thorough. Helpful
THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!! You save me from buying a new washer! My wife is so happy about it, I’m getting laid tonight. Lol
Glad I could assist with your love life.
