I never imagine you could do double round ribbing 2x2, and I like to use this kind of CO to knit the sock's cuff; now I don't have to do always a 1x1 rib! Thank you!

I am new to knitting. I have been seeing and trying different method that I have seen on you tube. The only one that gives consistent results is yours. It is stable and easy to follow. The italian cast on… was a disaster… for a beginner.

I just made a hat with a tubular CO, and your video has two improved techniques: First, your provisional CO looks so much faster than making a crochet chain and then picking up stitches from the chain. And, yours is jogless. I'm about to start another hat and I'm very excited about applying these tips!
This and the 1x1 ribbing video were extremely clear and helpful, and I compared several other videos before practicing. I will settle for this method for all future rib cast-ons, without doubt, after having made three small swatches.

Ingenious! It is the same as 1x1 ribbing until approx 11:00 in the video and then decide if you want to do 1x1 or 2x2 ribbing (but Suzanne would always swatch first :-)

I do this method but flat, then join. I’ve experimented with 2 set up rows and 4. On my machine it do 2, then start ribbing right away. By hand I do 4. I use smaller needles to keep the edge from flairing. It’s a lot of work, but worth it. The y/o into 1/2 number of cast on creates the best most stable non flairing edge.

Thanks for these clear instructions Suzanne! The pattern I'm about to knit starts with a turtleneck, in the round, in twisted rib. The instructions say K1 tbl, P1 tbl on every row. I assume that's so the fabric is reversible when the turtleneck is folded over. I'm going to follow your instructions and add the twists to my stitches. Hoping it'll work out, but I trust your directions!

I love the video. I'm a little confused with round one and round two ? Round one is working the needle in the front. Is round two the other side of the round one, which is opposite of what was done on round one? So if you put them up together the knits will match the knits from one side of the cuff to the other side of the cuff? Thank you

This is not working for me at all. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've followed the instructions to a T three times now and I end up with a neck that's four times the size I need it. Something happens with the provisional caston that makes it stretch out!

Why is it that we do 2 rows of the knit slip then slip purl instead of just one (or rather, go around 4 times instead of 2, I know the language is confusing for this!)?
If you did not do the rows of double knitting (the slipping part) the structure would be very soft and would not hold its shape. Without the double knitting it is a cast on used for brioche and double knitting and is called Italian cast on. With the double knitting you can use it for ribbing, either 1x1 or 2x2. I don't understand how many pair of needles do you use?
I use two circular needles - each 24 inches long. You can also use magic loop or dpns, it is personal preference. Happy Holidays.

I'm probably missing something, but It was not clear at all what has she done with the sts after dividing them into 2 needles? From where did she start? And why every video on this topic assumes every knitter is a crocheter as well? I can buy a crochet needle, but the crochet part is always rushed on those videos.

Are the results the same as flat tubular cast on? Where you Join in the round after the 4th row knit flat.
Yes. There are several ways to achieve the same results. This is my favorite. Easiest for working in the round, in my opinion. Happy Holidays.

It is more stretchy than a long tail cast on. Works great for socks and hats. You might want to work a sample first to check it out for yourself.

Hi Suzanne, is there a chanel in there for elastic or cord to be inserted. This looks gorgeous for socks or a normal collar but I need something I can put a cord in at the moment. Thanks!

Yes, there is a channel, that is why it is called a tubular bind off.
So, now you have learned the difference between the Italian BO and Tubular BO. The difference is that in the Tubular, there is that tube created by the slipped stitches set up rounds. It is also very sturdy. The part of the bind off where you are threading the tapestry needle through the stitches is the Italian BO, which can be done by itself, without the slipped stitch rounds. It also looks nice, but there is no tube, and it is less durable.
@@SuzanneBryan well I havent exactly learnt the difference except one creates a tube and one doesnt. Ive never done the italian one. Today Im making my own pattern for a peasant top. A nd am very happ y this works for as many rows as you like. You get twice the number of stit ch es after the tube is finished with which is nice because I dont have to make any increases for my pattern :). Were very lucky to have you showing us everything . I really appreciate you :)

Hi Suzanne: If you were knitting flat tubular cast on, would you knit 4 setup rows? I've watched all the videos on knitting this type of cast on in flat knitting and the video shows knitting only 2 setup rows.
What a great question. Make two swatches and try it with the 4 passes vs 2 passes and see what you think. Which do you like best? Then that is what you should do.
@@SuzanneBryan I just tested knitting 6 setup rows and it looks great! So, 4 rows would look good too. Another thing I don't understand: There are lots of videos called tubular bind off for flat knitting (a sewn bind off for ribbing) and they show no setup rows before cutting the yarn. How can this bind off be called tubular, when no tube is knitted before binding off?
My sentiments exactly. they are not tubular.
Do you use the same size needle for the caston as the rest of the mitt? Does this cast on tend to flare after wearing the mitts?
It is more stretchy than long tail cast on. great for hats and socks. Try it on a swatch and see what you think.
It depends on the knitter. I do not change to a smaller needle. Some people do. I have found that if I am working with wool, that if I steam or wet block the ribbing prior to stretching it for the first time, (let it dry completely) that it retains the original shape.

It will work with k1p1 and k2p2, but not a mix, unfortunately. But you could always swatch and try it out.
Is there a reason you have to use 2 circulars? If knitting a hat, why not just use one 16 inch circular? Thanks.
For this size of a project ( smaller than 16"), yes, or dpns, or magic loop.
I really like this methods for some things but sometimes this cast on is too puffy.
In that case you would go down in needle size one or more sizes. Give it a try on a swatch and see what works for you.
When do you switch to the 1 set of circulars?
Hi Meg. I actually switch to circulars when the circumference is big enough. I do most of my small circumference knitting on 2 circulars, but you could also use dpns or magic loop. The directions will stay the same.
