    Thank you so much for your clear videos that don't spend 40 minutes describing what the weather was like when you first learnt the stitch and why your sister's friend's second brother-in-law was amazed at how professional it looked. You are the best knitting tutorial person on TH-cam by a MILE ❤️

    You are my number one source for knitting techniques when I am working on a project and need to learn something fast. Always straight to the point, clear and easy-to-follow steps, no complications, not overwhelming with lots of speech. I appreciate your work. Thank you.

    This method is just so clever. I am about to start a 2x2 ribbed scarf, and I will use this method to begin. Thank you for teaching us this method. I never once needed to replay the video, thinking, "Now what did she do?" It was always very clearly shown, and the large needles and yarn helped to achieve that. Much appreciated. I just subscribed.

      @@10rowsaday Thanks for your reply. Just wanted to mention this. Because of my pattern which has an even number of cast-on stitches not divisible by 4, I have come to realize that your video would be slightly different if you had cast on 14 stitches instead of 12.

    • @10rowsaday
      @10rowsaday  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good point, Cynthia. Normally you would want to cast on a number of stitches that is a multiple of the number of stitches in the pattern repeat. For 2x2 ribbing, the multiple is 4, that's why I cast on 12 stitches and not 14. If you want to make the ribbing symmetrical, it helps to add two more stitches (just like you did). In this case, you will need to make slight adjustments to the way you work the pattern. Those adjustments are fairly easy, especially when you've got the hang of the pattern. Happy knitting :-)

    Oh thank you! I had watched one other video for this, but on the last set up row, they were just pinching those 2 loops with their fingers & slipping them off the left needle & then putting them back on the needle in reverse order & I just know I that my fingers & hands aren't very capable of doing that without dropping some of the stitches. And I never even thought of slipping them by going in from the left then that replaces them in reverse order - thank you!!!

    Can this be used in the round?

    • @10rowsaday
      @10rowsaday  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure. The easiest way to do it is to make the cast on back and forth as shown in this video, and then join stitches for working in the round. When it is time to weave in ends, use the yarn tail to stitch the tiny gap at the beginning if the first round with a couple of overhand stitches before you hide this tail. Happy knitting :-)

  • @aliceeggers7150
    @aliceeggers7150 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you have to continue to k2, p2 through the back loop? The stitches are in the wrong position to regular k2, PA because working through the bl places the stitches in the wrong direction.

    • @10rowsaday
      @10rowsaday  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, Alice, once we rearrange the stitches for working in 2x2 ribbing, we continue to knit the ribbing as usual - knitting and purling stitches through the front loop. Happy knitting :-)

  • @chrbek

    I love this cast on! If you have to cast on a lot of stitches, like 100 or more, what is the best way of measuring out how much yarn you will need?

    • @10rowsaday
      @10rowsaday  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The best way to estimate the length of the tail is to cast on 10 stitches, then unravel the cast on and measure the tail. For 100 stitches, leave a tail that is 10 times longer than the tail used for 10 stitches. Happy knitting :-)

    Does this cast on has a twin cast off?

    • @10rowsaday
      @10rowsaday  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question! I'll look into it and when I find a simple way to make a matching bind off, I'll make a tutorial about it. Thank you for the suggestion :-)

  • @gillianm6843
    @gillianm6843 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In your other video about long tail tubular cast on, you discuss two ways of setting up (knitting the knits and purling the purls vs knitting the knits and slipping the purls. Here you suggest the slipped purl method as the setup for 2x2 rib. Is there a reason for this or could either setup be used?

    • @10rowsaday
      @10rowsaday  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gillian. Yes, both set ups are good. The one with two rows of slipping the purls creates an edge that holds its shape better than the way when we start working in ribbing right away. It usually looks more well-finished, but the "jump to ribbing" way is also good. In the case of 2x2 ribbing however, it is better to set up the work with two rows of slipping the purls. Otherwise, the edge could look a bit messy. Happy knitting :-)

  • @unccbassoon

    Very cool! Thank you for doing this at a pace that I could knit along with. Could you join this in the round and at what step?

    • @10rowsaday
      @10rowsaday  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, David :-) As to using this cast on for a seamless project, yes, you can join it in the round. Do it after you knit two set up rows (step 2). There will be a little gap at the place of join, but you can easily fix it with a few overhand stitches when you weave in the cast on tail. Happy knitting!

    How can I cast on for 3x3 ribbing? I’m making a vest that is all 3x3

    • @10rowsaday
      @10rowsaday  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use the method described in this tutorial to rearrange stitches for a 3x3 rib, but it could be a bit tedious. An easier solution would be to use a basic cast on method, like the long-tail cast on. These cast ons work well for all stitch patterns.

    @johanschneiders6293 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Brilliant! I think i've seen something similar to this using a cable needle, but this method is way less fiddly.

    • @10rowsaday
      @10rowsaday  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Gritter :-) You are right - you can use a cable needle to rearrange the stitches. But it is usually faster to twist the stitches, even though we have to remember to work them through the back loop afterwards.

  • @donnagoode6923

    I know there is a simpler way to cast on 2X2 ribbing because I've done it... I just don't remember how. But I definitely know I didn't do anything like this.

    • @playhooky

      I hope you did learn how to adjust the playback speed using the gear icon as she explained; my daughter had to teach me about that a few years ago when I started becoming a TH-cam watching junkie lol. I actually speed up a lot of videos when they are just people talking, but not tutorial videos.
