They recommend that you plant all mints in containers because it WILL take over your garden and kill out anything in its way.
    I love mint's.
Just plant it with caution always.

My husband and I have many Amish friends that we met back in 1997 when we worked with them on a project and have remained friends with ever since. I value our friendships very much. They have been so helpful to us over the years and in kind we have tried to be helpful to them. Your series will be very fun to follow!

I am super excited for this 31 Amish challenge Tessie. I remember touring an Amish community while on vacation one year and it was so fun. The women did spend a lot of time on their gardens and it showed. I also remember them gardening barefoot. I never understood that. Recently I learned about a study that was done on being barefoot on grass and how doing so lowered your blood pressure. This study also revealed how our blood reacted after being on dirt. It showed how the blood clumped together before and after being on the soil the clumps separated and dissipated quite a bit. I remember their quilts and how beautiful they were. Lastly I remember their quietness about them. The community we toured the women always smiled but did not engage in conversation unless they were asked a question. I am rambling. Can you tell how excited I am? This is going to be a great 31 days!

This is so much fun, Tessie! How did you know that I was just about to "harvest" at least half of my mint tea plant, which had been spending the whole winter indoors?
My daughter gave me this plant last year and it was outdoors until the weather got too cold for it to tolerate it. So I brought it in, and it really did love the indoors too... lots of new growth. Now I think it's probably time for it to go back outside, but I'd like to make a big pot of tea (probably tomorrow) first.
I had been putting mint leaves in my regular tea over the winter, but really did not have any idea how to make mint tea from scratch. Until this evening! Yay! Now I do.
So needless to say, I'm looking forward to the rest of your series.
So much of what you do is so familiar. There's some Amish/Mennonite influence near here, and my early childhood was a lot like yours. Mom stayed home, while my Dad worked away. We had a big garden. We definitely didn't have a lot of "the amenities." My mother canned and knew how to make her own bread (although she didn't always make it.)
The bottom line then, was that we "borrowed" what worked from folks who were "plainer" than we were, but we were never officially Amish/Mennonite. We sure did have a lot of respect for them, though!
This is going to be so interesting and educational while being *fun* at the same time. Thanks in advance for a fascinating series! 😀

I have enjoyed the benefits of having the Amish farmers stands to purchase produce in the summer. When I visit their produce markets and stands I always have questions for them on how to do things. They are always willing to share their experience and knowledge with us.

I started wearing skirts and dresses only last October. I was a single mom for ten year and married again 2 years ago. I had a talk with my husband and told him that I am sick of being head of household. I want him to take over this house because this not the role I'm meant to fill. I stay home now and homeschool my boys. We have a garden and chickens. My husband just put up a nice clothes line for us. We heat with wood 95 percent of the time in our house because we have no central heating. Occasionally we turn a space heater on but that's when it's really really cold out or we're low on wood. I have mint in my garden I'm picking today for tea also. I absolutely love mint tea. I grow lemon verbena also and we have a mulberry tree I'm going to make tea from this year. BTW, I used to never wear skirts or dresses. I feel so different in them and I love it. It feels right. This world is so insane right now, I just want simplicity and truth. So, I will live simplicity and truth.

Love this idea!💗 it seems the main idea of the Amish (not the religious aspect) is being plain and doing the simple things and lifestyle.🥰

I thought you were going to say the med part of name was because mint tea also helps with upset tummys. It's something I grew up drinking

I fell in love with the Amish and Mennonite cultures when I visited during the bi-centennial. As I've aged, I've come to appreciate even more the ideas and culture. Wish me luck as at age 63 I've assembled all the things needed to make and can my own jam. I've made freezer jam before but never have I canned. You are a wonderful guide thru it all as well as inspiration

Good for you! I'm your age and only learned how to can in my late 50s I was always scared I'd hurt somebody with poor canning practices. I learned to be confident in this skill by practicing! Just do it my friend! (BTW nobody's been positioned lol)

@Grandies Garden I have never learned how to cook for less than an army (did catering in HS for up too 1000) and had two boys. I'd like to make a pot of navy beans and ham, have enough for a meal and the rest can, or my stew etc. I did make some very yummy jam and lost two jars due to my "finger tight" not being tight enough. But I feel very successful. I also am drooling for my mammas green beans. So far no one dead here either. Tho they'd swear it wasn't for lack of trying! Lol

I don't know any Amish nor do I know any Mennonite people. We have them here of course. But, I find it interesting and learning about others and their cultures is something I love to do. ❤

It sounds very interesting . I’m looking forward to it. You already do a lot of that. What did you put in the tea to sweeten it? Was it honey? If so how much? I would like to try it. Have a good evening everyone!

    • @HomesteadTessie

1/2 cup of honey then Is concentrated You generally add half water to half the concentrate unless you stronger than you adjust the water accordingly

    • @HomesteadTessie
      @HomesteadTessie  ปีที่แล้ว +3

so 1 quart of the Tea concentrate took a half a cup of the honey

This is going to be so much fun I love learning about different cultures. I’ve always been interested in the Amish and Mennonites not the religious part but I love the way that they pull together to help each other. I don’t want to live without electricity and I do not want to wash clothes out by hand but I do love to watch the cooking parts in the garden parts. Much love prayers and hugs 🤗🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

I loveee the Amish lifestyle … so God directed us to a far away land in the middle of nowhere Missouri but we are right. BY the Amish and didn’t realize that when we moved we were just being directed by God..so awesome now I can be woven in with them in a very special way. God is so good xoxox
