Tessie I Need HELP!! I had a great recipe called 7 Layer Casserole from an Amish cookbook I used to have. I used to make it for my dad before he passed back in 1995. I bought the recipe book back in 1988 in Plain City Ohio Amish country. It was an Amish cookbook, that I’ve sadly lost. It wasn’t a regional cookbook and I do not remember who wrote it or the exact title.
Do you happen to have this recipe? It was layering potatoes, onions carrots rice ground beef and tomatoes or
Tomato soup I can’t remember. Just layer it in order in a casserole dish.
It was so good and my dad loved it. He passed in 1995.
      Thanks Tessie! Hugs love ya!

Having grown up in the community in Mount Pleasant Michigan in St Louis Michigan. And knowing them closely. I'll be interested to see the portrayal of the lifestyle that she grew up with. Tessie is a great help and a great teacher this should be a good series I'm hoping it helps the 34 million people in the United States of America living under the poverty line and the 14 million that are now falling into the poverty line. As the dollar loses it power faces the USA not being the imperialistic leader of the world, sooner than later. So many more people are going to need to find ways to live without finances because it is important to know how to feed yourself and go and live with less and be happy. And to be able to do that as healthy and happily possible. I'm loving it. should help a lot of people. As well as entertaining. And teach. I don't know that I've ever spoke about it before but during the end of my bachelor's degree I worked for two years at the Mennonite restaurant in Middleton Michigan Restaurant in central Michigan. Omigosh the girls and boys did have intimacy. With multiple partners just like all the other teenagers were. My parents are too strict for that and my four brothers eyes on me. In reality I was much more virtualus and strict with myself than they were, the reality. They were dating, they were watching TV, they were grouping up at people's houses. Two years working with them four and five days and nights a week and holidays. And know them extremely extremely well. I spent lots of time making pies and prepping and cooking. the thing was a lot of them thought that they were so different, than the rest of us. they weren't at all. I used to compare them to the Catholic kids. Where their parents put so much pressure on them. They were having sex and smoking and during war wild things than almost any other religion I knew. That's just how it was. I'm still close with them today and they laugh about it. Especially the secrets about TV and their boyfriends oh my gosh!!! They said they'd never do that to their children and they didn't. What I have noticed is the Mennonites and Amish that do break away from the strictness of the religious part are usually extremely loving with their children way more than they were loved in A Gentle Way by their own parents. I say this because these are some of the closest friends of my lifetime then and now. I just thought today might be a good time to throw it out there. Because this series is going to be good and informative. Showing how in a country of 320 million plus people. we have approximately 400,000 of these two religious Faith. people mixed throughout the country still keeping their faith alive. Only a few of Amish and Mennonite ever stayed in their parents religion. so as far as I knew going back about ten Generations the majority leave the faith. They say it is isolating, outdated and they don't want it. They do learn how to cook and stretch a dollar. They usually do great in the outside world. They are all homeowners and farm owners. That's why the community stays so small. The majority of them leaving, every generation. Only the tiniest fraction stay. the fraction that doesn't want to go out into the world. I find that a precious choice for them. The average person that doesn't have that particular religious background it's just in the world no chance to isolate if they would want to have isolation. Mennonite Middleton restaurant is the number one Homestyle restaurant in all of Michigan. Yep two years I worked there I love those people they love me and I was actually more strict than they were that's why they love me so much I was tied around the dollar and cleaner than their own kids they loved me and they still do. And I love them.

We are friends with the Amish and have been for 25 years. We often drive the Amish to do their shopping trips or any other trip they may need to doctors, etc. We don't charge them, and in return, they help us with projects we can''t handle on our own. Holidays for the Amish are celebrated very differently than the English ways, but I did take a mother and her 20 year old son for an eye doctor appointment and then we went to Walmart. She got some groceries and he bought the biggest Valentine box of candy for his "girlfriend". They also court differently. We did go to the Dollar Tree where he purchased a card and a nice gift bag for his gift. I know we are so lucky to have friends like this.

I love the Amish kids I work with are only a few years younger than me I was in university and they were in high school. And then some of the women my age that already married and loved the date. But still hang out with their families. We're in our sixties and seventies now. Haven't been in central Michigan and 9 years going on 10 since my mom died. It was a nice chance to see everyone in person again I almost said real-time LOL I loved working at the Mennonite Diner in Middleton Michigan the best diner homemade food in Michigan. I'm not claiming it that's a fact and they learned it in rewards for decades.

Tessie I have not seen Lebanon Sweet Bologna that I recall. I feel up on Amish Trail Bologna and love it! Dad and I would go visit the Amish on Saturdays. We would go to breakfast and then go visit Amish homes. We would buy the Trail Bologna, Colby Cheese, fresh bread and a treat for me, fresh home made doughnuts. That’s been probably 50 years ago and I still remember the smells like it was yesterday. Loved it. We still visited the Amish shops but it wasn’t the same as in their homes. Everything went commercial. I grew up just outside the Plain City Amish Community I’m Ohio. Loved those days. My cousin lives there and shops their bent and dent store.
She brings me things from there once in awhile. What a treat!!

Hi Tessie. Enjoying your Amish series. I live in California but I am from Ohio originally and have German ancestry.. Every Thursday, my grandmother would make some kind of pork with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and dumplings made from Bisquick. One thing I miss that I can't find here is scrapple. I would love to have some again.
Also we have a large Mennonite community here in California. I do see Mennonites in the Dollar Tree. I have seen the ladies looking at the card section.

We have an amish community about a half hour from our home. The community exists of a country school, a dent and bent grocery store, furniture store, plant nursery, and a bakery out of their home. I haven't been there for a few years but when I was shopping there at the grocery store the prices were phenomenal. Cans of fruit for 25 cents and much more and if you wanted a delicious doughnut, roll, or any pastry you couldn't find anything as good as it was at their home bakery. I thoroughly enjoyed myself when we would travel down there for a part of a day. Their frugalness and simplistic life has always intrigued me so I am super excited to learn and even adopt some of their ways. Lastly I agree with the other subscribers who complemented you on your outfit in this video. You looked so prett in your colors today.

So interesting to know they go to grocery stores like Aldi. I would have never given that a thought not living in Amish Country. I also was surprised they buy canned soups as I would think they would make their own cream soups and maybe even can them. Funny, in some ways they do just like the English like snacking on pretzels; I wonder if popcorn is a snack for them?
Wow, learning lots of things new that my daughter and I didn’t learn while studying the Amish in homeschooling my daughter, unless I’ve forgotten since it was almost 32 years ago. She was very fascinated with the Amish lifestyle.

This is SO much fun, Tessie! I just love videos like this. We used to go to Ohio's Amish country (in the eastern-central part of Ohio --- Walnut Creek area) and I really enjoyed those little day trips. But when my father needed daily care for his cognitive problems, those trips unfortunately ended. So it's been years --- but now you're bringing it all back. Thank you!
Needless to say, not much has changed. Not surprising, since the Amish take their time when it comes to embracing change. (One of their best qualities, in my book! 😀)
I have heard of Lebanon balogna, but haven't tasted it. Now I'm on a mission to try to find some! Their baked goods on those road side stands are really fantastic. I can see why Amish wives and moms would think it would be crazy to pay $14 for a frozen pie, when she could bake one for less than $5! Or to spend $8 for a loaf of bread when the home-baked version would be about $2. When you multiply all those savings that accumulate due to the fact that convenience products are mostly off the shopping list, it can really add up! (But you already know that! That's what this series is all about! 😀) I can't wait to see more of it.
Final word... You look very pretty in that outfit. It fits the theme of the series and the colors and style are just right for your coloring and hair! Blessings to you and Chevy Man this evening!

I've noticed that so many things that the non-stop media news cycle gets itself really worked up about become "ancient history" within just a few days! Then they're immediately on to the next Big Thing. This seems to keep people in a constant state of anxiety. That can't be good for us! The Amish aren't completely out of touch of course, but they don't seem to be obsessive about every little thing --- things which most of us have no control over anyway! 🙂

I've always heard that SOS was a nickname given to a creamed sauce that thin sliced beef was added to., then put on top of two slices of toast.( Buddig sliced beef was good to use).

I love sweet bologna! When I visited PA in the 90's, I bought 5lbs to take home and frozen it in small portions to make it last! I also liked peas & cheese salad from a market (don't remember the name, but it had a pig in the logo!) Oh! I think it was The Pig 'n Whistle! Do you get flies in the house since you don't have a screen door? And how do you catch them? Blessings!

Thanks for another great video! The lake we go to in the summer is near an Amish community and we always stop at their stand and buy their baked goods...whoopie pies (banana is my favorite), blueberry doughnuts (the locals call them blueberry crack because they''re so addicting!), bread, and pretzels. The Amish are great bakers!

I am not Amish but we ate the same way when I was young . Mom was very frugal but u would never know it because the food was phenomenal. It definitely wasn't diet food but everyone worked hard so it didn't have much of a chance to cause u to gain weight. They did this thing called "trading" if my aunt raised cattle and we gardened, we would trade out foods. Milk or cheese for potatoes and fresh greens. That happened a lot so there was very few things we bought at the store .The food was wonderful and the families remained close. Much better times, happier times. I miss it. God bless u all Tessie.

We have quite a good sized Amish community here in NW Wis. I love to hear the clip-clop of the horses hooves as they go on the highway. The buggies mostly have husband and wife and a couple of small children in tow. To me, they seem to be very young families. I don't really see many older Amish usually. They shop in our local grocery store and also the Dollar General. The men have helped so many in our small community by doing yard work and roofing jobs and other building jobs. They are hard workers and don't charge very much. They will raise money for their small school by having a once a month "haystack dinner" at our local dining club building. It has become a popular event.

What I love most about your videos is how you stay calm in the midst of whatever is going on in this world. It brings a peace to those of us who watch. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not to thine own understanding.

You have such a adorable home and piece of property Tessie. Thanks for so many of your videos that teach stuff. I have learned different things but I just think it is neat to watch things you make, your thrifty Thurs. When I see pictures of your property it is very peaceful to me. I used to live in PA and was born in PA and it is so different from where i live in AZ. Many things you have talked about I know about from my mom cooking a certain way. Words you say are words my mom said when I was growing up. Then with living in PA I know some about the amish.

Going to love this series!!! When I moved from upstate NY to Gettysburg to Nanny my new granddaughter, her daddy brought home Lebanon Sweet Balona! Never had I heard of this but both my hubby and I became addicted to it! 😆 Where I grew up it was always Oscar Meyer Baloney. Yuk! Pork and Sauerkraut for new year was new to me, chicken corn soup, fastnaught, and corn hole game! Oh! And they love their Penn State Football! All that was pretty big where I worked. Sometimes I felt like such an outsider because I had no idea what people were talking about!!!!

Hi Tessie. We have a Aldis 40 minutes away and a Tin and Dent Amish store a half hour away. We also have a Amish Country Store. We try to go to them about every 3 months. The prices have went up at these stores though. I have never seen the Amish at a Dollar Tree. In the summer I like buying veggies and fruit from the Amish. Have a great evening.

My oh my ,haven't seen sweet Lebanon bologna in ages ..we used to have it in our lunches when I was a child. Miss it ,live in the south now ,they are not familiar with it down here, grew up in Adam's County PA.. grandparents were of German decent.we did all our own butchering in the fall..and yes sauerkraut, pork and mashed potatoes was always a New Years day tradition. Grandmother would bake homemade loaves of bread at least once a week, mixing it up in a large oval red rimmed enameled pan. At least 7 to 9 loaves at a time. So miss those days.

When you work as hard as the Amish, you burn off those calories. When I was younger and had to do a lot of gardening, we ate very well, and I was very skinny. Now I watch calories, am sedentary, and struggle with weight gain.
