  • My refrigerator has been making a noise like a fan rubbing somewhere in the freezer drawer. This fix should work for other models that have a lower freezer drawer. Now let's fix it.
    I hope this video will help others with the problem. Thank you for watching.

    Have an LG, tech guy told me to catch it when it wasn't running, throw the breaker, wait 8 hours, turn it back on. Just put a reminder so you don't forget. Ice doesn't melt in the ice bucket, but does around the fan. Whenever it starts that noise I do it. Lots easier than taking it all apart every 6 to 8 months.

    My LG fridge was making a very loud "fan" noise and this video answered my question! I first took an air compressor to the coils in the back, then pulled the freezer out and used a meat mallet to knock the ice off. Put it all back together and quiet as can be! THANK YOU!!!

    Thank you for this post. Our LG LMXC23746S did exactly what you are showing. Fan got really noisy. A bit hard to remove back panel as it was frozen in but finally got it off. The coils had large buildup of ice which we removed with hair dryer.

    I really can't thank you enough for this video. 4 year old fridge and noticed a loud noise coming and was thinking I had to replace the compressor. Nope, it was ice in the same exact place. I could detach my panel as I couldn't figure out how to release the blue clip on the left side. So I stuck a space heater in there for 2 hours, all ice gone. No more noise.

    • @DaleLucid

    My LG freezer did the “Ice Over”, but the freezer door continues to make a vibrating noise. What I thought was how cleverly you removed the door with the rail attached. Thanks for the video. You helped me solve the fan noise problem however I was not able to get the back fan cover plate off for fear of breaking it so I used your suggestion and got a $15 Harbor Freight heat gun. I heated the plastic outside cover where the fan was located being careful not to put it to close as it does heat up the surface. So far so good as the noise is gone for now. I am sure it will come back sometime. Again thanks for the video.

      It's more tough than you think. I'm afraid of the same thing. Problem is that you can pinch the release tab but then the ice buildup preveents removing the panel. Best advice is stay patient. I'm glad that you were able to get it taken care of.

Put all the frozen items outside (it was winter), put the refrigerator foods in a cooler (great time to throw out expired or unused condiments and wash the shelves) and left it unplugged and doors open for 24 hours. Ice is a huge issue in the new fridge styles ice should not build up but it does it’s a known issue. The other issue is stuff gets pushed back into the rear wall and that rubs the fan on some Units that is the issue. If ice builds again it could be the defrost system failing if you google what the condensation unit should look like you will get photos of a correct working unit. No frost on it or half covered usually indicates low on refrigeration gas. I always recommend that if issue exists empty the unit let it defrost then start it up let it run for 24 hrs then put your cold food back in it.

    I've had everything removed for the last couple of hours with the breaker off and a space heater running. There was some visible ice on the left side that has melted. Having trouble getting those clips to release. Do they release when pushed down, or in the up position? The back panel won't budge and I feel like I'm gonna break it if I pull to hard.

    • @DaleLucid

      The tabs push down as you might have expected. I had the same issue. The ice REALLY interfered with the left side. Get the right loose and work at the left.
      At some point I just resigned myself to the idea that a broken tab couldn't do more damage than the ice. The plastic was actually pretty strong.

      @@DaleLucid Reassembled everything and finally plugged it in about 8PM last night, no sound what so ever, like new, late this morning, about 12 hours later, I looked inside the ice machine, (in top left door ice machine) and it did make some ice, a relief since it means the ice machine fan is still operating. Now, It took me about 3 hours of defrosting with a heat gun to even get that back panel off, and there was still about 1/2 pound of ice surrounding the entire fan unit and another large block covering the coils in back left side behind the panel, another half hour to defrost all that (and over flow the water catch under fridge). Apologies for no pictures, I am a huge fan of media, I simply do NOT have the patience for that when I start something.

    • @phubarnow5388
      @phubarnow5388 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaleLucid Now I have some thoughts why this machine does this.. if you look at the ice machine fan, it circulates cold air from the freezer coils up some ducting through the left side of fridge wall, up to the left door up into the ice machine, and blows that cold air over the cube tray. ( I am guessing your fridge is much the same) if so, when you open the left hand door and look at the lower inside, hinge area, you should see two "ports" or openings that seal with silicone rubber gaskets that attached to the door side. (The next statement is speculation)... "I think those ports not only send cold air to cube tray but return the air, recirculates the air, closed loop one might say". There appear to be several instances in ths "loop" that introduce moisture into the ice air loop, opening the bottom freezer drawer all the time (maybe), the small trap door in the ice dispenser gets stuck open (mine does sometimes) and draws in moist air, the two silicone rubber gaskets on the left door not sealing properly, every time you open any door / drawer all of the recirculating fans are to stop, until door / drawer is closed, in particular the top left fridge door, again moist air is getting introduced into the system. So we have all that mist air getting recirculated into the ice freezer fan. I am wondering if turning off the switch on the ice machine for period of time, every few months or so, like a schedule, might help prevent reoccurance? Give time for any ice build up to dissipate, via any defrost cycle.

      Below is a l8nk to a test and reset video. If you unplugged or turned off the power it should reset. It may take the ice maker 24 - 48 hours to start making ice. You exist for your cat. Excellent video. How long does the deicing procedure last? Mine seems to ice up about every two to three months. I unplug it, clear out the freezer drawers, and wedge the door open for 3 or 4 hours. Then the cycle repeats. If I use your procedure, it may last longer. There is no leak, however, this is Florida. As an aside, this shouldn't happen period. I tried calling LG but got nowhere. This is a poor design for an $1800-3000 refrigerator.

      Beau is my wife's cat. He's just nosey LOL.
      I didn't have further problems after I did this for the second time. It's been a while but there was a small fan assembly that was particularly satisfactory.
      Samsung and LG both have class action lawsuits against them so look for that. I found that out when I moved and my home warranty wouldn't cover the Fridge because of the lawsuit because Samsung had to fix it. It cost me $50 to have a technician tell me that. It's a long story but I ended up having that refrigerator hauled off for junk.

  • @jenniferhute2017
    @jenniferhute2017 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Did you ever figure out where the water was coming from? We have spent so much money on this issue. Had the home warranty people out 6 times, had the LG service people out twice. They have changed the fan so many times. They swear the ice is from condensation that there must be a small air leak. That just cant be. In our case the ice builds up in 24 hours again. We're living out of a cooler. Your video is a lot of help. I'm sending it to the LG guy right now. I really don't want to buy another fridge. Can I remove that fan? Can I remove the icemaker? I dont need ice or water. I'll ask the tech.

    • @DaleLucid
      @DaleLucid  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ok. I looked at the video to refresh my memory. It's been some time since I made it.
      First of all I'm not an expert so please take this all with a grain of salt. There's a lot of misinformation on the Internet. That said I did not have to fix the fridge a third time. (This video was the second.)
      The biggest suspect was that because the mechanism that holds the door closed against the seal is the weakest I have ever seen. I'm pretty sure that sometimes closing the door it would not seal and went unnoticed. If you live in an area with much humidity you'll notice the problem is more common and happens more frequently during high humidity weather.
      The other thing I did is that I had a bag of ice in the drawer. In AZ we use a LOT of ice. I removed that and didn't do that again.
      Once I took particular care in making sure that the freezer drawer was closed tight and I removed the ice, no more problem.
      I hope that this helps you.
      I would not remove the fan since that is the effect and not the cause. The ice will still build up on condenser and that is a bigger problem than the noisy fan.
      As a side note turn off the water supply behind your fridge and disconnect it from the fridge. Get rid of the ice and use a glass to empty the pressure from the water dispenser. Then finally remove the water filter and use your fridge. If the ice returna with absolutely no water in or going to the fridge then FOR SURE you have a problem with condensation. Otherwise there is in all likelihood a water leak somewhere. I'm betting condensation though.
      Please let me know if anything helps. You can email me at BlindGuyCan@gmail.com. Good luck 🤞🏼

      John Gibson I’ve been working on a specific brand for 19 years, but have done this exact “temporary fix” to this model. Thawing it and removing all the ice. The way it looks when I take it apart seems like an air leak of some sort. If it was defrost it seems it would be a more constant build up of ice across the evap. Have you or anyone heard of air leaking issues with this model ?

      derrick blair there is a explanation of this out on the internet if it was an air leak it would look more like a snow cone which is what happens when you don’t shut the door all the way. Ice build up is bad in Samsung as well the fix for that fridge was a longer piece of metal in the drain hole it would freeze and back up. It didn’t work. A little research on google may get him the answer he needs.

    • @johngibson3594
      @johngibson3594 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      derrick blair some of these freezer doors didn’t shut all the way too and yes could be an air leak . There are so many unknowns. Thawing unit out like he did may correct the issue if it doesn’t then it would be worth more time. Ice build up in the fans is an issue with a lot of brands.

    • @DaleLucid
      @DaleLucid  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couple of things may help.
      1. Make sure ice is melted completely or it will just come back.
      2. Make SURE that everyone is closing the freezer completely. It doesn't seal well and the alarm is quiet.
      3. Do NOT put bags of ice in the freezer. They sweat in humidity and then bring it to your fridge. Maybe try a box of baking soda to keep things dry.
      Good luck and thanks for watching.
      I haven't had this exact issue in a side by side but freezers have fans and moisture forms ice around them.

      That would be my first guess. The little fins in that serpentine fan buzz like that when ice builds up. Easy test is pull freezer drawers unplug fridge and let a space heater blow against the back wall of the freezer compartment for a few hours or so. It may take even longer to melt the ice that builds up around that fan. But if you see ice in the back left corner that's your problem. Not very hard to fix. Mine is still quiet.

      There are two fans. The larger one is recirculation, the smaller biscuit fan sends freezing air to the ice maker. The smaller fan has a heating element (orange wires) but does not melt the ice. There is a 2017 service bulletin to move the defrost sensor from the evaporator outlet to the inlet pipe. Attach 1.5" from the vertical portion of the inlet pipe.

      I've found a clogged drain tube tends to be the issue with ice formation around the coils around the fan. There is also a heater line that runs into some of these drain tubes. You may be able to clear the drain from the rear of the unit. There should be a drain pan into which this tube runs. If it is clogged, the drain backs up and the effluent from the defrost cycle backs up. Sometimes it can get so bad that this effluent runs into the bottom of the freezer and will drip out of the unit onto the floor. Typically, though the best way to clear this up completely is to do the process of pulling out the drawer, the slide and the panel around the fan and clearing everything out, wiping it down and making sure all electrical connections are dry and plugged together correctly. The advice to Catherine Gramze which was given by an LG tech is incorrect. Yes, you can clear the ice by simply leaving the door open. And this may very well solve the problem. However, I've found that the clogged or restricted drain is the real issue. If this is not cleared out, the problem will re-occur.

    My new LG refrigerator gurgles like crazy--and makes several other strange noises. And twice so far when I opened the door when it was gurgling the freaking thing powered itself off and back on. AND since the ice cube maker is not connected and I verified it is switched off it is not the ice cube maker making the noises. I'm and old guy and all my other refrigerators never made all these crazy noises or randomly powered themselves off/on. I am beginning to get a bad feeling that my LG refrigerator is a lemon. I'm now worried--I better not have just paid $1400 for a piece of junk!

      I think that the 2 biggest contributions to my issue was 1 I stored a leftover bag of ice in the freezer and 2 I think that the freezer drawer was not getting closed and sealed well. I had to do the defrost thing once more but then had no problems.
      Make sure your door seals are good and make sure the lower back left side has good air flow. Maybe clear any dust or debris on the coil. I hope this helps.

      I had a post on this where the guy said once he fixed it and was diligent about making sure the drawer was good and closed he stopped having the issue. He had a good point. The drawer doesn't have a very good mechanism to make sure that it's sealed.

    I feel desperate at this point. Our fridge was bought March 12/2022 -
    It buzzes, vibrates for about 2 hours at any given time. I have auditory processing issues and ADHD. I cannot filter out the noise of this buzzing. It is affecting my mental health, as silly as that sounds. People with noise sensitivity will understand what i mean though. A second LG technician is coming tomorrow after the first one told me i should just sell my fridge on Kijiji!!

      There is a settlement lawsuit that you might want to look into. Perhaps you can get enough refund to replace it. Avoid Samsung as they have similar issues.

    There has got to be a reason why ice is building up in there (not defrosting, etc.) simply defrosting/melting the ice off is not fixing it (maybe for a week or two.)

    • @DaleLucid
      @DaleLucid  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Two things I did. Don't know which fixed it but I didn't have the issue again after.
      1. I had a bag of ice that I didn't use in the cooler. I just got rid of it.
      2. I made sure that the drawer was closed well. It seems like it would bounce open a little or just not seal good.
      Hope that helps

    Thanks for this video! Our only 2 yr old LG fridge started making loud noise a while ago driving us nuts so we purchased a chest freezer just for this purpose to move all the stuff to and my husband decided today is the day. So we found the same ice build up as yours but the back panel was so frozen stuck, currently using the heater to defrost. What a nightmare! Our old LG fridge never had this issue and had it for over 10 yrs!! Dale, How's the freezer now? Fridge these days should never have to manually defrost it! Do we need to replace the defrost heater like this video below?? I'd appreciate if anyone could share their experiences with this issue and how to resolve for the long term 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

      Thanks for sharing this video. I have since relocated but I didn't have any further issues after this. I thought at first the problem might have been bagged ice that I put in the freezer. Now I'm pretty sure that is because the mechanism that keeps the drawer drawn closed is weak. I make sure to close the drawer well and not just slide and leave. I think it may have been bouncing back open slightly.
      Thanks for watching.

    Bad design. The fan is to cool the ice maker in the door. If you have a slow ice maker ice on the coils may be your problem. Another symptom is loud popping noises (defrost mode). Next time buy a fridge without water/ice in the door.
