I’ve defrosted the coil twice and finally came across this video. Found that the defrost sensor was bad and replaced it. No more ice on the coils. Thank you for sharing how to correct the problem rather than addressing the symptom like so many other videos.
Panel didn’t want to come off. Used hairdryer around upper right edge to melt the ice holding cover. Couple minutes and it came off starting the lift from bottom and then edges carefully. Useless manual has no defrost info that’s understandable. Easy fix. Fan runs now. Thank you.
Agree, we’ve been fixing this fridge since we got it. Only 10 years old - should last longer! Our beer/spare fridge is a Maytag and it still runs great! Time for a new fridge NOT Samsung!
Video was spot on. We bought our unit new 8 years ago and when today I took it apart, I find the back has cracks in it with bubble gum sealant covering the original cracks. The cracks have getting bigger over time time and now the bigger cracks are now allowing humid air in. The back is now a spider web of cracks. The unit was damaged when sold to me as new. Both Grand Appliance and Samsung say “ Not my problem”.
Thank you so much for this video!!Our fridge was being SO noisy, we were about to get a new one and watched your video and unscrewed the back panel as you had instructed and there was a huge ice crystal that hard formed in the fan compartment!! I removed it and now fridge works perfectly and silently 🤩🤩🤩
Thank you so very much. I've been looking for information on troubleshooting this fridge and even the manufacturer doesn't provide anything. You are the best.

Can it also be caused by an overstuffed freezer? I have a garbage Samsung and I'm taking a look at it today. I pulled the fridge out and cleaned the backside and it was quiet for two days. Noisy again. Its that fan. Thank you SO much. I love your channel.
Thank you! Our fridge is identical to this one. This makes perfect sense! Appreciate your expertise with this. Once we empty out the fridge I will do this. Thanks again!
Just wanted to comment on this to boost the awareness of this video. My Samsung started to freeze up and froze up twice within 6 months. The 2nd time I heard the fan hitting the ice until it eventually stopped completely and the temp was 60F in the fridge. I got your heater kit, bought the tools you suggested off of Amazon, and did the fix you gave. It's been over a year now and I've not any issues with the evaporator/fan and the fridge is cooling as it should. Around $60 and a couple hours invested vs a $400-500 service call that would probably NOT have been a permanent fix because Samsung refuses to even acknowledge all the issues with these fridges and recall/repair them properly. I appreciate your help and thorough guidance. Unfortunately I have a separate issue with the ice maker not staying cold enough and the ice being wet/slushy and not forming proper shapes. I thought it might be the gasket separating it from the fridge area being loose and letting warm air into it but I'm not sure. Any advice on that? I know there's a class-action lawsuit about it but I don't know if there's actually any decent fixes. Can't remember the model # but mine is a french door model with the Twin Cooling Plus and the Flex Drawer.
Thanks for a very informative helpful video. Our Samsung french door fridge is about 7 yrs old. I first noticed a rust spot about 2 inches in diameter on the upper middle part of the rear when I moved the fridge out to shut off the water supply to replace the filter. Didn't think much about it. No visible water on the floor or any indication of it not running as it should. Not too long after that I heard the fan noise. Took it apart and sure enough, ice formation on the coils behind the panel. I melted the ice, put it back together and that cured the fan noise............for 4 weeks. Had to do it again. I need a more permanent fix (additional heater?). Samsung appliances SUCK! I had one of their exploding washing machines, a 65 inch flat screen TV that broke down 5 times right after we purchased it. I give up on Samsung! Oh yeah, that rust spot is now turning into a hole. I think it's getting to be new fridge time shortly.
A very helpful video! Thanks. Others show how to deice the fan etc. but then don't go into WHY there is ice buildup. Without addressing that the problem would just re-occur. Thanks to Ben's Appliances!
great tip on force defrosting. Of course the manual doesnt tell you about THAT!! It helped loosen the ice because we could not get the back off. Once we got the back off the ice was completely covering everything. Hair dryer and small hammer and screwdriver (carefully used) got it all off in less than an hour. A side benefit is opportunity for deep clean of the entire fridge!! ;-) We were able to do all this without disconnecting the wires. There was a enough room to work.
THANK YOU BEN, I had this fridge for 10 years and had no idea about the different defrost features. Everything is going good so far, just having trouble getting one of the connectors off.
Hi Ben, ok, I'm just about had my fill with this fridge...I did add the heater element only to have the ice build up in 2 months. What else can it be??? What was the item you replaced by the drain hole and what is the item number? That is the only thing I did not replace. Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you for your great video! You are appreciated!
I can't find a link for how to do forced defrost on my model. I tried pressing and holding the refrigerator and the power freeze. Didn't work on model RF28T500SR. The control panel on this is inside the door on the right side. I unplugged the fridge, took out all the food, took out and washed all shelves and drawers, pulled it out from the wall and vacuumed the back. This all took several hours and I would have thought that would have been sufficient to thaw any ice, but perhaps not, as the thing is still humming away! I was hoping to try the forced defrost before biting the bullet and taking things apart. Thanks for the thorough instructions on how to do that.
Great viddy Ben. I tried all the options shown but never could get the panel off. So I've turn the fridg off to let it defrost on it's own. One question; could having food (jars, containers, etc flush against the panel holes interfere with the proper functioning of the defrosting & then lead to ice buildup that affects the fan? Should I maintain a 1-2 inch gap? Thanks.
I found a wifi plug that i programmed to turn the refrigerator completely off for 2.5 hours every night. This allows for sufficient thaw of the coil around the fan each day. Perfectly quiet since then.
great video, question if my fan is not working anymore how/where can I get the model and where can I buy a new fan? I've had the ice buildup issue a couple of times in the last 5 years most recent one is now. Thanks!
I didn't realize you could defrost the panel with buttons. I yanked out the panel and lost a little bit of the styrofoam and got a small crack. I used a hair dryer to defrost all the ice buildup which was causing the noisy evaporator fan issue. Worked perfect. The fridge is quiet and keeping a 37 degree temp.
When it developed ice just go to your circuit breaker and shut off the fridge. Keep the door shut for a few hours it won’t ruin any food. Put the breaker back on and no noisy fan hitting ice. Do that once in a while

I have a older Frigidaire side by side. Never had a problem with it then beside an occasional fridge freeze up.. The freezer side started to lose temp the ice was melting but still frozed. I ordered a new defrost sensor and some other parts from you. I went to move the defrost sensor lower as you did in the video but I didn't have enough clearance. The aluminum tabs were in the way. Can I carefully bend them out of the way so I may attach it lower?
Hi, I bought the pieces in the kit and did the install. 3 weeks later, fan noise again. So, the new heater I installed is clearly not working. What do I do? Test for power coming from the power plug on the left with a multimeter? Or pull run force defrost for 5 minutes with panel hanging and check that the heaters are warm or hot? Any tips, I would greatly appreciate it.
Any tips on what could be wrong? Fridge is cool, a couple weeks ago we had a lot of built up ice in the freezer. We defrosted it, now it won't freeze again. Is it time to retire it??
A way to get the ice melted quicker in the drip pan drain tube is to put salt water in it. I'm sure it's not good for it in other places but I needed it to drain sooner than later.
So, the question stands... not sure if I may have missed it.. Do I leave the door open when running the defrost on the refrigerator the whole 20min? Or do I then close the doors and wait 20min?.. thanks in advance! Definitely gonna Subscribe to your Channel! Cheers!
Hi Ben, I have a question. When you removed the back panel, I noticed what appeared to be clips, I also see arrows on my back panel has arrows on the panel that are hard to see, but they look like they align with your video. Should these clips be depressed to remove the panel instead of grip and rip? My panel is not coming off, and I am letting it defrost now. Thanks.
Ben, can you please tell me what size screw is on the top of the center bracket that holds the cover down? Excellent video btw, especially the warning about breaking the cover.
I am experiencing similar issue, had noisy fan (I think) and now the main fridge is 58F while the drawer fridge is 34 and freezer works great. So I think the fan failed…what’s the best way to isolate that? Remove and continuity test? Does fan fail make sense if the fridge drawer works fine? Another issue is the door temp display shows 36F while the actual temp is 58F…frustrating
Id check the thermostat for ohms and see if it varies much vs. the stated range, as it sounds like its bad. "Cold air falls" and many times, when the cabinet is not cold enough, the very bottom can still be a good temperature, so its possible that all the cold air is staying at the bottom, but not mixing enough to get the rest of fridge properly cold.
@@bensappliancesandjunk ok will check. Is the thermostat also behind that panel? Also do you mean the main thermostat or the defrost thermostat? I did run defrost cycle to no avail. Understand about the cold air falling. Still seems plausible the fan is bad since it was making noise just before this temp rise
hi, followed your steps to put in Fd. frig started beeping as expected. but it kept going for 45 minutes and never shut off. How can you tell when Fd has finished? Finally I unplugged the frig and the beeping stopped. thanks. nice video. very helpful.
Hello Ben. Could you tell why you have a jumper on the left side of the defrost heater? My samsung has a temperature sensor in that connector, but it goes on the buttom row (the one that is free in your fridge) Its an older model RF260BEAESL
Just a quck question, will the freezer say running while I do this? I want to do each one at time, so I can keep things cold, or is this, strip the while fridge and defrost all?
Question I want to buy a refrigerator with the water and ice feature. But my kitchen is small so I have my refrigerator in the dining room 6ft away from where the connector for the water is. It's there a way to extend the water hook up connector? There's a big double door glass door in the way so do I need to run it around the top of the door? 🤷🤷🤷🤷
We have a silver Samsung French door fridge. We have a problem the very bottom crisper drawer always has major ice build up I had to remove the ice every few weeks
Do you have a video of how to install the heater itself, just to be 100% clear to get the best results? I did whole defrost in the fridge (took like 6 hours as it was really frozen up), and 2-3 weeks later, I see ice on the back again. I need to resolve this once and for all or get a new fridge. EDIT: found it, thanks !
Thoughts? First, awesome video, helped me defrost and fix the issue however it froze back up again 6 months later. I wound up buying the longer tab that goes deeper into the drain tube as many have mentioned. Well I did the defrost and got everything done and went to slide the long tab into the drain hole and it won't go. There is ice frozen in it haha. Cant get the tube to thaw out completely, any thoughts?
I heated up a short length of copper wire (red hot) with a torch and melted the ice that was clogging the drain tube. Then poured a small amount of boiling water through it.
If I have ice build up on the copper refrigerant line, what most likely is the cause? You mentioned defrosting issues, does the fridge defrost automatically or is this defrost operation only occurring whne you use Rd and Fd defrost? Thanks!
It automatically defrost every so often. The systems ability to fully remove all the frost gets degraded due to blockages in the drain tube and water infiltration of the evaporator panel as well as sensors going offspec. The refrigerant lines up top get the most moist air so they soak up more ice than the defrost system can handle.
@@bensappliancesandjunk thank you! So given that my copper line almost always gets frozen which fix would you recommend? My evaporator cover has the Styrofoam basically destroyed due to removing it with ice. Looks like I can replace that. What other parts should I do? Also, does the defrost mode with Rd cause the refrigerator to fully warm up or just the coil? Meaning, can I run this defrost with the food inside without going bad?
@Bens Appliances and Junk Where can i can get the fan you mentioned to purchase (ebay/amazon ). also Do you have a video of how to replace the fan in the freezer section in this exact model refridgerator. PLEASE REPLY AND ADVISE, I NEED YOU HELP ASAP !
I have a Samsung model RF266 Refrigerator and the ice maker continuously turns on and off and dings, chimes every few seconds day and night . I even removed the ice maker and disconnected the wiring to the ice maker. hoping that would work but it still continues to chime. What may be causing this. I have unplugged it several times to reset but does not work.
They do not tell you that Samsung refrigerators are pieces of crap that this happens to right when your warranty runs out. I'll never buy a Samsung appliance again.
I have a Samsung RF24FSEDBSR and the ice maker doesn`t work, which one of your replacements should I order? I also need the sealer but don`t see it on your site. Do I need to replace the circuit board at the same time?
Icemaker for that fridge: bens-appliances.com/products/samsung-refrigerator-icemaker-da97-13718c I always suggest the total moisture kit,. which includes the SIL-4500: bens-appliances.com/products/samsung-icemaker-leak-moisture-kit Your call on circut board. It can help, but isn't the top most-likely thing to solve issue. I will note though that its VERY cheap relative to other models. @@bensappliancesandjunk Ben the ice maker isn`t iced up looks like it might not be getting water what should I look for? Could it bee the circuit board?
I pulled my panel off and had zero ice build up. The noise sounded like a slow dying fan so I ordered an upgraded version through Amazon. Replaced the fan and put everything back together again. Turned on fridge and after about 10 mins, that damn humming sound is back, constant hum. Goes off from time to time. Is there another fan or culprit that could be making this sound? We have no problems with our ice maker (upgraded a year ago and works perfectly). We’ve done forced defrost, left fridge off for several hours, etc. Thank you.
Was a NEW ice maker the upgrade and at what cost? Or did you do Ben's fix with additional heat tape? I am having issues with my 8 yr old Samsung freezer.
So here's what I did: ....I took off the white cover...dried it out in the sun...left fridge off for a day to defrost...took 100% silicone a ran a bead right on top of yellow foam edging....let it set up 5 min (to skin over) and carefully screwed back in...3 months and no issue....fingers crossed...

Any tips on what could be wrong? Fridge is cool, a couple weeks ago we had a lot of built up ice in the freezer. We defrosted it, now it won't freeze again. Is it time to retire it??
What a great video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Subd!
Cheers!
Your choice. It'll run either way.
Hi Ben,
I have a question.
Thanks.
Hi Ben, I have a Samsung RF23HCEDBSR/AA. Do the parts here work with my particular model?
Thanks
Is the process the same for the freezer?
I just purchased this Samsung Refrigerator this passed weekend,, could it be ice build up already???
Excellent video
Thank you
Where can I find the part u mentioned about here
very informative video, thank you!!
hi, followed your steps to put in Fd. frig started beeping as expected. but it kept going for 45 minutes and never shut off. How can you tell when Fd has finished? Finally I unplugged the frig and the beeping stopped. thanks. nice video. very helpful.
Mine won’t stop beeping either. Did you ever figure something out besides unplugging it?
Hello Ben. Could you tell why you have a jumper on the left side of the defrost heater? My samsung has a temperature sensor in that connector, but it goes on the buttom row (the one that is free in your fridge) Its an older model RF260BEAESL
They vary from model to model. Some have a standalone thermal fuse, others are integrated, and others do not have any.
@@bensappliancesandjunk oh ok, checked the fuse and it has no continuity, will replace. Thank you!
Just a quck question, will the freezer say running while I do this? I want to do each one at time, so I can keep things cold, or is this, strip the while fridge and defrost all?
It'll defrost the ice behind the panel in the freezer, but only enough to remove the ice, then it'll trip off.
Can you give a part number for the parts you discussed.
Great video! Very helpful
Fixed mine, thanks boss!
Should be able to splice two lines with a John Guest fitting
hi may you sugest web sit teathing fixing frdg thanks
We have a silver Samsung French door fridge. We have a problem the very bottom crisper drawer always has major ice build up I had to remove the ice every few weeks
Do you have a video of how to install the heater itself, just to be 100% clear to get the best results? I did whole defrost in the fridge (took like 6 hours as it was really frozen up), and 2-3 weeks later, I see ice on the back again. I need to resolve this once and for all or get a new fridge.
EDIT: found it, thanks !
Yes, I have multiple on my channel
Cycle lots of warm water into the drain til it clears
I heated up a short length of copper wire (red hot) with a torch and melted the ice that was clogging the drain tube.
Then poured a small amount of boiling water through it.
Hello, I have a Samsung that makes a loud noise vibration when I try to get water. Can you please help me please. Thank you.
The fan needed varies by model#. Whats your Samsung refrigerator's model#?

I have a Samsung model RF266 Refrigerator and the ice maker continuously turns on and off and dings, chimes every few seconds day and night . I even removed the ice maker and disconnected the wiring to the ice maker. hoping that would work but it still continues to chime. What may be causing this. I have unplugged it several times to reset but does not work.
@Bens Appliances and Junk how tdo you access the ice maker and test it on this model samsung refridgerator ? PLEASE HELP
Please check out my videos where I do exactly that on my channel. I have 2 videos doing exactly what you're requesting.
Icemaker for that fridge: bens-appliances.com/products/samsung-refrigerator-icemaker-da97-13718c
I always suggest the total moisture kit,. which includes the SIL-4500: bens-appliances.com/products/samsung-icemaker-leak-moisture-kit
Your call on circut board. It can help, but isn't the top most-likely thing to solve issue. I will note though that its VERY cheap relative to other models. Here's a link to that (its another website we own, but since its an OEM part its on a different area of the site): oemparts.bens-appliances.com/products/pcb-assembly-eeprom
@@bensappliancesandjunk Ben the ice maker isn`t iced up looks like it might not be getting water what should I look for? Could it bee the circuit board?
@scottcaswell3139 check icebox temp. Then check water to door. If it doesn't work either valve may he bad. Could be iced up too
Thanks Ben, great info
I pulled my panel off and had zero ice build up. The noise sounded like a slow dying fan so I ordered an upgraded version through Amazon. Replaced the fan and put everything back together again. Turned on fridge and after about 10 mins, that damn humming sound is back, constant hum. Goes off from time to time. Is there another fan or culprit that could be making this sound? We have no problems with our ice maker (upgraded a year ago and works perfectly). We’ve done forced defrost, left fridge off for several hours, etc. Thank you.
Did you get this sorted as I’ve cleared the ice and still getting the humming sound from the fan
Was a NEW ice maker the upgrade and at what cost? Or did you do Ben's fix with additional heat tape? I am having issues with my 8 yr old Samsung freezer.
fantastic video, thank you
Does this method work on a bottom freezer loud humming noise?? Does the refrigerator evap also cool the freezer?
It has a separate evaporator. The general idea would work there as well
You can accelerate defrosting with a steamer by pulling the edge up and steaming the underside. It takes minutes
Hello, I am a beginner refrigeration mechanic and I have a problem of not knowing where to go to buy spare parts in bulk, would you know anywhere?
Depends on what kind of refrigeration parts you need. Is it for refrigerators or air conditioners or what?
Read what he was saying a beginning refrigerator meachnic
Thank you for this video!
Fixed mine with the wife’s hair dryer thx.:). The ice maker on these is garbage!
Does the beeping ever stop while in defrost mode?
yes. can take an hour on my fridge
Install the heater. It's the only solution after battling with our for years.
Oh, I 100% agree. I just didn't want to push only the heater, since I already have 2 videos just about that part already
Definitely. Saves you the trouble of doing the whole process over and over again.
Keep them coming
So here's what I did: ....I took off the white cover...dried it out in the sun...left fridge off for a day to defrost...took 100% silicone a ran a bead right on top of yellow foam edging....let it set up 5 min (to skin over) and carefully screwed back in...3 months and no issue....fingers crossed...
