The best debut album ever. This album was recorded by two people. Tom Sholz and singer Brad Delp, in Tom’s basement.

Texas Magnolia The story of Tom Scholz and the making of the debut Boston album would make anyone feel like a slacker. Other than the vocals and some drumming, Schulz did EVERYTHING. He designed and built the guitar and effects. He built the basement studio. He wrote the songs. He played nearly all of the instruments. He recorded and engineered the album. I believe that he acted as manager for the “group”. I wonder how involved he was in creating the cover art. It’s just an amazing accomplishment.

One of the best debut albums ever. I really liked their second album "Dont look Back" also. You should do something from Meatloaf like "Bat out of Hell". That maybe the only other debut album that comes close to Boston in the 70s. Other choices from the 70s that were awesome would be Queen "Prophets song" or Styx "Castle Walls".

  • @JeromeDukes
    @JeromeDukes 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

This song for me is a 5.0. Everything about it caters to my tastes musically, especially the scream'n/soaring guitar. Delp's vocals is awesome, the dropout to acoustic, with the hand clapping has such an impact, just makes you want to smile. Great review and thanks for reacting to this classic song.
By the way, Alex Lifeson has a solo album called "Victor". One track on there is called "Shut Up" features his wife and her girlfriend. The lyrics are based on conversations wives have about their husbands when girls get together. It's hilarious and a must listen.
Lastly, Manny threw out a challenge, stating as far as pure prog rock songs go, only Genesis has made the cut. The Boston song was not a pure prog song. I think Roundabout Yes or Digital Man Rush should make the cut.

Rocky Mountain is better live because he improves, and stops when he wants to. Then, he records a tongue in cheek to celebrity life in “Life’s Been Good” that’s “dope” as well and shows his personality. Thank you.

Yes the best album of songs that are ALL hits. But for me it’s was the live performance. The arena goes dark. Silence. Foreplay. One top light center stage, then smoke machine starts. Foreplay... then as the final drums start, this massive stage spaceship rises to the top of the stage. It’s the spaceship in person, that appears on the album cover. And then... guitar. Fire tubes, and smoke. They have the most amazing set to back up the music. Confetti bursts, lasers, and Sholtz rising to the top of the stage wearing a long cape, the grabs a rope and does a Tarzan over our heads. Delps voice is amazing as the mic sort of hangs down to his head so he is looking up with his chest neck and head extended... full voice extension. Sholtz is amazing to watch as he goes from organ while wearing his guitar strapped to his back, switching from one to the other.
Finally, the late 70s up to MTV, was Corporate Rock with bands like Journey, Kansas, Foreigner, Styx, etc. Music and albums were heavily “produced” and tours were amazing with elaborate sets and production gimmicks. Criticized by some by my favorite bands ever.

I knew you were digging it when that head was bopping during the guitar solo, and during foreplay you were like a maestro directing a symphony, that's what's so cool, and what struck me when I first heard this, other bands were doing the rock with a little over lay of classical, ELO did it, "Roll Over Beethoven ", Diadato, think thats their name, lol, been a while guys, some of my memory banks degraded, think Diadato did 2001 movie theme , sped it up threw in drums , keyboards, guitar, sounds cool, then there's "Classical Gas", song, forgot guy's name. Then there's Focus with "Hocus Pocus ", look at Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein ", is heavy prog, I guess you could say, but it's like one big oveture, then speaking of which, "Fool's Oveture", by Supertramp, everyone was doing that combo, but put they're own fingerprint on it, just like fingerprints, no two are alike. ,, do check out Diadato, they didn't get as big as ELO, but had a good run, the 70's, you've got a lot to cover in just that decade, was a renaissance going on. Enjoy, Peace ✌

Are y'all messing with me? Are y'all really messing with ME??? You know I can't be objective with my faves from the 60s and 70s. I'll impart what I can about this tune. Smash hit back in the day. Only criticism from folks back then was that it was over produced and was commercial "corporate rock". I think the production was cool. It gave the tune a clean, crisp sound. Most of it was recorded in guitarist Tom Scholz's home basement studio. What was so captivating back then was the unique tone of Scholz's guitar. Bottom line, it's an excellent tune and an all time classic. I'd go so far as to call it groovy and outta sight. Score 5.0 as nostalgia rules! (Speaking of rules, the rule was that during the transition from Foreplay to Long Time, as the buildup intensifies one would inhale and hold. Then when the tune drops on the drums and guitar one would exhale. Rules are important in maintaining social peace and tranquility.)

PLEASE DO MARS VOLTA! It's a recent prog rock + post punk band. They have in general a complex sound that is also intuitive because it is very fun for the most part. I would recommend "Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus" because of less weirdness (watch for the sudden spike on the volume around 45 seconds and the 3 minutes of just "random" noises at the end), or if you want crazy awesome and frenetic production go for "Tetragrammaton". OR, for smaller song, maybe "Roulette Dares (the Haunt Of)" or something from it's album, with simpler production but still awesome.

I debated mentioning the sound quality of the music. Yeah, the mids and trebles were seriously attenuated.....especially the tasty cymbal work. But it was good ENOUGH and *I* know the song WELL enough that, in the end, I just enjoyed watching you guys discovering (if that's the word) music that I've known and loved for-damned-near-ever. Epic tune!

I don't know about the rest of the English-speaking world in the mid-80s, but where I went to high school it was called "progressive rock" and it was a very small list of bands, and Rush was not on it. Rush was the Canadian power trio that blew doors. My friend from back east had to explain what "Prog rock" was to me. "Praawg?" What the hell is that? Oh .... Progressive. Never heard it called that." He was pretty dumbfounded I'd never heard the term "prog". That was about 1996. Anyway, the progressive umbrella gets bigger and bigger. Soon Van Halen will be called progressive. Heard a reactor recently refer to Steely Dan as progressive. No, they're jazz fusion/rock/yacht. Boston progressive? I'll entertain that notion.

    "The whole band...."
The whole band is one guy. Tom Scholz played guitar, bass, keyboards and some drums and mixed the whole thing in his basement. He created tech to make the sound that he wanted. (It still sells today with his name on it. Though he has since sold the company) He couldn't get that sound from a studio and decided to do it all on his own.
He brought in Brad Delp (RIP Mr. Delp) to sing. (One of the greatest voices in rock history) and Sib Hashian to do most of the drumming. Only after the album was released did he form the band that we know today as Boston.
Some will say that this is one of the greatest debut albums ever. I disagree. It's one of the greatest albums EVER. Side to side enjoyable to listen to. Listen to the whole thing. You won't be disappointed.
    Peace

Really. You guys should do something else. If this song doesn't get your blood going, you're permanently damaged. The production value is off the charts, the vocalizing superb, the melody unforgettable, the transitions perfect, lyrics timeless... all arranged into one of the best pure rock songs in history. Off a debut album that still ranks in the top 20 album sales of all time. Guess you had to be there. And compared to all the autotune crap and rap these days....no accounting for taste, I guess. There's 17:46 I'll never get back. :P
