Bergtatt is possibly the best black/folk metal album ever made

Anyone who enjoys Ulver as much as I do is good people.
Death metal to black metal to electronica to pop... they are phenomenal. I think Perdition City has to be my fave, it's so damn chill yet urgent at the same time.
Bergtatt is phenomenal too though, incredibly consistent

This was one of the best things you've featured. Great. 4.4. Reminds me of Angelo Badalamenti, Thought Gang, and Barry Adamson. Love it. It's like a futuristic industrial beatnik jam. I dig it, man.

Thought Gang and Barry Adamson most definitely. Never thought of it that way. I would add Unkle to that list but with a nordic noir type atmosphere that is distinctively Scandinavian.

Perdition City has been one of my favourite albums for like 15 years. It just has this excellent dark mood. It always felt kind of like a soundtrack to me, like something from a modern film noir with rainy dark streets. The only other Ulver album that even comes close to this, at least for me, is Shadows of the Sun (although I do like Blood Inside as well)

Yeah, well it does say "Music to an interior film" on the cover.
The rainy night in the city feel is definitely brought out by the sax.

Reminds me of some of Messiaen's work. Although the work is a lot longer, Turangalila-Symphonie gives me a similar feeling to this, as does (although the composition is vastly different) Quartet for the End of Time. I'd also throw in, although it's far less experimental, the prelude to Lohengrin by Wagner, which has a similarly disquieting, but moving feel.
    Really nice work. 4.3.

If you want to discuss musical evolution/changes, I highly recommend doing a run through Green Carnations discog. ESPECIALLY, their first demk and Light of Day Day of Darkness, followed by the Acoustic verses. Its such a wild ride of genres and musical song writing techniques.
As well Anathema, where with A Natural Disaster they stepped away from Doom and wholly embraced progressive.
As for Perditjon City. This album has been an absolute favorite for over 2 decades. ❤

Oh holy hell, you nailed it! Big chunks of plastic. The atonality and mixing also reminds of early Amon Tobin (one for JPMP to give a listen to if they haven't already - I'd recommend 1998's work, Permutation - any track will do)
    Regards,

Speaking to changes in musical taste over time, the bands all change as well. Most old school favorites of mine changed for the worse over time, but some have evolved well to my ears. Dynamic bands whose sound changes with each LP are rare. Extreme examples include Ministry "Effigy" to "Stigmata". New Order is classic... "In a Lonely Place" to "Round and Round ". The Beatles changed extremely as well. The Cure "One Hundred Years" to "The Caterpillar " is extreme. Genesis HAD to change due to losing band members. Some bands change just because they're so good and desire to do something different. And artist who leave bands and sound different solo like Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins from Genesis or Sting from The Police, I could go on all night. It's fun to ponder.

I liked, but it scared my 🐕 (subwoofer shook my windows). Prefer Bass Communion’s ambience.
Joe Jackson went from punk to ska to jazz then big band! In the course of Four albums. Music was so good, I went along for the ride. His big band album, which I forget the name, is a blast!
