That was cool, kinda funky, reminds me of a song by I can't put my finger on it. This song for me is a 4.0. Good Choice.
In keeping with Pete's theoretical essay on music and sharing knowledge. I was thinking about how to open up the fretboard for guitar players. I don't know how far along Manny is with understanding the fretboard but maybe this will help his understanding the guitar better. Bare in mind, I'm self taught and this is my perception and view of the fretboard. I'm sure there will be people that see it differently.
How well do you know the fretboard?
Back in the day, one problem I had was soloing within a chord progression, like the pros do it. I was content to just solo in the key. But I found that boring and my playing really didn't sound great, just ok. I heard of the C.A.G.E.D system and triads but never really dove into it. Until one day my buddy stated, it really isn't that complicated. All the caged system is the 5 pentatonic positions for each open chord shape, C, A, G, E, D... hence the word CAGED.
Example: The pentatonic scale in the first position, which everyone who plays guitar knows, is based on the G open chord shape. So if I was playing in the Key of C or Am, that pentatonic position 1 would start on the 5th fret A. This is my G shape pentatonic in A, playing in the key of C or Am. On either side of my first position pentatonic is my chord shape A pentatonic and chord shape E pentatonic. Thus far you have three positions of the pentatonic based on the chord shapes of A,G, and E. If I move past the E chord shape Pentatonic you get the D chord shaped pentatonic and before the A shaped pentatonic you have the C shape. Therefore, the pattern will always be the same in that order spelling CAGED. I know it sounds long winded but this is a huge aspect of of paying rhythm and lead at the same time.
The other aspect is knowing your triads and movable chords. The movable one's you should know most already, but the triads in conjunction with the CAGED system and movable chords will take you to a new level of guitar playing.
Example: In the E shaped pentatonic on the bottom strings (GBE), you have a shape that looks like a house and consists of 5 notes. Everyone knows this shape. Would you believe there are 3 triads/chords just in the little box of 5 notes. You have the 1st (key/tonic), the 4th and the relative minor. I suggest learning the triads shapes on the GBE strings first. You already know two of them, the D and Dm. This information will take time to process and it will frustrate you in the beginning but stick with it and before you know it you'll see the fretboard differently. Once you know the shapes of the triads, use them in conjunction with the movable chords and CAGED system in a chord progression and solo in between chords.
My suggestion is to start with a simple chord progress like C, G, Am, F. Play the chord and use the CAGED system to do a mini riff to advance to the next chord. Try and stay in the same area you are playing. Example, start with the open chords once around the progression, then move to the bar chords and triads as you move down the fretboard. This was my eureka moment that opened up the fretboard, hopefully it works for you.

Wow Dukes. I'll be honest and say I understand none of it (esp. since I'm no guitarist), but it was a very interesting read about the "CAGED" system. Appreciate you sharing that.

@@jpmp1201 I wrote it mostly for Manny, and I'm sure he understood most of it. Like I said, I don't know how far along he advanced on the guitar, before he stopped playing but if he loves playing, unlocking the fretboard is huge. On a separate note, Justin, you used to play bass, so everything I said applies to you as well, if you ever decide to pick up the bass again.

Found your channel after discovering this gem myself recently. I've been diving into 60's and 70's music and I'm loving every minute of it. It's made me realise that a lot of the music I really enjoyed during my childhood in the 90's has it's origin in those early years. I was very much into hiphop back then and the samples are all coming back in their original form. I'm surprised you guys didn't get the Eminem/Dre link, but then again I don't know your musical history. Anyway, fun channel! Really enjoyed it and if you guys don't know it yet listen to Cissy Strut by The Meters!

@@daved2352 Let me (potentially) blow your mind more: The reason they did those other type of songs is because they believed British folk music was moribund and no longer a truly living genre and needed to be. Those songs are all attempts to make contemporary (for the time) songs that reflected the voice of the British working class, sort of like how Country is a still viable genre in the US.
Chas and Dave might be two of the most musically and creatively brilliant artists of the 20th century, despite how weird it is to write that. 😀

there is no point trying to predict how music will be regarded in the future. In the 80s I liked metal , and hated most pop music , but have nostalgia for it now because it reminds me of my youth. I only stumbled upon Labi siffre because I liked his cover of it must be love by Madness. I did not know it was them who covered it and he wrote it, nor did i realise he is English ,and had a huge influence on rap and hiphop .

I always wondered if Eminem ever paid or even gave credit to Labi Siffre.....th-cam.com/video/sNPnbI1arSE/w-d-xo.html

Why are you surprised this is 1975? Because it sounds like modern music?

The violin solo in the end makes me think of the sonic games. And comparing Michael Buble to this isnt good. You're comparing him basically with a coverband. Thats what i see Michael Buble do al the time. Even Eddie Murphy with party all the time is more original.

Great song, 4.5. Funk meets jazz meets progressive rock. Timeless but not popular in its time (didn’t fit into a box). Back in the day the music you listened to formed a lot of your identity. The clothes you wore, your hairstyle, your political views, the safety pin 🧷 through your cheek. Music as a lifestyle and a battleground. Hundreds of English kids died in fights between Mods and Rockers in the 60’s. Point being...music imho is not as important now as it was then, not as tied into the everyday fabric of our lives, for better or worse.

I agree to an extent. Its not as interwoven into the mainstream as it may have used to be because of the digital age as well as more technological distractions. Before you would express yourself and your frustrations through music, now you can just do it in a twitter post.
