Tomb Raider The Dagger Of Xian is an action-adventure platform game developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive. It was released in 1997 for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation as part of the Tomb Raider series and the sequel to the 1996 video game Tomb Raider. It was ported to Mac OS in 1998 and an expansion pack,It is remake fan version of Tomb Raider 2 Remake
The gameplay of Tomb Raider II builds upon the basic set up of the original game. Innovations in Tomb Raider II include new weapons, extra moves, and a set of vehicles. The crystal saving feature on the PlayStation version was eliminated, and instead the player may save at any time like in the PC version, save for a few special locations.
Lara can climb both horizontally and vertically[6] and perform a mid-air roll used to land facing in the opposite direction. The range of weapons has been expanded to include a harpoon gun,[7] a grenade launcher, an M16 rifle (which requires Lara to assume an aiming stance to fire), and automatic pistols, which replace the magnums from Tomb Raider. The inventory includes pyrotechnic flares, which are used to light up dark corners.[8] The two vehicles are a motorboat in Venice and a snowmobile in Tibet. Both are used to travel long distances across the map and can speed up on ramps or run over enemies.

This is honestly how I remember seeing Anniversary as a kid, I miss the old games where is was all about just exploring, and soaking in the ambience of a location that hasn't been touched by human life in hundreds/thousands of years. I liked the new trilogy, but I would give that up in a heartbeat for a new tr game like this
Exactly! The new TR games have become AAA stealth shooters and put exploration into the backseat. I miss the days when TR games had a sense of isolation, grandeur and mystique. I miss how those games begged the player to explore ruins and tombs untouched by civilization for centuries.
Anniversary is pretty fresh game. I played the very first Tomb Raider as a kid. ;p

Such a great game and I’m always gonna prefer this Lara then the today’s Lara. This one looks more exploring and connected rather then today’s one. Today’s games are now much predictable then the older ones. When I use to play these old TRs i never knew where I’m going and which items I’m gonna find. Love the exploring map in this. I wish we get this as full game. I’m definitely gonna play this.

I mean... The textures may not be as detailed, not as advanced lighting and post processing and whatnot but Anniversary does look a lot like this game.
This is incredible. This is why I enjoy remakes. Tomb Raider 2 was my favorite Tomb Raider game back in the day, and seeing even part of it remade this well makes me want the full game. It was a great game and deserves to a full remake.
This is what I like about old tomb Raider games the gameplay is so soothing it's like meditation, whereas new tomb Raider games are more fast paced , action based, old tomb Raider game soundtracks are also very meditative, With reboot the tomb Raider games lost its meditative value.

You guys are high lol. It was blurry texture where sometimes I couldn't find the paths in the caves. Still loved it, 2 and 3 are the only ones I beat back then, skipped the rest till the remakes
They really should remake all of them with Anniversary’s mechanics and Keeley Hawes voice. Anniversary’s gameplay was so smoothe. I was so disappointed with Underworlds maneuvers when it came out.
You probably played the Anniversary edition growing up. I played this game back in the day and I never expected the graphics to look like this.

I always loved the methodology or concept of this Tomb Raider. I could spend hours playing and looking for a way to pass the screens. It has nothing to do with current games and it is a real pleasure to see that there are those who understood it the same way. Very good work! If the game comes out I will be happy to buy it without a doubt
Now THIS is TOMB RAIDER!!! These people need to take over the franchise and the creators of TR now… need to take HARD NOTES on how to maintain the integrity of a franchise and character while creating something familiar, fresh and new all at the same time. Beautiful work, beautiful game… this was my favorite game and I hope that you guys finish it!!!

Rockstar didn't do it, it was Grove Street Games.
They were just cheap remasters, this is a full remake.
They're not the original games, there were 3 GTA games before them.
This is one level of a single, much smaller game, which has taken several years and still isn't finished (not to mention the other levels have barely seen any work), vs. 3 open world games.

Because they don't have to deal with management, not all devs are shit, they're always shipping things that are not fully done, that's due to publishers. Rockstar has notable troubled development on all their games, look up Max Payne 3 and RDR1 just to name a couple. If they didn't have a good relationship with TAKE-2, we would have broken and unfinished versions of them too. Grove Street Games (not rockstar) are inexperienced and also ran out of time, not only that things change quickly, people have no say in the matter, no artist or programmer wants to release incomplete work, but it's not their choice to make. Fan made and modders don't have management constraints. Sometimes it has nothing to do with skill at all, otherwise they wouldn't get hired or survive in probably the most volatile entertainment industry.

This brings back memories of my younger brother and I playing this game together, literally as one. Both of us using the same keyboard at once to play/control Lara Croft; one would do the movements and the other the, shooting etc. Amazing times.

This game was actually also a part of my childhood of Tomb Raider, I remember playing this remake right after Underworld and I have always thought that it was an official game. This looks so stunning for a fanmade game and I can't believe I found it again, thank you!

When something is done by "FANS" and not by companys that become greedy, either by changes in the owners or some other reason, imediatelly we see the difference, like i know this is a Fan made, but even if this was the first time seeing this video, just by the camera and character angle and the way it moves, the graphics and quality is way better, but the game is the same, you can see Tomb Raider II here, this is so good.

I cannot tell you how much I LOVE this!! Oh my goodness.. what I wouldn't give to have the first 4 Tomb Raiders given a beautiful makeover like this. Nothing against the new Tomb Raider games but this will always be THE definitive version of Lara to me. The look, the teal tank top, boots & dual pistols is so iconic.

This looks absolutely stunning. I love how they portrayed Lara here, they kept that sort of cartoony look from the original games as opposed to the realistic, gritty look from the recent trilogies. To me this is what TR should look like. Fantastic job!
Idk, i totally prefer the look of the trilogy, and I absolutely love the sharp, realistic graphics, and how Lara looks, but everyone has their opinion.

I've play my first Tomb Raider 1 on PSone in '96. And still in love with Tomb Raider. This remake is that what I've called Tomb Raider. I love this remake so much!
I spent so many hours playing the original. It feels like a dream watching this remake. I have been an arcade junkie since the 70's and I really don't care for the ultra-realistic look of the newer games. Every single aspect of this is incredible. Level design, picture details, game-play, music, lighting and so much more. Ridiculously good work! Just wish I could play this!
agreeing fully, until it comes to gameplay... because this is something that plagues almost ALL modern games; They have become self-playing over time. movement isn't fun because the player is not truly in control of the character anymore. These days the character follows a pre-determined path, You issue commands to your characters, that will ultimately lock them onto the next step in a sequence, if you die it doesn't feel like it's your fault, but rather that the game wasn't clear enough where the path went. Back in the days, you had to measure distance, learn how far Lara could jump, and the level design and platform distances were optimized by a somewhat boxy preset design. If you failed the jump, it was actually your own fault, because you either misjudged the distance, or didn't time your jump right. Seeing the climbing here is just like "why am I doing this? is this even fun gameplay?"... And it's not really a fault of this wonderful remake, but rather something that plagues the industry as a whole. traversal should be fun, but we have forgotten about that in games.
@@PixelShade dont forget that a game like lara croft cost milions of dollars and there is a hole big company of skilled developers to make such game ....comparing to this 1 guy with proly no budget working from his computer with free assets and Unreal engine :) ...i know this feeling because i started this jorney too (from scratch with youtube tutorials and is not easy :) (but yea gotch ya) anyways congratz to the maker of this (big fan of tomb raider, prince of persia :p)
@@MaxStudioCG2023 I mean, I'm a game developer myself so I know how hard it is, and how much work that is required. Don't get me wrong this is seriously impressive! it's just when it comes to game mechanics it is often a design choice. Relying more on template boxes for level design and keep the character's movement more free isn't necessarily harder to do than what has been currently implemented. But yeah, ultimately I'm just an old dude who misses the time when we were actually in control of characters in-game. Not issuing out commands and the character responds with a delay while following a pre-determined path, as is usually the case in modern AAA productions. (it's one of the reasons I don't play AAA games anymore)

I totally agree with you. I would love it if they had went with this design instead. This would contrast a lot to the original version. Even the sound effects feel more fresh and new here.

this is a remake from the ground up, the remasters are just upscaled ports of the originals with better textures

Umm of course the graphics would...the old TR games came out in 1996 and UE5 came out in 2022. Graphics engines have got a lot better in the last 20 years.

I like how it captures the bright colourful tone of the original while also retaining that air of danger that comes from knowing their could be anything right around the corner in these ancient places Lara is exploring.
Its fun, but tense at the same time.

Beautiful. I loved TR I+II. I can hardly believe it's now over 25 years ago when Lara and I jumped across these caves together.
So refreshing to see a game that doesn't tell you where to go with luminous green creeping vines or flashing areas. Modern games are just cut-scenes linked together with a linear hand-holding 'game'.
Gaming got bigger from those old days. Now games get tested alot of by QA and play testers and when they get data that players get stuck or frustrated cuz they dont know where to go or what to do on certain parts. So they just added these glowing "waypoints". I prefer the oldschool way my self but I get why it changed to be more acceptable for bigger audience.
@@NaxHiri Yeah, and the crazy thing is, I still found Crystal Dynamic's, Legend and Anniversary to be quite easy in it's level design and gameplay (as compared to the originals); which I presume this Remake is based off of. Never got around to playing the Second game. Hope it lives up to the original!

@@jordanb1390 What prequel trilogy? The reboots are their own thing, they aren't related to the first six games (Anniversary, despite being a remake of TM, is part of the first reboot).
@@FuyuNoAi I always thought tomb Raider 1 to 3 it’s a different universe from TR last revelation, chronicles and AOD. And so it’s the TR Anniversary trilogy and so this last reboot.

Infelizmente, não. É muito trabalho para uma pessoa só, o Nicobass (o criador) nem tem certeza se vai refazer o jogo completo. Mas ao menos a Lara's Home ele ainda vai finalizar.
Ah, e já que estamos falando disso, recomendo muito checar o canal do Julian Guba (FreakRaider). Ele tá fazendo um remake belíssimo do Angel of Darkness na Unreal Engine 4. Tá incrível de verdade, e ele pretende refazer o jogo todo!

A remake is when someone redoes a portion on a better engine, which this is, cuz the guy only redid a portion of the game, not the whole thing, cuz he's not the owner of TR
@@alwaysmymazda sorry, but you definition is shit....a remaster is basically just a polished version with higher resolution or such shenanigans. you can quite nice explain it with the RE series. There was Resident Evil 0 and 1 which both got a HD Remaster Version in the early 2000`s, higher quality textures, better character model etc... the RE:2 and RE:3-Nemesis versions that came out 2 or 3 years ago are contrary to that real remakes cause the game was rebuild from scratch on another platform / with another engine...also the camera perspective was modded which is totally legit in a remake - never in a remastered version. The whole thing has nothing to do with ownership and /or only parts of a game being refurbished...."Tomb Raider Anniversary" is another example for a remake done well. Takes motives of the old game (Tomb Raider 1) and changes certain mechanics to up-to-date standards (e.g. often done with controls) or modifies a riddle or a smaller section of a level here and there but stays true to the feel or atmosphere of the original. The other way to do it is like it was done with the LucasArts games or Diablo 2 where you can press a key anywhere in the game and it switches back to the original gfx. I like that feature most in remade versions.
And to sum the whole definition game up: a REBOOT is what Square Enix did with the 3 Tomb Raider games in the 2010s (i.e. Rise of the TR, Shadow of the TR etc - you get it).
There you have it: the big 3 of reanimating old(er) games or even whole IPs ...

I love how they are using Keeley Hawes voice from the Legend games for the grunts and screams. Absolutely love her she voiced Lara perfectly.

Entering a new area, massive vistas, just the unique to this game excitement and adventure of exploring. This is what Tomb Raider is all about. There is still a hunger for this old school type of Lara, as is evidenced by the many comments in this thread. Anniversary proved, that Fans will certainly pay for an updated game that RESPECTS the source material! Well done!!

When you were young you just accepted everything games threw at you... Now the first thought that comes to mind is "wouldn't it have been easier for the helicopter to drop her down on the wall instead of flying over it, dropping her into a cave, only so that she can make her way up onto the wall?" :)

An official remake would have to oblige to the market (and the outcome would probably be as undesirable as those silly Tomb Raider reboots). Better to have an independent developer do it.

This looks amazing. One of the most flawless fan projects I've ever seen.
I really miss OG Lara. I like the idea of modernizing her and making her feel more like a real, vulnerable person than an abstract sex object, but I feel like the newer games have actually stripped her of her personality and made her more of a generic game protagonist. She used to be so intelligent, witty, and confident.
The earlier games were more lighthearted and willing to have fun. And they had way more to do with the mysteries of whatever culture she was investigating, rather than boring plots surrounding evil paramilitary groups.
She wasn't an Abstract sex object before. That's on you.

This looks incredible. Seems like it's not only a graphics overhaul, but also implements the improved controls from the first reboot, before the went full Uncharted with the crappy latest trilogy. Would be fantastic to see the full game.
They never went full Uncharted. Uncharted is like Call of Duty compared to the last 3 TR games.
