    There is just one week until Kate Mercer's forty-fifth wedding anniversary and the planning for the party is going well. But then a letter arrives for her husband. The body of his first love has been discovered, frozen and preserved in the icy glaciers of the Swiss Alps. I loved the ending; reminded me of the devastating last shot of Lesley Manville in Mike Leigh's 'Another Year'. Slow and steady, and I agree with Christy - a masterclass of acting.

      daveinprogress3 loved Another Year and the last shot of Lesley was so sad. Her mask is gone (always was or for us the viewer I'm not sure) and her life will go on this way.

    Loved Ben's imagery - "let's go, get up the stairs faster" "gitty-up, slap on the back, move along, you're making a movie," "I want this to be the Affair's parents." Good contrast to the other panelists.

    Can always count on Ben for the regular guy response to a movie. Which is high praise in my book ... movie reviewers as a general rule have a hard time keeping that regular guy hat on ... because they spend too much time watching and thinking about movies.

      i dont want to Sound like an asshole, but the regular movie-goer has no idea what makes a movie good, great or better.he has no idea about artistic value. the " regular" loves watching superhero movies and Star wars,because there is always Action going on and there is no Personal involvement ( not saying those kinda movies are bad, they arent). i agree that Reviews should have this voice as well, but that doesnt represent what a movie can do and what cinema can be.

      Zaraerae Smith if you turn on the closed captioning and really pay attention to the lyrics of the final song that is playing while Kate and Geoff are dancing, the lyrics mirror the way that Geoff TRULY feels...that Geoff lost his true love long ago, the woman that he really REALLY loved. Or at least from Kate's behavior as she listens to the song, thats certainly what she is thinking and its pretty devastating to her. At least that's the interpretation that made sense to me.

      @aureliaansah1462 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just saw it for the first time the other day. I had the subtitles on too, & I thought the same. It would be something if he specifically picked that song for their first dance 45 years ago, but I think it was randomly played. Do you think he killed the girlfriend?

    • @K_Woods
      @K_Woods 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aurelia Ansah personally, i dont think he killed her. We're so used to that being the "twist" in movies, i was kinda expecting that to be the case too 😊. But no, i think she died just how he described....girl basically fell down a hole.

    • @rivinish

      Wow, didn't even think about it. I thought the ending was just her wanting to leave her husband

    • @JacksonAndrea97
      @JacksonAndrea97 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We’ve got no reason to think he killed her. She fell and died, and he obviously loved her dearly. The heartbreaking part about the movie isn’t that the wife realizes she’s married to a murderer but that she’s married to a man who never loved her like she thought he did... married to a man she doesn’t even know. The significance of the girlfriend from the past having fallen into an ice cave means that she’s perfectly preserved by the ice... and that makes it impossible for the husband to ignore... which makes it impossible for the wife to bare.

    • @MrChaseBlue
      @MrChaseBlue 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh god. sure, you can interpret it that way, but that’s an easy out, so I don’t think that’s what the filmmaker intended. He wants the audience to be plunged into a deep moral crisis that Kate and Geoff are encountering

      Hi. May I ask you if YOU are married? What would YOUR feelings be if you discovered that YOUR marriage partner had ALWAYS secretly longed for his or her dead fiance? Would YOU be happy to know that you have only ever been second choice? And that the reason your marriage partner always keeps his or her eyes closed when making love with you is because he or she is thinking of someone else? Would YOU be happy to know that the reason that your marriage partner never wanted children with YOU is because he or she only wanted the child that their dead lover could give them? If you can HONESTLY say that you would STILL be happy to be married to someone after knowing all of this, then you are a better person than me.

      +peachpetals *SPOILER* The two leads are celebrating their 45th Anniversary with a lavish party at a swanky ballroom with their friends. They have a dance in front of everyone through all of "Smoke In Your Eyes" and you see Charlotte Rampling's character progressively lose her facade and realize that everything has changed in their relationship between her and her husband, that she knows too much to not let it affect her anymore even after the heartwarming speech he had given her earlier. When the music crescendoes, she finally cracks as she lets go of him and starts tearing up for the first time in the entire film, but everyone else is too busy raising their arms up having a good time to notice her distraught, indicating she feels lonelier than ever even with her closest friends packed around her as she has bottled everything up. Both of them are cloaked in a tellingly shade of blue as the spotlight on the dance floor.
      Such a masterful scene and one of the best endings of any recent film imo.

    • @MarthaMcCrum
      @MarthaMcCrum 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is she going to leave him? That's what I thought it meant-the last scene. Her life with him was a lie and she was just a replacement for Katia. I took the last scene to mean when she let go that eventually she will leave him, after 45 years. (

    • @MrChaseBlue
      @MrChaseBlue 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Tristan Abraham bc many of his points betray his lack of film knowledge. The fact that he states that he distrusts films that are beautiful, for one, in another review reveals that he does not belong as a film critic or on this table frankly. He also states how he wanted this to be a TV show instead. Well, this is a frickin' film. He should just stick to reviewing TV instead and let film critics do film.

    • @SteMail926
      @SteMail926 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ben gave boyhood a nine, and then back pedalled and said he thought it was boring and that he only praised it because he thought he had to. That's kind of the definition of reviewing out of principle, and shows him to be a flimsy reviewer sometimes. Not hating, he always brings insightful opinions, but he's frustrating in how he comes to his conclusions. All subjective, obviously.

      +Davin Yu He presents films on TCM. He has a large knowledge of older more realistic films. And films of the "golden era" and "new hollywood" era of film, so I think he can call a movie boring. There are some he likes that many would consider boring.

    • @CarSVernon
      @CarSVernon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Davin Yu I don't think that not liking a movie ending betrays anyone's lack of film knowledge specifically. Endings ruin movies often, for a lot of people regardless of their film knowledge. Most recent example= Birdman.

    • @MrChaseBlue
      @MrChaseBlue 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CarSVernon uhhh that is not why I think Ben is ignorant of film knowledge and history, nor did I list that as one of the reasons.There are so many reasons why that are littered in his critique of this film as well as other indie/arthouse films.
      I could care less that he didn't care for the ending. But for what my money is worth, it is one of the great ambiguous and heartbreaking endings of any film in recent history, so to say that he didn't like it because it lacks clarity is dumb imo. It is also besides the point as it doesn't matter if charlotte rambling's character is going to stay with him or not. Everything has changed for her and it's never going to be the same again as everything in her relationship to his is in question in terms of its authenticity.

So, her husband was in love with someone else before he met her. Someone he rarely spoke about... so what? I found myself despising her for creating a problem and even a little jealous that her life had been so wonderful that not being his 1st love, after 45 years of marriage, bothered her. Sara Wilkinson Thank you so much for taking the time to write this well-thought-out reply. I will definitely watch the movie again! You know, I noticed Katya had her hand on her belly in the picture, but I thought it was my imagination that she might be pregnant.. at some point I decided that she was pregnant and, the twist was, that he had killed her because of it and was obsessed with her as her murderer . Perhaps I was too convinced of all that to truly empathize with Kate. That combined with the idea that Katya was only worshiped because she DID die and, had she lived, their marriage would have been like most others. The point is that Geoff did not understand that. Thanks again
