    I will never forget the final scene. Kate (Charlotte Rampling) is beyond devastated. The pain and grief on her face is mesmerising and I have to say that this film stayed with me long after I had watched it.

      Unreal ... Big print subtitles smack in the middle of this piece ... hiding the actor's faces! ... SERIOUSLY???

    I discovered this movie on Netflix and I've watched it about 6 or 8 times now. It's truly haunting and heart wrenching and painful and I can't describe what it is, but I don't need to. I'm really glad to have found the film and to now have seen this interview. I highly recommend this movie. Hurry before Netflix takes it off!

    Wow! When I saw the movie, itreminded me on the Francois Ozon movie, too! Not only the tone of the movie & Rampling's nuanced beautiful acting, but also the relationship between Rampling & the young talented director.

    People say that it doesn't affect their relationship because he truly loved someone else but they don't seem to understand that there are some details that show he didn't love Kate nearly enough, anywhere near as much or as deeply as he loved Katya. Imagine finding out that your partner of 45 years had been in love with someone else all those years. Spoiler alert .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
    Some of these things really taint the relationship: the fact that Katya was pregnant before she died when they have never had children, the sex scene where he can't keep his erection when she asks him to look at her (raising the horrific idea that everytime they had sex he was closing his eyes and picturing Katya), not to mention how deeply he is grieving for someone who he is with so many years ago, he was considering going all the way to Switzerland to see her body and like Kate says he wouldn't even walk with her from time to time. Even at the end when she pulled her hand away from his, he didn't even notice!

      Thank you!! I just watched the movie and I think that if one of the people in a relationship truly loves somebody else, it will always affect the relationship. Even if that person is dead. The tragedy is that for 45 years Kate truly believed that he loved her as much as she loves him, and now it becomes clear that actually, he didn't and doesn't.
      I know people don't take this as seriously as if he had had an affair, but in reality it is a life long lie. I think it must have been obvious to Kate that he didn't love her quite in the same way she loved him, but she must have thought that that's just the way he loves - less touchy etc. But then she finds out that it's actually because he just didn't love her as deeply.
      I think it's serious. It's a big deception

      @@Ella-rx2vm Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Interesting that this seemingly simple film yields such different interpretations. My understanding was that receiving that letter meant as much of a sudden eruption of memories and emotions from the past for him as his reaction was disturbing for her. He was clearly upset and angry that fate had forced him to reopen a chapter of his life that he had tried to keep closed. I mean, what was he supposed to do, having lost a partner he had truly loved while barely in his twenties (?) ... Should he have become a hermit for the rest of his life? I think he tried his best to continue living a decent life, loving again (I think he did, truly), and also honouring his deceased partner's memory somehow (i.e. by keeping those pictures and "memorabilia"). The ideal of one true love in a life is nice, but it's simply not how things always go. Also, I don't think they have had a bad marriage up to this point (some ups and downs aside). We do not know the reason why the don't have children.

      You are absolutely right ..people assume that when you are older , you stop feeling emotions but it's not true ..you crave emotions longing envy as same as when you were younger .
      It also provide commentary on monogamy and human nature ...
      It's very human nature that when you are in monogamous relationship, you expect as your rights , their love only for yourself and when you don't get it or you have to share it with their past , you feel betrayed , you don't feel good ...whether you claim , you don't care about their past but it's will always be there

    I wouldn't be upset if my husband was in true love with another, once. N body belongs to the other. The fact that he didn't leave his wife knowing he truly loved another shows that marriage is more than what others think. At that age you know that in a pin drop of time you will be separated by death. Till death do you part. I call this marriage of earth. True love is not known here.

      I think Geoff will still be staying with Kate because he knows she is the most suitable person alive for him although his love for Kate will never surpass that for Katsy. At their anniversary party, he said people tend to not make big decisions as they grow older and that means he will not be willing to separate from Kate. Kate may also stay in this relationship but she will be well aware that to Geoff, she is never the love of his life.

    • @Ro11311
      @Ro11311 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not just that he loved someone else once. It was his complete obsession with Katia which affected his and Kate's marriage and life...Spraying Katia's perfume around the house, hiding the fact that she was pregnant, closing his eyes when being intimate with Kate and losing "the mood" when she asked him to open his eyes. He didn't seem able to live in the present because of his Katia obsession, even still calling her "my Katia".

    I am disappointed. The finish with that song is very cheesy and on the nose. The husband's point of view could be much more interesting and genuine and critical, but instead this is just about boring middle-class life, its pettiness and bitterness and phony happiness.

    • @TheMrMYoung
      @TheMrMYoung 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +Joe Joey I think the finish with the song is what made the scene so great. It took on a totally different meaning for Kate (Rampling) after the week's revelations, and really showed how much it will haunt her for the rest of the marriage.

    • @joejoey8889
      @joejoey8889 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I understand that, that is exactly why it is more like a cheesy high-school drama. Actually if you think about it, Kate is really a very empty boring character, the film is also significantly lack of intellectual substance.

    • @jadesmith7885
      @jadesmith7885 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      +Joe Joey Hi Joe. I get what you mean, but the genius of this film is in its understatement. Imagine that you are a Woman (or a Man) and you discover after 45 years of marriage that your other half has never really been in love with you and has in fact been pining for a long-lost love. Devastating!

    • @joejoey8889
      @joejoey8889 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jade Smith Yes, the marriage/betrayal theme is universal and more related to general female audience. But there is no real subtlety or understatement of complexity in it, and the form/style of the film is hardly an understatement either, remember its cheap suspense/horror elements, the chick-flick emotional finish? That is more like screaming at your face and yelling at you, "oh, see how conventional we are!". And about devastating, imagine if you were a woman who betrayed your lost love, betrayed your idealism in the late 60s, your passion of youth, and married into a boring petty middle-class family man for 45 years, then one day, you were awakened by a mail and realized your life had been a total waste of time, wouldn't that be much much more devastating?! That kind of substance + understatement in style and complexities in details would certainly be a much better film.

    • @jadesmith7885
      @jadesmith7885 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Joe Joey Hi Joe, and yes....I absolutely agree with you. She is devastated because she realizes that her entire life has been a waste of time.......she gave up everything for this Man.......she doesn't even have any children.....and now she discovers that he was never really in love with her at all.........
