I loved this movie and I needed to watch a serious discussion about the film by people who at least respect what they are doing...and obviously I got here by mistake..
The fact that Haneke created such a beautiful movie with few actors and filmed in a small apartment with a deep and raw screenplay shows that he is truly a genius. I give it a 10.
Isn´t it also supposed to be slow and boring? Imagine this movie described as thrilling, action-packed, racy, hectic, wild, lively and exciting. This is just right.
He fell asleep watching one of the greatest living filmmakers... and I should care for his opinion on anything? No thanks. These people need to stick to reviewing popcorn movies and leave serious cinema for serious people.
I LOVED this movie. I went through a very similar situation with my dad a few years ago, so I really related with it. I don't know what they're talking about. I didn't find this movie to be slow at all. I was riveted from start to finish. Amour is an incredible film.
Seriously, I don't get people saying stuff like 'it's slow, so it will get less ratings from me', really ?? The subject matter of the film is sometimes only conveyed if it is slow, like Drive and 2001, and Haneke's glaciation trilogy. I get you not liking it because its slow, but that should not affect your ratings, if you don't like something was intentional and necessary, that's because you don't like it, not because the film could have been better.
You obviously missed the whole point of the movie. It's called LOVE. Not "Old woman gets sicker by the day". Watch the characters NOT the situation. Worst review ever.
This is easily the most depressing movie I've ever seen, and I mean that as a huge compliment. I was always enthralled as to how masterfully made it was; it's all so minimalist with the huge use of static shots throughout and amazing acting. It's so well-paced and never, EVER, did I ever think that any actions were theatrical or unrealistic. The film has now carved itself into my mind and refuses to leave. 9.5/10, amazing, two thumbs ups, etc.
Every once in a while I watch a movie that floored me and i look for the reviews on it. Chances are these guys did one, and sure enough...it brought me back to them...And every damn time there's the same dude i agree with and the rest have the attention spans of a goldfish
The definition of a movie is a story told through the medium of Visual moving images. I don't understand how you cannot see that this movie has a thought provoking and theme driven story line. I would be curious to hear what you believe qualifies a movie to be a movie, that is different to what Amour displays?
@zirku12 I really enjoyed The Intouchables, but there is no way Amour will lose in the foreign category if it's the only one in that category to be nominated for best picture
Real critics don't fall asleep half way through a movie and then review it. That's ridiculous. Our standards sure have lowered since Roger Eberts hayday.
I really wasn't all that bored with the film. Haneke just brought me In on there lives until the very end. And Riva gives one of the best performances I've ever seen. 8.5
Palme d'Or doesn't mean much and I'm glad that these guys don't seem to be influenced by it. It's also hard to give more in depth criticism without spoiling anything. These reviews do generally give you a good idea of what you're about to go see though.
Christy gave it a 6 but she also predicted it to win the oscar. Oscars are so easy to predict it's ridiculous. The Best Picture award really shouldn't affect anyone's opinion of a movie. It's just opinions after all.
"I fell asleep for half the movie" "I was bored ishless" "I was confused" Really? Sure, you can say it's a very slow movie. However, two great actors give absolutely amazing performances and carry the entire movie. If you're getting paid to watch movies, this alone should keep you entertained. Add the fact that there are no heros/antiheroes/villains in this movie and you're blessed in being a voyeur for this particular movie. And that other guy is acting like if a damn timeline will help lmao
As being someone who has gone through a very similar situation as one portrayed in the film I have to agree with you. I did enjoy the film but not as much as most critics. 7 / 10
It was slow but I think it was a good movie overall. The slow shots and lingering I felt was to create a feeling. This movie makes you think about your life and aging. I give it a 8.5
On another level that no movies this year come close to approaching. Holy Motors is an art film because it really has no plot or story and it's experimental to the max
I find art films are more often than not terribly flawed at times, while hinting occasionally at strokes of genius. That is what I saw in "The Master", which is considerably weak storytelling overall. While I can appreciate more artsy films, sometimes straightforward stories work much better.
Anyone who has experienced the conflict this movie portrays in their life could easily just have filmed, in a documentary sense, the process of their loved one's mental deterioration and have had a mirroring image of this movie. This movie is not a movie but more of a documentary in my eyes. Problem for me was that you don't need a documentary to show you what you already know (more or less. . .). Especially one paced like this. Once again, I got tricked by critics into believing the hype.
You usually don't answer on youtube, but I'm gonna ask anyway. Have you seen Haneke's The Time of the Wolf? That is my favorite film from him and one of my favorites ever. I mention it because I thought that was Haneke's most humane film for sure. I'll definitely take a look at Amour though.
why are their eng subs in this review? and why do the eng subs make no fucking sense?? this movie was good although incredibly slow, but i think that gives you an insight into what life is like at that age , the slowest and most arty type movie ive ever seen ,and yet probably the most realistic and truthful aswell
I agree, but if a critic gives movies like Drive, we need to talk about kevin or Amour which on the highest level of arthouse, ratings from 5-7, its kind of cheesy. I got no problem if people don´t like arthouse movies, but as a critic you have to accept that movies aren`t only entertaiment, they are also Art (sorry for bad english)
I wish people would stop calling Amour and The Master art films. As if a movie that requires ANY KIND of extra thought, work and patience is a bad thing. God forbid :P. Those are my two favorite films of the year because it's filmmaking on another jacqui that no other movies this year came close. Not a single aspect falters.
Matt is like... I'm too dumb for this movie. He really shouldn't be a professional film critic. I swear any beginner youtube critic is always way better than him.
Amour is a very simple film that will connect with some a lot stronger than with others. I'm a teenager. I'm not in love and I'm not old, so I didn't relate to it all that much. I admire and respect it's vision, but it's not a film that will stay with me all that long.
Michael Haneke veered away from the usual melodramatic approach (with emotional music on the side, memorable quotes, and tears hovering the screen), and that made all the DIFFERENCE. (Rating: B+)
Some film categories (drama, horror, sci-fi) I seek a European critical response, other film categories, an American critical response (comedy, western). This film is definitely one where a European sensibility strikes at the heart of what does, and does not, make Amour great. The ADD element of Ben's criticism of the pacing is very American. Conversely, Alonso often has the greatest appreciation of European film. Faces Places for instance, a recent film review, he gets it at a level beyond the others.
reminds me of last year , when christy gives "The Artist" 6 points and then it won the oscar :) ; (its very favourite for foreign oscar and might be nominated for best picture )
That's a very true sentiment. I absolutely loved this movie. It told its story wonderfully. However, will I, or you even, watch this movie again? Maybe yes, but more likely no. I'll probably watch it again in the next few months to give it a little breathing room after my initial viewing. But yes, it isn't a film made to be "entertaining", and I did find that to be ok, which I can tell you do to. I appreciate your more measured comment.
This is a powerful movie. However, I recently saw a Canadian movie with a very different view on the struggles of aging. Check out our channel's discussion of "Still Mine".
I don't want to sound like a know it all and a hater. But sometimes Christy really doesn't know what she's talking about. This movie was Amazing. Giving this movie a 6 is a disgrace. Fire her. She's starting to come across as Smug. This is coming from someone who defended her during the whole TDKR death threats fiasco
Amour is a well made movie, great acting, very artistic and oscar worthy. But, the major flaws in this movie is, boring. I mean extremely boring. Ten minutes opening scene of Up is ten time better than this whole movie.... sorry.
You think someone might mention that it won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. This show is very weak film criticism if it can even be called that, but at least it's not yet another review of a lame Hollywood action film.
At least an 8/10,..The woman on here didn't understand the film..wtf is she doing on here,.It was like that for a very good reason, the daughter was selfish and wanted to throw her into a home, she didn't get it..did not like her visit there,.Yes it was powerful, kudo's to the guy in the triangle sweater..he the only guy who got it..It was not boring,.Very bad reviewers, the three..the guy in the sweater should be on his own with reviews..
Yeah! super cereal people like you and moi. I only like movies if the right person tells me to. How dare they have opinions that differ from the norm, we should enforce conformity in are movie critics.
This movie belongs to that category of films that you can't watch twice. Great actors, beautiful camera shots, but in the end fails. A very sad movie that has nothing positive, this is not Amour, it is an interpretation of two narrow minded old people where they believe in a very profane love, just sad ...Amour is a movie where divine nature doesn't exist, this movie has nothing spiritual about it wich is wrong when we are talking about art in a visual medium; extreme and unfiltered reality... In Amour there is no hope...In my opinion this movie represents the atheism in cinematography.
Why do you think it is pretentious? Are yo familiar with any other of Haneke's films? Do you actually just enjoy movies where incredibly muscular men in goofy outfits beat the shit out of each other and cause insane amounts of collateral damage for two hours?
Amour is not a movie. All movies have some sort of conflict albiet internal or external in the plot, but this one has neither. If you had an emotional response with this movie, that's fine. It doesn't make it an actual movie The whole excuse I'm hearing most of you write of that this is an art film and not one with explosions or guns is a tired rebuttal
I loved this movie and I needed to watch a serious discussion about the film by people who at least respect what they are doing...and obviously I got here by mistake..
ikr these people clearley dont know what their talking about
Same Here buddy.... Bunch of Morons
The fact that Haneke created such a beautiful movie with few actors and filmed in a small apartment with a deep and raw screenplay shows that he is truly a genius. I give it a 10.

He fell asleep watching one of the greatest living filmmakers... and I should care for his opinion on anything? No thanks. These people need to stick to reviewing popcorn movies and leave serious cinema for serious people.
No shit
Seems like they didn't understand the film. Especially the woman.
I LOVED this movie. I went through a very similar situation with my dad a few years ago, so I really related with it.
I don't know what they're talking about. I didn't find this movie to be slow at all. I was riveted from start to finish. Amour is an incredible film.
Skip this one and read Roger Ebert' s observant, moving and poetic review about this timeless classic film.
thanks will do
There's hardly any violence in Funny Games that's explicit. I wish people would stop exaggerating.
Haneke will hold a shot like it's a newborn baby.
Seriously, I don't get people saying stuff like 'it's slow, so it will get less ratings from me', really ?? Oh i see, What The Flick?! a channel where Avengers: Endgame is a masterpiece
I'd love to hv seen their review now of this masterpiece after 9 years with bit more maturity in foreign films
A movie is a movie, arthouse, mainstream, grind house, independent, exploitation, popcorn flicks, foreign, all should be judged equally.
The definition of a movie is a story told through the medium of Visual moving images. I don't understand how you cannot see that this movie has a thought provoking and theme driven story line. @zirku12 I really enjoyed The Intouchables, but there is no way Amour will lose in the foreign category if it's the only one in that category to be nominated for best picture
I've seen this. One of the best films of the year. An incredible film.
Real critics don't fall asleep half way through a movie and then review it. That's ridiculous. Our standards sure have lowered since Roger Eberts hayday.

But....he didn't review the film precisely for that fact while readily admitting he fell asleep.
@maldoror01 a simple film about aging and love is pretentious, boring and unrelatable? Stick to your transformers 2
Christy gave it a 6 but she also predicted it to win the oscar.

are you kidding me with this? Amour's a FABULOUS movie!

Agreed. At least 2 of these reviewers were totally lazy and judging by the standards of what Hollywood does. Lame. :/
6? Worst critics ever.

You'r reffering to them french movie "the Intouchables"?

Already four mime lovers have shown up. 8-)

A 6 IS BEING GENEROUS TO AMOUR?!?!? I love you guys but CHRISTY WHAT THE FUCK THIS MOVIE IS INCREDIBLE
This is a harrowing but beautiful film. I hope that with this and Holy Motors whattheflick continue to review acclaimed foreign films.
Grandpa 007 would make $200 million dollars!
Such a good movie

Jonathan Kim does all the "serious" style reviews I think.
Pitch Perfect gets a 9 and this gets a 6. WTF has officially become a joke of a show. Back to Schmoes and Stuckmann I go
Amour is a well made movie, great acting, very artistic and oscar worthy. But, the major flaws in this movie is, boring. I mean extremely boring.
Ten minutes opening scene of Up is ten time better than this whole movie....
sorry.
No, that's actually wrong

Um.. no they don't. Want to see what real film criticism looks like on youtube? Check out /user/cinefiles.
Haha, is the irony lost on you?
Haw haw...I haven't heard term "bored shitless" in a while.
you know it irrelevant, right?
Alonso Duralde, brought to you by TYT's blue camera.
Yeah! super cereal people like you and moi. I only like movies if the right person tells me to. How dare they have opinions that differ from the norm, we should enforce conformity in are movie critics.
Nice, foreign movies.
Come at me bro
Whoever white-balanced (or lack thereof) this needs to be fired.
One of the greatest living filmmakers...? I guess our standards have lowered over time.

This isn't a great movie, if you havent gone through the film's situation
THIS MOVIE SUCKS!
Pretentious piece of shit... I'm glad I didn't waste my cash on this
