This film randomly popped into my head this evening and I had to come back to this review. Kermode is spot on. A very fine film!

Superb film. Its at least as good as anything that's come out of France, Germany or Scandanavia in recent years. And its such a wonderful advert for Thorns of Norwich (when I saw the film at Norwich's CinemaCity over the opening weekend the reference in the film had everyone cheering: I guess you'll have to be from Norfolk to appreciate this!).

Mark spoke longer on this film in ANOTHER film review video (can't remember.) Nice "european" film, they don't do em like this often enough these days. No fireworks, but not boring. Pairs well with "The Wife", which I sought out after Kermode as well.

I had been looking forward to this film for a few years after Mark's review. Although the performances are fantastic, especially Tom Courtney, I just can't get my head around the main plot point of the film. Of course the letter and the news within it would have an affect on her husband, but Rampling's character thinks it shouldn't - bit strange if you ask me. Not a plot spoiler, but I don't think Rampling can play the piano...

the point of the film was that their life together and their marriage was a lie and that every decision that was taken in this marriage was influenced by the only women that the guy really loved - his dead fiancee.

      **SPOILERS**
The entire unfolding of the story conveyed that the wife began to grasp the truth that she was a replacement love-- a pale one when compared to what her husband had with Katya. You know, Katya who he took endless pictures of (he showed no interest in taking pictures of his wife), who was pregnant when she died (he chose not to have children with his wife), who looked similar to his wife, who he would have married if she hadn't died (despite him playing it down to his wife that they'd just pretended to be married), etc.

Absolutely agree. It took me more than one viewing to notice some things, like how she told him so much of their marriage has been tainted by his obsession with Katia. He'd even spray Katia's perfume around the house, among other things. Notice when he was intimate with Kate, he closed his eyes. When Kate tells him to open his eyes, he suddenly loses the mood.
